Well,  the Plimico race is over:  Rachel Alexandra won, with Mine That Bird coming in second.  Interesting race to watch, that's for sure.  And no, I didn't have any money on the race.

Hmmm--one can wonder if Mine that Bird would have won if Calvin Borel had ridden him again. Now, will Mr. Borel ride the winning horse in the Belmont? If he does, will he be the Triply Crowned Jockey?

Yes, RJ, congratulations on finishing college. Do you have plans, other than resting from academic work for a while?

Well, we got rocked today.  Storms all over the place.

I drove down to the railroad (scenic) on Friday to build a cabinet for our crew office (there was a small picnic table there that just took up too much room.   Worked on that until about dark, then started back up first thing in the morning.  Finally finished what I could do (the carpentry) before I had to leave for home and the FD banquet.

Someone else will have to apply the finish.

While I was working on the cabinet this morning I was suddenly surrounded by a bright blue-white light, and almost immediately after heard the resounding boom.  Not sure where the bolt hit, but it was close....

Rained on and off all day, then on my way home I encountered a "white out" - rain so hard I could barely see the road.

Didn't last long, though.

Gonna go visit the baby (and his parents) tomorrow.

I think that over on the coast, that would be called a "squall." Ricki and I drove through a snow squall between St. John and Moncton the day after Easter, and the next Monday, we drove through a squall right after we crossed the Rappahannock into Lancaster county, Va. By the way, down near the Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock is a RIVER; Ricki was surprised at the width (much, much wider than it is a Fredericksburg, where we crossed it, twice, the next day). I remembered it as being wide down there, from crossing it on a ferry in 1941.

Night all....

Beautiful day today, so went to parents and mowed lawn, picked up sticks, and got the pool filter filled with sand.  Will run over tomorrow to pull off winter cover and get pump up and running, and start dumping in chemicals to get water ready.  If wind is light tomorrow, may start another pile of brush burning, and get rid of a few more trees and those #%^%& grape vines.

Went over to a friend of mine's this evening for dinner and to see his daughter, little Gwen is a bundle of energy (and has a voracious appetite to match!).  Also got to see his most recent purchase, three Massey-Harris model 35 combines from different owners.  This model is one of the first purpose-built combines (not based on a tractor running in reverse), and is probably one of the smallest, if not the smallest.  It is about as big as a Crown Victoria, except is about eight feet tall, and has an eight foot grain head and a two row corn head.  He has one of them in running condition, and he figures on stripping the other two for useable parts, although he may have enough parts to build a second one.

CN has been busy in town lately, on Friday they were changing out rail on the high side of the curve downtown, presuming they will be back Monday changing out the low side.  Judging from the equipment that has been delivered the last few days, they should be changing to a tie gang, with the first project being ties on the Nestle spur.

See everyone later....

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  Cool here in Louisville this morning, with a temp in the 50s.  Should get up to the mid to upper 60s for a high today.  Then, tonight, some people in the area could see frost tomorrow morning!  And it will be dry throughout the week.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are available.  And if anyone wants some, there's some hot cider, also.

On the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls, fresh from the bakery and homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy and hash browns.

I think I'll fire up the grill for Sunday Dinner today:  how about some rib eye steaks, grilled "baked potatoes", macaroni salad, garden salad, potato salad, green beans, baked beans, grilled corn on the cobDinner

Everyone have a great morning, take care going to Church, or whatever you'll be doing this morning, and later on today.  See you all later.

Randy, sounds like you had a very busy day yesterday!  Bet you're worn out this morning.Wink

Good morning CW and the rest of the Untied States of America, and Canada! CW, Yum! B-fast is really good. Scrambled eggs and susage is really good! The cider is also tasty! The big rib eye sounds likea perfect thing for dinner. Well, went to town yesterday. There was a NB auto rack waiting in the siding at West Point for a SB Manafest to rumble through. I got to see my first SD70M-2 yesterday. The SB manafest had the uge, a -9,-8,-9 lash up. Now thesad part about this story is that I didn't have my camre with me, and I had intended to bring it with me... Darn. Well, at least I have eye's to see it with. Hope you all have a good Sunday, supposed to be a cool one here. Waether lady says "A big warm-up later in the week" Wele see about that.

