HOWDT TO ALL

A  beautiful day in lower Mich., Got the grass cut and was supprised at how thick it was. But it's down now and looking good. I was going through some 1981 MRs and I saw the prices of Lionel steam engines was much higher than I  remember. I guess things have not changed all that much after all. Of course in 1981 Lionel was the only real train in town and demand was good. Williams first GG1 came in kit form with two motors but no reverse unit it came with a diode for forward only and instructions for installing a Lionel E-unit.Introductory price $149.50.

Brutus, fire it up and lets go.....S.J.

Good evening all!  It was a long day, but got things done.  Wife had to take care of some of my to do list.  Got home to find a package from ChooChoo with two K-Line die cast hoppers.  Then, after bride left for a errand, I got another package from The Train-station.... a "Happy Father's Day" box car from Lionel.

Jack, not sure, but the good book says "The prayers of a righteous man availeth much".  I pray about most things, and so far, I have not shocked myself into oblivion.  Of course, I have made enough mistakes in life to have learned a lesson or two along the way.

Tonight, we made a treck to Waffle house for dinner.  I know, not the most gourmet meal to cross my pallet, but it was tasty and quick.  Did some shopping with SWMBO and got things ready for the inlaw visit this weekend.  I have to interview a candidate for the positon we have open.  Got another one on Monday.  HOpe one of these works out and I get some relief soon.

Chief, hope that you get some time to actually relax and enjoy the retreat.

God Bless,
dennis

ALCS Game 1 Final: Boston Red Sox 2  Tampa Bay Rays 0

Hockey in Beantown?  Not quite yet, Buckeye.  Behind the Sox, Patriots, and the Celtics, the Bruins are a forgotten team.

Brutus......I guess the old projector at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago had seen better days.  The Sky show is indeed projected onto the ceiling for those thinking of going to Chicago.  Theater in the round.  While it's been a few since I was there last, Chief would love the reclinerizer-type seats, perfect for viewing up, like laying out on a lawn chair at night and taking in the stars.  Astronomy....educational for all and kid friendly.  Parking is decent.  And once you park the car, you have your choice of 7 venues within walking distance: the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, Soldier Field (Da Bears), Grant Park, Northerly Island Park, and the 12th Street Beach.

Right on the shores of Lake Michigan, so it's worth it to take in a long walk and view the harbor too where Chief could keep one of his boats.

Jack Big Smile [:D]

What you are looking at:

View is of downtown Chicago from the Southeast over Lake Michigan looking Northwest and inland.

Runway pictured (3,900 feet) is the former Meigs Field with 4 heliports.  The airport closed in 2003 (allegedly posed a terrorit threat) and the land has reverted back to its namesake, Northerly Island Park.  The Park now includes the 12th Street Beach and I think one heliport.

If you draw a horizontal line across the center of the picture: Adler Planetarium extreme right at the end of the peninsula.  The Shedd Aquarium is the white structure center slightly right.  The Field Museaum center slightly left.  Soldier Field to the left of center, that bowl looking thingy.  Behind the Field Museum looking Northwest is Grant Park.

The three tallest 3 buildings in the picture left to right: the Sears Tower, the Standard Oil Building, and the John Hancock Tower.  In terms of height, Sears followed by Hancock and then Standard Oil.

Sorry if I am carrying on about this, but I grew up in Chicago.  Although I had no money early on, I always had somewhere interesting (and cheap) to take a date or my nieces and nephews.  Then it was off to Pizzeria Uno's (the real one with true Chicago style deep dish, not the crud you get at the chain) or Due's (Uno's twin a block North) for pizza and brewskies.

Those who have never had the chance to go to Chicago.....it is unlike any other waterfront city in that, except for that strip of skyscrapers (top right) the lakefront has been virtually saved for the public's use.

