Since my Dalmatian is deaf, he doesn't hear the minor annoyances that might set other dogs to barking.  If he sees something, he might bark, but otherwise he's pretty quiet.

Unless he wants my attention (like, his water bowl is empty or he's hungry and I haven't filled his bowl lately, or maybe it's bed time).  First he "grumbles."  Then he barks.  Just one bark (unless I ignore him).  Unfortunately, since he can't hear most of his barks come out at one volume level - LOUD.

The other dog, also now deaf, was known to bark at random events, but could usually be shushed with a stern word.

Yesterday she was napping and apparently having quite the dream.  As opposed to the usually yips and mini-barks that come from a dreaming dog, her sleepy barks approximated the real thing.  Went on for quite a while, too.  I wonder what she was chasing...

I have to do everything but take the dogs, put postage on them and mail them into animal control

You should have done that last week, before the postage rates went up.Smile

On dogs–

After we married, Ricki and I could not agree as to where to keep a dog (She knew only house dogs, and I knew only yard dogs), so we did not get one–until Katie, her older daughter, brought a little, solid black, half black lab, half golden retriever puppy home. The thought was that the dog would go with Katie when she moved out, but circumstances dictated that the dog, named "Mountain Dog," stayed, and we discovered that the dog’s full name was "Beautiful Black Mountain Doggy Girl" ("Girl," for short ). After fourteen years as a house dog, Girl became too feeble to stay with us any longer, so we took her to a vet for the last time.

The following winter, we took charge of a ten-month old dog who, we were told, was a purebred yellow lab, but had no papers. As he matured, we realized that the description may have fitted his mother, but his father was also a dog. We never figured out just what breeds were present, but they all added up to a fine, eighty-five to ninety pound lap dog. He had been called "Budkis" by his first owner, but we preferred "Buddy’ (and several other names which were said nicely). If he came into a room where both Ricki and I were, he would come up and greet each one of us. He, too, fell ill to troubles (cancer), and we asked a vet to come to house to take care of him.

What aroused their barking? A junior high school is just back of our house, and a bushhog was used to cut the grass. Its appearance would set Girl off–and Buddy never was bothered by it. He was quite concerned about many people who passed in front of the house (particularly the children on their way to or from the elementary (I never went to an elementary school; I went to a grammar school) school down the street–and hardly ever did anyone out front disturb Girl.

There are two dogs who live across the street, and are often in the front yard. When the gate to the street is open, they stay in their yard. The older one does not bark much, but the younger one is disturbed by more things, and will bark at great length at things and people that should not bother her. I will tell her to hush, but she pays no attention to me. They do not bark at night; I do not know if they are kept in the house at night or not.

Thankfully, the occasions of dogs barking at length in the night are rare here.

Lawn is being fertlized now as I write

Is your fertilizer spreader self-propelled? When I was a boy, I knew a man who had a self-propelled lawnmower. He would let his cow out in front of the house, and she never wandered out into the road, but stayed in the yard.

Johnny - aren't animals great.  But you said exactly why I would never have another dog, cat, fish, bird, snail or lizard - I can't go thru the heartbreak of losing them.  Plus the landlord has asked that we have no pets.  Hence the squirrels and birds.  If they disappear, I never know the difference.

I don't mind a dog barking occasionally.  But these dogs have no timers on them.  Early, late, overnite, and like a good chorale group - "a-one-a and a-two-a".

My folks had a dog 2 houses down from them for years that Dad called him "the yodeler".  And yes, he did.

I call her by her name, but it makes no difference. If her owner is present when I go over, she does not bark, but if he is not, she barks. It may be that, even after several years, she is uncertain about me and lets her worry be known. The other dog lets me pet him every time, but she is quite leery.

Johnny, it's done by a local lawn service....4 times a season.  Sometimes it's liquid and today their {motorized spreader}, installed pellets.  It really does make it grow fast, but sure is pretty nice to have all round our home.  5/8 of an acre.

Yes, Mookie, animals, especially dogs, are great. After my grandfather died, my mother, my brother who was still at home, and I moved in with my grandmother. For some reason, she did not like dogs, so we had to get rid of the two we had (we had had one for almost ten years, and the other one was four or five years old). For thirty-one years, I had no dog. Then, I had first one and then the other for twenty-four years altogether. When I turn my computer on, I see a picture of Buddy (wallpaper), and think of the wonderful times we had together. I still walk some of the routes we took when I was exercising him (he did not know it was for his health; he thought it was so he could do his duty in inspecting the neighborhood, finding out who had been around and letting it be known that he had been there).

