Now I remember why I did not followup on watching the program.  The guy just plain stinks.  He could bore the t-i-ts off of a bore hog. Shock  Went to sleep about 3/4 the way through [probably a little help from codeine].  He has to be from Ohizo or Ioway. Thumbs Down  Brutus, a little vanilla on top of a warm apple pie from Mc Donalds helped the cold tonight.  All that walking today has the legs stiff after reclinerizing.  Good night.  Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs or Yankees bite [6 is one, half a dozen is another Laugh

Don......these items are the finest examples of the Santa Claus With His Reindeer motiff that I have seen in all my 57 years and has my mind firmly planted back in the 1950s, a time when folks took great pride in personalizing their outside Christmas decorations, for the benefit and enjoyment of families, friends, neighbors, and the endless streams of cars loaded with strangers and their young ones making their annual traditional Christmas drive.  Where did you buy them?  Thumbs UpSmile,Wink, & Grin Thumbs Up

Good morning all,

It is a little warmer in SE Indiana today with temps near 40.  Worked on the standard gague layout last night over at my dad's.  My original idea is not playing out too well.  May have to rethink some things.  I did some "work" work at home as well.  That could be going better as well.  Wife is still sore after her tumble last Friday, and she has to work today.  Could be a long day for her.  She went to watch a court hearing yesterday as part of her CASA work and she also is starting the investigation on her case.  It is very interesting work.  I had the usual fare on the dining car this morning.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good Evening all from beautiful Southern Ohio

Just a quick note, it's official, I am now Ordained!  Ceremony went well, reception at Schmitts was great!  I'll catch up later

May God bless

Jim

Jim......I apologize for being the last person to formally congratulate you on your ordination.  I think you can agree that if ever there was a bunch that needed someone like you to put in a good word for them upstairs, it would be us.  In your own words that have stuck with me this past year, may God bless.

Good Morning All

Overcast and 30s today, but one day only then down again.

Brutus, for shame, banilla is good anytime and hot fudge makes it better.

No plans for today yet, maybe check with bride and see if she wants to go out today before it gets cold again. If not there are the trains to run. Enjoy today.

Morning all!

Sorry I missed the train show...or not.  In bed and out by 9:30pm.  I did see the BNSF Lehigh Valley show on RFD the other day....very well done.  Scenery is amazing!

sir james I

Brutus, for shame, banilla is good anytime and hot fudge makes it better.

Mmmmmmm Hot fudge, 'banilla, and pecans....MMmmmmmmm

Ready to start the scenicing....Still researching ballast ideas.  Trying to understand mainline to spur to yard ballast transitions...any ideas are appreciated.  Maybe I'll have a bit done by Christmas.  Been reading the latest Dave Frary Scenery book.  Really good!  Still gathering rocks, and sticks....

Anyone use the Heki Micro Flor (rayon fiber weeds)?  Do you like it?

How about Super Sage trees?

Christmas Cards today...I hope...

..........Fed deer tonight.  Walked to the spillway with Maglite.  To my surprise it was not stopped up with pinestraw.  Walked back to truck which was running with headlights on.  When I got near the truck, I shined the maglite behind it and there was a deer standing 20 feet behind the tailgate.  She looked at me, I gave the special whistle and she turned and walked into the edge of the woods and watched me put out the corn.   Drove up a little ways and they all started coming out to eat with me out of the truck and shinning them.  Got to go eat dinner.  Later  [cough cough cough]

Chief........based on what Laz has written about his hunting blunders failures setbacks snafus bad luck,  he should hire you to go along with him and his brother on their next hunting foray into the woods.  Just remind him that he doesn't have to wait until the bucks fly to take the shot.  But if they do fly, they have antlers, and he shoots, he's going to have what you refer to as a "come to Jesus" meeting with Santa.  Most unpheasant unpleasant.  May have to call on Jim Phish to officiate an impromptu funeral.  Hope you are feeling better.

Morning all.  The next three days are a mix of 'off' and working from home as the bride goes on a 'silent' retreat and I take care of things here. Don't see how the silent part is possible.  Cold and grey here. What else is new? It'll be like this for the next six months. ;)  Mike C, hope your bride is feeling better.  Apple pie and ice cream - for breakfast - would be a good idea. Mmmmmm. Y'know, I've never had real banilla -  can you get it in a grocery store? Where would you find it?

Kurt, when I was in N scale, I used various flavors of fake fur for fields, and many of the Noch products - including the electrostatic flock for 'grass' and other textures of field - and Silage trees. Frankly, I found the Woodland Scenic ones - with the blank armatures dipped in various greens - better to work with. They European stuff was expensive but fantastic for small scenes. Funny, now in O gauge, I prefer much 'broader' good enough  scenes...

.............Now Burg [lab mix] is moving slowly when he gets up.

