Good Morning all,

Just a fly by on the way to work.  I have been busy so doing reading but not posting.  I see Chuck and Buckeye have not posted.  Hope they are doing OK.

Jim F - you may want to hang on to the sidingthe contractor removes to save for future patches.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps again in the 70s.  Winter would be perfect if it stayed like this.  Well, the election results are in.  Congrats to the winners and condolences to the losers although I am not sure if the "winners" are going to feel that way a few months from now, given the situation.  In compliance with the "no-politics" rule, that is all I will say on the matter.  By the time I get home tonight I should have new gutters and gutter shields on the house, which hopefully will mean no more ladder climbing.  I had bran muffins on the dining car this morning for breakfast.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good Morning

I suspect our do nothing president and do nothing congress had a lot to do with yesterdays outcome. We have two more days of summer weather  and then oh boy, down the drain we go. I have a couple of friends coming over today to look at some Lionel items they are interested in, maybe make a sale or two, hope so then I can buy something new. Enjoy your day, the sun still came up this morning....S.J.

Morning all. Another beautiful day in the new capital of the US... Like sir james mentioned, this might be the last nice warm day of the year if the long term forecast is correct.  Happy anniversary, Mike! Glad Kurt told us your secret - I have to share that with my bride. Kurt, love your response to that homework assignment. We get homework all the time in kindergarten now - they call them 'family projects' - LOL.

Ran trains last eve. whilst listening to the radio pundits.  Do you do anything before running an engine that has sat for a while? The 248 sounded kind of grind-y and after flipping it over, I'm not sure what to do to it - I'm afraid of over-oiling.

Good Morning,

South Florida is back to normal temps, around 84 in the afternoon and near 65 at night. Did some tree and weed removal along east side fence over the weekend, the FL Holly trees really grow and basically are weeds.

Unless you were on another planet by now you know that Obama is president elect, time will tell how good a job he does.

Having a problem with my new MTH locomotive, it don't want to smoke anymore, it's an SD-45. Bought it from Roundhouse South in Ormand Beach FL, hate to take it back to them as it is a two hour drive or better each way, maybe I will call them later in the morning.

Doug - Don't be concerned, Yep, oil !  I do it all the time, the only problem I have is:

- Traction tires begin to slip, then spin, then expand, and finally come off.

- Track gets a "little" dirty, oil deposits seem to collect dust, which draws moisture, then begins to corrode, and I know exactly where to clean.

- Center rail becomes a little intermittent, but usually clears up when the pick-up rollers begin to slide a bit.  Usually I can tell before the cars derail by the lights flickering.

- Most of the non-derail features of the switches becomes a little over active.  The switches sometimes bounces back to a middle position.  Then not unusual for some of the trackside items to get moved around a little, typically being pushed aside by stock and engines pushing them after going over the top of the switch frogs.

- Indirect benefits are; I get to check out all the "safety" devices on the layout.  The circuit breakers, and red transformer light bulbs usually are exercised.

Oh, I forgot if you have any that smoke, and since you have turned the engines over to oil, them.  Don't forget to add smoke fluid, its best to do that AFTER you are finished with the oil.

And finally, if you want to do a really good job, don't forget to grease them either.

Good Mornin', Ya'll,

Voter turnout yesterday hit record proportions in my neck of the woods, was North of 80% with an hour to go last night with folks still pouring in, according to the poll workers I chatted with.

Re the MA ballot questions: the decriminalization (soon to be fineable misdemeanor) of less than one ounce of marijuana passed.  Greyhound racing in MA got whacked.  And the elimination of the State income tax of 5.25% was soundly defeated.  I am convinced that opponents of the elimination or reduction of the state income tax were behind the ballot question, figuring they would propose something that was not economically feasible that would get voted down.  Then down the road they could exclaim that the voters had already spoken on the issue.  If a sensible reduction had been proposed rather than all or none, the vote may have come out quite differently.  How did your ballot questions fare?

Technology failure did not bypass our local polling place.  The pencil sharpener broke.  Yes, we are still using paper ballots and #2 pencils.  Looked like the poll workers raided the local golf course and liberated their scorecard pencils.  I live in a smaller city Northeast of Boston with a population of 39,000 and with 6 Wards, 2 precincts in my ward.  There were 32 voting booths complete with pencils for just our 2 precincts, so there were no lines!  Wife and I were surprised that they told us no identification was required for voting; they just check off your name and address from a pre-printed list.  Wife asked me "What's to prevent someone from strolling in, give a street address, read my name upside down, and vote in my place?  And what do they do if the real me shows up with proper identification, only to have them tell me I already voted?  Then, since there is no link between the phony me and the ballot cast on my behalf, how do they negate that phony vote?  And would they then let the real me vote?"  Wife then got called out for walking out with the #2 pencil.  Told her it was time for a brewskie.

