blue streak 1 Don't know if salt and sand is being used properly.
Sand is useless during an ice storm, at least as long as the icing is taking place. It just gets covered up with more ice. Been there, done that.
Salt is only marginally useful - again, the icing can overwhelm it. If plows can keep the ice off the road, and the salt is spread heavily enough, you stand a chance of staying ahead of it.
A real problem is snow on top of the ice - it just makes it all that much worse.
An ice storm New Years morning in MI back in 1959 had the salt/sand trucks backing around, since they couldn't get enough traction going frontwards on the hilly roads around Milford.

Deggesty I was introduced to my great-grandson this evening; Katie had John, Brandee, and Henry John up for supper, along with John's brothers. I was also given a card, addressed to Great Grandpa Johnny, with the statistics: henry john morgan 01.13.14 8 lbs., 5 oz. || 22 in. John does well at quieting his son (far better than I did at quieting John when he was quite young). What is the significance of listing a newborn's length?

Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
For those who pine for the good old days -------- Take a look at this winter storm and the number of RR shutdowns and deaths.

Johnny, I doubt that length itself has that much significance, unless it falls outside (most likely below) certain figures. However, a medical person could probably look at a length-to-weight ratio and make some sort of determination of a problem. I think most babies I've seen figures on are in the 19-22-inch range. So congratulations on the healthy, bouncing (not yet, I hope!) great-grandson!

It's a stat... If it's any consolation, I don't remember how long either of my kids were.
Curiously, length at birth isn't always an indication of adult height.
A quick update on WX problems. CSX Augusta area ( GA RR ) completely stopped due to trees on track no report on old SAL line..
We missed any power problems here but ATL north of I-20 very iced up this morning. By this afternoon sun had melted most ATL ice. No ice here tonight. Up to 500,000 Ga. electrical services out at height of outages last night with about 70% in 2 Augusta county's area. At height of outage at AGS about 75% of all services without power. National guard is being sent from ATL to AGS
Trees down all over state but none in this town ( cannot believe it )
Really feel for Raleigh area but they laughed at us 2 weeks ago.
NC Governor will be taking a lot of heat ( he wish it was warm air )
Sure is interesting reading all these threads from Batam Island, Indonesia, the Land of Eternal Summer. No trains until you get to Singapore but with 17,500 islands, the world's largest fleet of small water craft!

It was mild yesterday, so before the "winter storm" got here (6" of snow - pshaw!) I was able to pull down the anemometer, relocate it on the mast, change the batteries, and mount an LED light on it so you can see it at night. Then I got it back up and working, so it's good for another year, battery-wise (I use lithiums in it, so it'll probably run longer than that).
The sun is peaking out now.

It was beautifully sunny here in San Antonio today. The high today was 85. .
You guys should come on down and visit some time.
MurrayYou guys should come on down and visit some time.
Been there. For as dry as the place is, an evening thunderstorm while I was there last caused some pretty significant flooding. At least I can shovel snow...
My visit there during USAF basic training doesn't count.
Boy did this last storm just miss us.
1. 20 miles NE of us still 4000 services without power.
2. Augusta still much in the dark
3. Amtrak running all SE trains except Star north of JAX. It may be the secondary SAL line of CSX will be the last to get cleared of trees from Columbia - Raleigh - Selma.

Hope everyone is having a nice Saturday.
we had a good day.Csx wasn't so lucky. 6 trains stopped on the Garrett sub. Made it single track from Sherwood to Garrett. Did make it to Deshler and North Baltimore today too. Tomorrow it's Church and Sunday school.
Any adversity always has a silver lining for some persons.
All our local TV stations in their paid program slots have been running a 30 minute push for standby generators. Anyone have reports from SC and NC ?
Phoebee you have been strangely silent.
Quiet weekend here...Folks must be out of town.....or busy digging themselves out of the snow.......
Cold and relatively peaceful here all weekend.
Just learned that an elderly woman who worked in our gift shop for many years passed away on Saturday. She'll be missed - she was always a darling.
We learned our back-up generator lesson in 1998 with the big ice storm that January. Now they're everywhere.
78 and blue skys ! lite wind and a warm happy day in cocoa, florida. our prayers to all who r suffering with cold and ice. god bless
How to tell when you're having a Monday. Power went off sometime in the night. Ice followed by snow after midnight cooked a transformer somewhere. But, no power loss at work. Being the good employee, I dressed by the light of a cellphone. Why not use a flashlight you ask? Because all the batteries are dead. Candles? Yeah-right! I found 2 little votive candles that were about burnt out. At least the kitchen smells good. Remember how you can pull a little rip cord on the garage door, and manually open it? Sure you can- after you rummage around in the dark garage to find an old curtain rod to untangle the rip cord from some frayed cable up above it, while standing on a bucket. To be honest, if you turn on the car lights, and open the door, there is almost enough light to see. Almost. So, I smell bad. I need a shave. My hair is standing on end. And I'm wearing a pink dress shirt, and a purple and brassy colored, patterned necktie that looks like it was made from the leftover material used to make a wing back chair in Liberace's den. But hey- the sun's shining, and the weather liars say we may get a few days of warmth before the next blast of deep freeze air.
It ain't true unless you show the pictures! We're in for up to eight inches of snow today; it started in this morning. We have no place to go as of now, but I have a friend driving into the area today from Michigan, whom I'm a little concerned about. At least the icy stuff stayed to our south, so far. They're talking about a chance of thundersnow, which should liven things up a bit. It's all supposed to be done by tonight. And tomorrow starts a real heat wave, which means, for us, a return to normal temperatures (normal high for today is 35; we're supposed to hit the upper 30s tomorrow and Wednesday). Railroad stuff for me today will consist of watching the news sites and resuscitating my old freight-car files on the Indiana Hi-Rail Corporation (ugh!), because somebody asked about some of their gons.
We're right behind you Carl. Starting this evening, and the weather watches are calling for 3 to 5. Was five below this morning but has clawed it's way up ti 15. No. I would not want to drive I-94 in lake effect snow. Got pretty nasty the last time.
Norm
Not sure this is lake effect, Norm...the winds are strong out of the southeast, and the storm has moved in from the southwest. Forecast totals are a little lower now, from three to six inches. The barometer's still falling, though, so I fear the worst is ahead of us yet.It looks like western Michigan is getting hit again as well. I'm still not sure about lake effect, though--with the lake mostly frozen over it doesn't have as much of an impact. Having said that, it does appear that there's a heavier band of snow at the southern end of the lake right now. There have been patches of ice in our area, but they've avoided us so far.I saw a train on the Rochelle webcam; they are getting a bit of snow, too. Theirs is supposed to end earlier than ours, probably in a couple of hours or so.
