i saw insane drivers destroying them selfes and other with these AWD vehicles. if u have no experince in hazard conditions pull over and wait. where do u need to be so bad that its worth dieing or killing some one for?

But I just have to have my latte mocha and a pack of smokes!
Bad accident in the next town this AM, we ended up going to it as well. Entrapment, broken leg, three kids with negligible problems and another fellow who wanted to go to the hospital to be checked out. Three patients transported, one to the trauma center.
Don't know what supposedly happened, but it was on a slushy hill.
A significant number of the snow "casualties" here are in the Interstate, where people just have to keep on keeping on. As often as not, all they end up needing is a winchout.

csx isn't doing so good today. they have a q 509(?) parked out by mile post 90.3. They didn't have room in the yard because it's full. They also had 2 other trains parked on track 1 when we came home. Found out that q 010(hot ups train) was recrewed in Garrett.(they normally run from Chicago to Willard). Murphy Siding It's not uncommon during conditions of bad driving weather around here, for the radio stations to keep reminding people that a four wheel drive means that while you might be able to drive twice as fast as everyone else, you can't stop twice as fast.

To Norris' comment.
That seemed to be the common line of thinking when I lived near Hot-lanta a few years ago...The common practice and thought porocess seem to be that, if a driver had built up enough forward velocity, they could get through any situation...The only thing not though out, was how to stop( use up that excess velocity) before they ran into the vehichle in front of them.
Seems that things have not changed any...[All those transplanted Yankees seem to need retraining each time they get a littl snow or ice there. Fact born out by my neighbor who is retired from an Insuance Company.. They reported an accident count of over 1,000 crashes one day this past week....And no derailments made the news... Guess the Engineers were able to steer pretty straight and keep their trains in line...
samfp1943All those transplanted Yankees seem to need retraining each time they get a littl snow or ice there.
Heck, they need re-training right here in the north country... Or at least so it would seem, especially after the first snowfall.
Right on target Larry.

....Using another "trick" to help in slippery conditions that's available: Use "2" position on the shift quadrant to start the vehicle moving if you are on a slippery road surface. This puts the transmission in "2nd gear" and not 1st, and reduces the amount of torque to the rear wheels. One can "feather" the throttle and apply less force that may prevent the drive wheels from spinning. Wheels might spin easier if starting in 1st gear, having more torque avail. to send to the rear driving wheels.

stay safe and happy. u r no good to anyone if u do not arrive alive 2 help.

NS has some switching to do uptown(archbold). Under a winter storm watch. Matt's snow hill is really huge now. back to chores.
Well, contrary to what the "Groundhog" said, I think Spring might be around the corner. After about 5" of snow yesterday & overnight , and temps getting into the upper 30s here today; I decided to walk over to one of our local stores to get several items, and must have seen 20-30 Robins out looking for food? (worms, etc. under the snow....)

Mutt - we have been told that we have "year round" robins. Can't prove it because I spend almost no time outside the house or Millie in cold weather. But I do know we have robins that eat bird seed - all summer!
We even have our own ground hog - Unadilla Bill. He lives a great stuffed life in .... Unadilla NE. Gets dusted off once a year and throws a big party.

Tuesday ( Feb. 4th, 2014) Down here on the Southern T-con it is snowing !
Got up at 5 AM it was clear. Went out to walk the dog. By the time we got back to the house it was snowing. It is now about 10.45 AM, and there is about 3 to 4 inches on the ground; still accumulating, too! Heard( snow was falling so heavy could not see it.
One train going West about 9 Am; not too many cars...Might have just been an effort to plow out the line crossings and such. They were not moving too fast. Traffic is definitely reduced, at this time.
Temp is now 28 deg F and a light wind blowing (3 mph) . Weather talking heads are promising at least 2 more systems to drop more snow on us before the week is out....
Stay safe and warm everyone.
Wow! between my computer (which is about ready to die, and Kalmbach's Web Site) I find it very hard getting in here sometimes. (computer is about 11 years old.)(Kalmbach's Web Site is just old & Stupid!)
Here in the Louisville, Ky. area, we are supposed to be about 30 degrees all day, with rain, sleet ,and snow starting about 1600 hours. The major problem seems to be the icing predicted. Schools in session are releasing early, after not going yesterday. Very much hoping we don't get the ice and related problems; such as loss of electricity.
Mookie, and others, I always thought the Robins went somewhere during the winter months. Cardinals(no pun implied since the U of L's sports teams are named the Cardinals) Sparrows, and a few other birds are always around.[and I am NOT a U of L fan!]
Up here in the north woods the robins definitely go "somewhere else." Seeing them is usually a harbinger of spring.
I don't usually feed the birds in the summer, so don't know if we have any cardinals around then. We don't often see them, though.
Supposedly up for a few inches of snow tonight. They haven't mentioned lake effect yet, so this could be an area-wide event.
Getting things ready for a safety seminar this coming Sunday. We have about 90 firefighters signed up so far and the speakers are all set, so it looks to be a good day. Even the weather looks as though it will cooperate.
Bird experts from UNL said NE has some robins that stay year round. They stay hidden for the most part, but do exists out there somewhere. Maybe they stay in their country houses until spring. We usually trade our sighting of robins for Juncos.
We are getting snow. Now what? Some moisture before snow - but not much moisture in the snow. Going to be a non-event no matter how much we get. Will probably blow into Kansas and onto Sam and leave behind the ice!
Going to open the front door later this afternoon and watch 5pm traffic on our fairly steep hill. This is where the 4WD, 4WBrakes and no-tread tires generally provide the best entertainment during a snowstorm. Text messages should read: "going normal speed (fast) downhill and can't seem to stop at busy intersection. Oops!"
winter storm warning. matt had extra homework sent home. Ns was switching at work when I left. Nothing else left to do but watch it snow.
blowing and drifting snow. waiting for the snow to stop. Matt is closed. Back to chores, then need to dig out.

