Southwest Motel, Houston. Started out bad and got worse.
Exhausts - Back in the 60's, a volunteer fire department here in the county had a pumper with straight pipes. Always a hit with the motorheads at a parade, but I'm not sure I'd want to run it at a fire...
Before I was in my department, a small tanker they had had stacks - and I don't think it had mufflers. They were all gas engines then. I understand they had "flappers" on it, and when leaving town up the hill those flappers would be straight up...
Time for bed. To beat to work on that project tonight, so it's up first thing in the morning to get ink on the printing press...

BOC - I had to smile @ the straight pipes. Our landlord (mid 70's) drives a fairly new truck and it has some non-factory pipes on it. They are a little loud, but are so mellow - don't think he would ever get stopped for them. With house shut up, I can still tell when "Harold is here"!
'68 fastback what? (I should probably know, but refresh my memory)

Good Evening
Lots of sun and cooler temperatures for us here...we had a nice afternoon with the diner gang here...had something of a cruise afternoon going...including my '68 fastback....complete with somewhat straight pipes......mmmmm...can we has noise?
Ed, Larry: Is this the hotel fire you are talking about? Very sad either way... to the survivors....
Have a great evening!!
Larry,
Mid 60s construction back in the day when “to code” meant what you could pay the inspector to ignore, heavy plaster ceiling or support wall collapsed, these four separated from the others in the “fast attack” group searching for civilians.
One of them was a mid 20 year old female “new hire” probationary fire fighter; it’s hard on the department to lose one that young, much less her and the other three all at once.

Ed - It is sometimes discussed in the case of line of duty deaths (LODD) whether the firefighters had any business being where they were. Sounds like in this case, they did.
Odds are the structure was made heavily of "engineered" components - trusses, etc. They're great for construction but not so much if they catch fire.
People are always amazed at how fast fire can spread.
Decent weekend on the railraod. Not a lot of riders, but ops went well. Had a heck of a thunderstorm overnight Saturday, but it didn't bring anything down on the tracks.
Plenty to keep me busy around the house. Looks like Mom will be here in a couple of weeks to attend her reunion. Still don't have her travel plans, though.
Better get off the computer and to work.
A good Sunday to all. Sorry I haven't been in lately, but have been doing other things. Hard to believe we are in June, especially when we are having early May temps. Yesterday was a semi rainy day. My brother & sis in law were going to take all the grandkids fishing yesterday. Once a year, the Jim Beam Distillery opens the gates to let parents/grandparents bring the kiddos in to fish in their lake (something they don't even let employees do). But w/the threat of t-storms possible, they decided not to chance it. By afternoon, the sun was shining a little bit, and man, was it humid outside.
Today's a little better, with plenty of sunshine, but cool temps (70 F right now), supposed to make it up to 79, maybe 80 degrees this afternoon.
BOC, am glad to hear that your tests came out for the good!! Everyone have a good afternoon, take care and see you all later.
Good Morning
Kind dull but very sticky out here...we had a coupla monsoons show up earlier this morning so we do get rain here...

9:08 Houston time, Moore Ok getting hammered again by twisters…if you pray for others, now would be a good time.
Four fire fighters killed, one in hospital so far for smoke inhalation and heat exposure, fire went 5 alarms in minutes.
My wife was in her agencies admin office, directly across the freeway from it, they watched and she said it went from a small first floor fire to engulfing the whole front of the motel in a matter of minutes….as fast as one of the people called 911, it had spread up and across the roof.
Older motel, common attic, cheap sprinkler system, you know the rest…roof and or wall collapsed on the fire fighters, who were doing a search and rescue for potential victim.
Wow - everything in OK is not OK.
Firefighters lost in Houston.
All is not right in the southern part of the true midwest!
Houston Ed - Bad fire in SW Houston - five alarms, four firefighters injured.
Southwest Freeway looks like a parking lot.
Now we know where Hades is--in a small bag.

Several contractors, not sure how many feds (they weren't wearing hats), several state DOT people, as they own the ROW, plus our MOW guy and train crew (me and the engineer).
They run a tight ship - had to make sure we were on our best behavior! On the other hand, they're still pretty laid back. The jumbalaya was excellent!
Apparently one lesson they've learned the hard way is to officially test dead end lines on the way out. Seems that they don't relish finding a "fatal" defect on the way in as it tends to trap them until the defect can be fixed. We didn't find an such defects yesterday.

Have found a fishing net works great as bat hears metal ring and goes into mesh !
For the past hour we had a winged visitor IN our house...a bat. All three cats jut spent the entire time leaping, jumping, clicking, mewling and all else after this bat... I had to get my trusty squash racquet out and clobber the poor thing out of the air and into a little bag...and take the poor fellow outside...whereupon it flew around me then took off elsewhere....
Mookie Tree - Ferry move?
Tree - Ferry move?
No, we didn't move a ship.
Occasionally we have to move our equipment from one point to another, sans passengers. In this case we had to pick up two coaches that had been left on a siding for us by another crew, and take them to Thendara.
Today's job was to take an FRA track geometry car over our line (and the shortline's line), which we did. Impressive piece of machinery, and nice people to work with. Mud may have encountered these folks once or twice. We had #220 on the line today.
These things get around. I was told the car would be in Wyoming this summer...
Stuff to do here at home tomorrow, then back on the railroad.
afternoon
thunderboomers coming by.Matt is going to be a sixth grader next year. tonight is Friday.going to grab a salad for work tonight.
Yes, Mookie, the weather out west of you has not been what we expect it to be here, on the back side of the Rockies, two months into spring. I still have to have some heat on my lower floor--Katie was surprised two or three days ago to see that I am still heating my living room-dining room-kitchen (she would leave a window open on her floor when it was cold so she and Jackie would not get too hot). We had cold rain here the first part of the week, so that there has been snow in the mountains is not surprising.
I also do not remember when I had last heard or seen "ferry" used in connection with moving a car or something else from where it was not needed to where it was needed--but I remembered, and I am only 77 years old.
Going to be sticky and hot here...84F feeling like 100+ by the time the day is out...not so yay...
Have appointments with oncologist and others today...sheeesh...mumble grumble gruffle snort....
Have a good day!!
Johnny - I hadn't heard that word used that way in eons! However, I would suggest that he round up - a snow shovel, pontoons, lots of rain gear and ear plugs.
We are moving a lot of water that way - along with thunder noise and I see the Mts. west of Denver had snow - and he lives sorta close to Mts.
So Tree - ferry away!
Mookie, you do not need a boat to ferry something on a railroad; you just need something, such as a locomotive, to move what is needed there from where it is (here). Perhaps we will hear, from the engineer, what was needed where it was not.
And - I can't type on my iPad - I need a "real" keyboard....Takes me forever otherwise.
Update on weather - we live about 4.5 to 5 miles from "ye olde fishing hole". We have had enough rain that the Driver ought to be able to cast there from our back yard. A lot of underpasses around city are "under" and the lake is where the overflow goes from surrounding farmland. It was full on Tues. So we will go out there and watch from on high while the ducks and geese swim over the picnic tables. Watched them do that a few years ago. Something new to do!
