Ole Timer

LAZ .... Great one ... keep em coming !

Hey guyz ... that new 80w lionel power supply with the looks to be 80w brick .... will my 180w powerhouse  plug into the controller instead or is the plug different ?

Ole Timer - By chance are talking about a BW80?  The BW80 came before the CW80 and was the controller and a brick.  Since manufacturers don't build things any beefier than necessary I'd be hesitant to use any brick other than the one that came with it.

Roger by golly you are probably right ... all I saw was a pic of the one for sale on ebay ... no description of model . Looked exactly like the CW80 ... but with a brick . Went to the web ... no such links for a BW80 ... is that the correct numbers ?

Dennis kudos on the boy and you violin lessons...

Well have some minor issues to iron out and we'll see what happens next

Rich,

I got your email today.  I am still waiting on the oval of Fastrack that I ordered to arrive before I make a decision.  I haven't had any experience with the stuff yet, and I want to play with it before I invest into a large quantity.

Brent,

Glad to hear that the compactor never entered the picture!  That could have been really bad.  I do have a big red piece of junk in the driveway that would have looked good in there though!Sign - Oops  I think fife was ready to send a search party out for you this weekend.Big Smile BTW, there is a drop dead gorgeous 97 Probe GT in Alpine Green in your area.  I saw it on a forum this weekend, and I am extremely jealous.  Makes mine look like I got it from a salvage yard.

Not much else to report today. I am trying to plan out my benchwork right now, and I am of making the layout 10x16 and 40" high.  It should be much easier to work with than the 12x16 and 13" high that it was previously.

Good Evening from Blueberryhill....

Today was a rainy day. Got colder. 39 degrees. Yesterday was 70 and beautiful. This is some crazy weather.

Busy today. Ran a lot of errands. Now relaxing. I had to stop and get the new plates for the car. Price has doubled in 2 years. Gas is stuck at $1.99 a gallon. Other than that...... Not much new here.

Dining car was here early for breakfast. Had the usual.

I hope y'all had a great day.

Well got my cheap ebay win in today as expected the engine is DCSad But still a decent looking engine for the money I dished out. even got a caboose top ( frame and wheels gone lol) figure I could either sell off parts from it ( end rails and smoke stack)  or make it into a repair building on the layout.

Well time to get a piece of carmel topped apple pie ( heated in microwave for 25 secs ) with fudge swirl icecream on topDinner

Cloudy and maybe 40.  We've got a new manager in the plant.  He is on temporary assignment here for 18 months or so from Japan.  He came into the office after lunch, and said, in an unbeliving kind of voice "its snowing!".  Had to chuckle over that one.  He will learn about Missouri weather during his stay here.  Then again, he's been in the corporate office in the Detroit area for at least a year, so he knows about Yankee weather.

Went to the doctor today for the 53,000 mile check up.  Came away with two more appointments - one to see the lower end plumbing specialist for an inspection with a fancy bore scope (oh boy), the other to have a questionable mole carved off of my arm.

Got home and found that my #17349 NYC milk car got here.  Opened it up and found out that it has never been run.  The couplers were still wrapped.  I'm going to slip it into the Empire State Express.  Pictures next Sunday.  If it does not look quite right, I guess I'll just have to get a NYC Hudson and some heavyweight Pullmans.

Banks - the mower is servicable.  I'm still going to play with it some more this weekend.

The tape is running for Dancing with the Stars for my wife while she is out, and I see it is time to find the MSU/NC game.

Later all.

Howdy folks - snowed all day and roads are clear, no snow on the grass, just wet.  That's the kind of snow I don't mind too much, lol!

Went to a recorder concert tonight and tomorrow night we have another concert (band).  Only work 3 days this week too, Laz!

Too funny about that Japanese boss!  Welcome to MO!

Rich - that sucks on the ignition, at least it will be fixed.  Still gonna trade it in?

Just home from another judging gig, my ears hurt (not really), heard some wonderful kids and then others who should consider chorus or football.

Kurt--here's what I do with ribs, very similar to what the the pro's do in KC.  Dry rub overnight in fridge wrapped tightly.  Bring out ribs one hour before smoking to come up to room temperature.  Light smoker  and get it up to 195-200, bring out the ribs and put them on at the other end of the smoker with a piece of steel covering the charcoal wood, also at that time I add two chunks of wood--apple & pecan.  I do that again in 90 minutes, I might add a small piece of hickory.  Hickory can be a bitter/strong smoke.  At about 3 hours I will add more charcoal wood, no more wood chunks.  At the 4 hour mark I will spray the ribs with a secret ingredient (shhhhh, don't tell anyone) Dr. Pepper or Cheery Coke, keeps the ribs from getting to much of a crust, do it again in 30 minutes.  At the 5 hour mark I paint them with KC Masterpiece for 30 minutes.  Bring 'em in at about that point, let 'em rest and cut 'em with an electric knife and serve.

