Good Morning

wow  lots to read since last nite, good for the Pot to be active. Wes, looks like a great house and a real nice basement. Partly cloudy and 20s today but I am marking the days off the calander. I know that means one less day for all of us but winter doesn't count. Got some train things to do and a mag. to finish so have a great day..S.J.

 Good Morning All:

Chief - Thanks for the heads up on the NASCAR items on choochooauctions.com. Will have to bid on some of them after I finish this post. And you are right about having cattle and not going hungry. We feed out 2 steers each year for freezer meat for us and our three kids that live here in Culpeper. Feeding out means lots of corn (no molassas though).

RT - Thank you for "the rest of the story". By the way, I to was wandering about fife.

Jack - One shot of my special lightening and the cows immediately  stop coughing. One side effect - they can't MOO for about a week, and they run off about 50 pounds. My special lightening IS good. How good is it? It is so good that the infernal revenewers would rather get a Gal. jug a month as a bribe than close me down.

Wes - Great looking house! Open, lots of windows. My kind of house. It is nice to see someone is benefiting from this messed up economy.

I continue to be fascinated by the statistics of this thread. 49 pages, 732 replies, 9910 views in just 19 days!

Good Mornin, Ya'll, From Rainy Taxachusetts,

After reading the posts from the CA boys, Taxachusetts' pols taking seriously this threat to our "tax anything live or inert" reputation and may be getting some creative CA ideas to close our gargantuan state budget defecit.  Lottery sales down, unlike what happened in previous economic downturns.  Boston school system is still considering cutting 400 teacher positions.

Watched a Fox offshoot channel last night, "Train Wrecks."  Lots of live footage, especially of drivers rolling the dice, ignoring signals and gates, and losing. One observer discussed the weight and mass of a train and compared the impact to a car driving over a beer can.  Remind me to never live at the foot of the California/LA basin where the 70 car loaded freights come down from the hills, experience brake failure, derail at 105mph, and wipe out entire communities.  Too common of an occurence there too.  Death and destruction, bad.  DougM....they showed a clip of the Downers Grove commuter rail fatality where commuters ignored the signals, sightline was screened of the second track by a passenger train stopped for pickup, and one commuter got splattered.  Gruesome.

JimSP....prayers continue for your daughters.  I read Buckeye's story and it brought back a bad memory for me.  A guy took a 45 degree right traverse over 3 highway lanes to make an exit at about 80mph, clipped my left front end, and left me for dead impaled on a guard rail.  Driver skipped.  Car totalled, but I walked away from that one.  Knee surgery followed.  The seat belt harness saved my life, as pointed out by the state trooper who called in for an ambulance.

DougDG......ROAD TRIP to help Wes move must be cancelled.  Spies report that there are two lists going.  Mrs. Wes' "honey do" list for him AND her growing "knucklehead list" for us.  Suspect Wes is moving items he doesn't like to do to our list.  Devious Ohio trickery.

Buckeye.....I don't need Wes to build a a 5,000 linear foot layout.  4,920 will do, just as long as Don (or was it Doug) doesn't suggest an 80' tunnel as was proposed by others for his/their club layout.  Must be a lot of drinking going on at those club get togethers.  I prefer watching trains, not listening to the noise coming from the tunnel portal, wondering what running trains look like and staring at scenicing.  BTW.....how do you rerail the train wrecks in a tunnel that long?

BTW....Brent,  speaking of layouts, your initial master layout plan had you functionally complete by Christmas with scenicing as the final frontier.  Christmas 2008.  If you were Leonardo daVinci painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the Pope would have fired you by now. Big Smile  Seriously, your labor of love continues to impress.  Just don't pull an Ole Timer and leave the shop vac switched to 'blow."  I cringed reading his post, picturing a similar domestic faux pas or two in my household.  I accidentally forgot to turn off the the water to a kitchen faucet I was swapping out while wife was chatting with a neighbor on the front porch.  Water spraying everywhere.  With me screaming at the top of my lungs for help, wife strolled in with neighbor, laughing her brains out.  "My husband.....not much grey matter upstairs."

Wes......Chief could use that cast iron stove in your basement during his visits for his midnight popcorn/reclinerizing routine, unless you provide a microwave to go with the full fridge.  Thanks for the pics...full fridge means more storage for goodies to supplement our beer supplies when we all (have to) move in visit. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Brutus.... cough syrup with a beer chaser.  Works for me.  Now hoping you, the wife, and the little one kick this crud.  Prayers.  Chief's suggestion that you take small nips of the cough syrup as required rather than a full dose.....works better that way for me and keeps the cough in check, though you may want to reverse the above process and do the beer first.