Yes, Joe, you can fix a doggie bag for work tonight!  You know you can always fix a plate or plates every day to take for work, or to take home to Stacey and Matt!!

I'll be loading the steaks and other items onto the grill in about an hour, so everything will be ready when everyone starts coming in after Church, or whatever you've been doing this morning.

I think that over on the coast, that would be called a "squall

It would be called that here, too, but a white out was more descriptive.

I've been in worse, though.   I was driving around St Louis on the north side beltway one night (enroute to OKC) when I got caught in a squall so bad that I could only tell I was still in my lane by spotting the Jersey barriers out the driver's side window.   Didn't dare slow down too much for fear that someone else would run into me, or change lanes because I couldn't see the other lanes.   Nasty.

I have been caught in heavy rain on I-64 between Covington, Va., and White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. We were thankful that there was very little other traffic to endanger us when I slowed down. Also, I have been in heavy rain when going through Gordo, Ala., at night, on US 82. Again, there was not much other traffic.

Aside from ice and snow on the highways around here, the worst thing is patches of fog that collect in low spots, particularly on the Interstates. There have been some nasty pile-ups because the drivers in front could not see where they were going, and were rear-ended when they slowed down (65 mph speed limit).

The closest I came to extreme difficulty was on my way to work one morning (I am thankful that I did not have to travel in the same direction as most working people), with slush on the divided six lane highway (not Interstate), and more snow falling. I was in the leftmost lane (I turned left when I left the highway), and, as I came over a hill on a right-hand curve, I noticed the front end of the car in front of me slowly moving to the right--and an eighteen-wheeler was in the center lane. I thought, "It's too soon for that car to be moving to the center lane,"--and I was right: one of the rear wheels clipped the front end of the car, which ws spun 180 degrees. I managed to get into the center lane and then back into the left lane. I did not see if the rig stopped or not; the driver may not have seen the collision. It may be that the driver of the car that was hit touched the brake after topping the hill. A co-worker who came in a little after I did told me that the driver of the car was just sitting there, with a horrified look on her face.

As I would tell the OTR men when they were leaving the plant, "Watch out for the idiots on the road."

Good Monday morning, everyone.  I hope everyone had a good weekend, and mudchicken, I hope you get rested up from all your surveying travels!  You deserve a good rest!!

We have clear skies, with temps ranging from 40 to about 46 degrees this morning, and supposed to make it up to 70, 71 today.  Quentin, did you all get any of that frost up your way this morning?

The coffee, juices, cider, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, grapefruit, oatmeal, toast, etc.

Everyone have a good morning, Mookie, your coffee mug is ready for you, and everyone take care.

Adrian!!  It's very good to hear from you!  I've been wondering about you.  Which desert are you heading to?

Tom, sounds like you're now getting what we had last week, weather wise.  Haven't checked the actual amount in our rain guage, from the storms Friday and Saturday, but it definitely isn't much!  Guess the winds we've had took it elsewhere.

On today's menu:

Italian spaghetti w/garlic Texas toast, and salad, along with all the leftovers from our cookout yesterday.

Everyone enjoy your meal, have a great afternoon, and take care.  See you all later on.   Think it's time for a nap.  Don't worry Mookie, I'll curl up in the recliner.

Walt, you had better inform that dog about who has authority in the café.

The last time we went through White Sulphur (last month), we crossed the state line in a tunnel–much better than on a highway. In 1954, I went to the Greenbrier–but to see a movie and not to spend the night. I always had much less expensive accommodations in the area; a sister-in-law (Betsy) grew up less than fifteen miles from there (just over the Greenbrier-Monroe county line, on US 219); she lives in Lewisburg now. A sister-in-law of hers lives at the home place now. I have always enjoyed visiting in the area.

Back in the summer of '74, just before we moved out here, we visited Betsy, and she took us up to Cass to ride the Cass Scenic Railroad. This was my second ride; the first was in the fall of '70 (it was really chilly).

Are (were) you in the Reserve, which induced you to drive to Ft. Eustis?
