The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald....(Lightfoot)  Love that song!  Tragic words, but melody is beautiful.

Heard one the other day I hadn't heard for awhile - "Tequila".....So many good songs lost to history.  I turned off the radio and now listening to Mannheim Steamroller Christmas music.  Love it and play it every year!

Those recordings are such a nice refreshing versions of classic Christmas songs; we love 'em too.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald....(Lightfoot)  Love that song!  Tragic words, but melody is beautiful.

One thing we as railfans and railroaders can relate to when it comes to the media and other "experts".

Gordon Lightfoot sings, "they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they'd put fifteen more miles behind her". So anyway, they used one of those fancy diving rigs and found the wreck almost where Lightfoot said it would be, which was not where all the "experts" said it should be. When told of this Lightfoot said, "I didn't talk to "experts", I talked to SAILORS".

Joe - it is called landscaping....

Johnny - was just listening to the music on the radio and they played "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" (Steely Dan)....

Ask Rikki who the number belongs to....

Mookie, I'm afraid my Ricki cannot tell you; she does not recall having any number to lose.

"Rikki" sounds like a mongoose--Rudyard Kipling's "Riki-Tikki-Tavi." Does a mongoose have a number to lose?

An aside: A young man asked his date if she liked Kipling. her response was, "I don't know; how do you kipple?" Don't blame me for this; it is older than I am.

Anyhoo,,,, got our Friday Fish Fry ready and on the warmer/serving station:

Zardoz - their version of Silent Night moves me to tears every time.  It is so beautiful.

Bruce - isn't that the way!  Ask the people who do the work.  Would save everyone a lot of time and $$$$!

CW - the chocolate cake is in the garbage.  I have never eaten chocolate cake that tasted like - well, nothing.  No chocolate taste.  Frosting was the white, soft and it had no taste.  It was free - a promotion, but if they think I am going to buy that cake at $15, I got lotsa news for them.  Ugh!

Yours are much better and I don't even have to cut them!  Or do the dishes after!  Plus they are really chocolate-y.

Johnny - I am going to nominate you for the diner stand-up comedian.  I had a few giggles over your post.  I liked Rikki's name the first time you mentioned her.  That is a "cool" name.  Mongoose or no.

And, how do you kipple?  I thought she would ask what food group Kipling belongs in....

I'm outta here - got a bathroom to finish cleaning!

Moo....

Hearing of Mannheim Steamroller reminds me of the folks who have animated their Christmas lights to their music.  Always a fun search on YouTube this time of year.

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Joe, thanks for fixing breakfast.  Didn't set the alarm, and slept until 7:00 this morning.

We have 48 degrees this morning, and the sun is shining, which should help us to reach our projected high of 64 degrees this afternoon.

Mookie, of course the food in here is better!  All the desserts are made from scratch, and so is the icing.  Whatever I can fix totally from scratch, is how I cook:  that's the country girl in me.

Everyone enjoy your day, take care, keep safe and I'll see you all back in here this evening for our pizza fest:  and yes, Joe, will definitely save some pizza for you, Matt and Stacey.

Noted temp was at 39 degrees mid last evening, but went I headed to bed much later, it was 41.  And this morning it was still at 41.  We're to reach near 60 today.  Hope we do.  Have some outside yard work to finish up.  Among other things...to store, etc....Seems to be lots of bargins in our morning paper.  2 for price of 1, etc...At a major store too, Meijer's.

Afternoon all....

New truck is living up to my expectations, and then some.  Runs beautiful in the hills, pulling most of them a gear higher, though in some spots, I wish there was a 13-speed, the ability to split gears would be nice.  Last average for fuel economy was 6.8MPG, still much better than the old truck.  Cannonball, the air ride is not too bad in this one, the steer axle is leaf springs, but with the torque of that Cummins, it gets to rockin'...