Patrick....what do you do when the cows start coughing?

Dennis goes to York this year, provided the cavalry coming on board is proficient and efficient.

Kurt.....if the 4 year old daughter's knowlege of Natural History things has caught up to you, what are you going to do by the time she turns 5? Big Smile  Those are the types of moments we all wish we could have caught on videotape.  My cameras always stay fully charged and at the ready to catch those granddaughter and dog moments.

Jon.....  [tup] Thumbs Up on your work with inner city kids.  Change is made one kid at a time.  Parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors.

RaySP.....re trying to keep a lid on our weight while reading Chief's culinary indulgences.  Don't forget the Tardis posts.  Beer and pastries may not mix for some, but there are times at BBQs that a similar mix occurs.  CA mountain snow vistas and the beautiful views made our local news during the past two weeks on the right coast.

Mitch..... "Work?!?!?"  Maynard G. Crebbs (Bob Denver) from Dobie Gillis.  As a kid, I was in love with Tuesday Weld when she made her appearances on that show.

Ole Timer..... was that a scolding you got from the wife, a scaulding, or a scolding scaulding? Shock

SirJames....your frigid temps are headed our way after the rain moves out tonight.  Stop it already!  If I wanted Michigan weather I would have moved there!

Roy.....usually retirement is a dream that becomes a reality.  Seems like for so many the reality is moving back to a dream. Banged Head

Have a good day, ya'll.  And do it with a smile. Big Smile

Thanks Banks!  I'll clean it up and see what happens.  There is another fireplace upstairs, so we can huddle around that for emergency heat.  It if wasn't so big, I'd put it in the workshop...I mean third bay of the garage...:)

BRENT,

Coaling area is coming slow but ok.  I changed all the 0-42 Lionel switches with K-line 0-42 switches.  Reason was because the CNW S2 Switcher kept on shorting out or just plane stopping at the Lionel switches.  Very frustrating.  A guy down the road from me that has a small train shop that he runs out of his house had the KL switches so went there at got em for 32 bucks each.  Also I built a coal mover.  When the rotary tipple dumps the coal, I have it deposited in a bucket.  I didn't like that.  So what I did was take an old paper shredder, took out the old motor.  Those shedders have forward and reverse, so it will work for me.  I rigged it up so I have a inch wood auger bit on it.  I had a 1 inch inside diameter stainless steel pipe that I put the bit in.  Cut out an oblong slot for coal to go in.  Turn on motor switch it to reverse, sends coal up auger into tube then up to top of layout. I have to make the housing for motor and auger bit, but it does work fine.  Now I just gotta figure out where to put it.  So maybe over weekend I'll do some work on it and post some pics.  I need to do lots of scenery though too.  All in time?

 Wes,

In my area of central  PA. that wood burner is worth several hundred dollars.

Put it on Ebay  as pick up only. Two or three people and a refridgerator dolly will get it out without much difficulty. The stairs will be fine.

Morning all.Freezing here again, a little snow/ice - just enough to make things miserable.  Bride woke up with the flu / some bug so I am running things since I am 'working at home today. Teens off successfully. Next, the youngest, then I'll check in with her. Wes, congrats on the home - basement looks wonderful. Maybe the stove would come apart in pieces (unbolt or cut apart). Brutus, I think the issue with this particular bathroom is the builder lazily put in a Y pipe in the wrong place down below...may eventually need a more... powerful toilet but that has its own probs. Jack, good memories of your Finger Lakes reference. I canoed them with my dad and brothers when I was a teen - my dad was nuts, we were pretty young - canoed and portaged seven of them in a week. Ole Timer, good story about the sawdust. Patrick, that was a good joke. I like good country jokes. Jack, by the way, part of McHenry County has been pretty suburbanized, but the rest is still open. Our park district gives lessons in sailing on the actual Crystal Lake. I would be so cool to really learn. Nice chat with the Chief yesterday. Ooops, gotta run the youngest to school.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is 26 degrees. Snowing hard. Can't see the trees out front. Beautiful.

Today is a busy day. I have a bunch of chores to do. Wife is taking her dog to the groomer's. Maybe relax later. Leg is better today. Hurt bad yesterday.  Not much else new here.

Dining car was here and we had the usual for breakfast.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI now but at 6:30 AM it wasn't.  A thin layer of snohio froze on the roads, turning I-74 into a skating rink.  Stopping at an exit and then creeping along at 30 to 40 MPH the rest of the way got me to work safely.  Tired already.  Did the YMCA routine and watched Lost last night.  That was it.  I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast this morning.  Beacon is lit.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' Fellas.

