Coffee on warmer; camels parked outside.

Our favorite restaurant in beautiful industrial Gary, Indiana, has a sign on the wall (one of many) which reads,

"Nine out of ten men who try Camels prefer Women."

Ed:  I'll stay on the ground, if you ever hear of me falling to my death, it means the bridge I was crossing dropped out from under me........

Got a gate built for our deck, hope the daycare inspector is happy with the way I had to do it, no room to install a post on what would be the latch side, so figured out how to latch it on the hinge side.  Gate opens inward, so kids pushing against it from the inside can't get out.......

Back to the road tomorrow, first job is to go get the newer truck.........

SJ, Pat took me to Ruby Tuesday yesterday (we can't begin to thank you enough for introducing us to them!).  Service was a little spotty, but the food was great.  (We'd wait too long for refills on drinks; that was probably the worst offense).  Usually, we try to share a good mood with our server...if they're any good, it helps; if they don't respond in kind, we probably won't get the best service.

Ed, she's already worried about getting old?  All of us (you, me, SJ) know that we really don't have to grow up!  She'll do this again another 50 or so years from now (and probably often in between).  I'm jealous of SJ because she's actually gotten to meet her.

Oh golly - where to begin:

Houston Ed - just when you think they may be grown and you can let up on the 24/7 worrying....

She's my hero.  I don't fly well, hate heights, would have to turn over and grab that poor man in a death hug but would never let myself be in that place to begin with!

Tree/Joe - Join the club.  We don't have an over abundance of any restaurants here in Lincoln and about 75% of them I won't go near.  2 thoughts - anyone can wait tables.  Everyone tells you that if you need a job.  Go wait tables or do fast food.  That's fine if you are over-organized, have a great memory, and in a sit-down place: courteous w/o being condescending, think fast on your feet, write so you can read it - even if you put it in a puter, can move at a high rate of speed and not either drop it on the customer or all over the floor - the list goes on and on.  I have seen people quit after the first few hours - just didn't have the abilities needed and sometimes the pace is extremely fast!  Trust me - "everyone" does not have what it takes!

But it is summer - early summer.  School is just out and it will take all summer to get these people trained to be even mediocre and then they will quit and either go to another job or back to school and it cycles around.  As winter drags on - the help sometimes gets very good.  Sometimes - they never get it and if you don't have a strong manager somewhere in house- well....

We got free lattes just yesterday - overuse of mouth and no ears!

But if you go in with awareness at the door - you will fare better.  I always ask right up front if there is a manager on duty.  I don't need to see them, just make a mental note that there is someone to talk to if necessary.  They seat me under cold air vent - I ask to be moved immediately - not after food arrived hot and is now cold.

They carry plates of almost hot food thru a large dining area and when you get it - it is room temp.  Send it back immediately.  It comes back hot & dry - it was microwaved and will taste like it.  Call for manager and have them remake order.  Managers need to know these things and will usually always work very hard to make your visit enjoyable.  (Most can cook and wait tables with the best of them)

If management treats you like a cranky old person or is drippingly condescending but food was acceptable, leave and never go back but be sure to tell everyone you know how horrible this place is.  Word of mouth is either wonderful or slow death.

And if your server was either A+ or brand new, trying very hard and scared to death - tip.  Tip accordingly.  Newbies that show promise - deserve a break.  Newbies that are train wreck bad - either need to be re-trained or gone. Tell the manager!!!!

And on the local irritation front - AC is shaky.  Little cool air and fan never shuts off.  Landlord on it, but will take probably all day and maybe 2 to get it fixed.  Maybe longer if they have to replace the unit.  Sigh

Stuff like that doesn't help any...

I had a friend in USAF (actually a roommate) who was a skydiver.  I helped him pack his chute a couple of times in the hallway of the barracks...

The restaurant wasn't a Denny's - I've always gotten decent service at our local version, and fairly fast.  Breakfast (my favorite selection) almost comes out as soon as I order it most of the time.

Can't fault the restaurant, though, as I said.  It was totally the server who screwed up.  I'm sure he got a thorough dressing down.

Waiting for word on daughter, who is going in for surgery today.

Evening all.......

