As promised - nothing special, aside from the fact that it was, in fact, on time....

Utica Union Station.  Notice the numerous railfans on the bridge, watching the action....

I think this was 283...  Didn't write it down.

Morning All,

I'm just going to grab a quick coffee and then I have to head out and start shoveling another 4 or 5 inches of the white stuff that was supposed to head south and hit Albuquerque. One of these days (if it ever warms up), I need to wash the cruiser, too. I can't remember what color she is under all the Ice Slicer/Mag-Chloride/Who-Knows-What on her. I think I had better dig out the primer I wrote on winter driving a couple years ago, too. Despite a constant supply of snow this year, it seems there are still some that haven't figured out how to drive in it yet.

Oh well, I'll be in later. Hope you all have a great day!

I think a lot has to do with what people are aware of.  True seizures by people known to suffer from any seizure disorder are actually rare - most folk have their situation well in hand.  There are some who are not very disciplined in keeping up with their treatment, and those whose condition is very volatile (the dose that works one day doesn't another), but they are in the minority.

There are other causes of seizures.  Little ones can have a febrile seizure - usually when they have a sudden onset high grade (104-105) fever.

Seizure can be a symptom/result of a stroke - which, along with heart attacks, is a growing problem.

Sometimes people report that a loved one is having a seizure because they don't know what else to call the situation.

Then there are the petit mal seizures.  You may be right next to someone having one and not even realize it, as many times they simply seem to "zone out."  I read about a group of high school kids who became aware that one of their number suffered petit mal seizures.  They would occasionally scatter when they realized she was having one, leaving her alone, with the sensation one gets when you see a home movie where someone suddenly disappears...

The two calls I ran the other morning were a difficulty breathing and a chest pain.  In the end, it appears that both may well have been related to the bug that's been going around here.  In both cases, any difficulty breathing was secondary to the pain in their lower chest/upper abdomen - it hurt to take a deep breath.  That would be as opposed to someone who has a true lung problem such as asthma or emphysema.

And on the weather front - Son called yesterday while I was away at the Train Show.  Said his area was in the teeth of a terrible blizzard.  So far they had about an inch of snow.  Confused [%-)]

Of course, those familiar with the National Capital Region will know that an inch of snow is a big deal there....

We have a few inches at my place.  On my way to the train show I passed through the snow belt, where a lot of very happy snowmobilers were out enjoying their avocation.

Good Monday morning, everyone!  Well, apparently I slept very, very good last night:  I didn't even wake up until 7:20.

Dan, thank you for making the coffee, fixing fresh juice, and breakfast.

Emmar, glad to see you drop by, please come in whenever you can.

Everyone have a great day, and I'll see you in a bit, when my eyes are more awake than they are currently.Sleepy [|)]

Amtrak arriving in Utica today, with snow on the ground.  Of the Amtraks due in while I was there (Toy Train Collectors show), it was the only one on time (the other two were two hours late).

I'll upload it tomorrow for your edification....

LC, I've made myself a note of your request of tacos, black beans and rice for tomorrow.  Now, do you want that for lunch or supper tomorrow?!?!

Nightrain, hope your heartburn is easing up, and also hope you feel better tomorrow.

CW, you have outdone yourself again.  It all looks so good, I'm not even sure what to get.  Think I'll settle for the roast with mashed taters and creamed corn.  And some cole slaw.  And the cherry cheesecake.

If I was still living in Flagstaff AZ, I would love to go out there and take some pics of some trains in the snow. It snowed there this past week, and I sort of miss it.

I had it easy cause my mom lives by the train tracks.

Here in FL, it's kind of muggy, but in the mid 70's. Not very winterlike around here I am afraid

If you like snow and like to photograph trains in it, you could move to South Dakota. We have roughly three inches of fresh snow on the ground here in Sioux Falls.

Currently, South Dakota does not have much to offer when it comes to watching trains. Sioux Falls was once served by five different railroads; Chicago & Northwestern, Great Northern, Illinois Central, Milwaukee Road and the Rock Island, but we were never on the mainline of any of these roads. The BNSF operates in and out of Sioux Falls, and we have a shortline here known as the "Ellis & Eastern", it is owned by Concrete Materials and operates between Sioux Falls and Corson, South Dakota. The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern is also headquartered here, and if they ever get going with their track expansion & rehabilitation project, youwould end up seing a lot more traffic on the D, M & E.

If you've never been to the Black Hills of South Dakota, we have the Black Hills Central, which operates during the spring and summer months between Hill City and Keystone, and.................The Deadwood, Black Hills & Western Railroad is supposed to begin operations for the first time this year, by about the middle of July..........and the Deadwood, Black Hills & Western is a whole 'nother story that I will get into later, if I am asked to.

I'm happy anyway. I measured 8.5 inches of new snow at my house and most areas across Omaha have measured anywhere from 6 to 9 inches of snow. It's pretty rare that a snowstorm actually turns out heavier than predicted.

Two or three months ago, you posted the snowfall prognostications of a couple of forecasters, plus you included your own.  How are things shaping up?  Who has been the better forecaster so far?

And don't you dare turn off that weather machine.  Randy was just teasing you.  My goodness, just think of how blase "weather" would be if it were the same every single day.  Captain [4:-)]

So far none of the predictions have ended up perfect, but mine is a little closer than the other forecasters'. I expected we would get our first measurable snowfall by the end of November and that did not come true. The other forecasters were expecting 2 inches in November.

I expected 2 inches of snow in December while one of our local forecasters said 1.5 inches and the other said much above average. It ended up snowing about 3 inches so I was closest to being right.

For January, I was expecting 3 or 4 inches while one local forecaster said 3 inches and the other said normal snowfall. We were all way off on that one as January snowfall has been about 8 inches at our official reporting station and over 10 inches at my house. Overall, none of these predictions have been even close to subperb, but I'm holding my own.

I expect February to be an average month for snowfall and March to be above average. That is pretty much in line with everyone else, so we will see how things turn out.

And since the weather machine seems to have gained some popularity, I will not be shutting it off. Sorry Mudchicken!

// Staggers in....

Got in this morning from my little errand back east (I-76 to I-80 to I-74 to I-70,  Great Plains Circle Route). Drove through a ground blizzard this morning on I-70 from Kansas all the way to Denver. Drove all night to avoid being trapped out on the prairie. Got four hours sleep since I got home and going back for a few more before I start shovelling the 6-8 inches that have fallen so far here.

Randy, whilst you are re-arranging the woodshed with DF( or are at least out behind it with him), I'm tempted to pull out the 16 Lb. "circuit breaker" and get in a few swings at Mr. Weather Machine before Willy returns.
