Hey Paul, WelcomeSign - Welcome

I have a small bedroom with an "L" shaped layout that has 2 main lines - 4X8 and 2X4.  It's modest, but fun.  I'm planning on a bigger layout, once the living situation have been solidified.

Jim Phish - nice one on the Tolerance!!Bow

Ol' Timer - argument over, your opinion and mine - agree to disagree. Smile,Wink, & Grin I didn't want that bleeding over here, Sorry that I even brought it up.Sigh

Really busy, was supposed to be in a meeting with food, passed on that, had a respite and checked it real quick - busy day here at the auto-world.

Hello Brent,

Thanks for the reply. In the next few months a bedroom will open up as my last nester is moving to his own home.  It isn't big but I could fit a 9x10 layout in it. Right now it is in the basement with an open staircase and it competes in noise level with the "boob tube". It will be moving. As to what form I am still not sure.

Take care

Paul

As Brent said there is the full spectrum here.  Some have layouts some do not. Some are collectors and some are operators and other collector operators.  There is also a mix of pre-war post war, modern, and every manufacture you could imagine.  Diversity is here, and tolerance. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Wizzer - Sign - Welcome To the Pot!

Some of us have 'permanent' layouts, some are carpet central runners, some are outdoorsy types, and some are like you where we have semi-permanent layouts.

Personnally I have a 'permanent' layout, but I could disassemble it and move parts or all of it if need be. It isn't 'modular' as I had originally intended, but I can separate it into manageable sections for moving (would require 2 - 4 people to move each section).

Hello Guys,

Now that I am retired I guess I can report from western NY - Mid 60's and rain sometime today. Just finished off the coffee and the grandson is sleeping so I can get in a few words and questions.

Since getting back into trains I have yet to put up a real "layout". I have fastrack on top of 3/4 plywood, sawhorses and an area about 6x12. Do most people have set layouts? I am thinking of making one but I don't know if I want the permanent feel of an actual layout.

Your thoughts gentlemen would be appreciated.

What's up with the thread about multiple command systems? Seems every post must be 'monitored by an administrator'.... what's up with that?

 Brent,

I am NOT an "administrator",  what I was trying to find out is the following;

How many guys are using command control as opposed to conventional.  Then of those using command, how many have multiple systems.  And finally, how many have all three.  SIMPLE AS THAT !

Now, I have been wondering about that for awhile, and became more and more curious.  So wanted to ask the question without creating a discussion regarding one system versus another.  Because, I knew that if was to ask how many have Legacy or how many have DCS or how many have TMCC, would certainly create a lot of concern.

Now, I will share other thoughts I've had;

Recently,  I have seen a lot of threads about how prejudice the other forum is towards MTH, and how bias York appeared to many based upon the product availability and displays.

So, where is the bias??  Does one forum have more command control system than another?  What are the relative demographics of train users on the forums, regarding the trains they run, or how they use them?

Personally, I enjoy TMCC, Legacy and DCS, I can argue favorably for any one of them.  And, then go and run some older conventional I have with equal enjoyment.  I get most frustrated when people start making statements about one of the systems that is inaccurate, or biased.

Also, I enjoy BOTH forums, I don't find it necessary to degrade either one of them.  (I posted the same thread on both, they havn't seen the need to post a bunch of rhetoric about why their system was better than someone else's.)

Bottom line -  Was trying to get some imperical data as close as possible as given the means available.

Regardless of how much bias there may or maynot be at either forum, the train enthusiasts that frequent the forums are probably more technically oriented, or are interested in high tech stuff than those that don't.  I would expect that the conventional operators will relatively low in number by comparison.  But, outside the forum may well be the majority.  Don't Know.

I have probably elaborated too much with THIS POST as well,  AND I AM NOT THE MODERATOR HERE EITHER !!

Good Morning

Going to 69 with rain expected.