Murray:  Switching from my T700 into a 2013 Kenworth T680, the powertrain is the same, which is the big reason I wanted it.  This one is one of the few with the Cummins engine, our newer ones have Paccar engines.  Have heard quite a few horror stories about shop time with the Paccars, most people I've talked to started having injector and wiring issues......

Larry:  That would not have happened to be a Denny's, would it?  I have had time issues with them in the ones located in Flying J truck stops, have walked out of one before my food reached me, could not afford to sit for a half hour while they cooked my breakfast.  Another one in Franklin, KY took over an hour before my meal reached me, I felt sorry for the couple with three young kids next to me.  Management blamed it on an inexperienced cook in the back, the only one cooking, he was doing one order at a time.

Denny's is actually losing money in the truck stop locations, they can't seem to grasp the thought of truckers wanting simple comfort food, without all the bells and whistles, and wanting it FAST.......

A nice fathers day today, had dinner at the parents (the ribs were very good), and just sat and talked for a while.  Good day to slow down......

I gotta say - the service here at the diner is a whole lot better than at the chain restaurant we met my cousin and his wife at tonight.

First server was just getting off duty after an eight hour shift - she took our drink orders and disappeared (can't blame her for that, though).  The young man who took her place, however, simply didn't have a clue.

We'd been there for an hour before any part of our order came out (and then only because we asked about it), and apparently he couldn't read the ticket, 'cause he screwed it up.  And the fun was just beginning.

My cousin had ordered mashed potatoes and gravy.  The kid brought out dressing.  My mother's order included a half a sandwich - they brought out a whole sandwich.  Cousin's wife asked for gravy on the side.  We had to request that.  Twice.  Cousin had ordered chicken noodle soup, Mom had ordered potato.  Kid brought out potato and gave it to my cousin.  He just passed it over to Mom.  When we pointed out that my cousin had chicken noodle soup coming - he brought another bowl of potato.

Cousin and wife frequent this particular establishment and said they've never had this much trouble.  They know one of the managers (since they're there so often), and she felt so bad the whole thing ended up on the house.

Too bad, too, as the food was pretty good...

I don't think the young server has much of a future in food service...

We did have a nice chat, though.  We certainly had plenty of time!

Dinner at daughter's last night.  Think we'll go get some bedding plants for the bulb garden today, then another meal out with my cousin and his wife, and my mother.\

Some sprinkles this AM, but it looks like they're going to clear out.

Sixteen Tons. You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?/Another day older and deeper in debt./St. Peter, don't you call me because I can't go;/I owe my soul to the company store.

Last night, Katie had a party to celebrate her fiftieth birthday (30April) and to welcome old friends and new neighbors to our house. It was quite pleasant.

This past Wednesday, I went out to cut the grass at my house which is being sold, and met the man who is buying it (he made an offer of more than the listed price a day or so after it was put up for sale); we are waiting for the necessary financial institutions to do their thing. He told me not to bother cutting the grass.

Another year older and a deeper in debt (name that tune!).

Happy days to Matt and Sarah.  Matt I've had the pleasure of meeting, Sarah not yet.

Nice day here today - got the lawn mowed, and it wasn't even overdue.  We've had upwards of 4" of rain in the past week, so I'm sure the grass is just getting started using all that water up.

Headed for daughter's this afternoon so great grandma can enjoy some time with great grandson (to me he's just a grandson, but he's still great!)  He's got a couple of shirts coming from the state fire chief's expo, too.  Great grandma's is a late birthday present.  Mine is just because "Papa" is supposed to spoil his grandchildren...

You behave yourself in Fairfield (within 7-10 miles north of where I grew up) or we'll have to come getcha. Got a load of asparagus looking for a way to Lincoln.

(and you would also be 35 miles SE of a nicely repainted MILW GP-20 that ought to get your  Cheesepicker's attention in Connersville,IN)

Katie came downstairs a little while ago to tell me that the quail babies were out. I went upstairs to look out her living room window--and saw two quail families come out of the hedge by the front yard; one has seven chicks and the other has two chicks. Both families went on an excursion across the street; perhaps the parents knew of good eating places. There are several magpies around here; I hope they are not able to find the chicks. Yesterday morning three or four magpies had a conference outside my door.
