Jim,

Other delicacies for both man and beast:

Eye candy. A good set of legs is one of the essential elements

Or, how about a Back lick?

Or best of all, Moon Pies.

When you're down south, the ONLY way to eat a Moon Pie is with an RC Cola!

That's nearly as good as adding a sleeve of Planters peanuts to a bottle of Coca Cola!

Hey - did you southern boys have A&W root beer stands? They served draft root beer in mugs that weighed 50 lbs. (to a young boy)! Moon pies tasted pretty yummy with a frosty mug o' root beer...!

Jim, We're probably showing our age but do you remember the A&W stands that were built to resemble root beer barrels. [^]

Life for this Loose Goose the Caboose is real crummy

Hi, my name is Loose Goose the Caboose and life is sure crummy. Nearly all of my friends have been torched or displayed on village sidings like mounted trophy animals. Hoodlums spray-painted me with graffiti too.

My windows and doors were boarded up so no one can come inside and play with me. The brakeman always used to have a box of Moon Pies he would eat, while sipping RC Cola or Root Beer from the barrel. My oh my, those were the days!

I really miss the good old days of The Southern Railway when I could take long cross-country trips down to Georgia and Tennessee and North Carolina and visit my relatives and wife, who is also my first cousin.

Today I work for the Norfolk Southern in Alexandria, Virginia, riding on coal trains backing in to the coal plant here, and they don't have much nostalgia. They don't even have much time for steam excursions anymore.

If you really love me, then please write to your congressman or congressladies and get me on the endangered species list. Say you want to preserve the Loose Goose Caboose and all of his kin and kindred kind.

-------------------------

My brakeman's favorite snacks were Moon Pies

No...there weren't any in Davenport, Iowa in the 1945 - 1950 time frame. Maybe in the larger cities? I don't think there are any A&W stands in Austin now...perhaps there are some left in other parts of the country...???

Have any of you heard of Richardsons Root Beer stands? We had A & W Root Beer and then there was Dog & Suds Root Beer stands. The Richardsons is still in business here in Conneaut Oh. & using the same wooden barrels to mix it in. It opens up in another week. The Cruiser cars go there a lot & they still have the old counter top Juke boxes, & great hamburgers & all. I'll have to get a picture of it. Would make a great scratch building project for our layouts!! Thanks, John

I met one of my ex-wives (from Miyako Island) at an A&W Root Beer Stand in the South. The South Pacific, that is. They had mighty fine root beer with a lot of froth and foam

I remember A&W's as being orange colored stands. Don't remember barrel shapes where I grew up in NJ.

The last "authentic" A&W stand I saw was back in 1984. My wife and I were vacationing in the mountains of Tennessee. Found an A&W in the middle of nowhere on some country backroad.

There is an A&W here in Prattville (in the same building as a KFC). They have the root beer, but it's just not the same.

Some of you from the DEEP south may remember Frost Top drive-ins. They served root beer in frosted mugs (almost as good as A&W). They had a large mug on the roof of their drive-ins.

A&W was good, better than what they make now, but my favorite was Hire's. It made made the best root beer floats. [tup] [yeah]

Root beer???? Southerners make moon shine. [;)] Visited the tracks in Raleigh today around 1 PM. No traffic. I think they were still blocked up from the derailment near Spencer. Take a big crane to put 6 engines back on the track.

HA! As long as we have this "Memory Lane" thing goin', was Iowa the only place where you ordered a "black cow" when you wanted a root beer float? Still one of my favorites, regardless of the brand of ice cream or root beer used...

Now that y'all have the memories started it called to mind having to dig out sassafrass (sp?) root at my Uncle's at the Jersey shore so that my grandfather could make root beer. One of his aging places was the cellar in our house, in addition to his own, and occasionally a bottle would explode. There were also times a bottle would "disappear", I still wonder where they went. Here ya go, Doug! I can honestly say I have NEVER seen one of these in my 62 years. One of these would sure go great with one of Tom's classic car scenes, wouldn't it?

JimBo, if I could find one, it would be there.

A few years ago, (maybe 8) there was still an A & W Rootbeer Stand in Warren, Ohio. (right on US Rt. 422 and Rt 45. I haven't been down there in some time, don't know if its still there.

Well guys, I start the trip to York tomorrow. Gonna drop off the wife and kid at her Grandmothers in Franklin, PA, then stop at my Dad's house and pick up the digital camera. After York, we will go to Strasburg and visit the Choo Choo Barn, TCA Museum, and the railroad museum. Last October we went to Altoona and saw the Horseshoe Curve and actually found the house my Dad lived in right in Juniata.

Good hunting to anyone else headed to York!!!

Found a quote on roadfood.com forum (yep, there's even a website for that) about Frost Top:

"Memphis TN had a chain called Frost Top Root Beer. Their
signature sandwich was the Lot-o-burger. The Lot-o-burger
was a giant of a sandwich. One could not miss the restautant,
because there was a giant root beer mug on the roof."

Unfortunately, I could not come up with a picture. The last one I ever saw was in Mobile, AL back in the late 70s and it had been turned into a fruit and vegetable stand, the giant mug painted over in flat white paint.

Tom, Would you believe that the city of Kent has not one but two A&W drive in's. I haven't seen them but I work with a couple of guys that live in Cuyhoga Falls and they always go there for chilli dogs.

I used to live with a Mennonite family near Harrisburg Pa., and they made their own sasafras soda, ice cream and since they lived on a farm they had meat year round from their steers and chickens and vegetables all summer and canned veggies in the winter.

There wasn't too much they needed to buy. And the food they made was the best I've ever eaten.

Morning gang. Dave, I grew up on a farm. We had pork, chicken and beef. Mainly beef as we had two big freezers. I use to eat fried cubed steak for breakfast. I ate so much beef you would have thought I was a Texan [thank goodness I'm not]. [;)] Getting ready to catch a plane to St. Louis BPS. Back on Sunday night [late]. Dr. John, keep those Yankees in line while I'm gone. [:D][}:)] Roger, "cover his back." Getting worried about SkyRay. Did he tell us he was on vacation with grandchildren???? He has been a faithful poster. TTim has too but I do think he said something about being gone. Miss them both. I know PETim is working and will drop in when he can. Those Yankees never fail to post. [:(] [;)] Got to go. God bless all.