The keys:  St. Louis style cut ribs, fresh dry rub--I will go through my spices this week and throw them all away, NO OLD SPICES, temp on the smoker should never go over 200 (that's easier said than done) wind is our enemy, ambient outdoor temps make no difference, LOW & SLOW, apple & pecan wood are your best bets, very small amount of hickory.  Many competition pit masters will not use hickory but I do, one chunk.  I do have the recipe for the best baked beans in the world, first place in KC and it's not published anywhere, if you want it I will email it to you.  No one comes close.

If you want to buy a great family smoker google Hasty Bake, mine is now 12 years old and works like a  champ.  I am going to buy a bigger smoker soon but probably won't use it a lot unless we have big numbers for dinner, I just want one and I deserve it :)  I am very proud to say that my family raves about my smoked pork dinners, even my brother in law who has gourmet tastes.  When our friends visit from Alexandria, VA and Florida, they never want to go out to eat and I must admit, I really enjoy cooking--it took me 10 years to be happy with my ribs.  Dry rub is one of the real keys AND LOW & SLOW.  Last summer I made a huge crowd happy with pork shoulder, I'm getting hungry :)

Chief, got another idea for that former date of Doug's daughter.  Give him a little Southern Justice....take him out to the swamps down here and chain him to a cypress stump with a little molasses poured over his head.  Bugs and gators will take care of thingsWink

Good morning.  Hope to have an early day of it as we only have one scheduled case.  Wife is waiting for the baby sitter to show up....she's late.  This is spring break for the kids and would be a good time for bride to get in her two days for the month.  Now she is a bit angry.  Glad I'm not the baby sitter, I wouldn't want my bride mad at me like this.

Well, got patient, hope Y'all have a great day.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 30s, but no SNOW!  Played a little soccer with the Brazilian last night.  I usually try to keep it close so she does not get discouraged, but after she tied it up once, she said she had to leave.  Hmmmm....maybe it is time I take my game up another notch.  Still it is fun scrimmaging and it beats the thunder out of jogging around a track.  Must have done my taxes ok as we got our refund.  Will use that to pay for the tranny work we had done.  Did some Second Life and watched some "Dancing with the Stars".  Thumb still hurts.  Work is busy.  I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast.  Beacon will be lit, and I can try the new one hand controller tonight.  Doug M, I am glad to hear your daughter has a date now.  Dennis, I like your approach to "justice".  Fife, nice of you to suggest your son as well.  Sounds like a decent fellow.  Buckeye, nice commentary on the cemetery.  Trace Adkins did a good song called "Arlington" on that same theme.  I hope everyone has a good day.  Almost forgot to mention about Lucas.  He gave a speech at IU during the cancer fundraiser last weekend.  He said there were about 3,000 there.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Jon, your post on smoked ribs has my stomach growling. I need to go out and grill something for breakfast!Dinner

KC spices and rubs are my favorites, and I have tried many. I have used a propane grill and a regular charcoal grill for years. I use wood in both, and smoke in the propane grill. Really not happy with the smoking results, low amount of smoke and to fast cooking.

This is the year I get a real smoker. How do you use the piece of steel charcoal cover? Did it come with your Hasty Bake?

Do you know anything about the pellet smokers, the ones that automatically feed pellets to the fire?

Sorry about all the questions, but you have really peaked my interest in smokers.

I to would love to have your baked bean recipe!Big Smile

Mornin' Fellas.

I just read about bar-b-que at breakfast time and now I'm starving for bar-b-que! I too could go for that baked beans recipe. I'm planning a crab bake/bar-b-que this summer and am now intrigued by this smoker bit... hmmm...

Not much going on today. Got home last night and fell asleep watching the end of the O's/Yanks... then SusieQ wakes me up at 8:15... was up till 11:45... Banged Head 'Why are you up here sleeping? You never go to bed that early.' 'Ummm... I was tired and not feeling well.' Sad

I get 2 hours of rest and I'm up for 3.5 hours and not tired... drives me nuts... oh well.

Morning all. Cold and clear today - wore too light a coat. First night of class too. Boy, it's never too early for BBQ. Not sure where I can find some immediately, but that's a target for lunch. Sox should get started a bit later. Wow, is this ridiculous weather to play baseball. Appreciate all the fine suggestions for the princesses' ex-date.  Stopped off at a bully's house on the way home from work yesterday to have a heart-to-heart with the parents - always fun. These things seem to come in waves. Hopefully receding soon. I have to make a minimum for the bride's surprise party so will start calling the non-rsvpers tomorrow.  I don't know how to put her off anymore - "what are we doing for my birthday?" - maybe misdirection?

