Morning all. Drove into Chicago today - not for the faint-hearted - because I had to first drop my mom off at O'Hare.  Lotsa meetings today and then my class. Laz, condolences on the anniversary of your dad's passing - great that you continue to honor and remember him. I'm praying for a good death for my dad (who is in a nursing home).

Happy anniversary, Don!

There's a great article in today's Chicago Tribune that profiles the SMARTT 'Great Train Story' exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry. See if you can see it: http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/chi-museum-trains-1021oct21,0,1621416.story

Have a good day!

Good Mornin', Ya'll, from hazy NE Taxachusetts,

Overnight lows now in the low 30s but today's highs might approach 60 with hazy sunshine and storms on the way.  My annual resistance to using the furnace until as late as possible has passed.  Fall colors in full swing, but the weather forecasters warn that tonight/tomorrow's weather may extricate most of the leaves from the trees.  Still depressed over the demise of the Red Sox.  Tampa deserved it.  Off to battle Philly for the whole enchilada.  Wonder if the Rays will be able to handle the chilly Philly Fall nights.

Chief.....glad to hear Lucy is having a great time.  How's the leg coming along?

Don.....when you mentioned a 29th anniversary and going out to dinner with a bunch, you didn't mention whose 29th anniversary.  So just in case, happy anniversary! Thumbs Up

SPMan/Ray.....prayers for your train buddy.  Sorry to hear of your wife's scare.  Take her out to buy her some shoes to take her mind off of it.  It works with my wife, even in the event of an impending nuclear holocaust.  How's the eye coming along?  Back to crawling around under the layout soon?

JimPhish......while it is still some weeks off, congrats on your ordination.  A long hard journey with a happy and rewarding ending. Thumbs Up

Dennis.....I visited the web site Buckeye recommended for the Ohio Central restored steamers after I posted about the restoration of a steamer up in Conway NH.  Seems like the Ohio folks take steam preservation to the next level.

RT.......I think you deserve a significant train purchase after each anniversary of becoming a non-smoker.  Don't you agree? Cool  There's enough special occasions for the fairer sex with Valentines Day, their birthday, Sweetest day, anniversary, and Mother's day.  How does Train Day sound?

Chuck......you need a jacuzzi tub for that sore leg.  Glad you continue to make progress.  It won't be long now until it's train time again.  Thumbs Up

Laz......it's been 10 years for me too.  I think of my folks every day because something always comes up that reminds me how much they sacrificed for us kids and how much they taught us about values.

Fife......new wheels for the littlest princess?  Good move.  My wife and I were just chatting how dumb we were and how nice our cars have remained since the kids got their own.  Haven't had a transmission issue in the past 5 years.  Wonder if there is a connection. Whistling

DougM.....glad to hear your Mom is still jetting around.  Prayers for your Dad.  Thanks for my daily Chicago fix with the link you posted for the Chicago Tribune article and video on the 3,500 foot layout at the Museum of Science and Industry.  I miss the old  O gauge one, though.  That was super impressive too.  With the Chicago traffic, hope you get home by midnight. Thumbs Down

Sir James.....where on earth did you get that teeny tiny font?  Smaller than 8 which is the smallest selectable font on this site.

Brent......more car issues.  Sounds expensive.  Time to surprise SuzieQ with an M5.

Later, gang.

Jack

Howdy All !

Haven't been posting for awhile, grandson gave gramps & granny a vicious cold that had me laid up til yesterday. Had to breakdown and go see the docs, anti-biotics and a pretty drowsy cough suppressant. They seem to be helping quite a bit, went and got the flu shot while there. Granny nags me into going but will she go, nooooo. Banged Head

Bride’s laptop is broke.  It is a gateway M520 and the on off button will not work.  I found a site to show disassembly and get it apart but could not see physical damage to the button so going to find a replacement button.  The piece has been a tank.  First issue in five years.  Only issue is bride not able to access files.  This re-enforced what I tell her about keeping files on a separate media instead of on the hard drive.

One quick way to recover critical data from the laptop is to remove the 2.5 inch hard drive (via the little trap door on the back of the case) and connect it directly to a desktop computer using one of these inexpensive adapters. Then you can take your time with the on/off switch repair.

http://www.digitalintelligence.com/cart/ComputerForensicsProducts/2.5-Inch-Laptop-Hard-Drive-Adapter.html

EDIT:     If you’re willing to spend a little more money for added convenience, this adapter will plug directly into a USB port, so you don’t even need to open the case on the second computer.

Sir J, don't know what you are talking about???????????

Afternoon all.  Great meeting with developer.  Actually a lawyer by degree [not practicing anymore] who is front guy for a former Microsoft guy with very deeeep pockets.  I bought lunch [well the Town's CC did].  Now Town Board meeting tonight.

Came home to squirrels scolding in the pecan trees.  Got airrifle.  Went sneaking around for a shot and a big yellow cat ran by.  Was that tempting.  Been walking on my vehicles at night with muddy feet.  Must go.  Maybe I wil get buddy's live trap and put in cat food or sardines.  Will get them everytime.  Once cat left tree was full of squirrels leaving the trees and going home [not in my yard but several down].  Could not get a shot with rifle as running too fast.  Burg and Lucy were barking in the fence so that gave them a fright.