Well I got the call yesterday that the paints are in at the LTS. I can now start work on the station! Also stopped at Lowes to pick up the last section of skirtting for the the one end of the layout. Should have that installed tonight. Been thinking about the curved wooden trestle bridge a lot lately and I need to get back into the train room and do some measuring. I'm very concerned that it won't work now due to the swingout of the AC6000 (@ 1" leading and trailing on the O45 curves)... so we'll see. Also, if I do ever get my KLine Allegheny running again the swingout on that is a bit more so the bridge would have to be about 1.25" wider on the outer edge and 3/4" on the inside edge than I originally calculated, then with the trestle taper I'm looking at a bottom width approx 7.5 inches which is much more than I wanted to go... Also concerned that a modern deisel (AC6000) may not look appropriate on a 19th century trestle bridge... thoughts?

Looks like Kurt has caught the hickups again.

Roy - Need to discuss the power conversion we discussed at October York. If you could email me the list of components that I'll need I can make sure to have what I'll need on hand. Is this something we can discuss at April York, or via email/phone?

Mitch - Just remember April York is around the corner... you have to be there... can't break tradition! Smile

Chief - Lucy has relieved Burg of his watchdog duties?

Jim - sorry I missed the post about your daughter. Prayers for her and your family. On Saturday we were heading up to Uniontown, PA for lunch and saw a white car with a truck on it's hood. Appeared to me that the truck pulled out into the intersection and the white car could not stop in time. Emergency personnel were still on the scene when we were heading back to Grantsville about 1.5 hours later.

Brutus - get better soon bud! OH - got your email about the ice cream parlor. No I don't have one, and the one on EBay is damaged... I have a lot of homage being paid to SusieQ already so not sure I need another. Smile

Kurt - Re: RT & Patrick... I was starting to get concerned that the article was written ABOUT them! Shock

Edit:
Laz - it only took a week, but I remember now what I wanted to ask you... How is the coaling area coming along? Haven't seen any pictures? Confused

As Patrick stated earlier today heres the no kissing story.

Partick, RT:  Are you two causing trouble at the train station?  Give her a smooch and get on the coach already!

Wes:  Looks like a huge basement!  The fridge looks like it will hold some banilla too!  Maybe take the wood out of the stove first.  Smile,Wink, & Grin  I think that stove has to go.  A sledge will break up that cast iron.  Wear hearing and eye protection.  Thanks for inviting Laz  to that party!  Maybe the bear can lift it.

Jim:  Sorry I missed your post about your daughter's accident.  Prayers for you and your family.

Morning to all.  Just like Roy I have been too busy with w**k.  Never dull spent most of yesterday at work piddling with video guys who were trying to figure out why our cable TV signal is poor. Turns out one of the amplifiers that was installed was defective.  Never did get it fixed to my satisfaction.  Think it is a hardware issue with TV Tuner cards. Got an early meeting so I must get going.

Take care,

Mitch

Evening all!

Sort of locked out of the forum for a few days. Don't know why - would come up page not found. I could get to the CTT web site. So I decided to relog in (not sure why I did not think of that sooner) and it works again. Oh well...

Jim (sturge) - good to hear your daughter is getting better from the accident. Hope it continues to go well.

Not much to report here. Been too busy with w**k. Tried to retire a few years ago and now I work more than before. Well the extra cash is good.

Hope everyone else is good!

Have a great evening!

Regards, Roy

Good Evening from Southern Ohio

The weather is calling for rain and snow tonight.  We shall see.

To all who have had my daughters in your thoughts and prayers, especially those who have PM’d me, thank you very much.  It is very heartwarming to experience the fellowship and your caring, you guys are great!.  Daughter in LA is sore but getting better. She realizes just how blessed she is. Insurance for the car and medicals should not be an issue.  The eyewitnesses to the wreck make things go a lot smoother, as Fife was referring to.  Oldest daughter, is making decisions, knowing she has the prayers and support of a lot of folks.  God’s will shall prevail, but she needs to be open to hear God speak to her and have the courage to act on God’s direction..

Received a 592A crossing gate off the bay.  A little tweaking and cleaning and it is working well.  Paint for the most part is good but the base will need re-done.  Should be a nice quick project.

Wes – Can’t imagine what it would be like to move.  A cast iron stove I installed a long time ago was huge.  Even after taking it apart as much as possible I questioned the strength of the steps as we were going down the steps.  Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Brent – The instant hot water tanks are pretty neat.  Unlimited hot water but limited in the volume at one time.  If you do multiple showers and laundry at  the same time may creat an issue, but otherwise you don’t run out.  I am going to change out the Tank to a tankless system at church and at home in the ’09 budget.  With just the bride and myself we are wasting a hot of energy in keeping water hot in a tank.  The kind RT suggested was installed in a church where the pastor is a friend of mine and they are really impressed with the savings.

Old Timer – LOL! Been there!

Chuck – You out there?

May God bless

Jim

Chief.....I keep telling you that grits makes you see the doctor more often, but then again, maybe you are trying to see the lady doctor more often.  Shock

Whistling  SHHH SHHH

Evening all.  Meeting this afternoon and then wife had great dinner ready.  Then we watched a movie.  Think the title was And There Was Blood or something like that.  About the great oil driller and his doings.  Interesting.  Now she is asleep on the couch and doing better than this AM.  Will not go to bed so I have to wake her early to go to work.  BURRR

Wes, congrats.Approve  Brutus, think you have the pewmonia.Dead  Don B, moving South looks better every day to you. Whistling  Old Timer, women have to fuss about something. Sigh  Patrick, one good thing about cattle farming.  As long as you have cattle, you may go broke but will not go hungry. Wink

Cold and rainy but said we might hear thunder????  Cold and thunder????  Oh well.  Might get a little Snohio on Sunday.

Good night.  Sleep tight and don't let the Ohio bed bugs bite.

PS: Lucy just allerted on something.  Probably a cat tiptoeing across the concrete.  We went out.  A lot warmer than at 6 PM.  Wind from the South.  Front must be coming through.  Still no thunder.

Kurt, I was off yesterday to babysit and today to sit - will go back tomorrow though.  Coughing is a lot better, just tired and achey.  Wife had this since last week, but she has asthma and it went to bronchitis.  I'm hoping I'll have it kicked faster, like by tomorrow Thumbs Up

Had a long talk today with an old friend who retired and moved to SC.  Listened a lot.  Got caught up on all the shenanigans in Washington - apparenlty, buried in that 1000 page tome, they repealed the Clinton Welfare Reform Act.  I just don't know what to think about this - I pray that things get better.

Watched a bunch of train videos - one had a little coal operation with full cars being used to pull empties up a hill to be loaded.  Hmmm, looked like something interesting to model!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Well if you want the fireplace out of there contact laz and borrow his bear you might have to wait till spring thou but thats about when you will be moving in so that should be just about right. Plug the frige in and fill it with beer for help moving and you'll get just about everyone here we'll hop in the tardis and head over.

Now on the serious note I would help if I was closer as I imagin most here would.

hope you enjoy your new home.

You might if you don't want it try selling tell them they must move it no help from you or call a junk dealer and see what he'll give you for it or a place that scaps might pick it up and give you a few dollars for it they probally would give the least out of all thou. you could see what it will take to rehook it up and have a woodburner for the winter to heat the basement acually it would help heat the whole house.

There actually is a fridge in the basement...it's just empty!  There is also a cast iron wood burning fireplace that I can't even begin to budge.  That thing must weigh 800 lbs.  Not sure how they got it down there, but it's disconnected from the wall already and sitting on plywood.  I took a bunch of pictures tonight and am uploading them to shutterfly now.  I'll include a link later for those who are interested.

As Patrick stated earlier today heres the no kissing story

WARRINGTON (AFP) – A train station has erected a no kissing sign to stop lovers going full steam ahead with their over-amorous farewells.

Commuters have been told: if you want to get up to that kind of business, do it in the car park.

The sign has gone up at the drop-off point at Warrington Bank Quay station in the town of Warrington, between Liverpool and Manchester.

A man in a hat and a woman with a curly-looking hair-do puckering up show people where they cannot get down to some full-on lip-locking before boarding the 07:22 to Llandudno.

A similar kissing permitted sign has also been erected in a zone where smooching is considered tolerable.

"We have not banned kissing in the station," insisted a spokesman for operators Virgin Rail.

"But we have put the sign up at the drop off point because it is not a very big area and it often gets busy with lots of traffic.

"The sign is a light-hearted way of getting people to move on quickly.

"If people wish to spend a little more time with their loved ones before they leave, then they should park in the short-stay car park nearby."

The sign has evoked memories of director David Lean's 1945 masterpiece "Brief Encounter," based on Noel Coward's story of forbidden romance on a railway platform in then buttoned-down Britain.

The station scenes were filmed at Carnforth.

But now any encounters outside Warrington Bank Quay will have to be very brief indeed to avoid Virgin's wrath.

The busy station links the town with the major cities London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester.

The sign is part of a one million pound station refurbishment plan.