Had a shocker last night ... all my detailing chalks/powders were missing . Here's the shocker ... wife thinks maybe grand  daughters thought they were some of her blushes or whatever those things are she got for xmas and never used and told them they could have them . They were both in a plastic box/tray like sets .... multiple colors . They're very young and paint themselves like clowns ... thinking they are models ... they think they look good and I tell them they do too ... trying not to laugh hard in front of them ... then bath them . Well needless to say ... one did take them after 7 phone calls of hectic questions I found out . The detailing chalks were the ones the more ya rub ... the harder they stick ! She used them on her doll babies and not herself ... thank the Lord  ... Laugh . I told her mom to throw them away and I'd buy more . Hope I won't have to buy dolls to replace them ... that stuff when rubbed in real good ... does'nt come off .

Gentlemen and you to Chief--

I'll get that bean recipe typed up and sent later today, not a problem.  I need to get my trailer moved this morning while the ground is still firm from last night's chilly weather as I'm having the wheels repacked and new seals tomorrow.  I did about 5000 miles with it last year with both bikes on it and next week I'm headed to St. Paul with son's bike (which I store here all winter) and mine so we can do the Flood Run, it's a fantastically beautiful ride and all proceeds go to the Gillete Childrens Hospital , thousands of  bikes will be there and if you can stay ahead of the crazies it's a fun ride  http://www.floodrun.org/

Side note:  Rich, can't you get someone to steal your HD?  Your tolerance level is MUCH higher than mine.  Go park it in a seedy neighborhood for a day or two, problem solved Whistling

Patrick--if you are thinking about getting into smoked meats, take a hard look at the Hasty Bake.  The piece of steel I was talking about is included with the oven, it fits over the coals rack and basically deflects the heat so it becomes indirect cooking which is what you want.  I use lump wood coal which you can find just about anywhere, if I'm desperate I will use briquettes  (Kingsfords).  I never use starting fluid as it will flavor the coals, use fire starting sticks--you can find those at a smoke shop.  I would be cautious about using corn pellets for cooking as I sense they might burn hot, LOW & SLOW is a major key when smoking meats.  Cold beer is another important factor that I failed to mention last night Thumbs Up

Good Morning

Congrats to NC and MSU as well, they got farther than anyone here expected. Hoped yes, but not expected.

Wow it's a cold 32 and overcast, still some snow here and there but tomorrows 50s will take care of that.

Back from Echograms, all is well and a presc. for whatever is "bugging" me and won't go away. The rest  of today I will stay in from the wind and cold.  Maybe some trains later...S.J.

All this talk about Bar-B-Que things is making me hungry again.  What I'm looking for is a plain old hibatchi for cooking steaks on without building a bonfire.  Seems I remember them being the perfect size for cooking one or two steaks without too much charcoal.  They were made of cast iron and had vents to regualate draft etc.  You don't see them in the stores anymore.  My gas grill has just about had it.  I replaced the burner in it but it burns with too much orange flame.  I'm told that that is caused by too much fuel and not enough air.  The flexible metal hoses from the burner have a little opening near the ends that fit over the regulator outlets.  They clip on with some metal clips.  I don't see any way to vary the amount of air with this thing.  I've tried smoking meat a little on the gas grill in the past but the wood chips burn up fast if you don't soak them enough.  Outdoor cooking is something I need to learn more about.  We just do country style pork ribs in the oven which come out pretty good if you don't over cook.  Sometimes, I shred the meat up into stringy pieces and season, or try too, like Eastern Carolina Bar-B-Que with vinegar and red pepper sauce.  With a little cole slaw on a bun, it taste pretty good with more hot sauce added if desired.  Unfortunately, my body plumbing can't tolerate hot stuff too much anymore  Sad  dang it.  Getting older is not for sisies.  Have a good day y'all.

UGH...

So I've been thinking of revamping the layout on one corner... The lower level is about 80% under mountains so you don't get to see those trains for long. I am thinking of redoing one corner so you will get to see the trains longer, problem is this is the corner where the town is and doing so will reduce the walkway to just about 1 foot in depth. I can get 15" if I only extend the upper track 3 inches, or 18" if I don't extend the upper track at all.

The reason I want to extend the upper track is so I can get more room for the town. Here is my town mockup on the dinning room table:

If I go with 3" extension I can have two lane traffic on both streets. If I go with 6" I can get some space between the back of the upper town level and the siding for the Domino Sugar plant. If I don't do either then I get no space between the siding and town and I only have one way traffic on the upper street.

Thoughts?

Ole Timer - thanks! I'm actually looking for advice though - should I extend the upper level 0", 3", or 6"?  Is the lack of depth going to be an issue with people viewing the town?
