Hello Everyone! There used to be a Dog n Suds Root Beer Stand in Kirtland, Ohio on Rte 306. It is long gone now,Went out of business about 15 years ago. In Spite of it's name they did not have Peanut Butter For beagles or a dog wash either![:)][;)] There is a A&W out in Orwell,Ohio on Rte 322 which is about 30 Mi s.e. of Willoughby.It is in a modern building along with a Subway sub shop and does not have any carhops. The local Gas station here in Willoughby was a madhouse this morning.WMMS one of the Cleveland Radio stations was selling gas there for $ 1.07 per gallon.Haven't seen gas this cheap in about 5 years. Did not stop for any as the wait would have been too long.Too bad they can't keep it at this price for at least another 10 years. Oh Wellllll. Take care everyone...........................Keith

Morning all. While we are in an exurb of Chicago that is very rapidly suburbanizing - it still has some remnants of the small towns that used to make it up - there's a drive in dog-n-suds on Rt. 31 in Richmond. Here in Crystal Lake, there's 'The Freeze' - complete with big light-up ice cream cone on the roof - tons of homemade ice cream in all sorts of flavors since 1948. Hate to tell you there's an A&W Root beer stand inside of Woodfield Mall here too - sounds like sacriledge... cheapest gas is $2.16 here. It's fun to reminisce and I'm not even that old. Have a great day - and safe flight, Chief.

Morning all!

Running late this AM - I've got a radiator leak in "Big Blue" (my 1990 Cadillac DeVille) that I had to see about. As the saying goes, "the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get!"

Y'all have mentioned some great brands of root beer (sometimes known as "stump juice" in these parts). I guess my favorites (in approximate order) would be: A&W, Hires and Barq's. About the only brand that I DON"T care for is Fanta (produced by Coca Cola).

Good day to you all!

Roger, At my Grandfather's house, where we lived, we had a room in the basement for the well pump. Since it stayed at a constant temp it was kinda like our root cellar, we stored all of the past summer's canned veggies as well as our fresh stuff. But the worst part was when we made sauerkraut that was where we put the crocks. P.U. !!!!! Do believe that is why I can't stomach *** to this day, stinky stuff. [xx(]
It is a nasty day here so far, raining like [censored] with flood warnings til noon and possible t'storms.

UM SPAM,
During hurricane Agnes in '72 ate spam sandwiches every day working for the government cleaning out flooded basements in Wilkes Barre, Pa. Great summer job $2.75 an hour (was a crew chief, not CHIEF EAGLES) and all you could eat.

Laz,

GOOD memories! My grandparents would always have Spam on Sunday nights and it's probably been at least 40 years since I've last eaten it. In the summer of 1967 I worked at a warehouse in Des Moines and was making $3.18 an hour plus at least 10 hours of overtime, HUGE money. I nearly didn't go back for my senior year of college because of that, but then the TET offensive helped shape may decision.

$3.18 an hour, who would've thunk that was big money.

Spam, yum. I lived on the stuff after college - some of the only stuff I could afford to eat. Haven't had it for 20 years though... In going around Chicago, I like to notice the signs for defunct beer brands around the neighborhood bars.

Grilled spam over the campfire...now that is living, when you are 11 years old.

When I was a kid we did something called dam sliding. We would slide down the face of small dams covered with moss in our cut off blue jeans and by the end of the day , holes had been worn through the denium.

Dams, spams, root beer, RC cola, moon pies. Man oh man the things I miss in a couple days. I will have to bid on the pigseyes car, just for fun. Got my Williams Berkshire today, what a beauty. Cant find a switch to turn the smoke off and on.It's a sleuth unit and I don't think it's good to run with it on all the time without smoke fluid in it ? Am I correct???? Some of you smokers help me out here.
Beautiful today and 58 degrees. 28 tonight so I have built a fire.
Gas is 2.42 gallon, but its always high here. Nearly finished with cop shop, thank goodness. After that off to several other jobs that have been waiting........PE Tim

Here's the results of my attempt to relabel a tanker using graphics printed on a mailing label and placed over the existing graphics.

