I AM one of those people who wants to take "In God We Trust" off of the currency, but sheesh, if you don't like what someone's signature says or that they made a religious reference in a post or whatever, just don't read it. I don't find the particular thread you mentioned to be interesting to me, so I just ignore it...not that difficult.

Well....there's religious fanatics, there's train fanatics, there's motorcycle fanatics, and fanatics over just about anything.
Aside from being a train fanatic, I'm a fanatical Atheist. I don't believe that religion is anything more than wishfull thinking, and a scam. (studied to be a Baptist missionary in my youth, turned me into an atheist)

Now before someone gets their nickers in a twist, it's my right as an American citizen to be fanatical about, or believe in, or disbelieve in, whatever the hell I like. Same goes for everyone else. I don't care for all the religious references seen in the signatures myself. I'm sure that there are many on the forum that don't care for mine, but they tolerate them. I tolerate theirs. That's one of the things that makes this country a fairly good place to live. If it gets to the point that I "can't" tolerate someone else's opinion, beliefs, or convictions, then it's time for me to leave, and find some where else to hang out. My recommendation for you is to do the same. Tolerance is a rare virtue.

I got a good chuckle from the holy rail road men post. At least people here have a sense of humour. lol

The ROYAL "Traveling Minstrel of the Holier than Thou Religion of LABOR,"

Speaks to you!

In the south during that time period they used to hang darkies (***s), while at the same time quoting Christian messages from the Bible. So your point is what?

You can right any wrong as long as you're reading from the bible?

I absolutly believe in god, no-where does he say hang ***s. That is fact!

Anyone out there who resent any mention of religion,"Santa Fe" is Spanish for "Holy Faith".Do you think we should never mention the Santa Fe Railway again?

We will now sing that old Southern Pacific hymn,Up the hill slow,Down the hill fast
Tonnage first,and Safety last. Amen.

Ok, humor time:

Guy dies and is met at the Pearly Gates when St. Peter says:

Look, we've been getting a little over crowded up here, so, before I can let you in, you'll have to answer these 3 questions, take your time and have a seat over there and come back with your answers:

1) What days in the week begin with the letter "T"?

2) How many seconds are there in a year?

3) What is God's first name?

The new arrival takes awhile, but finally thinks he has all the answers, St. Peter says "Ok, lets have your answers".

The guy replies "Well, for question #1 the 2 days in the week that start with a T are Today and Tomorrow"

St. Peter says "well, that's not exactly the answer I was looking for, but, Ok"

The man continues "question #2, there are 12 seconds in a year". St. peter replies "12 seconds??!! How did you figure that one??" The man replies "well, there's January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd".
St. Peter replies "Ok, Ok, that wasn't what I was looking for, but, I get it".

St. Peter says "Ok, what answer did you come up with for question #3 - What is God's 1st name?"

The man replies "well, now, that was a tough one, and I thought and thought about it and then it finally hit me! God's 1st name is Andy".

St. Peter replies "Andy !!!!!!????" How did you come up with THAT for an answer???"

The man replies: "ohhhh, you know! It's in that song we used to sing in church. Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me....."

Ladies, Gentlemen, Railroaders, Railfans and members of the forum at large: There is an old saying that comes from the previous three centuries. Civil discourse (discussion) must by requirement remain civil. For the most part I must admit that this is a very civil forum to be as large as it is. There are occasions when the membership will rise up when something has gotten out of hand. In the Depot thread I have found some of the most delightfull reading that I have ever read and in the technical areas where the Clergy of the rails preaches the gospel of all matters in view worthy (for the most part) of hearing. Freedom is a treasure, most especially that of speech and assembly which are praticed well in these threads. It was James Madison, one of the authors of our federal constitution and its Bill of Rights that had an absolute belief in Freedom of Speech as well as Peacable Assembly, with some warning from his letters: Civil Discourse and Peacable Assembly are among the highest forms of civilization when practiced among men (read persons) of good will. I can speak now as to what I am getting at. It is very rare that I do not read a great civility in these threads and a great deal of respect and even honor among the participants. Let us then understand that we can read and hear contrary opinion, but have the good manners to know how to deal with it. sign me as Elder Piouslion (By the way Roy is one where he worships)

To JIM SP9033

The simple point I was making re T&P literature was they
Mentioned Bible passages. The Subject matter of this
forum was religious fanatics. There were quite a few
postings pro and con re this posting and I just wanted to
co-relate how the two items in today's world can cause
such division and you sure took me to task for the remarks
I made. I did not mention my religious beliefs & it's not
important to you at this point in time and I'm sure you would
not be interested . Perhaps in a future forum I will take
time to espouse them.

Religious fanaticsm is a curse or all ages. It is a blight on something that is supposed to be a celebration of life and the "almighty" who I sincerely doubt excepts violence particularly in his name.

Al Quaida, Mary Tudor, Renaissance inquisitors of the Roman Catholic Church, John Knox, Kuresh (spelled it wrong), et al; they are all the same. They take everything out of context and completely too literal and twist it into some wierd hysterical crusade of mass ignorance, vanity, hatred and intollerance. Thease traites are closer to the that of Satan then of God if they actually studied their religious texts more carefully.

This current religious war between the U.S and the Middle East is a war that is really between a bunch of vain, arrogant and intrucive "Christian Elitists" of the West and the all hateful, ignorant, fanatic "Terrorist Scum" of the East. Both sides are a pox on civilization and would like to see them relocated to another planet so they can wipe themselves out and rid us decent folk of their destructive stupidity.

Religion and Politics are the biggest problem. The two of them are not compatible. They are as peaceful as paintshaker and a vile of Nitro. This whole thing of religion is that it has been missconstrued far too much and has held civilizations back too long. That is the main problem with the east. The biggest problem with the west is groups like those who go around to the third world countries and think that a flippin bible is going to fix their famine and pestilents even though man caused it.

