Quentin, that's good news about Jean--that she is doing well and no longer needs the cast.

Today, I remembered a comment concerning heavy rains that I heard from one of the men on the Building & Ground Crew at college: "it's the sort of rain that ruins little potatoes--it makes big potatoes of them."

We are thankful that we have never worried about high ground water by our house. There is an irrigation canal the other side of the schoolyard that is behind our house, but it is downhill from here all the way to the canal.

Johnny....Yes, she was very glad to have it removed.  She does have a short support piece, that is fastened by velcro....but doesn't have to wear it all the time....Just use her own judgement.

Quentin - glad she's doing well.  Just got an update on one of my aunts who recently had a shoulder replacement.  She's home now, and is apparently doing OK.  Not bad for 80-ish.

The furnace kicked on just fine, so I'm not relying on space heaters any more.  It means the house will be nice and cozy tonight, as the space heaters weren't quite keeping up.

We ended up on another pump detail tonight.  Hopefully that chapter is closed now, as I'm not hearing any more dispatches now.  Some areas are still seeing significant snow (it's just missing us).

Big excitement on the mill pond here today - the ice broke up in the high water on the creek and created an ice dam.  The water was about as high as anyone had seen it before the highway folks were able to break the ice up and clear the jam.  Still ripping along pretty good.

Good Monday morning everyone.  Cloudy and 35 degrees here in Louisville this morning.  High for today should reach about 50 degrees.  But at least the rain is out of here.  Now, all we have to do is worry about the possibility of the Ohio going over flood stage tomorrow morning.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  bacon, sausage, eggs, toast (white, wheat and rye), biscuits, gravy, and some grape jelly to go on the toast or biscuits.

I was sitting here at the computer, looking out the front door, and guess what I saw in the Church parking lot across the street:  a little gray bunny rabbit!!  He would do a couple of little hops, sit about a minute or two, hop a little more, then he hopped out of sight.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and talk with you all later.

....Thanks to all who commented of Jean's good healing and able to get rid of cast.  She has been bothered by back pain {from about the same time as the fall}, and we've been to Dr's. about that, and even an open sided MRI, and we've just received word this morning, it showed no back trouble.  I believe the fall did have something to do with the back trouble....Perhaps strain of some kind.

And the last few days she does feel better with less pain from that.

So we're thankful.  Now we're headed to my Dermi in this hour to fight the continuing problem to get the spot he removed from my ear a couple weeks ago {to heal}.....Hopefully, we're gaining on this "suff".

Water was flowing pretty high through White River yesterday here in Muncie.....and it appears the area is in pretty good shape now....Until the next downpour.  It's the area in southern Indiana who are still in trouble from all the runoff.  Including what has flowed thru here....

Mild temps today and it's pretty bright now..Overcast, but believe the sun will peek thru.  No snow now for a week or so.  In fact, just turned around here at my "station", and noted our last mearurable was 2 / 25.

Spring is on it's way.  Actual temp now:  36.1 and rising.

Light snow here in Denver, expecting 6-8" by Tuesday night, then sixties for the rest of the week.

Staggered back into town this weekend after a week in Washington state. I think the snow chased us home.

Brought Gus home from the vet (finally) and re-united him with the rest of 'Da Boyz on Sunday. He is healing well (infection gone and incisions healing). He does look a bit odd with his shaved rear leg sticking out of the remaining big ball of black fur. He is well enough that the four-letter b-word has been discussed for him, Nigel and Doogie. (Consternation in the scottie camp!)

Mudchicken, congrats on having Gus back home.  Hope you enjoyed your 'trip'.  And I'll be sure to give your message to the Mutt.  He's a little bit under the weather today; woke up kind of sick at his stomach this morning, now that is better, but has a very bad headache.

Late lunch/dinner menu for today:

1.  Leftover beef stew and cornbread from yesterday

2.  Grilled chicken breasts w/mashed taters and cream of chicken soup to go over the chicken, green beans, or lima beans w/corn, and homemade buttermilk biscuits.

Went back to the regular doctor this morning:  got the results back from my blood work Thursday.  Triclyserides (sp?) are not too good:  172.  Overall cholesterol is 217.  They gave me some papers showing exactly what I can have to eat that will help get my cholesterol down, where it should be, or even lower.

Then, tomorrow afternoon, I go back to my orthopedist.  Since Friday, I've had a lot of pain in my right knee (that one that was operated on several years ago).   Looks like I'm gonna have a very long day tomorrow, what with Produce and Bread/Pastry trucks in the morning, then come home to get ready to go to the doctor's office.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, take care and see you sometime later.