Shake and Bake, your phone is still busy [he's so sick].  YOU ARE NOT FOOLING ME.  Playing trains and do not want wife to know.

EDW,

This is great info.  Is the last one, the ID=0854 looks like the way to go.  So I would just take out the 2.5 HD out of the GAteway, plug it into this device, then plug into another computer via the USB and access the info?

Thanks again!!!

Oh, here's some new interesting happenings as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival - on Nov. 1, 2, and 8, 9 from 10 am to 10 pm, there is a free something called Train Time: A Sound Installation -in Millenium Park. "Evoking both Chicago's storied railroading past and its crucial central role in any of the country's future train solutions, Experimental Sound Studios and some local composers present a 'stunning' sound portrait incorporating the clank of wheels, hiss of boilers, roar of diesels, call of train whistles and whoosh of tomorrow's super-fast trains - a rhythmic reminder that today's downtown lakefront park was once a huge railyard extending to the water's edge."  There's also a new exhibit at the Chicago History Museum 'Burnham 2.0: A Composite Plan for the High Speed Rail City...with all sorts of fanciful designs.  I'll have to go and report back.

I bet we could lobby Hallmark for Train Day!  They seem to be behind the rest of these "days".

Or simply lobby the Sig-Other for train gifts on the exisiting Hallmark "Days".

Yes Jim, that’s all it takes. When you remove the drive from the laptop it will probably have a small clip covering the connection pins on the drive. You need to first pop off this clip in order to expose the pins so you can plug the drive into the USB adapter. (Look at the explanation given with the first link I provided). But I’m sure any adapter you get will have its own instructions regarding this step.

That ID 0854 adapter can be used with both SATA and IDE hard drives, but if your laptop is 5 years old it has an IDE drive. Be sure you plug it into the appropriate side of the adapter.

Once you plug the drive into the USB port of another computer, it should be recognized as an external drive, similar to plugging in a USB flash drive. You can then access the data.

In fact its actually bring a model train to work day and this year ( 8th year for this) It is Friday November ST. ( as per http://www.greatesthobby.com/ )So don't forget and get a train ready to bring to work I think I might take my 681 or 671RR actually might take one of my diesels I have as they would be easier to lug around and show.

Evening all,

Chief - What air rife do you have?  They do work go on varmits and without the noise which is a factor in the city!

EDW - Thanks for the info, I sent you an email about a similar device from Tiger Direct.

I can see Hallmark really cashing in on Train Day,  cards, more ornaments, maybe even AF ones, a made for TV movie  .  .  .

Did a lot of reading today, and finished one of the assignment papers.  Messed around with a junker 356 I got.  Not sure what I'll do with it as far a restoration yet.  It will be a good winter project.  Still more reading to do.

May God bless

Did you survive Biketoberfest?  Kinda quiet---hope you didn't end up at the Graybar Hotel Evil  I did get a nice ride in yesterday and came home and ran trains--that's a win win.  I'm looking forward to Saturday night and being done with 6 intense weeks of commitment.  The next time I retire..................

Good evening,

Just ran the new H10s around the track a couple of times with the sound turned down low and heard a few squeeks.  Guess it has been sitting around in the box for to long.  Have to give it a lube job.

Did I miss the York pic or didn't Brent post it yet?

It's cccccold in St. Louis - 52 outside and I think maybe 67 inside?  I had to turn off the AC earlier!  Someone left it running.

Okay - zuchini bread and banilla, sounds good to me!  Beacons on the screen all over the place, I'll be by to get you guys in just a few minutes.

Lost out on a couple Lionel cars on Ebay - I guess others wanted them more.  I was hoping to win one of the flying saucer pickup cars and an alien goo tanker car, but no luck.  Hmmm, maybe one day I'll catch one?

Laz - have any Old Mills for me?  I'm down to two Sammies!  Yoiks!

I don't see any font problems, must have been fixed earlier?

I replace the filters every month - use Merv 10 or 11 filters year round.  Seems we always have either the furnace or the AC running, sometimes both in the same day.  Prayers for all whose wives have asthma, btw - including me!

French Banilla!  Sounds good, does it have little pieces of banilla bean in it?

Good evening .......Just watched the new Lionel Nation #2.  Wow that Norm Charbonneau's layout is really something...He truly has a gift for scale and weathering. Enjoyable to watch....

I'm really starting to get fired up to dive into some more scenery on my layout.  I'm shooting to have the basic scenic shell complete for Christmas.  Who knows maybe Santa will help me out with a few additions.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 50s.  Work was absolutely horrible yesterday and the rest of the week does not look to get better.  Makes going to the dentist on Friday look like a relief.  All I did last night was eBay and Second Life and ride in the Tardis. That banilla is an acquired taste.   Man, I miss soccer already.  I had the usual fare on the dining car this morning.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana
