Good Morning. We have our first rain of 2011. With all the snow still on the ground I'm not sure that is the best idea Mother Nature ever had. So far though, there have been no problems reported that have made the news. 36° right now, with a high of 43° this afternoon. I see where there is a chance this will turn back into wet snow overnight.

No recent RR related news to report.

Afternoon all.  Well, the therapist thinks my problem is coming from my hips.  He gave me a few exercises to start with, (easy ones), to do once a day.  I'll start doing them this evening.

It feels really nice outside, even though it's on the breezy side.  Believe our current temp is 59 degrees.

For supper tonight, I've fixed some sub (hoagie) sandwiches:  turkey, tuna, chicken, roast beef.  Have some tater chips and salad to go with them.

Hope everyone has had a good day.  You all take care, have a good evening, and see you all later.

Good evening all!

Our temp is right around 57*F right now. What a beautiful evening.

CW: Thanks for the subs! They sure are good!

I may join the golf team at school although I’m not really good at it.

Have a good evening all!

Good Thursday morning everyone and Top of the Mornin' to you all!  45 degrees with fair skies this morning.  Going for a high in the mid 70s today.  Hope everyone had a good night's sleep (except for Joe, who is probably still at work).

Coffee, juices, and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station:  bagels, bear claws, bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits, gravy, grits, fried taters.

Well, guys and gals, the March Madness is under way.  The Ky. Wildcats are to tip off this afternoon at 2:45 in Tampa.  Already have on my team colors.  And I hope the Louisville Cardinals behave themselves out in Colorado.

And Happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all.  You'll find some shamrock shaped cookies on the counter, with green icing on them.  And I've already started our lunch/dinner menus:  corned beef & cabbage and Irish stew.

If anyone has another favorite Irish dish (and I don't mean green beer), let me know and I'll get that going also.

Whoooeeeee!  Skating rink here this morning!  And it was just frost on the roads - no freezing rain or anything like that.  The early rush kept police and fire busy all through the county, including a goodly number of "rollovers."

Fortunately, any injuries (and there were only a few) were minor.

Got my fingers crossed for 'Cuse.  They didn't win their conference, but maybe they'll get a berth anyhow...

I'll have my tea on the veranda.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone.

34° here now with a high of 43° later. Yesterday's precipitation didn't amount to much and there is more of the same expected today. Just a trace.

March 17, 1999 was the date of one of the largest snowfalls ever received in one day here, and the newscasts later today will no doubt not let us forget it. It was a huge dump of heavy wet spring snow that came down in less than 12 hours if I remember correctly. It made getting home from wherever you were that afternoon dreadful and kept most of us at home the following day.

Joe, I saw a commercial on the TV for the first time last night that reminded me of you coin toss method. It was for a Canadian bank and this couple was renewing their mortgage. They were trying to decide if they should pick a variable or fixed rate mortgage and they were flipping a coin. Every time they flipped the coin it landed on its' edge! No heads or tails. It will no doubt still be funny the next few times I see it. I thought to myself I bet you were glad you didn't have a coin like that when you were trying to make your picks.

As to the games themselves, I don't know one end of a basketball from the other, so I will stand clear and let this event roll on by.

No new local RR news that I can see.

CW. the St. Paddy's day menu sounds great.

Seventies out here on the Colorado prairie (range fires, front range up around Lefthand Canyon in Boulder is smoldering) and heavy snow in the western mountains.....go figure.

Wheat farmers here praying for some rain to escape da hills and soak the ground. Won't be much of a winter wheat havest otherwise. Not green on St. Pats here.

Ma fox won't visit the yard for a while - Furry track meet here last night. Two laps around the yard and then over the cedar fence. Scotties don't do steeplechase.

One up, one down.

A long-awaited cell tower now pierces the sky just over the hill - the antennas are within view of my house (except for a couple of pine trees in the way).  Once it comes on line, I'll be able to talk on my cell phone right here at my house!  Might upgrade to a smart phone then, too...

The house two down from mine that burned at the beginning of January is now a pile of rubble, with much of it already hauled to the landfill.  Apparently the family that lived there isn't going to rebuild there, so we may be stuck with an empty lot for a while.

While I was out checking out the new tower I noted smoke, so I checked that out.  One of our Amish families was burning some brush.  Normally that wouldn't be a big deal, but there's a statewide burn ban on from March 15 to May 15.  Apparently they hadn't heard of it.  They have now.

