Just sayin hi. A pork roast with mashed potatoes & gravy with corn and bread-sticks would be good for lunch today...

Bob, that menu you suggested sure does look good, and that is exactly what we're having this afternoon, and this evening, if any of it is left.  If not, I'll find something else for our supper tonight.  So, here is the menu for everyone:

Pork roast w/mashed taters, gravy, corn and bread sticks, along with some broccoli casserole and succotash (lima beans w/corn).

Desserts:

Homemade/baked peach cobbler, Dutch apple pie, Apple cake, and snickerdoodles, fresh from the oven.

Everyone have a good afternoon, take care, and see you all later on.

Tree - maybe that is 18 feet less we will have here down below.

Went out for lunch and errands and then sat trackside and absorbed some vitamin D.  Had windows down and managed to get pink on right side of face and neck.  Imagine - in January.

61 degrees right now, but will be cold tomorrow and windy into Thursday.  More like a true January.  Grumpy

The snow, 18 feet of it, fell on a town in Alaska.

The town is Cordova, Alaska which at one time had a mining RR the CRNW -- The Copper River and Northwestern railway.  Cordova is located on an inlet of Prince William sound  ~  100 miles east of Anchorage. Now the worse problem is that they are receiving rain on top of the snow.  Cannot imagine the weight on roof beams.   100+  ## per sq foot.

Certainly, some buildings will fail with that kind of loading.  Never heard of such depth from a weather system.  I wonder, did this happen continuously until the snow accumulated 18 to 20'...!!

And in Alaska....I'd imagine they don't get much weather for any thawing before oncoming Spring....That sounds overbearing.

So much would be covered up that regurarly needs routine attention.

Difficult to understand how people will survive in that area.  18 to 20' of snow....!!  Difficult to imagine.

The weirdness of our January weather patterns seems to be wide spread.

Item:  I've seen drifted snow that deep back in the home area of Pennsylvania, back in 1958.  That caused plenty of trouble.

Never heard of such depth from a weather system.

The little town of Redfield, NY was square in the middle of a snow event a few years ago.  Over the span of about a week, they got 12 feet of snow.  Of course, they're square in the middle of the Lake Ontario snowbelt, so they're pretty well used to it.

Syracuse generally sees around 120" of snow a year, although they're substantially behind this year.

We lost the roof of our fire department social hall about 12 years ago when several days of heavy snow collected on it before we had a chance to clear it.  Several other buildings in the area collapsed as a result of the same event.  It wasn't 18', or even 8', but it was enough.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  We have light rain falling here in Louisville; it was quite heavier earlier.  Periods of heavy rain are expected for all day.  Won't turn to snow until sometime late tomorrow morning.  Still only calling for anywhere from 1/2 in. to 1 in. accumulation.  But will have winds and wind chills to contend with, also.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer/serving bar.

Going to try to get hold of my reg. dr. later this morning.  Throat is kind of achy, and not feeling too well this morning.  Everyone take care, have a good day, and keep things rolling on track here today.

Syracuse generally sees around 120" of snow a year, although they're substantially behind this year.

Lake effect snow can really pile up.  Have a niece that lives in Meadville, Pa....and they get lake effect snow there off Lake Erie.

Here....Muncie, we have an avgerage snow fall of about 25".  And so far this season we've seen only 4" here at my unofficial measuring point...Our home.  I've been keeping track of it for 5 or 6 years now, and the above is the average I have recorded.

Back in our Pennsylvania home area in 1958 we saw:  188" of the stuff....The same year my car was the one {like it}, in my Avatar.   Thinking back, I don't know how I got around, but somehow did.

If a wet heavy snowfall gets excessive, that can be a real threat {with just a couple feet of it}, to buildings and roofs.  Flat roofs especially, and the "pole barns" type of structures with the steel beams estending across the relatively flat roof as it's support.  Example:  Tennis courts...indoor....storage barns....or even businesses with these types of constructed buildings.  My 2 Cents

Good Morning Railfans!

Sorry I have been AWOL these past few days as W**K has been overwhelming my time including basically working Day and Graveyard on Monday; so no RR time for Darren. Crying

Was over 60F yesterday and it's 20F and snowing today.  Got to love the weather here as it's a constant crap-shoot and funny to watch our Weather folks try to out guess what is happening several days in-advance.

Just what we need, angry computers within the home. I hope it doesn't catch on.

26° and sunny here today.

We have been looking on with interest at the snow situation in Cordova, AK, here as well. Although I suppose the clean-up issues don't look as daunting to us, as it might to some of you. A reporter from one of the papers here was in San Francisco during the 1989 earthquake, and also in a hurricane in Florida, and noted it was very interesting watching the similarities in how Californians dealt with earthquakes, Floridians dealt with hurricanes, and Canadians dealt with shoveling out after a blizzard. There are certain tasks involved with each, and once you've done it a few times, people you would never think would have those types of skills do the tasks with remarkable efficiency. To quote the Nike ad, just do it.

No RR news today.