Here is an interesting question for the religious folk. What is the purpose of God giving us free will if we are always praying that he give us a miracle?

We are our own selves and we are corporeal beings responsible for our own corporeal problems and our own corporeal solutions and neither God nor the Devil is really responsible for our own actions but ourselves. Sure there is the odd time where both entities make a guest appearance into our world but not all the time (physically speaking)

Religious fanatics are our own making and can be our own fixing if we stop them and shut them out. They have know place in a civilized 21st Century and I would suspect in a civilized after-life too.

Gabe, LC, CSX......LMAO.....

And might I add...

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon Virginian’s mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of Chessie
On C&O’s pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Dispatcher Divine
Shine forth upon our (Alco smoke) clouded hills?
And was mainline builded here
Among these dark (non CTC) territories?

Bring me my Baldwin of burning gold:
Bring me my Alco of desire:
Bring me my EMD: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my GE of fire.

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my reverser sleep in my hand
Till we have built reversing loop

1. Junction Fan: No the war is not between terrorist fundamentalists of the east and bigotted christian fundamentalists of the west, it is between terrorist fundamentalists of the east and those who believe in multi-ethnic, freedom-of-thought democracy. The problem we all face, and indeed Amtrak faces, is typified by our President asking the Saudi Prince to lower oil prices. Big favor! It is true that the Saudis have realized the fundamentalism they have themselves created is getting out of hand and is now even a threat to them, but still they are the ones themselves that created it. They still have religious police that check, for just one example that a young man and his fiance don't walk side by side on a Ryadh street (never mind Mecca or Medina) by the girl walks a certain number of paces behind him. Thus the recent horror on a Gaza Beach, now that this sort of thing has been imported into the area formerly under Israeli "occupation" after Egyption "rule" after a British "Mandate" after Turksh "rule" after Crusader "occupation" after Turkish "rule" after Roman "occupation" after the third Jewish commonwealth under the Hasmonian Jewish Kings. (Sorry for the history lesson but most statesman and some religious leaders of all faith sometimes forget it.) So Religion can be a horror. But it is important to realize that Democracy is not opposed to religion or visa versa. Including Islam. There are Islamic countries, including one or two in the ex-Soviet Union, that have decent relations with Christian countries and with Israel. And are Democracies.

2. The Catholic Church today recognizes the rights of Protestants, Jews, and Muslims to our own paths to the Eternal. Most Protestants and Jews and certainly a lot of Muslims feels the same way. I really don't know what is meant by the words "Religious Fanatic" on the original post. Is it someone who wants to serve the Eternal in everything he does, whether it is posting on the Forum, or trying to be patient on a supermarket or bank line when the clerk is fouling up and delaying everyone, or giving charity or just conducting is business as honestly and carefully as possible? If so, count me in as a religious fanatic! Is it someone who reminds himself of that promise to the Eternal by using the exact prayers his or her particular religion suggest at the times his or her religion suggest? Again, count me in as religious fanatic!

But if you mean that a religious fanatic is one maintains that his religion is the only one and others should either be converted or ....., well that is a person who is a menace in my opinion.

And Ethical Humanism is another approach to the Eternal, the "God in Man' and can certainly lead many people to fine and ethical conduct. No problem. So, for that matter can Hinduism or Shintnoism or Confusionism, and it was an Orthodox Rabbi that illustrated to me how the different "Gods" of these "Pagen" religions are, if you analyze their texts closely, really meant to be many different characterists of the same Eternal Spirit. (Like the classic Christian Trinity) Religion, like most tools for living, can be used for good or bad, and I have seen pretty much only good on this Forum

The humor of Amtrak-Tom is terrific. I am going to have to use that St. Peter story with my religious Jewish and Christian friends, but my Muslim friends might not understand it. The whole posting was worthwhile if only for that story, a real classic, thanks Amtrak-Tom!

They are just as entitled to their opinion as you are to yours.

What you may view as religious fanaticism others might view as simple expression of religious faith.

Your definition of fanatic?

"He" or "they" are allowed to say what they want here because "we", the majority of the other forum members, recognize that " their" religious beliefs and the ability to express those beliefs is just as precious to them as our choice not to express our religious beliefs are to us.

Typing GOD IS GOOD doesn’t make me, you, or anyone else a fanatic.

Just because some chose to wear their religion on their sleeve isn’t offensive.

What is offensive is when others choose to try and stop them from exercising their freedom to express their faith.

Has anyone "not allowed" you to post what you wi***oo?

No, so the same courtesy should extend to the person you are referring to.

If what is written there is offensive to you, you’re free to say so.

You are not free to prohibit others from stating a viewpoint you don’t agree with, solely because you don’t like it, or don’t agree with it.

Because when that happens, then who gets to decide what is "allowed, and what is "not allowed"?

You?

Me?

Then, if that happens, this is no longer a forum, but becomes your personal web page and soapbox...with no other viewpoints, (except those that agree with you) allowed.

The Diner is a place where a particular group of folks have been meeting for a long time, discussing food, personalities, religion, more food, each other, politics and just about anything that strikes their fancy.

And, just like a real diner, if you don’t like what’s served there, go eat elsewhere....

Ed

I could not agree more, Ed! I wonder if the person who started this thread would be complaining if someone quoted the Muslim Q'uran or writings from the Buddhist or Hindu faiths? Far too many people are getting way to sensitive about another person's religious beliefs. It's pretty ridiculous to be offended just because someone made mention of thier religious beliefs.

Let's remember to keep this forum fun! [:)] Let's not get all worked up and "offended" just because someone made a mention of their personal religious beliefs. There are far beter things to be "offended" over.
