GOOD MORNING

Chuck #3 gas prices for us retired folks is just keeping us home except for must do. I still don't think I will be using the boat if gas goes to $4.00 like they say. and what they say is usually what they have already decided. I got to think that travel related business's will be hurting also. Of course most working folks can still afford to travel but us old ones will be staying home.

We have sun this morning going to near 50,maybe. Enjoy,,,S.J.

SJ,
Susieq and I were discussing this very topic last night. IF petrol hits $4.00 per gallon we decided to take our 1 week vacation at home and just do a couple short 'day or two' trips. We had been planning a nice vacation to either Napa Valley or Arizona but if petrol hits $4.00 per gallon that will be way too much for either of those trips as they would both require a good bit of driving.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing $4.00 by Memorial Day, and probably a bit higher around Labor Day. I'm not going to comment on our leadership just a few miles South of my current location. But we did get a letter in the mail from the IRS telling us we'll be getting a check in May! YEAH! They can send a form letter (which had to be printed) to inform us of our pending windfall, but they could simply save the postage and increase the check? Confused [%-)] BTW - to get a check you MUST file income tax return for 2007... even if you haven't filed one in previous years... hmmm... think there are alterior motives here????

Fife - While visiting with the LHS owner yesterday he informed me that CSX has a tunnel that goes UNDER MT Airy... told me where the two portals are and how to 'access' them for pictures... so we have a stop for our excursion next weekend! Thumbs Up [tup]

Happy Hump Day, everyone.

Temperature 50 degrees and climbing from another chilly night. Taught last class before Spring Break last night. Next class on Monday 7 April. Have two sets of killer take home tests to grade. Lots of problems, lots of details, lots of steps to check. One of my Monday night students told one of her classmates she thought "the test was evil". I hope she meant the test and not me.

Scrambled eggs, toast, fried Spam, and a Coke coming on the dining car in a little while. Then out to the yard to continue weeding flower beds and pulling camphor and golden rain trees that pop up everywhere.

Trains later. Having fun with my LEGACY NYC GP-7. The slow speeds are really incredible. Sent Bob Keller an email at CTT to tell him that I can control speed and direction with LEGACY on PW Lionel engines by addressing new ZW at TR 1, 2, 3, or 4 to control voltage. Don't know about diesel horns as didn't have any D cell batteries at hand to put in the engines. Lionel told him that couldn't be done. I guess that's what happens when you don't read all the directions!!!

Have a great day everyone.

88 - The pharmacy on the north side of town used to be the original B&O station for Mt Airy.  That tunnel goes through Parr's ridge.(long time ago they used to use inclines)  The west portal is the better angle shot.  Just east of town is Twin Arch road, which would be a better shot...if we get lucky enuff to get a daytime train.  Have you explored Mt Airy Cold Storage, and do they still have a SW1 stationed there?

Brent I totally agree, not only gas but the cost per nite for a bed and shower has gone up a whole heap also. A two week car trip is going to be big$$$. unles we share expenses with others. Our trip to Tenn. last summer was with my daughter and family or we would have only traveled nearby like you said. The boat is for fishing and I'm not claiming poverty here its a question of is it worth it. As much as I like to fish I'm thinking NO. Like Chuck my wifes car is a 1996 Geo Prizem w/46000 miles and I have a 2000 Ranger w/15000 miles.

Fife - The Train Depot is across the street from the Pharmacy, so I've seen it quite a few times. Smile [:)] Not sure where Mt Airy Cold Storage is... I'll look it up.

I haven't quite figured out the schedule yet. There is a CSX coal train that goes through Sykesville @ 4:00 every day. Not sure where it goes from there, but it appears to head toward Mt Airy.

Morning all!

Mitch - sorry about your dog. It is pretty tough to face losing your dog, particularly one that has been around quite a while. Good to hear that the hiring is going well. LAZ is still looking for that shop teacher job posting! I am ready for York also - need a break.

Buckeye - stop sharing spoons with Fifer Shock [:O]

Gas - ouch - but we are still driving to Tenn this summer - cheaper than flying for 4 of us. As much as gas is, you would think it is still $0.50/gal the way the roads are so crowded here and seem to be getting worse. Last time gas was this high the roads cleared out.

Cloudy here and supposed to be 80! Cool [8D]

We pack up the 12 x 28 foot modular layout tonight to take it to Grapevine TX for the Thomas event this weekend and the next. No rain predicted so far.

Have a great day all!

Morning all. Having a hectic morning because nothing is working - no email, voicemail, enterprise stuff, all sys down as they say - at least the web works and I found a back-door into a system so the staff can work. It's a hardware failure somewhere - not my responsibility fortunately.

Daughter left me a message from France as I left work yesterday saying her ATM card suddenly stopped working - the very card I had laboriously arranged to work seems to have some sort of magic limit on it. An hour on the phone later, and after having to get off my train home to get to a branch before it closed, I hope it's fixed. I did have a fleeting thought this would be good because of the rate she's burning through her cash.

Did relax a bit late last night plotting out some more track changes. Andj - Bugs Bunny is the greatest! Fife, Hoboken is a real happenin' place these days - Frank wouldn't recognize it. Wink [;)] They still have that huge Lackawanna sign on the ferry terminal.  Mike, I suffered through 4 years of losing every game in my high school soccer career - of course, I'm old enough that I was on the first team the school ever had - LOL.  Don, glad you seem to be feeling bettter - Can you get a copy of the Kalmbach book on Operating by Tony Koester? A great read and a solid intro to operating.  Kurt, now you've done it - I'll be thinking of Monty Python all day. "I think he's dead. No I'm not. <Clunk>"

Good Morning--

The gas prices really are hurting the whole economy along with other factors, dang it. With that said I'm doing a few things to help out the situation, at least for me. I'm trying hard to make the most of my driving days, when I run errands I try to incorporate several stops into that day whereas I used to just go when I felt like it. My yearly mileage has gone way down but you'd never know that when I look at what I spend for fuel.

My son and I have been planning on a trip to Colorado this summer for over 9 months with our motorcycles, he's from St. Paul and has limited time off. We will trailer our bikes to Denver where we have family and leave the trailer there and spend 5 days in the mountains on the bikes. My truck has just over 100K and runs great but I also just get murdered on mileage when I trail the bikes, about 13-14 MPG but you know what, we are still going!! I'm not going to live my life with regrets and if that means I drive less now to save money, so be it. If he had more time off we would ride out (42 MPG for both of us at interstate speeds) but it's harder for me to do 670 miles on the bike in a day whereas in the truck it's easy.

Amtrac is just south of us 40 miles and runs to Denver, do you suppose they would let us put the bikes in the baggage car for the 12 hour trip? HA, that would be fun but their schedule is so unpredictable it's just crazy.

Can't imagine what marina gas prices will be for you folks with boats, ugg. Enough rambling, make it a great day, I am

Good Afternoon y'all!

My morning case is done.  I am hoping to get out in the next little while to see a friend off at the airport.  He is in the Marines and is heading to the mid east.  has a 4 month old little girl and a loving wife who will miss him terribly.  His and her families are out of state, so we will try to support his wife as much as possible.

Also have to get son to pediatrician as I think he has a sinus infection.  With all the pollen around, I am sure his allergies are acting up too.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good day.

God Bless,

Dennis

MikeC, congratulations on your milestone and the CTT tech tidbits posting coming up.  Does the YMCA have a stairmaster to get in your cardio workout and leg muscle building at the same time?

Grayson, same to you, and keep us updated on your layout.  I look forward to your postings, but they've tapered off a bit lately.

RT, hope all your test results come back ok.  I did the entire drill last summer, including eyes and ears, and was relieved everything checked out ok.  Got to cut down on the goodies a bit.

Brent, que pasa with the kitchen light fixture?  I see you haven't lost your computer privileges.

Sir James, regarding fuel prices and finding ways to get more miles per gallon, I've been unsuccesful getting the wife to lighten up with her lead foot. She recently started to complain that the car ride was too rough after I added a couple of psi to her tires.  Told her it must be the dilapidated road conditions from the winter.  You can't win.

Mitch, having been a dog owner all of my life, it pains me to hear about Katie's dilemma.

Hope everyone can stare at some sunshine today.  We'll be in the 50's today with snow forecast for Friday night.

Brent,

I believe I have heard of this tunnel too. No one outside railroad personnel is supposed to know about it I believe. I had a member of my club go there to get a few photos. He got directions at a gas station after about 30 mins of haggling with the attendant for them. It is back far in the woods if I'm not mistaken.

Afternoon all,

Tomorrow is the last school day for the week. That means I leave for York tomorrow night. Have a good rest of the day everyone.

Since no one is around I am making half a pot.someone else can just add more grounds and water. One quick thing here about travel, if people are sharing the cost of the gas the price per gallon is less. a family on a trip, one person is paying full price.

R.I.=Thats funny about your wife saying that about her car tires, mine is always saying her tires look flat. Everybody has told her that is how they look but she still doesn't understand.

Evenin' All.

Marvelous weather here of late, even the Easter Bunnie was seen carrying his towel and sunblock heading for the beach with his Boogie Board.

Spent the better part of the day doing some minor loco repairs, re-applying some detail pieces on Atlas SD-35's and improving the smoke unit output on my K-Line Mikado. I love those Atlas loco's but every time I take them to the museum it seems that I find some sort of detailing in the towel when I unwrap them at home.Sad [:(]

Been in contact with another forumite about a visit to the museum in month or so, one of the perks of business travel. I'll let that person decide as to whether they want to announce their plans, if nothing else I post a photo on SPF after their visit.

If you visit that tunnel watch out for the RR cops you guys, they aren't known for having good manners. Black Eye [B)]

I ran the mower to check it out. I'm ready to mow grass. Now it's going to rain for 5 days. Yuk.  I guess I will run trains, instead.

Hi LAZ.....Don't be a stranger.