At home today, dad had to work this morning, so we will go to Trainfest tomorrow, then I have to swing by work and pull out my straps that I forgot to remove yesterday (gettin' old, I guess....).  But mowed the lawn for the last time this morning, and mulched all the leaves into it.  Also went down and paid the flooring place so we can have laminate installed in our living room, that should be done by Christmas, then we can worry about our next project.....

Randy - going to stress my knowlege of trucks and ask if it is conventional or cabover.  Been on a doghouse once or twice, so that makes me really truck smart!  Smile, Wink & Grin

Cw - somewhere along the baking process, that chocolate cake we had was missing the chocolate taste.  In fact, it was missing all taste!  Ugh.

Well, we beat Penn State, but it was a bittersweet win.  Both teams played very hard and it was a good game!

Is hot chocolate comfort food?  If so, I am very comfortable right now!

Mookie, right now, at 4:21 p.m., hot chocolate is definitely comfort food:  Walt and I just came in from outside; sun now gone in behind the clouds, and the wind is picking up.  Came in very chilly, so I got one of my mugs down, filled it with chocolate milk, and zapped it in the microwave for 45 - 50  seconds.  Very niiiiice!

Here is our Saturday Night  Pizza Fest menu:

1.    Anchovie

2.    Canadian bacon

3.    Cheese

4.    Chicago style

5.    Goetta

6.    Ham & green pepper

7.    Hawaiian

8.    Italian sausage

9.    Pepperoni/mushroom

10.  Supreme

No dessert pizzas for tonight:  thought about 8:30, 9:00, I'd pop some popcorn, and we can all have some popcorn this evening, with your choice of hot chocolate or hot cider.

Mookie:  Conventional, I know of only one maker that still builds cabovers, Peterbilt, and that is by special order only.  Kind of a shame, some places in the east could use cabovers, space is so tight!!

Randy.....

Have a different question about trucking....

I realize you are of a much younger generation.  I just wonder if in all your travels, and conversations with "truckers" in many situations if you have ever heard anyone mention a trucking Company named: Horton....?  Trucks were orange and black...Mostly orange trailers, and towards the last the trailers were of stainless steel in appearance.

They were  a first class looking group of rigs running up to at least WWII.  Our location of observation was in the east on route 30 in western Pennsylvania...Specifically, Somerset Co.

The drivers even wore uniforms.  I have hunted in all ways I know on here to find some info...Something about them, the company, etc....Have found just one photo of a semi with "Horton" image on the trailer....Don't know if it was of what I remember seeing or not....A black and white pic.

Our place of observation, specifically, was on route 30 at Stoystown, Pa...Family had a Standard Oil Service Station {new in '38}, Esso.

Good Sunday morning everyone.  Temp in the upper 50s this morning, but the wind is really blowing outside, making it very cool and chilly out.

Mookie, congrats on Nebraska's win yesterday.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are freshly made and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bacon, sausage and pancakes.  Plenty of maple syrup and blueberry syrup to go on the pancakes.

Going to start working on Sunday Dinner in about an hour:  Roast, taters, carrots, cole slaw, garden salad, and your choice of green beans, broccoli w/cheddar cheese sauce and your choice of dinner rolls or baked cornbread.

Hope you all have a good morning, keep safe going to Church, work or railfanning this morning.

Thanx - CW.  It was a hard-fought game on both sides and a nice plus for us.  However, I am still torn over whether the game should have even been played or not.  Even our Coach said he wasn't for playing the game.  Such a sad time.  I hope something good comes out of it.

But our fans all said (so far) that Penn State treated them well and that pleases all of Nebraska.  We try to make all our guests feel welcome to our state and games and hope they will reciprocate.  Most do.

On that note....think I will go take a nap in the hammock.  I have been a busy citizen today and need to check my eyelids for holes for awhile.

Mook, the next time you make a chocolate cake, I have a suggestion for some really scrumptious frosting:

mix together well :

1# of softened unsalted Irish butter
2 cups confectioners sugar
1/4 cup cocoa

This recipie makes such a light and tasty frosting, that, once tried, you will never go back to the lardy-tasting frosting you get from the store.

