I-95....Not my favorite place to be in "good" weather....

Based on my experiences on I-95 (especially south of D.C.), I tend to refer to that highway as a NASCAR track, only with no numbers on the cars...

Thanks, narig01......Such a tragedy.  I thought it was a simple view representing the magnitude of the incident.

Just read a short time ago, another body was found on the submerged part of the ship and having a life vest on.  Believe that's 12 known dead now, with 21 still uncounted for.

Item: The media is still digging into what the Capt. did, etc....But however the ship got to the resting place it is now...I believe saved maybe a thousand or more lives. Perhaps the death toll would have bested the Titanic if it would have turned over {and totally sank}, in the deeper waters just very close to it's exposed side.  {Would that be Port side...}.

.....Yes, south of D C.....Nascar track Larry, but without nearly as good of drivers.  So it might be even more dangerous.

Good Sunday morning everyone.  After another night of going down just after 9 p.m., awoke at 2 something, and couldn't go back to sleep.  Getting kind of tired of this.  But, as it was, I was falling asleep in my chair, trying to watch History Detectives on PBS (KET here in Louisville).  And it was a pretty interesting show last night, too!  The most interesting segment was on Leon Theramon (sp?).   That was really good.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes ready on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care going to Church, work, or rail fanning, whatever you'll be doing this morning.

....29 degrees earlier.  Possible rough weather later today, but I believe we're just on the northern edge of it.

Temps will rise today.

Hope the roads are dry / bare out of the addition here.  Of course they are snow covered back in here, but have been plowed.

Church / S S runs next.   Someplace to find Sunday meal later.

We've been home since Wed.  No point going out with no desire to mess around with the slippery conditions if we didn't have to.

Warm temps today / tomorrow...should work on the bit of snow we do have....Not really that much.

Supper last night was a bit different: I heated it on Sterno stoves, and I ate by candlelight and battery-powered lantern light. We had another weather system move in, with rain, sleet, and then snow, in the early afternoon, and our power went out about 1:30. I called the power company, and was told that it was expected that the power here would be restored by 6:30 (the cause of the failure was not then known). I called again, about 7:00, was told that a utility pole had burned, and the power should be back by 11:00; it came back about 1:30 this morning--the burnt pole must have resisted efforts to get it outSmile. We have plenty of blankets, so I did not get cold (actually, the house cooled only to about the low setpoint of the thermostat).

Johnny, glad you all are all right.  Is a sterno stove anything like a propane stove?  I have cooked on one of those in the past.

Here is our Sunday Dinner menu for this afternoon/evening:

1.  Beef roast w/potatoes, carrots and onion, green beans, corn & cornbread.

2.  Fried chicken w/mashed taters, white gravy, broccoli w/cheese sauce, or any of the veggies from #1, along with homemade buttermilk biscuits.

We're supposed to make it up to 39 degrees; just wondering if we'll make it.  Also getting off and on drizzle.

Everyone have a good afternoon, take care and see you all later.

CW..  Sterno are those small cans of gelled fuel that you light and cook/warm things over.

If you go to a buffet restaurant, sometimes you will see a chaffing dish over the lit sterno cans.

Its 63 and cloudy here in Alamo City.  The fog has lifted, but I don't think we'll see any sun today.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday!  Cowboy

Snow is melting.

Have a ballgame tonight:  Pacers play the Lakers.  Yes, we do sometimes beat them.  Late start:  9:30

Good Sunday afternoon,

High here was 61F, mostly sunny with a very light wind - warm enough to have our tortoise outside for a while. Also warm enough to mow the lawn in shorts and the kids to have some outside play time.

"Sterno" (or similar fuel) is methanol mixed with some other compounds(s) (and I, at the moment, do not remember what) to give it a jelly-like form. Do NOT even taste it; it is highly poisonous--yet, people who are desperate for some kind of alcoholic beverage will put it into a sock and squeeze it to get the liquid out so they can have something to drink--at risk of damaging (as I recall) their eyesight. It is convenient in situations such as I was in yesterday, but it does take a long time to heat water for your tea (or whatever hot drink you want). Keep your Sterno stove(s) and supply of fuel where you can find them easily when you need them.

I am glad that I did not need to get our kerosene heater out (I did light one of our lamps); we bought it about 1980, and did not need it until Christmas night of 2003, when heavy snow caused great damage to the power system here; as I recall, we were without electricity for more than a day (no power to run the gas furnace blower, but we did have plenty of hot water).

Warm to today, with the high in the forties--and bright sunshine this afternoon

Murray and Johnny, thank you both for the information!  Walt saw my post later on, and  he also knows what it is;  he did some research and printed it out so I would know what it is.     He also checked to see if he had any on hand, and nada.   So, thanks to all three of you for answering my question.  Thinking back, to when I worked at KMart, we probably had cans of that in the Sporting Goods department, and I more than likely sold it to customers, without really knowing what it was.

Hopefully, we won't be needing anything like that, after later tonight, in the morning:  according to the weather reports we've heard on TV, we are to be getting some more storms, and possibly tornado watches/warnings between midnight and 6 a.m.  Yuck!!!!!  Hoping and praying that everything they are calling for, will not come to fruition.

Everyone take care, batten down the hatches, if you have to, and hopefully, will see you all in the morning.

