Well, it's nice to see that Ed is around this morning! You should drop by more often, Ed.

I hope Bob (not spokyone, but the other Bob) gets better soon. I always to hate to hear of somone being in the hospital.

Speaking of illness, we've got some interesting stuff going around Omaha. A lot of kids are coming down with the flu. One girl came down with the flu, and then it attacked her muscles and killed her and now more kids are showing those symptoms. There is also salmonella going around. Believe it or not, it is being spread by Peter Pan Peanut Butter, so now there is a ton of peanut butter being recalled. It's wild and crazy out there!

More snow today. It's not going to be much, but 1 to 3 inches is possible. A real big warming trend will start this weekend. Sometime next week, we could make it all the way to 50 degrees.

I hope everyone has a great Friday, and remember, TGIF!

.....1 degree in our part of the world {right now}, this morning but with bright sunshine.

On crossing gates question above:  Not too many years ago..{maybe 20}, I can remember on one of the Nickle Plate route crossings here in Muncie there was a small crossing guard shack and as a train approached the guard would walk out to the center of the street with his RR lantern and guard the crossing as the train approached.

Of course that same crossing now {NS system}, has automatic crossing gates and lights.  It is what we call the Frankfort line out of Muncie.

Can't give any dates of the automatic crossing lights, etc....but they certainly have been here {in many locations of the country}, for many, many decades.  At least back into early 30's....

Houston Ed....Did you get the snow pic. I sent.....?

Duff,

Has been so far,

Three daughters later, I don't think I would change much, even if I could.

Six years apart, 7, 13 and one just turned 20...they keep life interesting, to say the least.

Everyone will have tons of advice for you when your daughter gets here...

So all I will add is to do what your heart tells you to, even if it doesn't jibe with all the books and stuff.

And remember, touch is the best way to communicate with your kid...hug ‘em, kiss ‘em , hold their hand every chance you get, because it goes by so fast, you end up wishing you had more time to just hold them.

Good Friday morning to one and all! Emmar, have a safe trip this weekend.  You too, Joe and Matt!  Want to see everyoneone back in here next week.

Bob, thanks for making breakfast this morning.  And Ray, thanks for making the juice.  Bob's menu sounds so good this morning, don't think I'll add anything to it.

I got a phone call from Nance69 last night.  Bob is in the hospital in Tucson.  Don't know a whole lot yet, except that he has a raging bladder infection, and they were still doing tests on him, when she called me.  When I find out more, I'll be sure to let you all know.   Just thought you'd like to know what I know, so far.

Our temp right now, is at 9 degrees.  I think we're supposed to get up to the mid to upper 20s today, then in the mid 30s tomorrow and Sunday.

Everyone have a great morning, and take care.

Tamales, really beefy chili and fried rice, flour tortillas with sliced avocados...and anything hot you can think of...all the way down to 27 in Houston...gators in sweaters and possums in boots, who would'a thunk it...

Night train, your life is about to get turned upside down, inside out and backwards...and it's the greatest thing in the world.

You guys can keep all the snow up there if you would, can't sit out on the porch if the white stuff shows up!Cool [8D]

WoW!  It's a balmy  - - - Ten Degrees - - - this morning.  Sunny, too.  Kinda nice.  I think the lake effect machine is kicking up down south, but that's another story.

Tina - I actually think that gates predate any sort of lighted/mechanical warning devices.  I've seen pictures of manned crossing shelters that had bells on them.  Assuming that the crossing guards used lanterns at night, the answer to your question would likely be kerosene or other lamp oil.

I can't speak to when the first "automatic" crossing signals came to be.  It's been my impression that the "wig wag" undoubtedly predates any version of the lights we know today.

Thanks for getting breakfast started, Spokeyone. I'll mix up a fresh batch of orange juice, and I will make a fresh pot of coffee while I am here. The hot chocolate is out on the counter and ready to go. We will let CW add whatever she wants to the menu this morning for breakfast.

While I am not sure of what our current temperature is here in Sioux Falls, I know that it is supposed to warm up to about 25 degrees this afternoon. That is going to seem like a heat wave to a lot of people in my neck-of-the-woods, considering what it has been like here for the last several days. I have yet to find out if we are in for another severe cold snap. I hope not, but I reckon I'll just have to take it as it comes.

