Mookie, I hope to look better than I do now when we reach our destination, and, since you are reluctant to come wave to me, I will not stay up late Tuesday night.

Johnny - you are a very smart gentleman!  Trust me - you don't want to see me at Amtrak time - coming or going!  So sleep tight - and I will do the same!

Sing Ho! for a train--the City of New Orleans, which we take tonight for the Windy City, and hope to see the Shavers and my nephew and his wiife, as we go back to civilized, comfortable transportation. the three of us will occupy two bedrooms tonight, and two bedrooms on to Salt Lake City. We had a pleasant day between Jackson and Memphis--sunshine all the way, and very few scares foerm unobservant? people along the way.

Katie and Jacklie are out, seeing Memphis, and I am resting in a hotel room which I will vacate in time for our train. I may catch up with the Cafe and other threads in Chicago. Mookie, I hope to look better than I do now when we reach our destination, and, since you are reluctant to come wave to me, I will not stay up late Tuesday night.

Another sunny day, and it looks like it may stay that way for the day, anyhow.

But the temperature as I write this is a whole +34F.

Picked up a solar kit last night at the PBS auction.  It's all of 45 watts, but I've got a couple of places I think I'll be able to use it.  Time to go take it out of the box and see how it works.

SJ, is this ped bridge right at Camp Mookie there?  I don't know if I could take many notes from it, but it would be nice if the better train turned out to be on the wrong side of another one.

BC - lot of water under a lot of bridges in 7 years!

You would not know the area - and they won't let you get close enough to see it, either.  They are building an Arena just north of the old depot.  The ped bridge comes in from, I think, the Saltdogs stadium (our semi-pro baseball team) and will funnel people from that stadium into the arena and vice versa.  The old depot is now all commercial and they built a new Amtrak station just west of the old depot.  Moved tracks, tore up a scrap metal yard and moved it, are working on new parking garages and in general squeezing the rails to the west.

However, Camp Mookie remains pretty much the same, except for silent crossings.  Minor changes, but nothing major .... yet.   Only thing constant there is change, so look for them to jump straight in the air and do something, someday.  Did get some new signal bridges, however.  And they upgraded the back track.  Amtrak uses it, so needed new shoes to go with new dress.  Now I can watch trains over there and not hold my breath that they will just slowly go south and just as slowly tip over!

On our way to Jackson, Tennessee, this afternoon, Katie asked about possible flooding of the Mississippi that might affect our travel Tuesday (Chicago-SLC). I tried to reassure her that we should have no trouble (she really needes to be back at work Thursday, and Jackie should be back in school, also on Thursday).

Is there any word from someone closer to the situation who can give me a definite word to pass on to her?

A few days ago I began working on another old pad of sightings, transferring them to the computerized files.  This pad came from late September to late October 2006, and includes about ten pages of exciting stuff spotted during that great get-together there!  Hard to believe that that was seven years ago!

It's a bit chilly in Cookeville, Tennessee, this morning, but I expected it before walking to the motel lobby for breakfast.

We had a wonderful day in Bristol yesterday, even though Katie had to drive to Charlotte and back Friday evening to pick Jackie (her daughter) up--all flights from  that could have brought her to Bristol were canceled because of bad weather. Jackie had left Salt Lake City early Friday morning, and amde to Charlotte by Friday afternoon, and she was then given report after report of delays in her flight to Bristol. (We had rain all the way from Chattanooga to Bristol.)

Yesterday, when we arrived for the breakfast for the 50 year + alumni, I immediately saw three of my classmates (we are 55ers), and during the day I saw five others. I don't remember just how many there were in my class, but one of my classmates told someone there were about thirty-five of us. A good turn-out. I also talked with the lone survivor of the faculty/administration of my days who is still there.

We had much better weather for traveling yesterday than we had Friday, and we expect the same today, as we go to Jackson, Tennessee (we are not traveling directly, but seeing more of Tennessee than most people do when going across the state).

Tomorrow, we leave Memphis (by train) for Chicago, and then home.

Cheers!

Snow on the truck when I came out of the TV station last night.  Not much, but definitely snow.  Nice and sunny this morning - and all of +28F...

