Rain...! That's what we need here, but please without the storms.
So dry.
Quentin
We actually had a line of storms move through San Antonio yesterday afternon. We received some much needed rain!
.....Yep, it did it. 100.2 degrees here at 5:35 this afternoon.
Like walking out into an oven. Took a pic of the instrument at that reading. That is probably a record for here on this date.
CW, after a busy day I think I will relax and enjoy a tuna salad and a sundae for desert.
We are definitely bucking this North American heat wave like a bronc down at Stampede Park. It only got up to 68° today and it is not expected to get above 70° until Saturday. The 23 mph wind from the mountains to the west has something to do with that.
My computer is still not working properly since last nights shutdown. I can't smoothly play any streaming video. It is like something has slowed down my connection speed. Most other sites I visit including this one seem to be loading OK.
Now it is time to enjoy my evening. Hope everyone else enjoys theirs too.

..........99.1 degrees now at 4:44........High humidity. Just stepped outside and it truely seems like stepping into an oven. Believe we will inch up a few more notches yet. Max is about 5 or 5:30.
Joe, I like your idea for our meal; so salads it it:
1. Tuna salad, garden,Caesar, chicken, turkey; for dessert, we'll have sugar cookies and more ice cream homemade sundaes, floats, and the novelty ice creams.
Take care, have a cool, safe afternoon.

Bruce - Our Smarties are about the size of a fountain pen (in diameter) and have a slight tartness to them. There's no filling - in fact, the center is concave. They're still available.
We're under a high heat advisory today. The airport is showing 84F (65% RH), my weather station (which lies on sunny days in the afternoon) has 90F. Despite no A/C, the house is currently at 80F, but it'll hang on to that well into the night.
Back to my projects for the day. I've finished two so far, and have four more on the list.

Had lunch under the overpass at our favorite Xing. Doing MOW work on the tracks. They looked plenty warm. No shade around rr tracks for workers!
Joe - I got a WB from you UCEX passing thru and sent you an EB - Well, it has lime green on the rotary ends and looks like a leasing company cleaned out their closets. It is a mixture of FSTX, JSCX, WSCX NSTX, PSTX and CPOX.
If you happen to be close by, you will know right away!
95 and 50% here right now. They say moisture overnite (HA - from where? Sprinklers?) and cooler tomorrow - only around 90-95 but no doubt with sprinklers and cooler, the humidity will be around 60%. Never fails.
Oh well, I am still more comfy with this weather than zero and below. I don't generate much heat any more, so staying warm means blankets stacked next to puter!

I've never thought of Smarties and M&M's as the same thing:
Unless it's a local nickname.

WOW!! We really are talking apples and oranges here. That roll of Smarties looks like a roll of Life Savers.
Canadian Smarties look just like the M&M's in your second photo. Just made with a different tasting recipe. The idea for both probably started at the same time, but there may have been a local taste preference.
CW, my afternoon was not unlike your evening. I had to shut down my computer about 3:30 when it got really dark and your could tell we were going to get hit with a bad thunder storm. For the first time in a couple of summers one passed right over me, and they came in waves until around 11:00. Then when I tried to boot up my computer I couldn't connect to the internet.
It was too late to work on it then so I finally got it working this morning. I eventually ran a troubleshooter and it said it had to refresh some of my settings. Which was weird because I never tweaked them in the first place. So I guess I will proceed onward in blissful ignorance.
61° now with a high of 68° and a risk of thundershowers later. There is still lots of standing water around from yesterday, so it is humid, but I'm not sure it will get warm enough to trigger a storm.
No new RR news.
Hopefully everything will continue working on my end and I can get caught up on my other tasks.
Good Wednesday afternoon, folks! We have been without power, until just about an hour ago, since 11:40 last night. Big ole thunderstorm, with winds blowing 35, 40 mph+ per hour, did a big number in the West End of Louisville. The three of us went out on the front porch, and basically stayed outside until about 3 a.m., just so we could keep cool. Plenty of heat lightning, after the storm passed over. Sarah went to the RR Yard to get ice, so we wouldn't lose too much food in the fridge/freezer.
Everyone have a good afternoon, keep as cool as possible, and see you all later on.
Good morning and peace be with you. 74 and clear in Carolina this mornng, headed for 100+. Nuff said about that.
I have been up most of the night ebaying the coin dept. The govt here has no use for collectng and I get some long winded speeches at times, but I have fun looking at them goodies that I generally can't afford anyway. Coins are like trains. They are habit forming...
Everyone take care and stay as cool as possible.

