Been avoiding this topic like a plague of locusts....but here I go kicking a Beehive...

After reading all this hollaballue about the flag, patriotism, disgrace, France, yadda, yadda, yadda...it basically boils down to this...

Paint them OFF the dam engines, go back to a plain ONION PACIFIC logo...

...because Uncle Pete is NOT going to have a engine wash or a guy with a sqweegee ready to scrub the stars and strips clean at the end of every run (Are some of you guys serious?, do you realize how much extra work and $$ were talking about, although I do like the tunnel wash idea)

Locomotives GET DIRTY! its inevitable, its their job, their utility machines meant to do a dirty job, not run shiny in a parade every day, only UP exec's get the shiny locos, and it really urks me when people get so bent out of shape about a DECAL getting a dirt on it.

Do you also suggest fines for anyone who lets those little flag decals on their car bumber get faded or worn? Or just toss them out when they get sent free to them in the mail? What about the people that have the little plastic flags on the plastic poles attached to their windows, I see those getting torn to bits and left flapping on the roadside all over the place, yet I dont hear people screaming about disrespecting the flag when that happens nor do I see people rushing to pull over pick it up and burn it because it "touched the ground". That level of flag-worship to me would be insane! So I only see one solution and that is to paint them off, Uncle Pete has less cranks than normal writing hate mail to them, the flag worshoping yahoo's wont have their overly-patriotic feathers ruffled by a dust coating on a decal of Ol' Glory, and this topic can die a much deserved euthinasia.

The flag is a Symbol, not a Holy Icon. They've been burned, shot at, blown up, dragged through the mud, dunked in the sea, frozen in airplanes, hoisted on broomsticks, branches, drapped over doors, windows, muddy trucks, jeeps, tanks, sides of ships, subs, used as bandages, bedding, and finally left in 10,000's of closets and drawers to become moth condominiums. (and I'm only talking WW2)

It is to be treated with RESPECT ... but NOT worshipped. If a decal of this symbol that adorns a UP loco, its to me just that, a decal of a symbol, if it gets dirt on it , worn torn or otherwise defaced, its something I see as inevitable and going to happen given the conditions of it usage, it doesnt rankle me because I realize its only the decal!

BTW I have 2 flags flying at my house, one that has been up every day since 9-11-01.

In addition to periodic cleaning of flag locomotives, they need to shine a light on the side of the locomotive when operating at night, and the locomotive must be parked in a shed during rain.

Also, if the locomotive derails and touches the ground, it must be burned.

Do you need to light up your car at night if it has a flag bumper sticker? That's why they are shiny; it is just a decal. You can't burn it, just repaint it. I could understand if the paint began to peel and fade it might be considered disrespect.

Yes I do ...Ken and Barbie.....

I was actually referring to the 10 thousand Canadian based adult website offers that drop into my hotmail account everyday, along with ebay warnings, offers from African guys to transfer money, and more college degree programs and medications than I could ever use.

On another RR forum I stated my belief thaty this couple is a perfect reason why in the past some criminals were burned at the stake and why it about high time we revived the custom, needless to say it got nuked as not contributing to the websites wholesome family freindly environment, so as not to rouse bergie ire, I wont repeat that comment.[;)]

In Canada, we have Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka who grossly dishonor decent Canadians.

Actually I was more embraced with your comment of "I will pay my taxes even if I don't want to because it is for a good cause-to better serve my citizens who need it"

And that just seems a little 'over the top' to me.

Paying taxes IS important, it is the way a gov't works, etc.... but you seem to be implying that even any taxes you had a strong objection to,..that you would not protest them, nor lobby against them with hopes of having them repealed? Just because a tax benefits someone is no cast in concrete reason why you should have to pay that tax. Unless it is fair.

I think it is a good idea to protest, but just how can you not pay your taxes here the IRS will be on your tail faster than the Red Baron on Snoopy. I think tax money should go little farther than defense, roads, and other small things. Not Ponzi schemes and socialist systems of wealth redistribution (for those of you in Rio Linda that's welfare). I still pay them though.

