OMG Atlanta is getting a two peat and three peat. Almost identical snow & ice storms both Monday night and Tuesday night. Expecting 1 - 2" snow then icing Monday night in Atlanta and up to 6 " snow in north Georgia. Then a separate storm Tuesday night almost all freezing rain & ice.north of a line Columbus - Macon - Augusta, Ga..
Going to the Gas station in the morning. All other foul weather items still in place but will check for some tire chains. Still not likely to be found.. Not expecting to be able to drive up hills out of home without any.
Blue Streak - While I know that the southeast simply isn't used to, or prepared for, winter weather, it still causes us up here in the north woods to chuckle.
As noted in my previous post, I was out driving around yesterday in weather that would bring Atlanta (and most of the southeast) to it's knees. A few schools closed, but only because the heavy snow put the kids on buses at too much risk, and they would have had issues keeping the school grounds clear for parking, etc.
When I made my second trip into town, the mall was packed.
Got through our fire department training today in great shape. All of the speakers did a good job, although the critiques were all over the place. The same presenter often got both good reviews and a bad ones. You just can't please anyone sometimes.
Unfortunately, about 25 folks who had signed up didn't show up. Some had valid reasons (work or illness), others either forgot, or didn't really plan on attending in the first place.
I do have some good ideas for next year's sessions!
For now, I'm glad it's over.

Well, Blue Streak 1:
You better stack firewood for Monday... THis is what we are looking at for out here in South Central Kansas, and whatever we get will be ontop of the 4 to 6 inches already on the ground and unmelted, from last week !
The Weather nerds are now naming winter storms on the Weather Channel...The wife was watching a short while ago, and informed me the LOWS (7 of 'em) are lined up across the West from here. She said it looked like a Freight Train.
It is beginning to look like the small snow blower, the wife bought at Home Depot is going to be a good thing. I cannot believe that we are getting this much around here, if this keeps up[ Me and the dog are going to need crampons to walk in the ice.
Better be piling up some more fire wood, and make sure you don't run out of coffee...

Tree what brings most of the Atlanta area to its knees is the 3 - 6% grades on many streets and roads. My 3% drive is not any picnic for others as well when it is ice..
Monday morning, and 16 below. If I was Garfield, I'd hide my head under the blanket and stay in bed. Some winter drag on because of continual snow. Some winter drag on because of continual cold. Some winter drag on because of global warming? Blue Streak- I live in a hilly residential area. This year, we have received less than normal snowfall, yet had a fair amount of ice and freezing rain. Since the street department guys haven't been getting their typical overtime plowing snow, the city has had the sanders out a lot. Right now, the yards in my area are covered with clean, white, snow. The streets are covered curb to curb with what feels like a half inch of sand and salt. I could just send you some of the sand/salt. Send me a LARGE, self-addressed, stamped envelope, and I'll see what I can do for you.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Monday morning:
WE had about 3-4 inches of very light powder snow ( That 70%the Weather dudes were predicting! )
Been up since 5 Am and have heard No noise out of the neighbors( 2 Crossings about 3/4 mi SoWest of here, and 5 Crossings to the north) I would imagine their crew vans are moving pretty slow.
Government is not doing much in the way of Snow removal.
Murphy SidingThe streets are covered curb to curb with what feels like a half inch of sand and salt.
LIke the places that do "chemical snow removal..." Just spread a thick layer of salt on the sidewalk and the snow won't stick, eliminating the need for shovelling. Unfortunately it does create the need to replace the sidewalks periodically...
The sand that is spread in the road has a side effect - road crews must occasionally go out and "cut shoulders," removing the sand that was spread on the road and ended up on the shoulder. It can, and does, build up - I need to take several inches out of my "margin" (between the road and the sidewalk) this year to promote drainage - keeping the water out of my yard and in the proper drainage pattern.
Since it's mostly sand (with some grass and weeds), it can make half decent fill, and a word to the crews, together with a ready place to dump it, can get you several free loads.
afternoon
sun is nice. going to get cold tonight. main roads are ok but the back roads still have snow.Ns has some empties to pick up at work.Didn't see anything else moving when I left.Chores to do.

Looks like Blue Streak 1 is going to get it again. The Governor of Georgia is declaring a weather emergency, in preparation for something ugly-again.

About 20-25 miles south of me....

It appears that the whole SE is going to get hit with Atlanta not the worse spot. Really hope this forecast is incorrect. Snow anyone can deal with but the ice------------oh boy !!!!!!!

Possible wide spread power outages could mean weeks before all service is restored as power crews would be stretched too thin?
saw Ns hauling a large transformer eastbound while at work. They also came and took care of things uptown. The sun being out is nice. Have errands to do.
Nice and sunny here today, if cold. Daughter (near Syracuse) says she's getting her workouts with a snow shovel. They got several inches overnight.
I haven't watched "disaster central" (The Weather Channel) today, so I don't know how things are progressing in Dixie.
Town highway folks came around the hamlet today and knocked down some of the higher snowbanks. The highway garage is about seven miles distant, so one of their loaders has taken up residence outside our fire station, plugged in to keep it nice and cozy. We've threatened to letter it for the fire department...

At least replace the amber light with a red one...
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
Cold and raw-drizzly damp here in San Antonio.
At least the ice stayed to the north of us.
I may have some help...
Just glanced at advertisement showing someone stuck in mud and being pulled out. Had it muted, so almost missed it - but they were advertising Viagra.
So I guess if you can't find chains, use that on your snow and ice?

Don't see how that would help, sounds painfu....oh wait, you mean the Viagra.
Better than those Cialis commercials with the guy and his daughter/granddaughter (way too young to be his wife). Those ads creep me out.

Makes you wonder who runs the casting department on these commercials......
You're missing the point, SJ--they use it in the mud to solidify it, after which they drive right out. I doubt that you'd want to do that with ice and snow. And if you can't get out after four hours, then what?I suppose if she's too young to be his wife, Zug, the separate but adjacent bathtubs are to maintain a sense of decorum. I've definitely been cooped up in the house for too long!

The Roanoke rail cam is interesting right now - a lot of white stuff in evidence....
And I've been wondering what they're up to. Parking has been banned, some track panels on site, and machinery that was there a couple days ago is now gone.

Well the weather --------------
Here SW of ATL nothing but rain until 1900 now getting 1/8 th inch freezing rain every 30 minutes. Lights blinked about 10 times enough to get wife concerned. Battery back up for computer about 30 minutes.
ATL north of I-20 is completely shut down. Only movement is MARTA rail on Saturday schedule. No bus service at all either Marta or Greyhound. . Don't know if salt and sand is being used properly. Roads there were OK today but have refrozen with freezing rain since 1600. About 150,000 customers without electric power. The Augusta Ga. area is much harder hit than ATL.
Was a small news item that said CLT is really taking a hit. Wonder if Phoebee can give us an update ?
`Here is a wx link
Notice the icing pattern especially in the NEC later this week

Snow is almost always a pain in the rear gear, but I absolutely feel bad about the southeastern states with the ice! Having lived through many winters where rain comes before sleet and snow - I wouldn't wish that on any living creature.
People who live in colder climes adapt. But this would be like an earthquake and sandstorm at same time right here in flatland. Totally unheard of. Until now???
I was introduced to my great-grandson this evening; Katie had John, Brandee, and Henry John up for supper, along with John's brothers. I was also given a card, addressed to Great Grandpa Johnny, with the statistics: henry john morgan 01.13.14 8 lbs., 5 oz. || 22 in. John does well at quieting his son (far better than I did at quieting John when he was quite young).
What is the significance of listing a newborn's length?
