Looks like a pretty average winter day here - temps in the low 20's, possible snow.  Nothing we can't live with.

Was looking for a picture last night - found everything but, but found lots of other interesting pictures, too!

Maybe it was a slide.  That's another box altogether!

I see my bearclaw is ready on the grill.

.....I don't know where the storm is located now....But I can see we got just about a half inch over night as it must have passed this area...20 degrees right now.  So don't know what is next.  We were to be on just the edge of this one passing by on the south and that looks pretty much what happened but now must check reports and radar what's next.

Paula, my Grandmother's sister made biscuits out of sweet potatoes, and they were extraordinary. She died in 1968 and I can only dream about them now. Do you have a recipe?

Tom, I've never heard of sweet potato biscuits; but I'll find a recipe and make you some.

Do not get me started on the FREAKING IRS 1040A forms.  Of course with what my wife just found out next year I get an EXTRA grand added to the return however does not help me right now at all.  She has been feeling bad and so she took an EPT tonight sucker gave 2 lines so fast I thought the test was defective so she took the back up did the same thing.  I guess it is positive then.

Let's see -  carry 5, subtract 2, multiply by 85%, add....  doing income taxes.  Did you know that when you officially become a seasoned citizen, it takes longer to do your taxes?  I used to just write in a few figures and put a stamp on it.  Now I had to fill out 3 worksheets.  And we aren't even into our IRA's yet and have no real estate taxes!  Guess they figure you have had all these years to test for this!

Weather - it has "sprinkled" snow all day - and the sun shone like mad for awhile.  Maybe 1-3 more tonite - so far all "broomable".  42 degrees on Sat!  If not windy - will be able to unbutton fur.

Sweet potato biscuits - Google "sweet potato biscuits" and you get a recipe from Paula Deen!  Can't beat that - even with a stick!

Back to taxes!

Moo....

As, yes, Jen, the benefits of older age are amazing. Of course, when you have filed an estimated tax return for forty-six years, you have had good practice in all sorts of manipulations. If you have contributed to a pension plan, you have to subtract what you paid into it until you have subtracted all that you paid; if you are drawing an annuity that was bought with post-tax money, you have to subtract the part that is a payback on your investment; if you are drawing social security, you have to determine how much of it is taxable. Then, when your personal bookkeeper wants to know how much money to put into the tax fund each month so that the estimated tax and final tax will not bite you, you have to calculate that as well. I do the taxes and Ricki does the bookkeeping. She started keeping detailed records when she was young, I did not stop her when we married. Our state form is even more involved this year than it had ever been in my knowledge (34 years worth), what with a total change in the deductions.

'evening, all. Another, as usual, different day. Instead of walking this morning, I ran my snow thrower--not much snow, but it was quicker than shoveling.

Ray, you never can tell when you will step on ice, even in broad daylight. Four years ago, I was out walking (for my health, of course). I had come upon fresh patches of snow on the sidewalk here and there, and I had been able to continue at my usual pace (I am down some from my 4 mph of college days)--until I stepped on what looked to be the same, but there was ice under a thin layer of snow. I turned my ankle, and hobbled home. It took about two weeks for it to get back to normal. I managed to keep my work up (forklift, deskwork, handling gas cylinders, etc.), though I had to use use a cane to get around. You be careful, and try not to break anything.

Paula, thanks for the grits. Put a chunk of breadspread on the grits, let it melt, stir it in--yummm! That is pork sausage, isn't it? I don't mind if it is a little bit hot.

I went back to the doctor this morning to learn the findings from the blood I gave last week; I do not need to make any changes in my living; thanks be to God.

Good Monday morning, everyone.  We're at 20 degrees this morning, with a 'dusting' of snow.  Funny (weird, since the ground is totally covered).  Supposed to get up to 32 F today, then the snow comes in full force, around 10, 11 tonight.  Have some school closings and two hour delays, except for here in Jefferson County.  They are open, and on time.

Coffee, juices (oj, oj/tangerine, pineapple, apple, grape), hot chocolate, hot water for tea are ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage links & patties, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, oatmeal, grits, toast, bagels and bear claws.

Well, we'll  probably have to put out some rock salt this afternoon, on the front section of our sidewalk.  When I put it out the other day, that one section was totally clear and dry, so I just left that section alone.

Roy, you will receive your meal requests tomorrow (Tuesday), especially since it will be your birthday!

Everyone have a good morning, stay warm, and safe and take care.

Thank you Maam Miss Paula: After a full 57 years I can say that  lemon icebox pie it is my favorite desert (especially with a good cup of coffee to go with it.

Looks like the weather reports are really varied from everyoneRay, take care of yourself! Like Tom said, you are too far from us, for any of us to take care of you.

Just came from the Trackside thread.  All the pictures are great, and I had a very hard time deciding who to vote for.  Finally went with Kathi's.

Menu for the rest of the day:  1.  beef stew w/cornbread; 2.  all three levels of chili:  mild, medium and hot; 3.  leftover roast, taters & carrots from yesterday.

Guess I'd better get back to the washing.  Have plenty of it today.  You all take care, and have a good afternoon.