Hmm, Interesting! Can't say that we have seen extra BNSF units around here that would account for the NS units out there---there has however been an influx of UP sightings around here.

Good Tuesday morning everyone.  Slept fairly well last night.  Hope you all did also.  39 degrees here in Louisville this morning, with fair skies.  Supposed to make it up to 59, 60 degrees for a high today.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Mudchicken, I even have some hot cider this morning, if'n you need it to warm your insides this morning.  And, of course, there's always plenty of hot water for our hot tea drinkers.

On the serving station this morning:  bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, biscuits & gravy, bagels and bear claws.

I've also put on a couple of Crock Pots with vegetable beef soup in them, for your lunch this afternoon.  I probably won't be back here until after 5 p.m., so wishing you all a beautiful day.  Take care!

Well, time to go back to work, headed back out in a little while after cleaning up and packing up.  Got everything related to the house on track to close by March 31st, then moving can begin.  Gonna be a busy April....

Going to be cloudy here, with rain later tonight, temps are supposed to stay warm enough to keep it as rain.  Getting tired of winter, will be happy to see warmer temps and less precip.  In my 31 years, this is the worst winter I have ever seen for the entire US.....

See everyone later....

Randy - Syracuse has reached it's fourth highest snowfall for the season - and there's still time for more snow.  They're at 173.5" for the season so far, about a foot and a half short of an all time record (currently 192.1").

For those doing the math, that's fourteen and a half feet of the white stuff.

For the record, the snow is measured periodically through the day, with the last few hours added to the total.  Because the snow compresses under its own weight, the end result of a two foot storm might only measure 18" the next day.  And thaws can drastically reduce the height of the snowpack.  So don't go to Syracuse expecting to see 14 feet of snow on the flats (areas that haven't had any snow cleared and have no other obstructions/drifts).

Pay a visit to Syracuse.com and search for "snow 2011" for a few scary pictures.

Whilst watching the Netherlands cam tonight (after being alerted by the bells) I heard voices before the train arrived, and saw what appeared to be camera flashes.  Despite the local time there (11:30), I have to wonder if perhaps they were railfans....

....That's a lot of snow.  I'm sure that area gets much of it each season.

If my memory serves me correctly....Back in the home area of Somerset, County, Pennsylvania....The snowfall for the '58 - '59 Winter season was 188 inches...!  I'm sure that was a record for that area.

It took all kinds of machinery to dig out.  I remember Cat tractors were used to get route 30 {yes, the Lincoln highway}, open and in some places near our home area, they plowed perpendicular to the road to get mammoth drifts open....Pushed fences down or anything else in the way.  It was emergency time.

Power shovels were used to open some other areas {in communities}, and loaded trucks to haul it away.

I had just purchased a '57 Corvette {as my only car}, and have some pic's someplace around here taken with it inside open drifts.

Highway snow blowers, {again, on route 30},  were used right near our home....Drifts that were not possible to put a large "V" plow thru, such as in cuts the road passed thru and had drifted higher than the blowers themselves, but slowly they kept at it, cutting thru until finally they would work thru a massive drift.

Cars were abandoned along highways, some with the doors open and full of snow inside, and some covered completely, and found as plows were trying to open some State highways and others as well...

Just some of my memories of it.  Storm Automobile

I'm almost ashamed to speak of the little bit of snow we received last night--it looked like about 3 inches on the ground this morning, and all the paved surfaces I have seen today (particularly those in the sun) are clear now. It was a bit different when I went in to Salt Lake City last night to pay for and pickup our tickets for a short trip next month (the station is open for the California Zephyr arrivals and departures, and not during the day). I have not seen what the ski resorts received.

Finally home from the doctor's.  I have to go back for therapy for my right knee only.  Start going next Wednesday, 3/16/11.  This time, I'm going to the one located 1 floor up from my doctor's office. I even saw the x-rays, and the knee looks perfect.  So doc and I are both stumped as to what is causing this pain; so that's why I'm going back into therapy.  Hopefully, it will help the situation.  Otherwise, unless I fall, don't have to go back for two years.

Produce went well.  Produce truck showed up super early, so had to wait around for an hour for the Bread/Pastry truck to show up.  Ended up with 62 people today.  Not bad, considering the next closest Dare to Care distribution Center was open today.

Got some more soup and cornbread out on the serving station, ready for you all. Everyone enjoy, have a good evening, and I'll see you all in the morning.