A City done right.  A continuous run of public venues:  beaches, parks, Lincoln Park Zoo, a golf course, a crew venue, continuous cinder and asphalt walking and riding paths (cement through the downtown area).  The Lincoln Park Gun Club (skeet and trap) sadly closed.  McCormack Place.  All accessible by car or public transit.  And if a picnic on a beach or in a lakefront park watching an air show is your cup of tea, Chicago has it.  Don't forget Wrigley Field and the Cubbies, farther North, not too far from the lakefront.

Something for toy/model Trainiacs too.  If the Museum and Science and Industy's 3,500 ft. Great Train Story HO layout doesnt float your boat, the Chicagoland Lionel Railroad Club's O gauge will.  http://www.msichicago.org/whats-here/exhibits/the-great-train-story/  and http://www.clrctrains.com/index_user.asp

While Mr. McCain may have taken issue with Mr. Obama's support of the $3 million in Federal tax dollars for the Adler Planetarium, the money works in an educational capacity virtually 365 for the people, local and tourist.  DougM......is Chicago still in the running for the 2016 Olympics?

Morning!

Glad Jack had his camera last night as we tardised around the windy city!  Chicago always has something to do and it's always busy.  Especially around the waterfront.  People are out and about biking, walking, skating, and playing volleyball on the beach on the weekends!

Don't forget the carnival rdes on Navy Pier.

Garage painting today.

Morning all. Beautiful day here. Back from my men's group at church. We picked up a few more guys, and a book to study together for the next few months. Had a weird date last evening - went out to a decent Mexican restaurant with a couple celebrating their anniversary (so the bride made cheapskate me pick up the tab...) but had to take the six-year-old with us as both teens abscounded unexpectedly. His presence was amusing.

Jack is right. Chicago is marvelous.Let me know if you ever visit. I feel fortunate to work a block from the Art Institute. At lunch yesterday wandered up to Millenium Park to visit a Wired/Next exhibition full of plug-in Priuses, human powered cars, personal transporters which look like super-sized enclosed wheelchairs, reusuable paper (the ink disappears in 24 hrs). Solid resin ink cartridges (nothing to throw out), weird virtual reality stuff, all sorts of robots - including one that looked like a sheep and cut the grass automatically.

The Zeiss projector at the Adler planetarium is just that - it shows the sky show and is a very sophisticated piece of equipment - not an overhead projector - mind you, the Adler should be fundraising not for most but all of it imho, but I don't like the disengenuous-ness.  Speaking of which, that was a good game last night in the ALCS.

Hope to see the Fireproof movie tonight. Working at church tomorrow. Have to lug scenery over to the church too for the bride's drama rehearsal. Hmmm, that means I have to take the seats out of the van - not fun.

Celebrate with me - I think the middle boy has raised his math grade to D - an earthshaking achievement...

GOOD MORNING ALL

Gee the pot is "windy" this morning. I am happy to say we have bright sun and afternoon temps in the 70s thru Tuesday. Then down we go again. Got my chores done yesterday so high noon means football, hopefully good football, although anything is better than the Det. Lions. I still have a tall stack(s) of MR & RMC to look  at and then give away, I'm thinnin the herd.

Have a great weekend........S.J.

Jack,

The acquisition of the projector, at least to me, is not that big a deal. My questions are more like the "Chicken or the Egg", which came first. The earmark for the planetarium or the planetarium director's $200k commitment to Obama's campaign. I find the "Earmark" procedure to be nothing more than a form of "legal bribery".

I believe the earmark request to replace the Zeiss projection system was also supported by three Republican congressmen from the Chicago area, however, the earmark was not approved, and museum never did receive the requested funds.

Afternoon all!

Some very nice days and evenings continue here. Had a very cool breeze for the HS football game last night. Should have taken a sweatshirt (who would of thought of that in steamy N Texas?).

Doug - a "D" - Hip Hip Hooray! I know where you are coming from on that one. My son has done a 180 or he has hacked into the school computer grades system. He had all B's and a couple of A's the first 6 weeks. As Doug and I know - that can change in an instant - he has already lost a critical Biology assignment - missed turning it in.