Are you kidding? If tobacco is a bad thing, outlaw it, if it is not bad enough to outlaw, don't tax it to death. I think you have a right to almost any thing (drink, smoke, own Tommy guns, drink soda’s that will make you fat) even if I wouldn't. I suppose you only want the rich to smoke then. Just beat up on the little guy.

well, heh heh, if I told you what my tax strategy was, then my secret would be out, or, I'd have to kill you [}:)]

Our good friend Junction Fan is from canada, where they have a MUCH more socialist perspective than we do here in the states...national health care, (supported by taxes) just to name one example. now, if you happen to think national healthcare is a great idea, then GREAT...but...what if you don't?

Canada has perforned more state funded sex change operations than any other nation in the western hemisphere, the last 5 years in a row... You know, to "cure" those poor tortured women who had the misfortune to be born in a mans body? SO, THE STATE gets to pay for their "cure". And all I can say is if my tax dollars were being spent that foolishly, I'd be marching in the street in protest.

Lets look at the facts: 1. Second hand smoke does not kill unless you breathe in a whole lot of it.
2. Your passion (assumed to be train watching) does kill because trains can kill people.
3. If you can't stand the smoke leave the area. For the sake of argument; you walk into your favorite restaurant and it is thick with smoke, when this has not been a problem before, you have two resources. You can complain to the management and leave, if the owner receives enough complaints he will not allow smokers (his choice not forced on him by law), or he will separate the restaurant into two sections; with one for smokers.
4. If it is so deadly why not outlaw it all together. Not that I smoke, but I still have a right do anything I want dangerous or not, as long as I don't harm you, a whiff of smoke as someone walks by won't kill you.
5. Why stop at smoking? Why not sky diving, skiing, bike riding, hunting, and other dangerous sports?

the link between second hand somke and lung canser is incoclusive at best... you have more risk of getting lung canser from radon gas in your basement then you do from being around someone that somkes... now that is a PROVEN fact.... also the risks of lung canser and smokeing is minimal also..thier are people that somked for 40 years and never developed any problems and their are people that smoked for 5 years and died of it... seems to me thier are alot more verables that come into play then just the fact of the ciggeret smoke...
also this is a free country... if you dont like the smoke..leave... dont tell me that if i want to put myself at risk doing something i like (and i did smoke...but i stoped..not becouse of heath risks..but becouse the wife said it was stinking up the house to much so now i use chewing tobbaco).... becoues you belive some inconclusuve resurch study... and also... disel smoke has more carsinigens in it then second hand smokeing.. and your sucking that down into your lungs evey time your out train watching... (never thought of that did you)
you have to keep in mind about ANY resurch study...first off..see what group is paying for it...alot of times the data is slanted towers that group..just look at the global warming issue... evey group that dose a "study" all slant the data to fit thier views on if it is happening or not...
just some food for thought for some of you anti-smoker natzis out thier

heh,,,,,what I'd be wearing is moot.

The point that matters is thet gov'ts sometimes pursue an agenda that philosophically runs against the preferances of one segment of society, in favor of another.

To claim the act of doing so is "beyond question" for the segment opposed, deny's them representation....generally thought to be more fascist than democratic.

If you've been following the developments surrounding Canada's statute 319(2), things are getting pretty far out of whack, common senses notwithstanding ..(ohhhh, I made a funny there)

well, actually, all the claims about second hand smoke "killing" are all hype and white lies.org...

Think about it.. there is absolutely NO scientific proof.. It is all speculation and opinion.

How would you set up a scientific experiment designed to meter "second hand" smoke? Once the medium becomes a primary component of the experiment, it can no longer be of "secondary" significance....such is a logical impossibility.

So, I realized that *that time* has come, and I needed to honor my promise.

So, I smoked an entire pack in 2 hours, and then quit, cold turkey. And stubbornly resolved to not let it beat me.

Haven't smoked again, since march 7...