CW - good luck with the pain issue.  Could be a nerve problem.  My son's knee is perfectly normal and functional, but a lot of experts couldn't figure out how to deal with the nerve damage that occured during the knee surgery.

Found some video on Youtube from the area around the Netherlands Railcam:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMdPGhEtHyA&feature=related

Pretty interesting.

Good Evening everyone. There was a fairly simple and straightforward game of curling on TV tonight that ended early. Been a good event so far. No one is running the table, as it were.

I saw in the Lounge that there was a HUGE increase in visitors to the forum yesterday. CW, it was probably a good thing all those extra visitors didn't find the Cafe, a 150,000 extra customers might have created crowd control issues, among other things!Surprise

I think it is finally beginning to warm up around here. Looks like high's in the forties for the next 7 days, with the exception of Thursday with a high of 25°F. Might be good enough to get some melting started.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Rain seems to have stopped for a bit here.  About ten minutes ago, it was pouring down.  Didn't see cats and dogs, though.

Bruce, it doesn't matter.  I think we could have handled the crowd fairly well.  We could use a few more souls in here, especially the ones who are M.I.A.

We watched a pretty good Martin Lawrence movie last night:  The Black Knight.  I had not seen it before, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

Larry, pulled up the You Tube link, all I got was sound. Tried several of them

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast if on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and see you all later.

Joe - no "bad" kitties - just "misguided"....Mischief

Q - you got to see a lot of the action in NL!

Tree - did the guy in the blue shirt make you nervous?  He kept crowding the trains a little while standing on the platform.

Have always wondered what they do to keep people from going around the gates.  I have seen it with both pedestrian and car, but very, very infrequently.  Don't know if it is just the culture or not, but sometimes people wait quite awhile until the trains get out of the station and get moving.

Laws must be very strict.

We won't have any chicks this year unless the "Battling Bickersons" quit fighting and start being nice.

Owl and I had a long chat last nite.  Did give me a headache twisting its head around.

CW - don't need lunch today.  Driver treating me to lunch since all the snow and about 90% of the rain missed us (you would expect any thing different since rain was involved?)

Yes Bruce, it will be warmer here too, finally.  Looks like a full week of sun and maybe 40-50's.  And tiny bit of snow on ground in spots, which will make it much nicer overall.

Ah Spring!  And daylight savings time, so will get up in the dark and go to bed in the light!  AARRGH

.....A mild morning here with light rain, and Jean said radar showed lots of light green over Indiana, so looks like an all day mostly light rain.

Jen....Yes, so far, I've just checked one of the videos Larry has presented, and it was the one taken there at the intersection we look at from cam # 1 normally.

Good fast action thru there.  But I agree....that fellow with the wind {from the passing train}, blowing his light blue shirt is pushing the envelope just a bit...

He would not have any plan "B", if there was a loose piece hanging out a bit from the train....The blue shirt would need a bit of repair if that happened.  And standing that close to the fast moving train might just give some practical joker time to come up behind him and "scare" him or worse to lose his footing and then he would not have any further use for the blue shirt.

My morning project here as soon as I get off here:  Check out the HD cable box to the TV in our family room....I believe its defective.  What a pain....This will be the 3rd one {if it really is defective}, in a year or so....I know the cable is connected as it normally is as the TV in the bedroom {with it's digital adaptor}, is working.

Last night when on HD programing, the pic. would desolve into little fine "squares"...{digital stuff}, and the audio would stop as well....Then I could switch over to the same station on just digital, {not HD}, and pull in the pic / audio just fine.  Hate fighting that crap....

And not too fond of dealing with the cable co. either....

UPDATE:  Just worked thru {via email contact}, to Comcast re; our HD cable box problem....and if it does as the tech said.....at 12:30 pm, we should be back in business.  They reprogramed the signal to the Comcast cable box, to be up and ready in about 30 to 45 min.  If that works as described, we'll be very pleased....The tech was very helpful and easy to work with.

Turns out I had to do one more move {with a new tech}, and that got us thru the problem.  Working with a great pic. now, as it should.

Saw one video on YouTube that showed a crowd crossing while the gates were down.  By and large, though, they are good.   I don't think I've ever seen anyone cross.

The guy in the blue shirt was courting death.  I've see stuff hanging off the sides of cars here - it wouldn't have been pretty.

Caught an owl poking its head out of the nest box, so must be they liked the place.

Windy and reasonable here today - good thawing weather.