The tulips are pushing through the mulch, though, so if it'll finally warm up, the bulb garden should be quite colorful.

Well - got up early and took breakfast trackside and ate in 31 degree weather!  But they run a lot of trains at breakfast, so you go when the trains go.

We were there yesterday pm, but they didn't run a thing.  Seems a ped bridge they are building over the tracks developed a 3 foot shift in the concrete and scared the bejeebers out of the trains.  Bridge is in process and no one can say why the concrete shifed that much.  Guess it was uncomfortable.  So all trains were halted after 1 pm.

Today, as we were coming home, I noticed really dark skies in the north.  Checked radar and saw snow was just to the north of us.  But never fear!  We have sorta sun, sorta cluds and a high predicted of 55, 51 or high 40's.  Pick your favorite!

I am birdwatching in the netherlands and we have a tiny kingfisher bird - no tail bird - sitting on 5- correction - 6 eggs.  Amazing.  The big peregrines are only on 4 and 3.  And of the 4 - only 2 are hatched and getting busy growing.  So much for size!

Off to the park so the Driver can watch....absolutely nothing.  Ducks, geese, people and no trains!  But we all have our quirks....

Good Friday morning everyone.  My, what a difference a day makes!  Our high yesterday was 83 degrees; this morning, we had a low of 46, and our high this afternoon will be 50 degrees F. I'm back in sweat pants & a fleece long sleeve top.  Allie woke me up at 2:15 this  morning, wanting a drink of milk in her sippy cup.  Was raining pretty good then.  When I woke back up just before 6 a.m., and looked out the back door 45 minutes later, noticed that the winds last night had knocked over the patio table (wrought iron) and the umbrella in its center. That about all I see, as far as 'wind' damage goes.

Heard that one of the Marathon Bombers was shot and died after they got him to the hospital overnight.  Sounds like the other one is still on the loose, and the authorities are telling everyone to stay in their homes until he is captured.  Even the colleges and schools are closed, and they're urging businesses to not open up today.  And then all that is going on down in West, TX.

Joe, thanks for breakfast this morning.

Everyone have a good day, take care, keep as safe as possible, and see you all later, hopefully.

Joe - you won't get all the rain, since we wrung some out before passing it along.  Looks like we will wring out some snow, too - just a little - before we pass that along.

Cold, blah day.  So I am going to go be cold and blah.

Johnny - knowing the timing of Amtrak thru here - and if you are awake - just wave.  There isn't much to see in the dark and quiet, so get your beauty sleep.

Thanks for the encoragement; I need all I the beauty sleep can get.

Rain was forecast for the Chattanooga area today, but we have not seen any since we arrived. Perhaps tomorrow?

We stopped in Lynchburg, Tennessee on the way here, and walked around the main industry's visitor center. We did not take a tour of the manufacturing plant because no samples are given--the county is dry. We saw that Jack Daniel began running the business when he was about nine years old, having learned enough from his uncle, who was also a minister--his uncle was persuaded that he should not be combining the two types of work.

Looks like Carl is out of the deluge now, although they're probably still dealing with the leftovers.

I think the Gulf of Mexico is keeping this storm system well-stocked with moisture.

We might see some weather out of this system, but it appears most of it will stay to our south.  The big cities of the northeast corridor are in for it, though.

Just working on this project and that, while occasionally checking in on the disaster in Texas.  Lunch is done.  Back to work.

Afternoon all.  Just got back in from picking Allie up at the bus stop.  Sunny and warm, with a good breeze blowing.  Later tonight, as the cold front moves in, between 9 & 10, is when we have the potential for some rain, hail, winds gusting 30 to 40 mph or more.

Think when my sil gets home later this afternoon, I'll see if she'll run me to the nearest Walgreen's, so I can buy one of their $30 weather radios, so we'll know what's going on tonight.  Believe it has a cord on it, but also runs on batteries, in case power goes out.

I'll also look into buying a e-cigarette, to help me get off cigarettes.  Been thinking about that for a couple of months.  SIL got one last week.  She was surprised, when she "lit" it up, that a plume of 'smoke' came out when she puffed on it.  I told her it was just water vapor.

Everyone have a good afternoon, take care, keep safe, and talk with you all later.