Mookie and Larry, I love your ideas for lunch/supper tonight. Just the tickets to help us all cool down! And that is exactly what is on the menu tonight: Got a couple of electric ice cream makers going, along with a couple of "hand crank" ice cream makers, so we should have plenty of ice cream. And there's plenty of root beer for root beer floats and Dr. Pepper for Dr. Pepper floats also. I believe there's even a couple of really large watermelons in a big metal tub filled with ice, getting nice and cold.
AgentKid And before he was married, the actor Michael J. Fox used to have his mother send boxes of Smarties to him in Los Angeles. Smarties and M&M's are basically the same thing.
....A note on local railroad spur to connect our Park One, Industrial Park at Muncie. Located at I-69 & route 332, just west of Muncie.
Brevini, the company preparing to manufacture gear sets for power producing wind mills has been in the works now for several years.
Finally, our morning paper shows the necessary concerns, County....N S Railroad....and other necessary signers, etc....have finally signed on to now allow the approx. one plus mile of railroad spur to be constructed from the Frankfort line {nearby} to the Industrail Park.
The line will serve other businesses in the Park as well.
But Brevini needs it to transport the gear sets that will be manufactured at their new plant, which has been mostly completed.
This project has been struggling for several years now. Now, hopefully....the spur construction can proceed. Hopefully, quickly.
Mookie How about an ice cream social this afternoon - old-fashioned ice cream sodas (not pop) and root beer floats..
How about an ice cream social this afternoon - old-fashioned ice cream sodas (not pop) and root beer floats..
That sounds like great fun. I was never big on floats, but I love sundae's and banana splits.
Larry talking about his favourite Ginger Ale, reminds me of a story about a Canadian who had moved down to the Chicago area. He could not find a brand of Potato Chips made in the US that he liked, so he used to drive back up to Winnipeg and come back over the border with a carload of Old Dutch brand chips in various flavours. And before he was married, the actor Michael J. Fox used to have his mother send boxes of Smarties to him in Los Angeles. Smarties and M&M's are basically the same thing. I see now from TV commercials that you folks have Caramilk and OH Henry chocolate bars. Were I younger, that news would have lessened my reluctance to move to the US.
The big North American heat wave is trying to happen here, but it can't quite pull it off. The thunder storm warning we received yesterday morning was cancelled by 3:30, and although we received another warning this morning at 10:47, I don't see anything happening. We never made it to our forecasted high yesterday, and it is only 70° right now with a high if 77° predicted. So, compared to what I see on the TV, we are getting off lucky.
No new RR news today. Everyone stay cool.
Mookie Tree - have you tried G2 for hydration? My internist recommends it. Keeps you from getting leg cramps, too! (and it is cheap!)