The diced potatoes are par boiling for my home-made hashbrowns. I fix 'em with finely chopped red and green bell peppers and onions. I also have the sausage started for the gravy. While the taters are cooling, I'll finish drinking my coffee. Then will get the scrambled eggs, bacon and biscuits going. Then I will fry up the portions of hashbrowns as everyone comes in.

#####  SPLAT......who??? - Randy!  Why are you lying on the floor!  I nearly broke a nail tripping over you.

Must put fur back in place now!  Tongue [:P]

Also must practice my new whine - Willy!  It is so hot and humid.  When are you going to send some cooler air.  When will we get rain?  Willy!!!!

(Sound ok?)

Tina - good question.  I will hazard a guess that signals didn't come into play until well into the electric generation.  Telegraphers used "the wire" and it wouldn't be a big leap to other things like signals and crossing lights.

Big90Mac - it is just a smidge east of Elk City.  South of Clinton and North of Hobart.  Based at Clinton-Shermon AFB.  Great small town!

Off to find Joe - seems we need a little work done on our squeaky garden door!  And where is Da Mutt?  He hasn't been in lately.  If he is digging in the garden again.....dang dawg!  Leave that to the pro!

"You're the reason God made Oklahoma, and I'm still missing you."

Welcome, Big90Mack. I am not familiar with Canadian, Texas, but I use to drive through OK all the time on the way to Texas to visit family.

Somebody's expecting a caboose? It's not catching is it? Congrats! Been there, done that, wonderful experience and it lasts a lifetime.

Trees, I have been looking at your snow pictures. I love snow. No snow here, just rain.

Here at the house we've been discussing train crossings and its got me curious. A quick search online and using this forum's search mechanism hasn't revealed what I am looking for. Here's my question. When did flashing red lights first get used at railroad crossings? Granted, after the invention of the light bulb, but were the first crossing lights electrical or gas powered? And of course, the next question to follow that would have to be when did arms that lower first appear. I do know that crossbucks have been around for a long long time. (I also remember being in RR dispatch class and asking what a crossbuck was just to turn and look at my fellow classmates and each and every one of them had their arms crossed over their chests. It was funny, but truly weird.)

Thank you CShaveRR for the congrats, So far I am doing well with her, she only gives me heartburn

I'll have a dish of lo mein, some fried rice, and some oolong tea...

Guess what? According to the weather, it probably might SNOW here in Florida!, wow...I haven't seen that since I left Flagstaff.  We had to go outside and cover up the wellhead, since there is a freeze warning out tonight. It might snow, but it will probably melt off as soon as it hits the ground. We will see what it brings by tomorrow morning.

Big 90 Mack, Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forums and the DD/CS!  Always glad to see new faces in here.  Hope you come back often.  Your supper tonight, is on me (meaning I'll take care of your tab, not that I'll be wearing the food).   Speaking of which, on the supper menu tonight:  it is Chinese night.  On the menu:  stir fry rice with beef, pork and chicken, chow mein, chop suey, and several other Chinese/Asian dishes.  Everything is laid out on the warmer bar.  Even brought in fortune cookies, for dessert, along with the prerequisite chocolate cake, white cake w/white icing, yellow cake w/chocolate icing, and apple and peach pies.

Joe, will enjoy any and all pictures you share with us.  Also, there is a plate all ready for you to take to work tonight.

Back briefly, even though I missed the sis/kitty.

Congratulations, NightTrain ('bout now's when I call my friends or relatives "chubby").  Do well, and stay healthy.

Emma, don't lose the duck--he/she's an eye-catcher.  As I said elsewhere, it quacks me up.

I'm sure SJ knows what to do with knitting needles--and whom to do it to!  And if this person gets close to a cat who appears to be asleep...

OKC Mack--will I be near the new bridge somewhere along I-40 west of you?

Joe, you might hit a little snow on the trip, especially in Indiana.  Compared to what we went through Tuesday, though, it'll be a picnic.  I'll be talkin' to Julie starting tomorrow night!