Chief.......have you tried giving Burg the combo OTC joint supplements that contain glucosamine hydrochloride and pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin sulfate sodim among other contents?  I'm pretty skeptical about manufacturers' claims and anecdotal information.  But when our vet suggested this for our big guy (125 lbs), we took the plunge and ordered off the net some Doctors Foster and Smith Joint Care 1+ Primary Plus.  Nothing ventured nothing gained.  Doesn't cost an arm and a leg either.

Lo and behold, within 14 days Duke was showing noticeable back end improvement upon rising from naps and we were able to titrate the dosage back at the three week mark to half, as advised by the instructions.  The instructions said it might take 4-6 weeks to see results.

I had said nothing to my wife about his improvement to make sure what I thought I was seeing was more than wishful thinking.  It wasn't.  The stuff actually worked.

We were also also considering, with the vet's input of course, the use of a maintenance dose of a human OTC anti-inflammatory/arthritis pain medication but put that one on the back burner because the joint supplements were working so well.

kpolak - The easiest way to change the profile on a siding is to eliminate the roadbed, and secure the track directly to the platform.  Sidings and spurs do not have high maintainance roadbeds under them,  matter of fact, you'll do best to have the rails poking out of the dirt inda look.

As far as ground scenery, easy/cheap way is to get a second hand gallon of any tan paint, and several shades of Woodland Scenic green turf.  Work in one foot sections.

Trees by SCENIC EXPRESS.  Get the big box of trees, then a couple jars of scenic flock. Voila!

Good morning all!  Little update on the case I spoke of the other day.  I went and saw patient this morning...looks good.  Then I ran into the surgeon who did the original case....he thanked me and told me he was going to send patient home today, so that will be a good Christmas for a couple of folks. But, I must say, I only did what I have been trained to do. God put me there at that time for that purpose.  All the training in the world doesn't help if you are not there when it is needed.

Chief, I believe you were at the lake when we were all commenting on the show.  Yeah, the host needs some help, but the program is OK.  I usually watch it with the sound down.

Well, Saxby Chamblis won here.  I am glad for that, but everyone here is glad that it is over!  It is nice to be back to the peaceful place we normally have.  I would not be able to stand living in Ohio, if for no other reason than the "Battleground State status".  How do you stand all the political adds?

I am about done here.  When I leave, I am going to lunch with one of my friends from church.  For those who have seen the movie, he was the Lt. who played opposite Kirk Cameron at the fire department.  His name is Ken Bevell, and he is a great guy.  Right after filming his scenes, he got deployed to the mid east as he is a Capt. in the Marine Corps.  When ever I see one of our fighting men at a resturant, I buy their meal and tell the waitress to just say "from a grateful American".  This time I know the person, so it makes it a little more special.

God Bless,
Dennis

Morning.  Got a bit of a cold.  It really has a bite on me.  Got to get out and water greenhouse and then gutters and leaves.  Got "holiday" [do not like those words used for Christmas] reception with the Greater Raleigh Chamber at 5:30.  Got to go to neighboring town and pick up its Mayor [a close buddy].  He has early stages of Parkinson's.  Does not affect his driving but I have always helped him with the driving to events and will keep on.  Just blasted one of the Editors of the News and Observer [one of the state's largest newspapers].  Printed something completley wrong about Rolesville and the battle with Raleigh over growth adn waterlines.  I talked to the County Commissioners a little over a year ago about the same thing he wrote then.  In the Conuty Commissioners meeting I call his repeorting "**** Poor Reporting",  Well, after correcting his mistatements, I just repeated it in writing to his big editor.  Better get outside.  Wasted most of morning on Town and writing to the paper.  Later

PS: That crazy guy in CA is still trying to fly off his roof in a plywood sleigh and plywood reindeer. Shock

From 12/02/08:

Well, it was an exciting day yesterday.  You ever have one of those moments when God puts you in a particular place for a particular reason?  One of our friends from Sunday School was having an operation.  I had finished my heart case and just hung around for a little while...not sure why, but then I went to check on our friend and he was ashen.  I had his pressure checked and it was way too low for comfort.  Brought him back to surgery and found a clip had come off of a artery.  We were able to give him back 7 units of his own blood, and his color returned.  Just thinking of what would  have happened if I was not lead to stay late and check.  Normally, I don't like to do that, I check the day after as I don't want to interfere with anothers treatment.

Update 12/03/08:

Good morning all!  Little update on the case I spoke of the other day.  I went and saw patient this morning...looks good.  Then I ran into the surgeon who did the original case....he thanked me and told me he was going to send patient home today, so that will be a good Christmas for a couple of folks. But, I must say, I only did what I have been trained to do. God put me there at that time for that purpose.  All the training in the world doesn't help if you are not there when it is needed.