As for that other place, trash threads are an everyday event there. Even people who will never own the product will jump in. But each of us has the right to see what we want to see. I have learned that two people cannot agree on what color is really red or blue or anything else.

I just had an egg sandwich for breakfast so I guess lunch is likely today. Charlie is coming by tonite so I need to setup something that smokes good as we  are going to try the new oderless Mega-steam. Have a good day, enjoy the sun if you have it....S.J.

Good morning all,

It is another rainy day in Indiana.  Played some good soccer last night and did weights at the YMCA.  Watched the last part of "Lost".  Very good day at work yesterday as I solved some long standing programming issues I have been dealing with.  Beacon is lit.  I had the regular fare on the dining car.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good Morning...Smile,Wink, & GrinZzz

Don: Didn’t mean to hi-jack your query, I just tried to dispel a myth, as it were.  I’ll refrain from answering or addressing any comments in that forum.

Right now it’s damp and 65 and then up to 80 or so later.

Gearing up for the “BIG” car sale on the 16th & 17th, so I have to work another weekend.  Then the weekends will be mine for a while.  I’m planning on going to the HOG meeting on the 9th, first one since December.  I’ll probably pick up the bike today or tomorrow so I’ll have it for Sunday.

No trains last night, came home fell asleep on the couch after work; everybody came home about 8:30, made tacos and chicken fajitas for dinner with white rice.  In bed by 11:00.  Need to get the garage organized for the bikes homecoming, I guess.

Be back later!

Good Morning from wet Southern Ohio

All is quiet here.  The grandkids are staying over at the other grandparents for a couple days.

Old timer – I’ve tried the “it’s a man thing” answer also, like when I hear another black engine?

Wes – Good luck with moving day.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate for you.

DougDG – Sounds like you got someone on a bad day maybe?

Well, time to go to work

May God bless

Jim

Evening All,

Kinda got P.O.'d at Lionel customer service today. After many years of being consistently helpful with info and/or parts orders this morning was entirely pure bs. In preparation for making up some military cars with loads I e-mailed asking what the deck width would be on the 40' flats, 6-27513/4/5/6, since this info is not provided in the catalogs although the length is specified.

Their response was "They are the width of the average scale freight car. Thank you, Lionel"

Very informative response, Thumbs Down  Sad  Tongue .

Shopping done and a fresh supply of banilla on hand. I did forget to mention we rode home with Doug last nite on the chat line. A nice long train ride, Doug called the stops. I will wait for  Brutus and the Tardis..S.J.

Good Afternoon Y'all!  What a day.  Have 12 patients and too much to do.  Will be some time before I head home.  One of the guys is going to be away till next week, so I'll have a busy one for the next few days.  Have a rare case in the morning that I'll have to come in for, even though the new guy is in early.  It will give me a chance to show him how it is done.  Still, it makes for a long day.

Seems we did miss some great stuff at the Legacy meeting Chief.  Glad Marty posted the information.  I wonder if one of the after market companies will be able to come up with a Legacy Upgrade since Lionel doesn't seem interested at this time.  Would be nice.

Well, just got a call to take care of another case.  Will check back later this week,

God Bless,

Dennis

Just returned from a big convention in Minneapolis.  Over 5000 in attendance.  Rode the light rail.  Discussed with the locals how we could take some Minnesota cold and ship it to Roseyville this next winter.  Laugh Mix in some Ohio snow with Minnesota cold and the Mayor of Roseyville will be impeached  run out on a rail.

I take it everyone had a great time at York.

  WhistlingHow about on Fastrack...???

Rich, depending on weather or not the barrel car shoes will reach the Fastrack operating track section, you may need (2) Fastrack to Tubular adapter track pieces, and a Tubular UCS.  I had this problem with my Dump Cars.  The Fastrack operating track sections were designed too low.  Funny they still sell these with a defective design.

Took the Girls on a school field trip to the Leslie Science Center.  Hiked in the woods, and looked at animals.  Good spot for the kiddies!