Dennis - Waffle House - Yum!

Jack - the only way that projector would work for the Chief if he is in a recliner is if it projects onto the back side of his eyelids.

Looking forward to meeting Buckeye and Wes at York next week!

Regards, Roy

Laugh [(-D]  Good one, Roy!

Well, I heard the interview with the guy from the planetarium on the radio last night on the way home from work and it at least sounded like the money was now on the way?  Apparently the doohickey that draws/projects Jupiter is nonfunctional etc.  Where the heck would someone come up with $200 Mill but not be able to cough up 10 instead?  That doesn't seem to make sense?  Not that that has anything to do with the current election.  I still can't figure out how we ended up with these limited choices in the first place.

Email is scewed up again - it was messed up last night and today it just keeps downloading one email over and over again.  I think it's my provider.

Tried to hook up a TIU in the LTS today, it's having "Check Track" issues, boss says he'll play with it during the week

Hey Buckeye...The new campaign started last night, as you oberserved.  GO DEVILS!! 1 for one now and tonight -- The PENGUINS!!!  NHL Free Preview this week!! YEAH!!!

RT - I ran full system checks and no malware on my computer.  Checked email with another computer online with same results, so it's our provider's system?

DougDG - sorry, I misread your email earlier, 200K for 3 million.

Nothing going on, can't do emails and we rented Speed Racer and Baby Mama.  Working on some plans....

Finally got through to my account online and deleted everything, so any emails that were sent to me today did not come through, sorry guys.

GOOD EVENING ALL

I forgot again.  Brutus forget the E-mails, will the Tardis start?

A very good football day, Every team I wanted to win did. Watched the games and thumbed old MR mags. I am planning to take some to the TTOS show tomorrow and give them away. I usually take a dozen at a time so they are taken and not thrown out. As others bring mags. as well. some are from different train clubs so sometimes I find something to bring home and then take back the next show. Have a good sunday and Brutus good luck with the e-mail...S.J.

Another beautiful day in Ohio. 82 degrees. Sunny. Cooling off now, to about 60.

Just watching the Nascar race from Lowe's Speedway in a remote place called NC. Looks like a good race.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.  I love global warming and falling gas prices.  I reffed two youth games and watched most of a third one today.  All three were good games.  My wife and watched "10,000 B.C." on a library DVD last night and "Numb3rs".  The movie was ok, and the TV was good.  Going down to IU for a reception for Lucas on one of his scholarship awards.  Going to spend Sunday night with the wife at the Red Bud Inn in Nashville.  RI52, you are so right about the shirt.  It is priceless.  I had a little extra on the dining car this morning for breakfast.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Evening from beautiful Southern Ohio

Gorgeous weather today.  Finished up one class today with a presentation on the prophet Zachariah.  One more Moral Theology class, two finals and I'm done!!!!!  Ordination in 7 weeks!  Got home from class washed up the car and changed to oil before going on a trip tomorrow, washed the dog and had the last piece of tomato pie with a Molson.

Jim F. - Starting in a closet is a good idea.  Many thin coats is the trick and recognizing when to stop messing with the mud is the trick.  Not to belabor the obvious, a 10" and 12 knife has a bow in the blade to taper the mud as you apply it.  My coats are a max of an ⅛" thick.

Fife- It sounds like you have some interesting plans going on.  The sceanary should be beautiful if you get a chance you may want to check it out.  My bride and I are heading to Crossville Tennessee after church for a few days.  I guess they have a hot tub.

Chuck - Take it easy.   Have you been to the doctor for you leg?

DougM- Hope to post something special for you in SPF

May God bless

Good evening.  Today worked out better than I expected.  Caught up with the candidate for the position here.  Good prospect, but we have another on Monday.  We will see.  Then, shortly after my return home, bride's family arrived.  We took all the kids to a pumpkin patch that was really nice.  They had a bluegrass band, a corn cannon, and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained.

