....If the sun is not hidden this afternoon, this is going to be a hot one....It's already 73 and before 8 am. Still bone dry, but better mow today as it's been 5 days since I mowed.
Quentin
Zardoz, thanks for opening the Diner this morning! I was sleeping in, hoping that when I woke up, my sinus headache would be gone. So far, I think it has. Just hope it doesn't decide to make another appearance, later on.
Coffee, hot tea, lemonade, juice are ready for consumption. On the breakfast bar, you'll find turkey bacon, sausage, biscuits, toast, and there's some boxes of cereal on the counter.
Does anyone have any requests for lunch and/or supper later on? If so, let me know, and I'll try my best to comply with any and all requests.
Everyone have a good morning!!
E - Letters to the diner:
Brian - glad Joanie is home and sounds like she is doing ok. Thoughts still hold on giving her your boots - just for a few days....
Tree - I like your engine! Not sure I can continue after that!
Ed - our landlord is missing due to long holiday and our grass needs mowing. Could you catch that later this afternoon - hmmmmm?
Willy - have a great trip! You will have so much fun and what a great experience! The Big Apple!
Jay - thanx for cake.....I did find it - but only through the map you left me to get there.
Dan - Maybe that railing needed fixing and no way to attach something to it to indicate that? Well - maybe? Since I can't come up with anything plausible.
MC - I am going to attack you behind the scenes, so get out the asparagus!
Zardoz! Nice to see you in the diner! Saw your footprints in and out!
CW - I took a Benedryl just before bed and almost slept in the hallway. They really put me under - fast! But my sniffies are gone this morning. Also had a really hard rain this morning for about 10 min. Just enough to keep from having to water the lawn that Ed is going to mow for us......
Let's see - juice, COFFEE, sausage patties, COFFEE, whole wheat toast, COFFEE, chocolate cake, COFFEE, glass of milk, mmmmm....best put on a bib for all that!
Moo...
WAKE UP!
Time for breakfast.
Gee, usually I do not have to open the diner in the morning...must be the summer heat is making everyone a bit sleepy...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
.....Ed, I was wondering the same thing on the other one you mentioned....I simply had a senior moment and couldn't think of the name....AntiGates....

Brian,
All the bayous are cresting, some over their banks...all the creeks are now small rivers, the San Bernard will top out 4 feet over flood stage...the San Jacinto river is already 2 feet over flood stage...typical sumer thunderstorm stuff when you live in a swamp!
You learn to mow the grass inbetween the showers, at least twice a week, or it will get away from you.
Hope it all works out for your lady and her knee...been there, done that and have the screws and rods to show for it!
Larry - Nice photo. That's a sharp looking locomotive!
Not much happening here this evening. It looks like the rain is going to do its very best to avoid us both tonight and tomorrow. It's going to be west of us tonight along a stalled cold front. The front will begin moving tomorrow, but will probably move through Omaha during the late morning or early afternoon which is when there is usually the least instability and thus the fewest storms. Storms will then redevelop just east of us in western Iowa. However, the computer models have been having problems figuring this system out, so I'm going to keep a close eye on things.
On Friday, at 4:00 AM, I'm going to leave for New York City with my mom for a drama trip. About 25 kids from the drama department at school are going, along with five chaperones and the drama teacher. The group is going to see several Broadway performances and do some sightseeing. We'll head back to Omaha Monday evening. In case you're wondering, my dad is going to stay home and do some work that needs to be done (poor dad!).
Lots to look forward to over the next week!
EDIT: Brian, glad the operation went well!
Willy
Hey all, we're back home and I'm starving. Any leftovers from supper?
The operation went well. Joanie's busy filling everyone in via phone- the doc said that her arthritis/torn cartilage was alittle more extensive than he thought. Maybe he'll re-think a future knee replacement.
Nice picture, Larry!

Looks like a neat gig. If I ever get out that way I'm definately gonna stop in.
On a RR related note (In here? What!) I saw a tank car today being switched in Neenah, WI by the CN. There was spray painted lettering on one side of a railing that read DEFECT CARD. What's that for?

But of course! Not having a good PA gave me fits, but that just meant I got to talk to the passengers a little more. The down side is that I can only tell so many people about a given scenic high point.
The toughest part is the 'sea legs,' especially this early in the season. Even the passengers ask how we do it....
From Sunday:
On the steps, student conductor 'Dusty'.
On the ground, yours truly, conductor Melanie, Trainman (for the day, also a conductor) Don Jr, Engineer/Trainmaster Chuck.
Behind us, NYC RS-3 8223, our usual power.

Quentin, I thought someone had been missing! Wonder what's happened to Old Timer. Maybe if he's lurking around, he'll read this, and say "Hello" to everyone.
Supper tonight: sub sandwiches with turkey, lettuce, onion, cheese and tomatoes; and subs with roast, lettuce, tomatoes, onion. There are bags of chips on the counter to have along with your subs.
Joe and Lance, there are subs made up for you two to take to work tonight.
At least when he explains that the hospital "beat-up" Joanie, she can sorta hide the crutches.
How's tin-feet's bedside manners class coming?
(Boss Hen can start driving again, as of today - no more getting whacked with the white stick!)
ps - Mooks, got the job between Alliance and Ravenna....your side trips not taking you out to the great Nebrasky panhandle I hope!? (some of that work FM can't see for fear that it would jeopardize his slant on things)
blhanel wrote:A burger sounds good right now- especially from the diner, since I can't create any food odors here at home. Joanie is fasting in preparation for her orthoscopic knee surgery this afternoon.
We had 64 people come for Produce today. And all we had was individual Idaho baking potatoes, large bags of salad mix and orange juice. Heard people saying they'd like to see them bring in some good tomatoes, along with the 5# bags of presliced onions.
Larry, glad to hear you had a great time on the railroad over the weekend. Know you enjoyed every minute of it, didn't you?
On the lunch menu today: BLTs w/fries and tossed salad. Or, you can have some grilled burgers w/lettuce, tomato and mayo (or Kraft Miracle Whip Salad Dressing).
I'm gonna go and see if I can find something to knock this sinus headache. It's about to give me fits.
Got a couple of branches dragging this morning.
Six trips on the Railroad - 20 miles each trip, most of it standing. Talk about "getting your sea legs..." Then there's that two hour commute to get there and home, not to mention cleaning the train at the end of the day.
But I wouldn't miss it for anything. We finally got the PA working properly on Monday, which saved a lot of 'on the spot' narration. Once we get the tickets collected I usually just stand in a vestibule with the mike (so I can tell where we are) and do my talk from there.
Bearclaw and some tea and time to move my office back to its usual location, now that the new furniture is in place.

Good Tuesday morning, all. Man, yesterday was such a good day. In between everything Iwas fixing for our cookout, I did a lot of reflecting, remembering and praying for our current military personnel, and all the ones who have gone before.
Looks like with all the chocolate yesterday, no one got too out of control in here last night. Everything is "neat as a pin" as the old saying goes.
Brian, I'm glad you enjoyed your birthday!!
Coffee is on, fresh juices made, and there's a light breakfast of cold cereal on the breakfast bar. Now it's time for me to get ready for the greedy ones at Tuesday Produce. Some of those people are worse than two and three year old children, trying to get what they can, before someone else beats them to it.
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all later.