Due to the size of the graphics being covered the new overlays seem a bit disproportionate but they sufice since the original RR didn't exist in the time frame I'm in.

I hate annual reviews. Colonectomies are the same thing as a review in my book and I don't like being the doctor or the patient.

Doug, just tell your boss that the Chief is one of your close friends and Jimmy in Texas is your uncle. (We have recently found that Jimmy has sired several smart children.) No doubt with this information you will get an outstanding review.

If this doesn't work, tell him you know me as a last resort. Then tell him to read the biography of Al Capone and if he is smart he should put two and two together. (If you find out who Al Capone's lawyer was, this makes sense.)

Good afternoon, everyone!

Due to teacher inservices, there's no school Thursday or today. The weather's been nice, but yesterday we got a liberal helping of snow. Yes, snow! In the morning it was coming down heavily and blowing a whole lot. It was very light, fluffy stuff and was gone by the end of the day. It's starting to come down again now.

Right now in Canada, we're poised to be having a federal election, soon. The Gomery inquiry into the Liberal Party sponsorship scandal is currently taking place. There's all sorts of aligations and testimonies about secret plans and meetings, big (in the millions) under-the-table cash handouts, huge payments for little or no work done, various people being given preferential treatment and all sorts of other juicy stuff. Our previous prime minister Jean Chretien and our current prime minister Paul Martin (who was the finance minister while all this was going on) are being accused of many things. Via Rail has even gotten mixed up in this. Anyway, recent testimony has really put the Liberals into more hot water than they were before and since they have a miniority government, Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper is going to call a non-confidence vote that will force them out of power and have an election. What's exciting for me is that this will be the first election that I will be able to vote in.

Live from Roger's Corners Ohio, It’s Saturday Morning!!!

Today is National Advice Day. And here is your advice today.

BEER WISDOM

"Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I
look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all
of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be
out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better
to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and
worry about my liver."
-- Babe Ruth

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the
morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."
-- Lyndon B. Johnson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with
his fools."
-- Ernest Hemingway

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading."
-- Paul Hornung
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not."
-- H. L. Mencken

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we
fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!"
-- George Bernard Shaw
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
-- Benjamin Franklin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is
beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the
wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."
-- Dave Barry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"BEER: HELPING UGLY PEOPLE HAVE SEX SINCE 3000 B.C."
-- W. C. Fields

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Remember "I" before "E", except in Budweiser."
-- Professor Irwin Corey
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a "support group." Salvation in a
can!"
-- Leo Durocher

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to his
buddy Norm:
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as
fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the
slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first.
This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the
general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the
regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the
slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills
brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain
cells first.
In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain
cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why
you always feel smarter after a few beers."
Roger,
That's a good job and a good idea with the tank car. Your scenery is pretty spectacular too.
Roger & Buckeye,
A job as editor at MR or any other train-related magazine for that matter would indeed be a dream job. About the only better job I could think of would be a fortune cookie editor.
However, my knowledge of trains and toy trains is rather limited compared to a lot of brainiacs out there (have you noticed I ask a lot of questions on the forum and continually need all of your advise) and I'm happy writing, editing and posting the photos daily (except weekends) on www.army.mil, the 3rd most viewed government site after the IRS and NASA.
However, the location of the magazine, there in Wisconsin, I think, is a bit tempting because nearby are miles of forests where BB the beagle could do some serious rabbit hunting and eat Wisconsin cheese snacks.
Reg. Spam, the Japanese are Spam addicts. They purchase it in very large quantities and even gift wrap it for special occasions. Spam sushi is a delicacy there as well.
Interesting that our GIs in WWII ate it while fighting and now the former enemy (and good friends) have adopted our couisin. Of course sushi places are over here too now as well.
Well, my review was 'postponed' til next week so I'm taking Dr. John's counsel and not worrying about it. Just to share how screwy this can be, they had to approve our raises (if any - for the next fiscal year) before the review - and I heard I'm actually getting one so that's good news. A beautiful spring day here - warm, sunny - a great day for Little League baseball - I get to work as a parent volunteer in their snack bar today...will look for moon pies, and spam.