Tonight, we had some fun with the Wii Fit.  Wife, sister in law, kids, brother in law all tried the different games.  Brother in law challenged me to the "ski Jump", I got on, first attempt I score 260 and hand the remote back to him......none came close.

Showed the crowd the "Making of Fireproof" that I had on the DVR.  Will probably get them to the movie soon.

Doug, hope you enjoyed the movie.  Let me know what you think.

God Bless,

Dennis

Good mornin', ya'll,

Spent a perfect day at the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield MA. with granddaughter, daughter, wifey, and SIL.  Not many of these sunny 70 degree days left.  The Fair had its beginnings in 1818 and has been operating every year since with the exception of 3 years during the Civil War and another 3 during WWII, closed by government decree both times.  At 190 years, the Fair is billed as the oldest continuously running agricultural fair in the U.S.

This year's winning pumpkin weighed in at 1,464 pounds.  The MA State Police K9 unit put on quite a show and spent a lot of time after their demonstration taking questions from the packed audience.  Clydesdales.  Watched chickens hatch w. granddaughter, kind of like watching Brutus' mud dry, but the little one was fascinated when the chicks made their entrance and the incubator went from about 100 eggs to chick chaos. The bee and ant exhibit was fascinating, amusing to see the fairer sex horrorified and grossed out (wife will probably have nightmares).  Quite an array of livestock displays, including a calf petting venue.  Separate petting zoo.  Wifey skipped the elephant ride this year and did the camels with granddaughter.  Pony rides.  Border collie (herding) show.  One building dedicated to time/labor saving devices.  Another for plants and flowers.  Birds of prey building--live owls, hawks, and eagles out the ying yang, a couple of which were taken outside and turned loose for a separate show.....must have been homing hawks because they didn't fly away, came when called, and didn't try to eat the audience either. Carnival/amusement park section.  And more food (and variety) than even Chief could handle.  Too much more to mention.  Granddaughter made it to the car and passed out before we made it out of the parking lot at 8:15pm.

Dennis.....didn't see anything on harvesting veins at the agricultural fair. Whistling [:-^]

Kurt.....good catch.  Navy pier is off the picture to the right.

Fife.....emoticon is missing the sharp suit you wore in one of the pics. Cool [8D] Cool [8D] Cool [8D]  Cool [8D]

DougDG, DougM, and edw.....I share your opinions about earmarks and tax breaks/extenders.  Sad state of affairs when the enemy is at the gates and these Washington politcos can't pass the Emergency Economic Stabilization Bill without the 14% added in tax breaks/extenders (Carribean rum industry, toys, and Nascar tracks to name 3). Banged Head [banghead] Sad [:(]  If our predecessor politicians took this approach to a declaration of war after Pearl Harbor, we'd all be bilingual.  And English wouldn't be one of the languages.  Somehow the Zeiss projector doesn't seem as wasteful.  You all read my earlier post, so you know my feelings about the presidential candidates and the upcoming election.  Chief is looking better by the day. Though I'd vote for Jon if he threw an F3 or Berk my way. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Rich.... did you ever fill us in on what was wrong with the Harley in the first place?  You seem to have been slightly distracted by the chicks on bikes and forgot to tell us.  Must be your diversity shining through. Whistling [:-^]

Off to bed!  RED SOX LOST IN EXTRA INNINGS TO TAMPA. LEE, RICH, MEL, AND THE REST OF THE FLORIDA BOYS DON'T DESERVE IT.

Hi GYZ,

A Good Sunday Morning to All

I went to bed around ten last nite, heard some noises but went to sleep anyway. This morning a whole heap of my banilla is missing and a few crumbs is all thats left of the cupcakes. Ha but they did not find the fresh batch of choc. chip cookies though.

Sunny this morning 40s/70s today, I am waiting for my friend to come by as we are going to our first train show of the fall season. I really don't have anything on my want list but one never knows what might show up. I'll let you  know this evening. Have a good Sunday...S.J.