Good Evening all,

Buckeye, Thanks for posting that Bridge Link.  A lot of interesting info.

Colin, I won't be at the large scale show this year, to many schedule conflicts.

Brent, I read somewhere what it cost to send out that letter, don't remember the exact amount but it was 200 million +.  That layout of yours is coming along nicely.

Mitch, I feel your pain, we have lost to many dogs over the years.

Don, It sounds like you are getting over the worst of it.  Don't go to wild, it can come back, have friends that had that happen.

More good news on the gasoline front.  An interesting article in today's WSJ.  It seems that Saudi Arabia has been overstating their natural gas reserves and after to many dry holes some of their partners are pulling out.  Since they use a lot of natural gas for themselves, it is likely that they will start keeping more crude to replace it.  Not an immediate thing but 10 years or so down the road.

Mitch, prayers for Katie - I hope it is just something else and clears up....

I paid $3.20 per gallon for gasoline the other day :(  Just talked with my buddy Jeff to see if we are going fishing again some time this Summer.  Maybe get with Ron (other fishing buddy who got fired due to depression/migraines recently) and be like old times for a few days?  Wish they would all stop smoking though - caugh, caugh!  Wink [;)]

Doug, hope you get that card fixed for Butterfly.  What a mess, especially when they are far away.  Going to S.J.'s tonight?

Sir James, got some Banilla?  Chewy said she knows a cure for the smell.  She'll come over and give your rug a treatment that is guaranteed to completely remove that other smell from your mind!

Anj, didja make a wrong turn in Alb-a-cur-kay?  Laugh [(-D]

Wow - I'm surprised there was a Monty Python reference and another reference to SPAM, and nobody else went there already?!  Okay, I dood it!  Spam, Spam, Spam, Spammity Spam!

John - I think that SA does not actually supply very much (percentage) of our oil now.  But, this will affect the world market and so be another blow against us working and retired guys.

Good evening everyone!

John, great to see your post.  I have been working on the wiring of the doll house.  Man are these things intricate!  We are looking at about 16-20 lights for this project.  Thanks again for the great photos that explain so much more than the book.

Well, you certainly can tell it is Easter break around these parts.  Only a few cases this week and since tomorrow looks real light, I am taking the day off to take the family to a amusement park in South Georgia.  Kids are planning on the water park as it will be in the high 70s.  I hope to enjoy a few rides, but we usually are good for about 4 hours, then come home.

Son has no homework from school this week, but we will still have him do some Chinese lessons and some reading.  For 5 years old, he picks things up so fast.  Besides, we have to keep him busy as he has too much energy.

I hope everyone has a blessed night.

Dennis

Brutus, we were posting at the same time; Gas for one of our cars runs about $3.40 as it needs 93 octane.  Hope you do get together with your friends.  Even when all this high cost of gas hits us, we need to get together with friends.  Especially your one friend, depression is nothing to take lightly.  I have had good friends with lots to be grateful for still be depressed.  Another reason Faith is a great thing to have.  You know the final chapter and it is good.

Dennis, you are right!  No matter how down I ever get about something, I know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and all I have to do is hang in there.  I think Ron is doing better now that he is at home, but he's trying to get a disability retirement.  He's already retired from the Army and I won't be surprised if a lot of his problems aren't due to military service....  Sounds like you have a great time planned, hope your boy is over his sinusitis soon!

Good night, Sirrah Jimbo Uno.  Banilla!  Chewy and I will be right over, gonna knock on Dennis' door and see if he wants to join the roadtrip!  Doug and Kurt are probably already on their ways, they aren't answering the special "red" phones!  Laugh [(-D]

OK, I'm not being very humorous tonight. I know, I'm tired. I blame the chocolate, and the elephants.  Dennis, that's pretty wise. Did you hear a Shell station in our town mistakenly posted a $2.49 price (instead of 3.49) for 45 minutes? It was a mobbed.

SJ,

It kind of works like this for me.  One day wife thinks the tires look low on air.  Siezing the opportunity, I add a couple of pounds, even though they are up to snuff.  The next day she says the car rides too hard.  This ruckus over 2 psi.

Last week we pull in for gas in her car, which she doesn't like to drive in the winter, prefers mine.  I reset the driver's information control that tracks the mileage for each of the past 12 tanks of gas.  She notices that the mpg shot up 3-4 mpg back in early December and stayed elevated.  "How did that happen?" she asks.  "You weren't driving the car."  GLARE   SILENCE.  I do have to admit she gets her money's worth with the horsepower and brakes.

Silence is as golden as is feigned ignorance when dealing with her logic.

I did have a fleeting thought this would be good because of the rate she's burning through her cash.

Doug - we gave our daughter $300 for fun spending money for her NYC trip. She spent it the first full day they were there. One of her hotel roommates took the rest of her money that was for food and necessities and only gave her what she needed. She somehow made it through the next 5 days - including the night they spent at LaGuardia airport. To be fair - the one full day was their only scheduled shopping day Tongue [:P]