God Bless,
Dennis

Dennis......Some may maintain that this was simply a case of pure unadulterated luck or coincidence, and at one point in time I might have been one of them.  Not any more.  At the risk of being redundant from one of my previous posts, the words a surgeon spoke to me that I will never forget:  "There is only one Person who decides who lives and who dies, and He/She has never yet called me in on a medical consultation."

This is one you need to resurrect from the brain archives when you are having a particularly bad day. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Afternoon all from beautiful Southern Ohio

I am at work but today is my monthly turn to be an operator rather than a supervisor.  To maintain training quals, once a month supervisors do the duties of operators to keep their skills sharp.  It is almost like a day off compaired to the regular stuff I do.I aquired a beauty of a 954 observation car in a box of stuff I bought for $30.  Real deal.  Thank you Thank you !  I started to clean it up last night and I believe it will really be nice.  I’ll try and post some pics in SPF.Don – The sleigh scene looks really nice.  Did you have a pattern or make it up?  I really like it.Jack & Laz – Thank you very much.  My bride reminds me that coveting more toy trains is wrong, but I keep rationalizing, there are worse things I could do.  I do have my outlines for services ready for use as needed.KPOLAK – Here is a picture that may be what you are trying to replicate.

 Nice shots, Jim

Kurt, I've used both gravel I've swept up (and sifted) from the bottom of the driveway after a winter - it's free and I'm cheap. And different flavors of what is offered by Woodland Scenics - too fine even in O scale in my opinion - and fishtank gravel. A neighbor gave me a bag of left-over garden 'gravel' which he got at Home Depot which was very fine - colors ranging from black through grey to white.

Really snowing here. Bride not happy to be heading westward into it to go on her retreat - though she's only going an hour away - to Don's hometown of Rockford...

Kurt, don't use anything that looks / smells like litter if you have a cat that gets into the layout area. Voice of experience speaking....

Jim......your better half has this one totally wrong.

Tell her, as she is very well aware, that you are now an officially ordained expert on the topic.  Use the same poker face that you used for your picture.  If that doesn't work, tell her there is no commandment that prohibits coveting toy trains.  If that doesn't work, tell her that by coveting toy trains which are not against the commandments you ARE diligently avoiding a violation of the 10th commandment which prohibits you from coveting your neighbor's goods/possessions, or in this case, trains.  If that doesn't work...........RUN!!!!!

This interpretation of things might provide you and our other friends on the Pot with some valuable insight as to why my parents dreaded each and every parents/teachers conference when I was young.  Or why, after having had me for a student, some of the teachers had to take a leave of absence, suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome.  And the teachers didn't dare hold me back a grade because they realized they would have to suffer through another year of me.

Jim, to Covet is to want what someone else has, you just want to get what is in the catalog.  Now if you ask my wife, she'd say I am more on the verge of gluttony with regard to trains.  That is a sin of a different nature, and one for which I am well prepared to repent of.

Was a decent day.  I was able to escape the hospital to have that lunch I mentioned.  Friend is handing in his papers in February to retire from the USMC.  While he loves the corps, he loves his family more and wants to spend more time with them.  Has a good head on his shoulders.  Not sure what he wants to do, but feels it is God's will for him to step aside.  Then, just as finishing lunch, I got paged back to the hospital for an emergency.  I had to help out the guy on call.  Tough case and not sure the person will survive.  Took a big hit to the heart.  I will have to keep them in my prayers tonight. (Actually, I pray for all our patients).

Hope everyone has a good night.  From what I have seen, seems to be a lot of newer folks posting on the forum.  "Pot" got pushed to page 2.

God Bless,

Dennis

Mike, hope everyone is feeling better!

Don - great work on the display!  Bow

Hmmm - I wonder if you could make a banilla float with hot chocolate instead of root beer?  I love the hot fudge, but my favorite right now is a Culvers Turtle Sundae (2 scoops) - lovely!

Jack - too funny!  Yep, Laz likes to scare 'em up in the air first, doesn't he Whistling

Doug - Apple pie and coffee for breakfast, what a great idea!

Fife, good info on the yard stuff.  Now - do you or Kurt or anyone know of a good book or something on yard "design"?

Dennis, I saw an article about that election last night.  MO is a battleground state, but apparently something went wrong.  Usually, whoever wins MO wins the race and McCain won by about 3000 votes (0.13 percent).  They make a big deal about how MO is a bellweather, so I think that influenced both to spend a lot more here than some other states.

Chief - a newspaper made a mistake?  Shock  You need to invite him to a "Come to Jesus" meeting Wink

Laz - it is FROSTY here for sure!

JIMSP - you are right on all counts.  God was guiding Dennis, no doubt about it.

CSX - I'm here, where are you?  Got your beacon on yet?

Sir James - okay, and awaaaaaaay we go Laugh

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