County fire association dinner meeting tonight.  Time to start getting ready.

Yeah, Joe, Walt is decidedly happy right now:  his alma mater, Morehead, is the school that took down U of L.  And I'm happy as well, since Kentucky beat Princeton!

Got some more corned beef brisket and cabbage ready for tonight.

Our high so far, is 77 degrees.  Still quite breezy, but it is comfortable outside.  You all have a good evening, and take care.

Evening all.....

Was 75-77 on the mirror when I shot through Louisville on I-64 at 3:33EDT, about 68 here in Haubstadt, IN, now.  Had some morning valley fog as I rolled through West Virginia this morning, apparently it was enough to cause a four-wheeler to do aerobatics in the westbound lanes near Charleston, how that car wound up on it's roof at a 90-degree angle while still staying inside the jersey barriers, I have no idea.

Just finished dinner, a can of soup heated up in my lunchbox oven.  Have been using it quite a bit lately, trying to save money and eat healthier, and it is helping out.  Only downside to it is it takes about 40 minutes to prep dinner, but I'm in no hurry tonight......

Off to bed, then St Louis in the morning, then am pointing the rig towards Atlanta.....

See everyone later.....

Good Friday morning everyone.  Randy, glad you could stop in last night.  I believe that I heard last night, on the late weather, that the temp actually  made it to 79 yesterday.  Not going to be that warm today:  65 now, and we may see a high of 69, 70 degrees.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  bagels, English muffins, bear claws, bacon, eggs, toast and jelly/jam/preserves/marmalade.

Take care, you all, and have a nice morning.

.....Another nice morning.  Sunshine and light clouds.  Perhaps not quite as warm as yesterday, but still very nice.

Green things are starting to make themselves seen....A new presence.  A few days like these last 2 days, and leaves will be bursting thru.  Lawn people put down first installment of fertlizer on the lawn yesterday...

Again, with nearby friend and son, we've made arrangements to go in with them to rent a lawn roller, and get our lawns rolled.

Wish I had more space in my little barn to store one that can be purchased to pull behind a lawn tractor....They weigh in the area of 6 to 700 lbs.  That's one 36 X 24" and filled with water.  They are easy to pull as I've done it in the past with a borrowed one.

Tulips are up and growing.

Q: Gotta aerate the lawn twice a year here (spring/fall) or the ground gets so hard that nothing grows or holds water. (The clay and lack of topsoil makes it like growing grass on brick)

Whilst I'm making the yard look like swiss cheese, the dogs go nuts sniffing EVERY sod plug.

Got snow this morning, about 2 inches on the grass, 60 degrees by this afternoon.

My yard is mostly clay.  I try not to have to dig it up much.  If it's wet, I end up with "elevator shoes."  If it's dry, I need a pick to get through it.  Along about August each year I can count on finding cracks...

A windy 50 here today.  Winds are brisk, to say the least.

Good afternoon. 37° and sunny today. No exciting weather news, no new rail news. A surprisingly boring day, yet not at all unpleasant.

I have been spending the past week reading a history of the Brooks, AB area as told by the local newspaper, The Brooks Bulletin. "Mile 723 - Brooks - A Railstop Turns 100". What started out as a stock loading pen and a boarding house for cowboys, is now a major centre in Alberta. My mom's parents moved to the area 90 years ago this year, and I have found the whole book quite interesting. While far from being a railway book, the CPR has played an important role in Brooks history.

When the CPR realized the land was to arid to just break up the ranch land and sell it to homesteaders they built an irrigation system. This system became the Eastern Irrigation District, serving an area roughly equal in size to the Canadian Province of Prince Edward Island. The Canadian Pacific Railway - Department of Natural Resources was run remarkably similar to the railway. Instead of Superintendents and Road Masters, you had Superintendents and Water Masters. And you had matching houses scattered around the countryside, just like railway stations without freight sheds. And the CPR - DNR HQ yard buildings didn't look all that different from small CPR Division Point facilities. My grandfather worked for the CPR - DNR from 1921 until the EID was formed in 1935, and he took his CPR pension payout and went farming.

The CPR transcontinental line from Medicine Hat to Calgary is known as the Brooks Sub.

