Haven't heard the temp in a couple of hours, but thinking it is about 41, 42 degrees.  At least the wind's not blowing, everything seems to be calm outside.

Stourbridge Lion, nice picture!!

Here is the menu for the rest of the afternoon and evening:

Beef and Noodle casserole

Fried liver w/carmelized onions,

chicken pot pie

Mashed taters w/bacon, corn fritters, green beans w/ham, fried green tomatoes, buttered lima beans, cooked turnips and buttered beets

Desserts:  Lattice-top apple pie, lemon sponge pie, Shoofly cake, spritz cookies

Hope you all enjoy, have a good afternoon/evening, take care, and see you all later.

Late this morning it started to give us some light snow.  So Jean and I headed in town to get a few things, and by the time we came out of Meijer's....The ground was white.  Perhaps an inch...but it was wet snow, and very slippery.  Had to be extremely careful getting back home...{about 3 mi.}, or we would have been sliding off the county roads, or into something or somebody....

Now....It's about 2.5" or so, we'll need to go and measure another time, as it's to be moving on soon...It looks like I might find about 3" of the stuff.

26.8 degrees now.

Liked it better with the ground bare.  And, it appears we will be into the 40's staring about Saturday....so perhaps this stuff will not last very long.

It is true, some snows are more slippery in trying to walk, or drive in.  Today was a slippery one.  When it's very cold, it tends to be less slippery.

On the way home, I practically creeped around intersections I had to turn, and still the back end tried to come around....Partly helped by being equipped with positraction.  Enough of this stuff...Phooey.

Looks like that tunnel was bored right into solid rock.  Seeing light in side, shows it's curved and not very long.  I was in one {years ago}, about like this one in size....It was totally brick lined, over in Johnstown, Pa.  {Yes, I know I was in a dangerous place}, and certainly don't recomend doing so.  And once was enough.

Those timbers sawed at an angle to make the arch, always made me wonder how much they might be able to hold if lose rock really came down on it....Not fitted to precision, doesn't make it look very strong.

Wink Quentin; don't forget the "ice grippers " for you and Jean's shoes or boots.    Here in the mtn's we haven't had snow yet .  The temps. are in the 20's at night, making for a heavy frost and ice on the pond.  The ducks don' have non skid padding on their feet, and very funny  when they land.  You folks be careful  on that " freezy skid stuff " as Bounci'n Bill Baker used to say on his Indy radio music show as he was klipping across the kilocycles and mutilati'n the modulation.

Went to a dinner meeting tonight amidst light snow.  Left the meeting a couple of hours later in the same, and had good roads and visibility even as I came out of a grocery store on the way home.

A quarter mile later I was on an unlighted four lane road with several inches of snow (and danged few landmarks) in whiteout conditions.  A fellow ahead of me was clearly befuddled by the situation and managed to cover all four lanes several times before we hit another road with slightly better landmarks.

A mile or two later I was out of it (but still driving through several inches of snow).

Gotta love a good snow squall.

Thanks!

It's the West Portal of Tunnel #9 of the old Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek Railway.  It's located on what is called today Gold Camp Road at  38.7318° / -105.0259°

Here is me standing at the East Portal of the same tunnel before we drove through it.  Keep in mind I'm 6'5" so that will give you a feel for the size.

Yep that is Solid Rock, got to love how many of the old railroads of the GOLD/SILVER boom blasted their way through the Rockies to get the line built.

Good Friday morning everyone.  Not sure of the current temp, as I haven't turned on the TV yet, to hear any news & weather.  But I will say that it is cold outside.  Going to have to really bundle up later on, when I go to the library and grocery store, to get a few things.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast of doughnuts, danish, bagels, bear claws, bacon, eggs, etc.  are on the warmer bar.

Quentin, good to hear that you and Jean made it back home safely.  Everyone have a good morning, and see you all later.

I am on the disabling injury list today.

I have a split in the outer corner of my left hand thumbnail bed.  Kind of falls under the same category as a paper cut in pain.  Do you know that even tho I am right-handed, I have a tendency to either hit or try to use that left thumb more than I thought.

Was supposed to be a domestic goddess today, but may have to put it off for a few days.  Awww.Mischief

It is cold, but not unbearable.  We were trackside yesterday watching the MOW put in either a new rail or at least a temp fix - hard to tell from a distance since they don't approve of me looking over their shoulders while they work.

And NS and CSX both made an appearance traveling thru town.  Always nice to see something beside the ugly orange.

Cannonball....you have a good memory...re:  Our trouble with {both of us}, falling on the ice we had last season.  That was a very bad one....Ice on everything....It was even a problem walking on the snow...!

I remember we did talk about "ice grippers".....So far, this season, it's totally different, but we've got a ways to go yet in this Winter.....and really, around here, we seem to see most ice conditions in March.