Brian, I thought about calling you today--ZDLSKP had a slightly extended stay in Beverly (of course I didn't know that was going to happen!).

Rats- probably wouldn't have made a difference, though, as we were pretty busy today with church, shopping, and small group meeting tonight... what was the deal- mechanical issue of some sort?

Don't know; it was still there when I left work, and I can't check from here. Probably more to do with other trains than its own problems.

I am a bit stiff and sore this morning, having taken a bad fall while walking home from work yesterday afternoon. I slipped and fell on a patch of ice on a corner 4 blocks from here and landed on my left hip. I went down like a ton of bricks but thankfully I wasn't hurt beyond some minor bruising.

Ray! You'd better take care of yourself. You are too far away for us to tend to you. Stay safe, Bro.

Must be nice, all you folks living in such tropical climes.

The airport here reported -21F early this morning.

The lake effect machine looks to be firing up again and is supposed to swing north a little later.  Watertown got over a foot Saturday evening/Sunday morning, and they were warning of accumulations of 1-2" per hour in areas south of us late yesterday.   Some people are having trouble finding places to put it all.

Ray - be careful.  Us not-so-young'ns don't heal as fast as we used to.   And we seem to break easier, too.

Tea and bearclaw.   I'll be over in the corner.

Good morning everybody, It's Monday. That out of the way, it's 37 and cloudy in Carolina this morning. The clouds will break early and it is supposed to top out around 51. Overall, not a bad day. CW, thanks for breakfast. MC, you'd best stay indoors along with the crews. Everybody keep warm and safe

We have about 9 degrees above 0 here in Sioux Falls, which is typical of our South Dakota winters. We will be lucky if we see 12 to 15 degrees as our maximum high this afternoon, and I was looking at the web site of the Weather Underground and the information I got is that this area has a 70% chance of getting some snow. As to how much we will get remains to be seen.

........16.2 degrees here this morning as we start the new week....We understand there is a massive snow / ice storm on it's way from way out in the central / south plains.

It's tracking as of last evening was sweeping east...perhaps a bit south of Jen in Lincoln and on towards us....and the brunt of it to be in the southern half of Indiana as it passes.  So far, they are saying it will arrive tonight and we might see about 1" of the stuff here as we're about 60 miles north of Indy.  Then on across southern Ohio, and across West Va. and just along the south border of Pennsylvania and on up across New England.

But on it's way that seems like it will come rather close across the Louisville area....So I suppose lots of people will be effected by this.

10 degrees and light snow in Denver. The bottom finally fell out on the thermometer yesterday and we joined the rest of the icebox nation. Hope our survey crews stay in, kinda hard to find spray painted utility markings on the ground about now.

 Good eveining all!

Finally Southwest Wyoming is feeling normal January Weather.... After almost 3 straight days of rain, It finally turned cold and dumped 2-3 inches of snow on us and temps are dropping towards 0.

I have been so busy lately, School is getting going full bore, and apparently, the Math and Chemistry teachers seem to think their classes are all we are taking this semester. I just completed 6 hours of homework. So apparently we don't have lives on the weekends either.... The last 2 Saturdays I spent with my Snowshoeing class in the Wind River Mountains. Last weekend, 1-18 was BEAUTIFUL! A clear sunny day, with temps up to 40. We were snowshoeing with no coats and just t-shirts on. We did 5 miles starting at 8500 feet up to 9200 feet and then back down. Yesterday was colder, we only did about 2 miles but took the time to build a snow hut and practice some survival techniques. I took some decent ohotos, Hope you don't mind if I post a couple.

Fremont Lake, Above Pinedale About 1200 feet below the trail.

Mulligan Park,  A small clearing with a meadow and a small stream nestled in the trees off the trail.

At work today, I got confirmation of a week-old rumor: our third weekly perishable train was on the road. ZWASK6 will depart Wallula, Washington, on Saturday nights, and probably be here by Tuesday sometime.

Really?  So now if I actually get out there and do some railfanning again someday, I have better odds of catching one of these?

SJ, my dad probably would have known what you were talking about, and may even have had some in his store at one time.

Randy, I, too, suspect that the television people will have Governor for lunch. He just doesn't get it.

Today was a bit of a momentous anniversary for me. It was 45 years ago today that I received my first ride on a freight train outside yard limits, courtesy of a kind and generous Grand Trunk Western crew that took me from Grand Haven to Grand Rapids, 31.3 miles. January 25, 1964, was the day that a nice January thaw ended, and it was cold and windy. But not in the caboose, where an oil stove was keeping things toasty. I was in the cupola, enjoying the view ahead and to the side, seeing the roads from which I usually was looking at the tracks. I discovered two things on that trip: a place in Grand Rapids known as Fuller, which seemed like heaven to me: switchers from GTW, C&O, and PRR were all working in the vicinity when we arrived; and the station in Grand Rapids, which was a fairly modern structure that had taken the place of the old building off on a wye close to the downtown. At that station I was given a souvenir for this first trip: a November 1962 Official Guide.

At work today, I got confirmation of a week-old rumor: our third weekly perishable train was on the road. ZWASK6 will depart Wallula, Washington, on Saturday nights, and probably be here by Tuesday sometime.