Chief.....I've had my posts dropped too, before the Forum revamp and after.  Has me sometimes using MS Word or an email draft to compose, then cut and paste (pain).  Thanks for the Trick or Treat cartoon, sent it to all my friends this morning.  Usually I don't forward jokes, but yours was too good to pass up. Thumbs Up  And correction.......it's "N'oreaster."  Must send you a Yank/Reb dictionary. Whistling  That's what I get up here when you and the FLA boys graciously forward your hurricanes our way and, though usually out to sea at that point, the edge of the storm does a 270 and pounds us with 50-70 mph winds and a few inches of rain.

Brutus......it is very thoughtful and responsible of you to warn your neighbors of vandalism, the weapons of choice used by the vandals, and the direction of the unfriendly fire, and the amount of damage.  Bet there a few local parents having second thoughts about what their younger ones were doing out and about with the BB rifle, pellet gun, and paintball gun they know is resident in their homes.  While the police may merely drop by and make out a report, it gives them something to think about for their allocating their patrols.  And if they do catch some perpetrators, they may be able to tie them back into your incident.  Told you in an earlier post some punks used my garage on the rear of my property as target practice with Chinese stars.  Also a burglary at my home (before the Dobemans).  The police subsequently caught 3 teens IN a house less than a 1/8th mile away when a vigilant neighbor saw them breaking and entering and phoned it in, police there in a flash.  One was the 16 year old son of a Chicago police officer, and the police found a bunch of stolen stuff stashed back at his garage, including my stuff.  Humiliating and sad for the parents.

DougM......despite the HD, I couldn't make you out at the Grant Park festivities last night.

DougDG.......I think I got your crud.  Actually, I know I got it from the little Granddaughter/Princess/Annointed One who was sick.  Had taken her out for ice cream and caught her "sharing" my root beer float back at the ranch.  By then I had been contaminated. Banged Head

MikeC......happy 30th anniversary!  Sounds like a perfect way to celebrate the day.  Did you also in reverse treat your wife to the gift of a train?  You could have treasured and protected it for her. Big Smile

Rich.......you must really be proud of your Mom, win, lose, or draw. Thumbs Up  Get your Harley back, or at least a diagnosis?  Bet it turns out to be something elementary.

Later, gang.

"Change"   is on the way to Ca. already.  We will now build new houses and/or condos for all chickens in Californey.  Every chicken will be entitled to:

"Standards for confining Farm Animals"  PASSED "Requires that chickens be allowed for the majority of every day, to fully extend their limbs or wings, lie down, stand up and turn around.  Limited exceptions apply."

This will certainly have grave financial effects!  We thought we had a problem regarding Illegal Immigration before!  We havn't seen anything yet!  With a HOUSE not just a Pot guaranteed for every chicken, I'm concerned that there will be a major migration from the other 49 states.  I am also concerned about the scope of this new requirement.  As many chickens are not accustomed to the ritual of "stretch, lie down, stand up, then turn around", I'm sure there will also be a requirement for Chicken trainers.  Which of course will draw a major influx of persons from NC and Tenn..  And that will require a stronger Grits basis being established here.

Ohhhh !    We're in trouble here!  Big TIME !  The Sky is Falling !   The Sky is Falling !

Don.....hope there was a provision for free health care for the chickens.  Many of the chickens will be in need of veterinary attention when they start pulling hamstrings, turning ankles, and running into things with all that newfound space.

Boy, what a beautiful day. Too bad Chicago can't be like this year-round. Walked down to the lake at lunchtime - easy to do with all the cross streets still closed.  Watched the South Shore and IC (Metra) Electric trains cross under Jackson Blvd. bridge on the way to Randolph station.

Worked on layout last night and the big MTH station is now in place.  Need to wire the lights and put in the sound system.

Don, Remember those recorder playback things we bought?

Just did a summary of our years marketing activities at work.  We have really been busy this last year adding clients and potential clients.  Only client dropped was Roseyville, NC.  which means no big Christmas gift for the Mayor.

At RDU, US Airways, Delta, United, Continental and American Airlines say all flights to CA are fully booked as Chickens are fleeing the big chicken houses of NC. Shock  Guess CA will now become the number one chicken producer in the USA.  They can't marry in CA as they are all hens.  Think I heard that San Francisco was thinking about filing suit to declare Proposition 8 unconstitutional.  Why is a City involved in this???  They need to stick to running their trolley cars.

Good afternoon

I hear it is nice out but we’ve been too busy for me to look outside!

DougM- After engines sitting for a while an quick lube smoke fluid fill sit drain fill (if like sitting for over a year) and an easy run on the test track till the amps come down, usually 2 – 3 minutes.

Don- the layout chickens are in compliance with the new regs.

May God bless

Jim
