mudchicken-  I think I just saw your trash can lids.  Are they round, silver, and moving northeast at about 60 m.p.h.?

Azaleas in bloom all over.   Temp: high 70's.

If we had azaleas in bloom, they would be in south Texas by now.  Since I can't do a raspberry in print, I will just move the whole Chatterbox.  See you in part 2.

Sir C - got your high winds!  Hit almost 70 around noon and dropping like a rock right now.  33 tonite.  Brrr.

Blew the birdy water pan clear across the yard.  And the sun is shining like there is nothing wrong down below.

Have a Flicker in our yard.  We hunted all last year and up to now for what was making that odd call.  I knew we had a Flicker since he kept trying to hammer down all the trees.  But the strange "call" which has no real melody but sounds more like a squeaky branch, evidently belongs to him.  Don't know if he is protecting the property or looking for a date.  Everybody eats in our yard!

High winds last night. Blew garbage cans and picnic table over . Water dried out of the flying dirt, left brown spots everywhere.

Scotties look a little strange with a "fro" until they get back inside.

This is possibly the first really warm day of the year--temps well into the 60s--and I think people just want to get out and enjoy it.

Somewhat tangentially, it's Opening Day at the Cell.

So I guess it isn't surprising that Metra's late-morning dinky was filled to capacity before it got out of DuPage County, and is expressing to Chicago, with an extra train taking up the slack on the BNSF line from Hinsdale on in.

I had an editing project to do today, and am waiting on information for my next sightings report, but I will go outside after lunch, cleaning up branches, leaves, etc., from our yard.  It's too nice to stay in!

...and then hope to start rolling my lawn...It really needs it.

I wouldn't dare roll my lawn yet (or venture on it with a tractor) - the soil is heavily clay and when it's wet, it makes a mess in a hurry.  Right now I'd just be packing down the snow anyhow....

But we, too will be seeing mild temps all week, staying above freezing almost all the time, but not getting so warm that we get an excessive melt.

Still, that's bad for the maple syrup folks, who need freezing temps overnight and warm temps during the day to get their sap.

Weather....Our Sunday was full of sunshine...and moderate temps.  Believe it went to 51degrees.  Tomorrow, we're to see 65...Hope it really happens.

Must install new battery in tractor, and then hope to start rolling my lawn...It really needs it.  Several days are to be nice to start our week.

We had a funny looking yellow orblike thing shining here...got us all the way to 40...although it still felt like 26...due to a bitter cold NE wind ....

I had lunch and trains today!  It is Bad Order Sunday, so all but one coal train we saw had to set out cars.  The TXUX cruised on by going south.

2 old Sante Fe's took inventory out to the Havelock Shops and ADM.

I did fire up the snowblower - this was "heart attack snow," really heavy and wet.  Even the snowblower bogged down once or twice.

I really felt sorry for the poor fellow at the end of the 200' driveway with a shovel in his hand.  I hope he didn't have to dig out the whole thing by hand...

I was pleasantly surprised by the attendance at the outdoor show today - it wasn't bad at all.  Now it's over, so I can kick back for a bit.

In Grand Haven, the tracks ran right by the field.  A football game on Friday nights would usually yield two trains (more consistently than the winning of the game); the "Cannonball" freight from Muskegon southward (to Waverly or Grand Rapids, depending on the era) and the passenger train from Holland to Muskegon.

GH has a new high school since I left, and a new football field to go with it.  It's also not far from the tracks, but I can't comment on the visibility.  And you'd be very lucky to see anything from there.

Our March is behaving better...cold start today, but a high in the 50s forecast.  Tomorrow is also supposed to be good.  But April may still fool us, as soon as Tuesday.

The weather was pretty cool and I got to railfan and watch the G'daughter's Track Team at the same time. Pretty good day!

The C&O Saginaw line (ex-PM) was less than a mile from our athletic field (we crossed it regularly when running distance workouts on local back roads), but there's a large ridge between the two, so you couldn't see a thing...

March in the north country came in like a lion

It's leaving like a lion, too.  A couple of inches of the white stuff so far, and it's not letting up.

Besides having to fire up the snowblower in the AM, I suspect this is going to put a major dent in attendence at the "outdoor expo" I'm working this weekend.  It's being held indoors, but the roads will be a mess.  I probably won't need my alarm clock, as I'm sure the ditchfinder brigade will be out in force once it gets light...

Mookie

Welcome to 2014 and the new space for Chatterbox.

Beautiful Day here in So Central Kan.  Went down to Ark City today for The G'daughters Track Meet. Anyone who's been to an outdoor College Track Meet can probably qualify for the 'Bunions on Their Botoms Club" Mischief

The Best thing about this Track meet is not only do I get to see the Track meet, but I get to railfan a part of the local Railroad scene, I don't often get to enjoy for several hours in a stretch.

The facility for the local JUCO sits just off the South Throat and Leads for the BNSF's Ark City Yard.  Waiting to depart was a solid tank train. Just two engines and a Buffer Car on each Southbound.  When a NB UP Trackage Rights (?)cleared going NB, Both the SB's departed.    The first on had one DPU a former Warbonnet ( Paint was really scruffy! The other SB was just two units on the point, no DPU.  Then a UPR NB with a COFC/ToFC and a string of Auto-Max units. Then came a BNSF with an older ES out first followed by a (really scruffy,) old Warbonnet.  The came a SB COFC and then two NB Container trains.

Much of this traffic we never see over around Mulvane on the Ark City Sub to Wichita.  It seems that most of their traffic going NB goes up Through Augusta, Ks and on towards Topeka and KC through the Eastern Line through the Flint Hills(?).

The weather was pretty cool and I got to railfan and watch the G'daughter's Track Team at the same time. Pretty good day! Thumbs Up

When they do track work, who does the work (private or rr) and who pays for this work?

It varies - certain work is covered by the state (which owns the ROW).  Funding for major improvements generally comes from outside sources (grants, etc).

Day two of "Outdoor Expo" is done.  One more day to go.  Getting decent exposure, although the wine & beer trains seem to be getting more attention than the outdoor sports oriented activities (bikes, canoes).

Winter storm watch for Sunday and Monday AM - might cut into attendance if we get much of it here.  Most of it is forecast for the Tug Hill area.

Tree:  comments?

Mostly accurate on the historical aspects and the current operations.

The former Utica & Black River is operated by GVT's Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern.  ADIX is a tenant.  The information with the map might lead one to think it was jointly owned.

In addition to the Thendara-Big Moose trips, the Thendara operation also runs between Thendara and Otter Lake, where there is a passing/runaround track.

Recently learned that trips to Big Moose are on hiatus until work is done on the track between Thendara and Carter Station.  The track from Carter Station to Big Moose was rehabbed the year before last.  This will likely bring speeds from MPU58 to MPU64 up to 25MPH from the current 15MPH.

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad - It's more than just a train ride!

Joe's day off on chores, so I am running around like a chickenless head.  However, did get Trains Magazine away from Driver long enough to glance at a map of Tree's Favorite Railroad!  I need some down time to really study it, but just wondered if anyone else has looked/studied it?

I remember reading an article about the quake in National Geographic--how it triggered a landslide that dammed a river, formed a new lake, etc.  I'm sure I delivered the news to all of the customers on my paper route that day or the following day.

Can anybody remember where they were, 50 years ago today,  right about now?  I was in the Alaska earthquake, trying to save a bottle of my favorite cherry cough medicine from meeting it's maker on a concrete floor.

Small world!    I was in Alaska on a Nike missile site overlooking Anchorage from a 4000 foot mountain.