The book has been an interesting diversion from my usual RR reading, but not that much of a diversion.

No exciting weather news

I should never have said that! I subscribe to a text notification service from The Weather Network. Our version of The Weather Channel. I posted that message at 2:56 MDT and at 3:37 MDT while I was out grocery shopping I get a text message of a Snowfall Warning for Saturday afternoon!

I should never have said that!

There is a wisdom in emergency services - never say the "Q" word.  Call us superstitious, but I've had several times when someone uttered it and we were headed for a call shortly thereafter....

Woke up to unexpected thunder early this AM - checked the radar and also found an advisory for some wind and thunder.  It came down from our neighbors to the north.  We tend to be a bit leary on that - the last major wind event we had snuck in across the St Lawrence River.

Bruce - like Mudchicken said - kind of like a train - expect snow anytime, any place up until May 15 here in the true midwest.  Aggrevating, isn't it.

I have been suffering from incredible spring fever.  Also a nagging cough and the feet/nose mixup.  I did finally get the nose to stop running, but the cof lingers.  It really saps my energy.

Have been struggling out, tho - keep going trackside, but have seen nothing even worth mentioning.

I smile when I read that you all are struggling with lawns.  Landlord put our entire backyard into concrete for parking and  has the neighborhood's nicest looking lawn out front.  It is his passion, and it looks incredible all thru the warm months.  (All clay, too)  If it were mine, I think I would put it into concrete, rather than spend all that time on it.

Randy - cool.  This summer, you can write about your grass!  Smile, Wink & Grin

CW - I would like crab salad and club crackers tomorrow for lunch, if you please.  It is my favorite warm weather dish and we have been having some very nice lukewarm weather.  Along with chocolate cake & cold milk, of course!

Sir C - how is the Gus dude doing?

Tree - watching the owls and the kestrels both.  They all have that same round look and fluffy feathers, so thinking the kestrels are the day birds and then during the nite, they put on the owl outfits and continue the mouse chase.  (Hear the female owl singing for her mate right now)  Off to do some window peeking.....

We have had snow promised in the valley two three times in the past week, but what did fall did not last long. The mountains have received more, and the nowpack around here is about 140% of normal, so we may be able to bathe this summer without worrying.

I saw a robin in the front yard this morning, and the hyacinths by the front door have come out of the ground and promise many blooms (from the number of buds that are visible). Lows are in the high thirties, and the highs get into the fifties.

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Sorry I didn't make it back in yesterday.  Decided to take a bus ride, and do a little bit of window shopping.  Did end up buying a couple of items, but that was about it.  Just enjoyed being out.  Missed all the rain we got, as where I was, there wasn't a drop of rain.  When I got home, the streets were all as wet as could be.

Mookie, I'll have your crab salad and club crackers ready for you right at noon, is that all right?

Meanwhile, coffee, juices and Saturday brunch menu are all fresh and ready to go.

48 degrees and mostly cloudy skies at 7:51 a.m.  Supposed to see a high of about 64 degrees for today.  Yesterday, got into the mid to upper 70s before the rain came into the area.

Going to watch UK play at 12:15 this afternoon.  Will be back later to fix the pizzas for our Saturday Night Pizza Fest.  Everyone have a good day and take care.

....A nice Sunny Saturday morning here.  A bit cooler this morning than it's been recently, but still nice.  Grass is growing.  Still believe the John Deere and I will be mowing grass yet, this month.

Have a brand new seat assy. to install on it....So, we'll be riding on "new" again.  John Deere stuff sure is "salty", pricewise.  But can't complain, as it's been a good tractor.

Golfers have been busy on the golf course behind us, for some time now....

Was just taking a peek over on the hotel cam in Roanoke, and witnessed two WB trains passing side by side.  Sun shining there too.

Guess we're to see a "bigger....closer" moon today.  Brighter too, so if it's clear then, we'll check it out.  And how about tomorrow....Spring...!

A light dusting of snow this AM, but nothing significant - just enough so you knew it snowed.

Clear this afternoon, but cool - in the low 30's.  Doesn't look like the week ahead is going to be too bad - typical March stuff for this area.

The bulb garden (tulips, lillies, daffodils) is starting to show signs of life.  Kind of a pain this year, though, as I need to strip the paint off the front of the sun porch, which is behind the bulb garden...

Back to projects.