Oh, yeah - and it does work well. In the fire service, it's been recommended that FF's entering rehab (rest and recovery) on days like today drink one sports drink and two waters. On the railroad, I find that a bottle or two of water (with G2 thrown in there somewhere) every trip seems to keep me in balance.
Stuff with more exertion (like switching cars) warrants a little more.
Sometimes I'll mix a packet of flavoring into a bottle of water for a change of pace, especially if I'm just "sipping."
The key at all times is to ensure that your urine remains mostly light colored. If it's the color of tea, you need fluids, and now. The same is true if you haven't had to answer a call of nature for a while, ie, longer than normal.
...So the heat wave continues. First look at the instrument this morning showed: 82.2...! That's a warm start.
Upon going to bed last night at about 12:45 our instrument showed to be still at 85.2 degrees....!! A high for this season.
Still dry here.
And Boston Coolers (floats made with Vernor's ginger ale)!!!
Methinks a nice selection of salads and cold cuts would be the choice for lunch.
Not as hot here as in Mookieland, but it's still enough to get your attention.
One thing I don't like about hot weather is the requisite constant consumption of liquids. After a while I get tired of drinking water (and other stuff for that matter). I try to stay away from soda as it really doesn't absorb into the body all that fast and has lots of calories (and I don't do diet).
Had McD's in the park this morning at 7 am. In the shade, it was nice. But temp now @ 9:30 is 85 with 61% -
How about an ice cream social this afternoon - old-fashioned ice cream sodas (not pop) and root beer floats...Maybe popcorn to go with them? Yum....Somehow the new freezes and whatevers just aren't the same.
Tall glasses and long spoons....
Ah.
morning
rain went around us.co-worker said he had 1 1/2 iches in his rain guage.another warm day today.Cw thanks for breakfast.time for bed.chores later.
Good Tuesday morning everyone. Very warm this morning, with a temp in the low 80s (think I saw the temp listed at 84 degrees at 5:00 this morning). High will be up in the mid to upper 90s. yuck!
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station this morning: bacon, eggs, sausage, bagels, bear claws, cantaloupe, watermelon, kiwi, papaya, strawberries, blueberries, and some fresh from the tree cherries.
Ended up getting a skeeter bite last night, when Walt and I went out to water the flowers. Hate skeeter bites with a passion! The dang critter must have gotten up in the shorts, as the bite (and itching) is right on the outside of my upper thigh. Oh well, life happens, doesn't it.
Everyone stay as cool as possible, keep hydrated, and I'll see you all later, after I get through with Tuesday Produce/Bread Truck.
.....No change. 95.9 as our high here today. Bone dry. Possible chance of thunderboomers, but it at best, would be spotted around the State.
Have not mowed for over a week. Seems to be lasting better than neighbors who had mowed real short. So, since it's not growing much now, I'll try to leave it alone until we get some rain. And it was just fertlized again last week.
Did manage a bit more of shrub trimming early this morning before it really got hot...It was humid and I couldn't work very long, but did get two more finished.
larry thanks for the story.a few grumbles of thunder but no rain.time to get ready for work.
mudchicken Ban Syracuse?
Ban Syracuse?
Not that I have anything against the people of Syracuse, it is just a funny looking word.
75° now, with a high of 84°. But as the weatherman noted; our winter ran so long and was then followed by a wet spring, there is so much moisture in the ground we received a thunder and hail storm watch by 10:30 this morning.
As to GPS devices, I think low height bridges attract them like iron shavings are attracted to a magnet. We have a low bridge here in Calgary. The road runs under the east/west CPR mainline between the Elbow River and the east throat of the old Industrial Yard. The road runs parallel to the Elbow River and ran to the original industrial area of Calgary. After WWII the industries moved out to more truck friendly industrial parks, and the road fell into disuse. When the streets of Calgary outside of the downtown core were being paved with asphalt, that road only rated a tar covering over the gravel.
By the end of the '60's going through there was like driving through "The Land That Time Forgot". In the '90's some businesses opened up there and the underpass was rehabbed and repaved. But because the road ran beside the Elbow River they couldn't dig the road down any deeper without running into water table issues. And when it comes to raising the tracks in that location the phrase "absurd amount of money" springs to mind.
About this time GPS devices came on the scene, and they were leading all sorts of tall vehicles to become wedged under that bridge. Mini-buses, cube vans, step vans, truck campers, and every other type of truck up to semi-trailers, were jammed in under there. I don't know if GPS units got smarter, or it just happened so often it was no longer news worthy, but it must be five years since I heard of it happening.
No new RR news at the moment, but these thunder storm watches concern me, what with their potential to precipitate flooding.
Everyone have a good day.
Well, got our laundry done, before the temp and head index started getting really bad. Now, I can 'relax' for the rest of the afternoon.
For the rest of today, here is the menu:
1. Vichyssoise soup
2. Tuna salad sandwiches
3. Eye of round steaks w/diced tomatoes and mixed vegetables, fixed in the Crock Pot
Desserts: Your choice of ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, or apple cobbler w/ice cream (Anybody catching the "theme" for today's meals?
Mookie Gotta ban bridges.....