The fall on the ice mess last season was a bit serious...Jean, a cracked wrist....me, very lucky, as I did fall on our driveway and went down hard....even banged my head to the scary point, I thought, I was in serious trouble....The Lord pulled me through with no damage...!  After falling {driveway is on a slight rise from the street....I had a most difficult time of even getting up....Believe I had to craw over to the grass area that had snow and ice on it, but that was some better than the sheet ice I fell on...

So...we'll hope not to see that serious ice cover again this season.

I was just amazed how slippery it was yesterday with the brand new {wet}, inch of snow as we very carefully drove home.  Have my special weather prove sand weights in the very back of my Xtreme, and that probably was not very capable of helping that much on that stuff.  But sensing the bad conditions, we made it back home safely.

And Darrin.....That photo of the other end of the tunnel really shows the solid rock the tunnel passes thru.    And I too like that photo.  The ex road bed seems to be very smooth there now being an auto passage way.

Thanks C W....Yes, a safe trip home.

I miss the kinder gentler days of the winter of my youth, when I had the dexterity to do things better.

You put your boots or galoshes on over your shoes...dug out the driveway, got the car started and warmed up and away you went.

And you drove with confidence because you had Firestone "Town & Country" Snow tires.    And as the old commercial slogan went...  "With Firestone Town & Country Snow Tires...You go...or Firestone pays the tow!"

Well, I made it out to the grocery and back home before the 'mess' comes in in about an hour or so.  Our temps are above freezing, so I think we'll probably only see a little bit of rain (hopefully).  Even with the temps above freezing, it feels colder out.  Not much of a breeze/wind, so don't know if they're recording a wind chill or not.

Mookie, sorry to hear about your thumb.  I have a place on my left index finger, from poking myself with scissors/nail clippers, trimming my toe nails the other day.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now on the warmer bar, with all the different kinds of fish, regular side dishes and desserts.

Everyone have a good afternoon, what's lift of it, a good evening, take care, and see you all later.

Murray, that train is headed by CP 2424 (I think, I can't be sure of the final digit) a heavy Pacific. You can see an Express Boxcar behind the tender, for Storage Mail. That commercial must have been shot around Montreal.

Notice the snow tires are all black walls, in an era when Whitewalls were king. Back then, my Dad would have used Penner Tires. A Canadian only brand out of Winnipeg. He sure hated when they went out of business, because the American brands cost more. With the notable exception of Sears, but they also gave must less mileage. About proportionally less than the full priced tires, so you didn't save anything in the end.

You don't want to know the negative opinions the grown-ups of the time around here had about that VW commercial

So far, during the first 3 days (Tues.-Thurs.) of the Barrett-Jackson Auction on Speed TV, I am only seeing about $200,000-300,000 worth of cars a day I would like to buy. I am definitely going to have to win a lottery.

Our temperature has skyrocketed to only -2°F now. We are supposed to get up to freezing tomorrow, but they are calling for snow as well.

People around here might want those studded tires in the morning, if what they are not calling for, does hit us in the morning:  freezing rain.  Would those studded tires work on ice, not just the snow?

Murray..........I've checked out several of the commericals.  Does take a fellow back a ways.  Checked oujt the 1954 Corvette one too.  Chevy screwed up in the early life of the Corvette....They created it, and then almost let it die, because of almost no supply of them....and problems, not soon attended to....and the attitude of the Dealers was less than interested in them...{At least, that was my experience}.  Guess I wsa lucky I finally did end up with a little later one...The '57.  Think they are still one of the classiest of the Corvette bunch....

Bruce....Back in the late 40's early 50's...I used Atlas brand of tires....One reason was that was the tire Standard Oil Co. stations carried, {my family had an Esso Station}.....and they were good tires with an excellent warranty.

And Murray....do enjoy a lot of the "period" auto stuff.  Guess the "car guy" in me, won't let go.

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Well, it looks like we dodged the bullet last night:  our temps range from 32 up to 35 degrees, and streets, etc. are dry  this morning.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for hot tea are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer bar this morning:

bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes, waffles, syrups, jams, jellies, preserves, biscuits, gravy, grits, toast, kiwi, papaya, pears and apples.  A little bit of everything for your Saturday morning brunch.

Murray, thanks for answering my question.  That is kind of what I figured, but it never hurts to ask a question, does it.

Everyone have a good day, keep warm, take care and see you all back here tonight, for our pizza fest.

....Winter appears.  Another inch of snow overnight.  But...tomorrow, we're to see temps near 50 degrees, so that will work on some of it, for sure.....and make a mess too.

No wind, and low 20's now.  A big high pressure in the area, so believe we'll see no more from this system.

Had an email {earlier this afternoon}, from a niece {smart phone}, traveling south, on I-95 south of Wilmington, De., heading for D C, and she indicated they had passed thru several accident sites.

I-95....Not my favorite place to be in "good" weather....