One of my neighbors own a tree service. He had an incident that ended with one of his tree cutting trucks laying on it's side in the middle of the street. No one was hurt, but there was a bit of commotion trying to get the thing back on it's wheels. While he was talking to a policeman filling out the accident report, a smart-alek friend of his stops and says: "Hey Tom - I didn't know you did work on the side."
WOW and I thought I had a sick sense of humor . or was that a sixth sense of humus?
CShaveRR Your fault, too, SJ...you didn't tell him two of those three bars were closed!
Mookie, is now practicing to be a 'stunt driver' ?
Good that is is OK and did not spill her coffee while barrel rolling around town
Out here, in South Central Kansas, (MP225) on BNSF the weather is the pits!
COLD and SNOW ! Started yesterday AM and was off and on for the rest of the day... Light snow overnight, but the wind was blowing ( now about 8mph out of the North,) and we have an accumulation on the ground of about 5 or 6 inches.
Seems the BNSF is not too fluid today, almost 11 AM, and I'd guess there have not been 4 or 5trains since about midnight. It was about the same numbers yesterday, as well. Traffic is not rolling too fast either. I guess what Ed Blysard said about Crews, is probably a fact...The roads out here ar awful, slick and icy. That would be problematic for the crew vans to get around, and more snow and accumulation is predicted for the next several days.
Stay Safe, and Warm, Folks!
Heard of an incident a few years ago involving a cell phone (texting wasn't big yet). A woman was involved in a collision. When the police arrived and went to her vehicle to talk to her, she was still on the phone and waved them off. Apparently the phone call was more important than the havoc she had raised. I don't think it ended well for her.
If I were in the position of the officer, I think I'd rip the phone out of her hand, tell her caller that she'd been involved in an accident and would get back in touch when the matter was cleared, and put the phone in my own pocket.
I'm sure she'd be outraged.
Been snowing since here about 1AM (winter storm advisory wasn't in effect until 3 - what's up with that?), and hasn't quit since. Not a lot of accumulation here yet (2-3"), but the wind isn't helping any. Not terribly strong, but enough to cause drifts.
Which is OK - plenty to do in the house...
We didn't get much snow; about 3-5 and very light. But the wind was horrible and the 25 below wind chill overnite didn't help. But the sun is shining like a summer day, so you can't be too unhappy.
And they closed just about everything today. So far traffic has been behaving very responsibly down our hill. But the day is still - well, not dark yet. Then we may find some less than capable drivers.
Larry- A couple summers ago, I witnessed an accident at a traffic light downtown. A car pulled up to a red light, stopped, then quickly turned right on the red and ran into the elderly man crossing the crosswalk. Everybody around ran over to the car and the downed pedestrian. He was OK, but beat up by the ordeal. The driver, who was a teenage girl, was standing back a ways and talking her cell phone. I walked over to her, thinking she was calling 911. She wasn't. She was telling someone on the fun "I gotta go. I just ran over a guy. I'll call you later."

After reading all the "News" you all have posted, seems like it makes mine very trivial.....
We got about 5" of snow, Sun. evening, most melted off by Mon. afternoon. about a 1/4" of ice Tues. evening taking down SEVERAL branches of the big Pine tree in our front yard, along with taking the electric drop from the utility lines to our house. Electricity off about 2100 hours Tues., back on about 1200 hours today. Very cold night in the house Tues., warmer now. No more news to report from here.[except I'm not shivering now like I was last night, early this morning.]

Cold it is. Saw a Polar Bear on I-75 the other day. He was hitch-hiking southbound.