It is true that many people have no idea of the problems their pets provide, and there are those who have no understanding as to how to discipline their pets. One example: a dog had run out of the house, and returned when his mistress called him. After he had done what she wanted him to do, she called him, "Bad Dog,"  as though he could connect the punishment with what he had done before he obeyed, and not think he was bad because he had come.

By the way, have you been reading the "What's in a name?" thread? Doublestack wants you to explain your screen name. I thought of referring him to your response to my curiosity, but it would be too difficult for me to find it now.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Nice and cool here in Louisville, KY, with a temp of 51 degrees.  Supposed to make it up to 75 today.

Coffee, hot chocolate, juices and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, (pork)sausages, scrambled eggs, hash browns and toast.

Mookie, here's your coffee mug.  If I didn't have Tuesday Produce, you and I could go sit out in the garden with our coffee.  Maybe we might be able to do that sometime this afternoon.

You all enjoy your breakfast, have a good morning, take care and I'll see you all later.

Another frosty one overnight, but the skies are clear and blue this morning!   Can't complain about that.

Talked to daughter last night.  Owen is settling in a bit, so the fatigue factor doesn't seem to be as bad for mom.  The first week was pretty exhausting for them all.  I'll probably head down again on Sunday.

I'll have my tea and bearclaw over in the corner.

Good afternoon, everyone.  It's looking like it's going to be a very beautiful afternoon:  even though there are clouds, we've got plenty of sunshine!  Current temp is about 64 degrees.

Mookie, you're welcome regarding the coffee.  Hope everything with the eye doctor goes all right.

Not too bad a turnout for Produce this morning:  52 people (and the other place was open this morning), so that' not too bad.  I think almost half the people who came this morning were newbies.

On the truck this morning:  green apples, cabbage, celery, fresh ears of corn, and chopped romaine lettuce.

Our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta is on the warmer bar.  I've scaled it down a bit, since we've not been having very many people coming in lately:

1.  tacos (soft shell and hard shell)   2.  burritos (beef, beef & bean, and burrito deluxe enchilada style  3.  chopped lettuce w/tomatoes  4.  tortilla chips w/your choice of picante sauce, salsa or con queso

You all enjoy your meal, your afternoon, and take care.

Back with both eyes just like they were this morning.  He said I am doing fine.

Do have allergies, so I use NaphconA - about $8-$10 OTC and one bottle will last me about a year.  So eye dr gave me a free sample of something new.  It had a coupon attached for $40 after you pay the first $25 for the drops!  That nearly sent me into cardiac arrest!

Now I wonder if that sweet, young doctor has any concept of the economy and old people on fixed incomes?  Blindfold  Must be nice to live in Disneyland year round.....

A beautiful early afternoon here in central Indiana....our part of the mid west....Sunny and clear sky.  Just slightly below normal in temp.

Humming bird is busy at our feeder.  Believe we have just the one so far this season....I'm sure there will be more.

Did some running in Muncie making some stops as needed and sure did hear lots of train horns passing thru...Believe one was Triple Crown, wasn't within site but it was just before 11 and that's in the bracket of time when it passes south.

Now....Guess it's time to go get gas for the tractor and do another mowing.  Might be raining some of tomorrow.

Whenever we get a prescription filled at our pharmacy, we get a slip that shows what we paid and what it would have cost had we had no insurance (we do not have Medicare part B; ours is greatly superior; may we be able to keep it); often the difference is horrendous. You can really wonder about other people's knowledge of the real world.

Mookie, if you do have allergies, I can definitely identify and sympathize with you! In the final week of April I spent two days just cleaning up my yard, and I filled 13 bags full of leaves, twigs and dead grass. And I sure paid for this kind of activity with a full blown sinus infection which was just an absolute mess. I've not seen my doctor, but I was told in 1995 that I am allergic to certain varieties of tree pollen, four or five different types of grass and all kinds of dust. I'm doing a lot better now, but I went through a whole box of kleenex tissues just trying to keep my nose clean and my sinuses drained. I hope you will soon be doing a lot better yourself!

You're welcome, Joe.

Mookie, glad everything is A-OK with the eyes!

I've replenished everything on the warmer bar for our Mexican Fiesta for tonight.  Now that I've done that, I think it's about time to go into our kitchen here at home, and start fixing supper.  Going to put on some of the ears of corn I brought home from Produce this morning, and have that with leftover beef stew and cornbread.

You all enjoy your supper, have a great evening, and take care.