Howdy from the GREAT SOUTH.  Wireless at the local store.   I see nothing has changed,  Yankees fussing about all the free gifts I give them.  Like GRITS and lovely Southern weather.  Got a lot of my projects done.  Fished late yesterday but my GPS voltage alarm started.  Checked and cranking battery was down. Shock  Came back in OK.  Checked the voltages as the Pro Mariner charger did its thing.  Was right on.  Checked the receipt of the purchase of the battery.  6 years old.  Time to replace.  Delivered new frig this AM.  Old one did not have ice maker.  Going back to house and install line.  Suppose to rain this PM.  Chat later.

Rich,

The vibrotor in the barrel car has one side of the coil grounded to the frame, and the other side is connected to both shoes.  The car can be operated by placing one of the trucks (not both at the same time) on the right hand side of a UCS section and pressing the unload button.

Good Afternoon!!

Up to 90 here as well.  A little breezy and partly cloudy.

You’ll have to excuse me, after such a crushing defeat last night, I’m laying low on the hockey...I’m in mourning....Banged HeadBanged HeadBanged Head

Cleaned up the layout a bit, threw the lights on for a while and ran my MTH Wanderer for a bit.  Nice engine, very temperamental, though..Banged Head

Bought a box of post war rolling stock, going through it piece by piece and cleaning it up.  After a little work, should look really nice.  Just need to figure out how to operate the barrel car I got with this bunch.

Still looking at houses, what a pain.  Then have to figure out how to stuff 3000 sq ft. of house into something about half that size...yikes!!  Can you say YARD SALE??Whistling

See ya later!

Wow, it's barely 50 here - and 90s on both coasts.  Don, the Western Hobbycraft Johnstown trolley has nice station announcements and background noises but is purely conventional. Did you see the Peter Witt cars in the new Williams catalog?

Afternoon fellas,

Saturday is moving time for me and the family...  I have been working on rehab projects on a new house for over a month now.  It's finally move in ready.  We are in the process of packing up the old house.  We have lived here for 9 years, and puchased a lot of stuff during that time.  I'm finding stuff I didn't know I had.  I packed up and moved most of the trains last night, just so they do not get damaged.  I'm going to try to bring over the old layout and incorporate that into the new train area.  We have a pretty decent sized basement, and a dedicated 12x15 train room. I should be able to get something going in that.  When the timen comes, I'll take all the help I can get.

Have a nice day!

My guy at the Train Depot in Manassas says, and I agree, if you are controlling MTH trains with DCS you need Proto-2. To run Proto-1 with DCS you need an expensive conversion, several hundred Dollors.

Patrick

PS1 engines are conventional in nature... meaning you control them via DCS in conventional mode, not command mode. If you want to control ANY conventional engine in command mode (be it DCS or TMCC) you need a conversion and yes they can be expensive.

You are right. I didn't make myself clear. I was thinking command mode. I prefer to run everything I can in command mode.

A Late Good Morning

I did some shopping this morning, hopfully done for a little while.

55 and sun right now, rain Again tomorrow. yawn.

PS1 you can have them all but if I had one it would have a BCR. The newer 3 volt system seems ok but I quit till the must have battery is gone for good. As for the tires you might be able to slip one on if you have patients and a steady hand. On steamers I  find it is much easier to remove the body then you have  more room to work. Have a great day...S.J.

Good Morning,

Ole Timer, you might be right about having a water leak, will see when my next water bill comes. Any way the grass by my septic tank is extremely green and long, also looking at water leak possibilty really strong!  Then again maybe my RV sent a lot of water straight to the septic tank as well, took RV off of city water line after three weeks and put it back on the holding tank. Don't use much water on the holding tank, so maybe that was my water bandit.

Had a light rain last night, more like a mist than a real shower. Currently we are in a drought, not much rain since December!

Was running my MTH SD-45 and noticed that one of the traction tires came off a couple days ago. Do I have to take the whole thing apart just to replace a tire?