Bruce

Ugh.  Freezing rain.  Just happened to wake up.  Spread some salt on the driveway in case I have to get out.  Back to bed.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Verdict from Dr. yesterday:  sinus infection.  Walt went to the pharmacy and picked up an antibiotic for me.  Have had two doses already:  last night, and this morning.  Take it 3 times a day. Thought I'd be knocked out, with the antibiotic, cause that is usually the case.  But, with the drainage and coughing, hardy slept last night.  Very fitful, when I did manage to fall asleep.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, bagels, bear claws, eggs, biscuits, gravy and hash browns.

Everyone have a good day.  We are getting a light drizzle right now.  Snow is to start around 2 p.m., and they say we could see some white out conditions this evening.  You all take care, and will try to get back in later on.

Still raining and freezing, but the temps are warming - almost freezing here now.  The rain/mixed line in the radar image is working our way.

Most all of the schools are closed.  A few are toughing it out with a two hour delay.  Maybe they'll actually have school...

It's 13 above here and winds have died down from 40-45 (N) to around 22 (N).  All heading east, but relief is on the way.  By Sunday it may reach 50.  So a little dose of winter and then back to liveable again.  At least no moisture.

Figured out we should have winters like this one all the time - throw in a little cold occasionally so we remember winter and then if moisture arrives, it should be at least 40 and spring.  We don't have ski resorts, you can buy blowup snowmen and streets don't need ice for protection so no moisture needed during winter.  What's to water when it is dormant?

CW - those sinus infections are miserable.  I feel for you.

Thanks, Mook and Joe.  I am beginning to feel a little better.  Not coughing as much.  When I do, sounds kind of raspy (at least to my ears).

Here's our menu for tonight:

1.  Homemade vegetable beef soup

2.  Homemade cream of broccoli soup

3.  Homemade cream of potato soup

4.  Homemade chili:  mild and medium (if anyone wants it hot, there are containers of picante sauce, salsa, and tobasco sauce that you can add to your chili)

I'm not sure what what our current temp is, but it is ccccccold, especially with the wind blowing.  Everyone keep warm, take care and see you later.

Hmmm.  Sounds like a "cold" menu...

But good!  Have to request an addition to the soup menu, though - baked potato soup.  Even though the restaurant where I first encountered it is closed, I still get it on occasion at a well known sandwich shop.

The freezing rain seems to be over (maybe not entirely - still hearing the occasional "wires down" call).  Now it's going to get covered by lake effect snows.

I was headed for a train show on Sunday, but have a class this weekend instead.  Given the possibility I'd have had to drive right through the snow belt, that may be a good thing.

Peace be with you. 58 and cloudy in Carolina this evening. Yall's cold is bearing down on us and is gonna mess things up for the next 4 or 5 days. Thanks loads. Paula, I am glad that you are on the improve, and am thinking of you and Walt.

Turns out the vandalism was done by 4 neighborhood kids, the oldest was 12. The Sheriffs deputy put the fear of hellfire and damnation into them, not to mention the crossbar hotel. Methinks there won't be much more out of them for a while. It is actually somewhat of a relief, since we were afraid Maoist guerillas were in the early stages of storming the castle! I can demobilize for a while....

The new computer has started acting up, nothing major but a major aggravation. I expect that it will suddenly fix itself, like it did before each time it did this.

Thinking about leaving the phone off the hook, what with all the political calls we've been getting. Seems like we have heard from everybody except for Aaron Slick and Puddinhead Jones.

That's about it from the lap of luxury. Everyone take care and stay safe

Good Friday morning everyone.  A very, very cold 18 degrees F. here in Louisville this morning.  With the wind chill, feels like 3 degrees above 0.  Am I glad that I don't have to go anywhere today (at least, not that I know of!).

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider, and plenty of hot water for hot tea are all fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, eggs, bagels, bear claws, sausage, oatmeal and toast.

Tom, thanks for the well wishes!  Everyone have a good day, keep warm and take care.  See you all later.

Well the good news is that the temperatures haven't dropped yet.  Still hanging in there around freezing.

The bad news is that all I had to do to figure out what the weather outside was this morning was listen to the scanner - the roads are slick - cars off all over the place.  No injuries so far, but the tow companies will be making some money.

Hopefully I can just stay home.

Tree - I found your cartoon yesterday in Zits.  The boys found out that not only was pouring hot water on a windshield not the brightest thing to do, hosing down the driveway to get all the snow off was even worse!

Chicken - you should be warm in that big of a crowd.  Be very careful going home in the new pumpkin.

Maybe above freezing with a little sun today - which will be nice.  Weekend may make 40's both days - I can live with that.

....Finally, it looks like Winter outside.  Even with just an inch or so of snow since yesterday.  16 degrees this morning, and with wind, we all know what that feels like.

But must brave the weather within the hour and see what the Dr. will do for what I'm calling a head cold hanging on too long.

To "warm" to about 23 degrees today.  It is a lot brighter now than a short time ago.  Think we're mostly on the fringe of all the nasty snow around the Great Lakes yesterday & today.

Friday the 13th.  Hope that has no other meaning than just it's the 13th day of the month and happens to be Friday.

Finally put the two 70# sand bags in very rear of the pickup truck bed for just  a bit more traction over the rear wheels.

Generally do that sometime in early December, not needed this year.

Everyone be careful moving about today where it happens to be questionable road conditions.