I was looking at my calendar awhile ago, to see who has birthdays coming up.  On May 21st,, we have Ole Tallowpot, and on the 28th, Brian Hanel.  I know Brian still comes in once in awhile; but what has happened to Ole Tallowpot?  Wonder if he's posting under a different name, or has he left the forums.  Does anyone know?  (I don't want to wish him a Happy Birthday next week, and he's not around to see it!)

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  We currently have a temp in the mid 50s here in Louisville this morning.  Getting some rain coming into the area.  Looks like it's going to be an off and on rain day around here.  Going to be a windy day also, with possible thunder boomers.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, hash browns; or, you can have a bowl of cereal, toast and fresh fruit.

Here's your coffee mug, Mookie, with your hot coffee.

I hope you all had a very nice evening.  And I also hope everyone has a nice day today.

Coffee very good this morning!  Thanx CW

Rain and storms moving east.  Can't say just where they will end up, but we have a cold front coming through this morning and will lower humidity and with strong north winds, will dry up all the rain.  Didn't get a lot (.44) but every teeny bit helps.

Having company later today, so must put on a clean t-shirt.  Thumbs Up

Ms Mook - We won't be concerned until you start discussing putting on the cleanest t-shirt...  Smile,Wink, & Grin

Looking like we'll see some weather over the weekend (of course).  And I've got a pretty busy weekend planned, some of which will have to be outside.  Ouch.

Went with a blueberry bagel this morning, for a change.

CW - Daughter was somewhat relieved that her newborn wasn't born until May (even though it meant she was a week late), as now all three of their birthdays are in May.  It seems to be a popular month in our family.

Mornin all....

Been a nice week so far, did some cutting and burning at the house, and dad brought the mixer truck home from work last night so we could pour part of my mother's new walkway next to the garage.  Raining up here today, so no work at the house, plus I have a CT scan this afternoon so cardiologist can rule out something (hopefully).

If train traffic picks up, might step out the front door of the apartment complex and shoot some photos later.  Right now, Smokey (one of my sister's two cats) is enjoying the wildlife outside the patio doors, and I'm enjoying watching her right now.

Larry, yeah, May seems to be a month for birthdays in my family also.  Along with my & my brother's birthday, we have a niece, and a couple of friends with May birthdays.  The next biggest birthday month in the family is November. We have about six or seven birthdays then.

Randy, hope all goes well with  the cardiologist this afternoon!!

Mookie's not the only one who had company today.  Brian (louisnash) dropped by to see us for awhile.  He was down here to pick up a delivery for his work place.  We haven't seen him for probably two years.  It was a very nice visit, and we all enjoyed it.

Here's the menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Beef & noodles w/fresh garden salad, mashed taters & brown gravy, peas & carrots

2.  Open-face turkey sandwiches w/above mentioned side dishes

Desserts:  chocolate brownies w/ nuts, yellow cake w/chocolate icing, and apple cobbler w/ice cream

We had a light rain shower early this morning, and looks like we may get some more in the next little bit.  Wind is picking up, and clouding up again.  Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and take care.

Hello?  Anyone home?

CT scan went well, won't know for a few days on if the doc can rule out what he was looking for, but the contrast injection was interesting, kinda felt like one was being microwaved (all of the sudden my insides got real hot).  Also had to down a bunch of water afterwards to help my system clean out the contrast, so tonight's sleep should be interesting.

The last few hours we have had some good storms go through, enough to unplug anything that didn't have a surge box inline, lots of rain, and a few thunderclaps scared the cats pretty good.  Supposed to clear out by morning, and be nice tomorrow.  Getting a hankering to build a small shelf layout either at the house or in the apartment, have had a paper mill kit from Walthers lying around for a few years, kinda want to use that as a focal point, have seen quite a few mills in my travels, also wanting to drag out some of my Wisconsin Central power and rolling stock.  Now, if only I could find some HO KW T2000s and 53ft Great Dane van trailers decorated for Millis Transfer.......

Well, off to bed.....

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Randy, glad to know everything went well at the doctor's yesterday.  Those tests are really something, aren't they.  Hope you managed to get some sleep last night.

We're starting to see some rain come into the area.  I've heard a little bit of thunder, haven't seen any lightning yet, but they say it is beginning to show up.  Hopefully, it will be over for us around mid morning.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate or chocolate milk and hot water for tea are ready.

Mookie, got your coffee mug out and ready for you.

On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, BLTs on toasted bread, bacon, eggs, hash browns, scrambled eggs.

Well, I hear a downpour of rain, so going to get off here, and go check the open windows.  See you all later.