Zardoz - my doctor just had a coronary!  Broken Heart

I don't think I have ever heard of Irish Butter.  And the cocoa taste is good in all chocolates!

I almost ordered the cake w/o frosting - and they didn't offer a raspberry frosting, but with or w/o - it all tasted like the box.

Zardoz, I'm gonna try your recipe:  as soon as I can find some unsalted Irish butter!!  If I can't find that, could I substitute Land of Lakes unsalted organic butter?

Our Sunday Dinner is now ready, and on the warmer/serving station:

The roast, taters and carrots, other veggies are just waitin' for you all to dig in!

Dessert today:  Freshly baked and frosted chocolate cake w/whatever flavor ice cream you want, and a fresh-from-the-oven peachcobbler and Dutch apple pie.

We are currently at 66 degrees (high today is projected to be 67), but very cloudy/overcast skies, with winds 25 to 35 mph, gusting to 40 mph.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, take care, keep safe and see you all later.

Good evening. I just finished looking at the 11:00 news and found a bit of RR news. It seems CP wants to put up a chain link fence to stop dog walkers, fishermen, kids, and other pedestrians from crossing the mainline to get access to the north bank of the Bow River. Not really earth shaking and I suspect it will get resolved to everyone's satisfaction, but I thought it noteworthy for one thing, Calgary is getting so big that this issue is happening 14 miles west of the old CPR station site. I've got to say, I didn't see that one coming.

32° now, dropping to 25° with a chance of flurries later tonight.

Good Monday morning everyone.  Partly cloudy with a temp of 67 degrees here in Louisville this morning.  Supposed to get back up into the low 70s today. Also supposed to get some rain sometime this afternoon; could be some heavy downpours, too.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are freshly made and ready to go.  And on the warmer/serving station this a.m.:  bacon, sausage, eggs, bagels, bear claws, oatmeal, toast.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and see you all later.

....A new week, good morning to all.  Wind has finally moved on.  Warm temps this morning above normal....Mid 60's now.

Early this morning {still dark}, we had a line of weather pass here {I didn't hear it}, but checking the rain gauge, we received 1.85" of rain in a short time.  Water across the street, which I have not seen in perhaps years.

Believe there is a threat of another weather mess to pass by us sometime later today.  Right now, it's bright with the sun breaking thru at times.

I thought I was finished mowing....but if it keeps up with sunshine and some warm days.....I will have to uncover the tractor in the little barn and make another run over the yard....Kind of unusual for this time of year.  It is very pretty bright green still...!

Mooks;

Batten down the hatches. A couple hundred thousand tumbleweeds are headed your way at high speed. Trucks blown over and blizzard warnings in the high country. We've got winds sustained at 40+ MPH with gusts in places up to 115MPH. The highway department lost lots of signs in the past few days and windmill blades bent past the point of no return.

Might put wings or a sail on the SUV this weekend for the trip east.

We can't have Colorado tumbleweeds mixing with Nebraska tumbleweeds!  They make Kansas ones!

Sounds like we may have wind from the good old days.  Grumpy  We have gotten pretty boring here in the last 25 years!  Actually, 40 is more normal.  Above that it is a disturbance.

No rain yet for us, either, Joe.  But should be here sometime this evening.  Looks like Walt and I will get very wet in the morning, going to the hospital.

Joe, there are always leftovers in containers, marked for you in the fridge.  Always have your name on the containers, listed with what is inside.

And for this afternoon and tonight, there's leftover roast, taters, carrots, and other leftovers from yesterday's Sunday Dinner menu.

Guess this will be the last you see/hear from me, until either late tomorrow, or probably Wednesday morning.  Ride will be here to pick up Walt and me, about 6:30 in the morning.  (One of those "O dark 30 numbers.)  Everyone take care of yourselves, and take care.
