Mookie, glad to hear you're hearing trains again!! I hate it when we can't hear any going by ( only live about 1 1/2 - 2 blocks from the tracks. Actually saw one a couple of days ago while walking back from the store: had not heard any horns blowing. Weird, weird, weird: should ALWAYS HEAR the horns blowing!! And have a terrific weekend visiting with Nora and family.

The Badlands are an interesting feature. The formations don't cover much land. They just sort of pop up in the middle of rolling grasslands that stretch for hundreds of miles in every direction. Just like Ayers Rock, I am sure the first people to view said what the h...? I think the popular interest is due to the formations being rather unique. As to why, I haven't looked in to the geology of the area.

Foggy here in Lincoln town. How is your weather?

Nora's coming tomorrow and of course, BNSF has completely torn up the east entrance to Hobson yard - right where I watch trains! Stopped there last nite for a minute and checked in with a regular. Told him I hadn't heard many trains lately - well, gosh - it's because they are running them north only out of Lincoln toward Omaha and Iowa and not south! It looks like a war zone on the tracks - and remember - there are six sets of them to mess with. Maybe someone told them they buried a hoghead out there and the union is trying to find him and dig him up for his dues? ?? [}:)]

Gotta go wash some of Jim's dishes - especially the dog dish!

....In another recent thread about successors to MILW, Mark (Trains Editor) used the term 'Badlands'.....We don't use that term here downunder (as far as I know) and I have heard about it on and off over the years e.g. in western movies.

I realize it's talking about really poor country that wouldn't grow a thing - but is it always desert like areas???.[%-)] (It's a name that, to me, conjures up all sorts of images like bandits prowling etc etc [:O])

Jim, the big fireworks show in Chicago is held every July 3, not on the Fourth. That's a Saturday night this year; your hotels are probably already sold out.

I have a big sky at work, and can see some of the larger shells from there, about 15 miles away. My perch is also good on the Fourth, since most of the surrounding suburbs have their own fireworks displays. I usually work the holidays (we're always busy enough), and if I should be told that we aren't working on the Fourth this year, I'll be far, far away.

All I know about the AAR stand is what I've heard through rumors - and the email reply I got from the manufacturer that said "watch this space."

I've found that I have to go to the keyboard rather than the keys on the console for some commands. Might just be me. It's still a great experience!

Speaking of the color green and Kevin's environmental association with it--I am one of six people/families that regularily puts out my recycling container EVERY week. My new Mexicians neighbors do most of the time but not every week and the otherneighbors do occasionally. This has cut down on my household trash drastically. Well In Nora's persepctive- My favorite colour is Orange aswell, Howveer I hate a lot of orange things for example- Orange Streetlights -(Na (sodium vapor)) because of the color destortion- And I'm not to keen on orange locomotives- Although, if i see one, i'll sure as heck will take apicture of it- But I love the colour orange.

And to top it off Chicago is one city I definately want to visit. I want to see the sub at the museum there and also the model train layout. One of my desires to to book a motel room overlooking the lake where they shoot off the fireworks for the big Fourth Of July Celebration. One of these years I am going to do that. Just have to wait a few years before I can, but I am going to go or else.

Another one of my goals is to ride as many of the Amtrak trains as possible. Not all at once but when I am able one a year. Starting in Chicago and seeing how they once started a journey from a major city would be interesting to me.

If you saw Nora, you saw me, too! You might have seen some little ones running around the perimeter, too. They certainly like their trains, or "ejuns", as Jay calls them. My wife and I spent a couple of hours with Nora, Rick, Jay, and Charlie, both at the park and at lunch. I wish we'd had more time (and more trains!), but I barely made it back to Proviso in time for my 1:00 meeting.

I hope they can come around again when they have a few days to kill in Chicagoland.

Mook, they know about the children's museum in Lincoln, and are planning on going there.

And I agree wholeheartedly on Runza's (I still have my drink glass from there)!
