Yep - 2013 is "in the books."  It'll be interesting to see what 2014 brings.

Same crap, different day - Poor CSX being blamed (along with irresponsible speeding motorist) for bad crossing where in reality the city is deficient for bad approach grades at the crossing (city responsibility for rough x-ing and doesn't meet AASHTO/AREMA minimum standard) . Easier to blame railroad for cause of accident. News-workers  (there aren't journalists or reporters anymore) can't be bothered to dig into why the house becomes a drive-thru so regularly. City too cheap to fix or mitigate a recurring problem. City willingly/knowingly created the mess with old concrete paving evidence.

I know it's January, but can we close the door to the icebox?

The thermometer says +5F, but the wind chill is well below that.

Yesterday we got a quick dose of snow.  It was starting to come down heavily as I sat down with the newspaper.  I dozed off (exciting news day, donchaknow), and when I woke up it had stopped snowing, but not before we got around 4" of the stuff.  I heard reports of 9"...

And we aren't even in the traditional "lake effect" belt (they got belted, too).

Aside from that, it was a quiet New Years Eve.  Everyone apparently kept it between the lines.  I walked up to the fire station shortly after midnight to change out the fire report book for the new year and the hamlet I live in was dead quiet...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings Larry, but we're sending you more of the same. Devil

We've got cold and snow here for the next day or so, then it's on the way. Smile

Larry, if I find out who left the ice box door open, I will nail it shut, with them inside......

Weather people back home are predicting lows next week in the -20 range, last time I remember it being that cold was about 20 years ago. Was the first time I remember the schools closing because the buses would not start. If I don't get down south, I'm going to be going through Howes additive like crazy in the semi.....

Got light snow this morning with an inch of sticky snow at dusk. Everything coated on the north and west side. Kinda odd for here.

It hasn't stopped snowing all day here.  We had about four or five inches when the snow was shoveled on our driveway this afternoon (notice that I'm not saying who did the shoveling).  Two or three more inches have fallen since then.  So far it's been light and fluffy, not too hard to handle.

Our snow is supposed to end by tomorrow morning, but there may be a lake-effect backlash coming in this far (they're talking another 6-8 inches for areas close to the lake!).  We had nowhere to go today, but tomorrow's a different story.

Snow hasn't started here yet....Word was it would do so about 7 this evening....and depending which forecaster one hears, the prediction is from 2 to 6" of the stuff and to move on out by Thru. afternoon.

Then the deep freeze right after the weekend.

The wind chill display on my home weather station showed a balmy -22F overnight.  The temperature nearer the ground was "only" -5F, but 15 or so feet up in the air, plus the 7-10 MPH wind, it was definitely colder.

Got a couple of errands to run before Ma Nature lets loose on us.  Already seeing some light flurries, but we could be in for more later.  Not as much as they'll see south of us, but something nonetheless.

I keep getting weather warnings on the smart phone, mostly for winter weather advisories and warnings, and wind chill warnings.

Well, the weather has started now....Actually that happened a little after midnight overnight.  Earlier I made an area for my miniture Dachshund to go out and do her business.  The snow is light {less moisture}, but I believe we received about 5" of the stuff...Some wind here too.  But it's certainly getting very bright now....Late morning....and maybe we might even see a peek of the sun a bit later.

Sunday is another question....We just might see more than this snow fall.  And then the super cold right after that....

So, no plans to venture out today....My car does have AWD, but it too shall stay in the garage.  Everyone be careful.  Little truck with wide tires is not the best in this stuff.  Have {2} 70 lb. sand bags in it's very back, and that does help a little.

Quentin, isn't it wonderful to be able to stay at home when it is dangerous to go out? The current danger here is smog in the valley. As I have commented before, I do not know just how high the pollution reaches, but our house does seem to be above it. There was an item in the morning paper about a company that handles scrap metal having to cut large pieces up with a torch--and producing much noxious smoke in doing so. We are currently having "no wood fire" (unless you depend upon a wood stove for heat) days. I have a gas fireplace which I hope I do not have to use in my living area. Katie has a wood burning fireplace upstairs, and she has no intention of using it.

Looking at my (N-gauge?) Rudolph (it was not left here by Santa), I see that the railings at the ends are to close to the body for anyone to pass between them and the body (or, are Chinese so thin that they can?)--so, do not board it at the front on the engineer's side, or at the back on the fireman's side.

Congratulations, Tom, on your team's defeating Wisconsin yesterday--and Mookie, your team also won.

Deggesty...Yes it is.....I believe the snow system has now passed us...In fact, the sun did shine, a few min. ago, but it's not now, however it's very bright.

And a young fellow just cleared my driveway..{70'} long, and now we're ok if one would need to go, but since I don't seem to need to, we'll just stay in where it's warm.

We, on the other hand, are still in it.  This lake-effect snow blew further inland than they were initially predicting, and we've practically lost the front step that was cleared yesterday.  Both of us will have to start digging soon, so we can get out to the street tonight.

And tonight....they're talking about -9 for a low.  And tomorrow the wind picks up.

Oh, well, makes us appreciate the good days when they come!

Had to run some errands.  Brrrr.

The truck seemed to be stuck on showing -9F.

I got out the hand anemometer at one stop and measured about -31F for a wind chill.  I'm showing -5F here at the house right now, with a -31F wind chill on the weather station.

All of which means we aren't getting above zero today.

It's only a light snow, but it's drifting somewhat, and that's caused problems for some motorists.  Friend of mine who regularly drives a semi between here and Syracuse ran into heavy snow and slowed down to about 35 MPH.  Said he was tickled by the people who blew by him waving one finger salutes.  He used all his fingers when waving to them in the ditch further down the road...

More paperwork to do for the fire meeting tonight, so I better get to it.

Two of my digital thermometers are optomistically reading +22F.  But both are in the sun (it's clear and sunny!).  The other one is in the shade and reads a realistic -1F right now.

The wind has  subsided, but not quit, and walking into it is a real "treat."

A good reason to stay inside, and hope that no one requires assistance via the fire department.

Our forecast high for Monday is -15 F...and I have to be at work at 0400...

CN has already had a few cold weather related delays around here.  Power shutting down, UDEs, massive air leaks.  I can't wait to see what happens Monday...and Tuesday...and Wednesday.