Good Monday morning everyone.  Thankfully, all we got through the night were heavy rain, and nothing too severe, no tornadic activity, that I've heard about, so far this morning.  Current temp is 53 degrees, and the rain is moving eastward.  Temps are to be in kind of a holding pattern, and then this afternoon, will be dropping into the 40s.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend. Ours was all right, nothing special to brag about, but nothing bad happened, either.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast of bacon, eggs, oatmeal, toast is ready and on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a  good morning, take care and see you all later, hopefully, as today will be laundry day.

....All's well here.  I believe we dodged a weather bullet.  They had us in one of the possible zones to see some "weather", and all I heard was one clap of lightning / thunder sequence early this morning.  A brief bit of what sounded like very big drops of rain.

But on one of the weather radar stations earlier this morning, it showed dots on a map of some kind of hits...lots of them...{south of you C W}, and I didn't catch whether those were tornato marks or just severe hits of storms....Sure made the map look like a pin cushon.

Now, we've had times of sunshine, but currently, it's overcast and warm...50ish.

The big picture didn't show any big red lines headed our way, so I am not expecting any nasty stuff today.

Must go and pick up new glass lenses this mornng that should be ready.  Hopefully, thy will sharpen up things again.

The snow was all melted when we arose this morning.  Ground was mostly white when I went to bed rather late.  So the rain, and temp did a job on the snow.

Our Pacers did a job on the Lakers last night too.  A back and forth game during the 2nd half.  They had us as much as 13 points in the 1st half.  But the end of the 4th qtr. was ours.

Wishing a good week for all.

And now the attention turns to Florida....in we know what.

Feeling kind of brrrrr outside, with the wind blowing and gusting to around 40 mph.  Did get laundry done, although will probably have another load to do tomorrow afternoon, towels, washcloths, etc.

For the rest of of the afternoon and evening, I've warmed up the roast, carrots, taters, beans and corn.  Also made some cornbread to have with it.

And, since today is National Pie Day, according to what I heard this morning, here is our dessert menu:

1.  Apple pie

2.  Cherry pie

3.  Peach pie

4.  Chocolate pie

Everyone take care, keep warm, and I'll see you all later.

Raining here at the moment, and 45 degrees.  At least the wind the weatherguessers were predicting hasn't come to pass.

Otherwise, not much going on.

....Near 50 degrees early this morning, and now, late afternoon, we're in the mid 30's.  Still have some wind too.

Bad conditions down south overnight, but guess we here in central Indiana, lucked out....But we're going down in the 20's by morning from an earlier report I saw.

But it sure did a job on our snow....None remaining.

Peace be with you. 54 and fog in SC. Not so bad here yet, but Charlotte International has a multi hour delay and in Columbia, visibility in some places is less than 100 yards! Humidity is approaching 100%.

My phone doesn't know to act with the primary over and it has had a chance to cool down. There are several telemarketers violating the do not registry andI had to file a complaint on one this afternoon who hung up when I asked for a supervisor.

Everyone take care and stay safe

National Pie Day? I'm willing to celebrate any nation's Pie Day on a moments notice. But first I will have some of CW's roast beef first.

34° now. It finally got above freezing yesterday and it is looking even better for the rest of the week.

It's been a busy few days in RR news. Beside the wreck I mentioned earlier, CN put some cars on the ground at Hay Lakes, AB, on their Calgary-Edmonton line. And then yesterday they had some cars derail and fall off the Battle River bridge near Wainwright, AB, on their transcontinental line. I have a link with a picture. I forget the details, but that Battle River bridge is not an insignificant piece of RR architecture, either at the time of its' building, or maybe even still.

And then CP was struck with that old favourite "train hit's truck" at Oxbow, SK on the "Soo Line" from Moose Jaw to the Twin Cities. 22 cars on the ground there, but it is causing the most concern of the three because 7 cars are leaking oil. It didn't say in the report, but I suspect it was a Crude Oil unit train.

Good Tuesday morning everyone.  39 degrees here in Louisville this morning, going for a high in the mid to upper 40s this afternoon.  Should be a fairly good day, with a chance of some more rain coming in later tonight, or tomorrow.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  There's also hot water on, for our hot tea drinkers.  Breakfast is on the warmer bar.

Hope you all have a good morning, and I'll see you all later on, after I take care of Tuesday Produce.

Bruce - a train hits a vehicle and loses 5 oil tankers - full.  Usually they just crumple up the vehicle and toss it to the side.  Been watching some private e-mails from your area - you have been having a spate of bad luck on the tracks.

A couple of years ago, I saw some photos of the locomotives that derailed and slid down a steep slope - in the snow.  Scary stuff.

Darren - can I get a drink of water?

CW - blueberry, key lime, strawberry rhubarb, gooseberry or lemon meringue.....no chocolate!  Chocolate in pie is just waaay too sweet for me.  Dinner

I wonder if management types are referring to this derailment as the Oxbow incident; like the 1943 Henry Fonda movie "The Ox-Bow Incident"? I was incorrect as to the location. It is 41 miles east of the "Soo Line", on the Estevan Sub., heading into Manitoba. And another story say's there are either 6 or a single car leaking oil. You wouldn't think it would be so difficult to pin down. And all of this because the train hit a Pickup Truck.

27° right now. Looking for a high of 34° later.

S.L., or is Mr. Lion, I like the picture of the water tank.
