Snowing again.

Gets old after a while, doesn't it.

Nah.

Light stuff.  Pushed it up and down the driveway with the shovel.  See how it looks in the morning.  If there's too much a pull on the starter cord of the snowblower will take care of it.

Larry, I'm sorry, but I cannot resist asking, "Where can I find a snowblower starter cord that will take care of the snow if I pull it?"

I never listened to or watched Jack Benny the first time around, but usually get a healthy dose of his radio shows on "Those Were The Days." Predictable humor, but that's half the fun!

But if you think violinists have it bad, pity the poor violists. Viola jokes are a complete genre of sarcastic humor. Usually they're funny to outsiders, but some performing violists (my daughter, for one) don't appreciate them.

Q: Why is a viola called "bratsch" in German?

A: Because that's the noise it makes when you stomp on it.

.....The old Jack Benny radio and TV show was always working that violin of his into the storyline somehow.  And the word was actually in so many words....."play it if you like, but somewhere else....".

Oh yes.....Jack and Rochester.

Our temp rose just above freezing here for an hour or two this afternoon but don't see much of any melting of this stuff.....It's now back to 31.5 a bit after 4 pm.  But that's certainly a lot better than what we saw here a week or so ago.  Believe we're to get down to about 10 tomorrow morning.  At least no more snow today.  Snow flurries are possible next day or two though.

Hope this massive shot of winter was our peak for the season.  Muncie paper indicated this morning we received the biggest one time snow fall since about 1950.   I wonder about that.   I'm reminded of the blizzard of Jan. 78 which I thought produced somewhat more.  We were stranded at home here for 4 days and my BW plant was shut down for the first time in 60 years.

Stopped at our brand new bakery shop out on our side of Muncie late this morning and purchased sweets for our snow clearing neighbors and had some good hot coffee and sandwiches while we were there but had to wait so long....Didn't mind as it just opened yesterday and understand things get a bit messed up on a new opening....Anyway, they brought our food and 14 dollars to the table with "you had to wait so long it's on us"....Didn't expect that nor thought necessary, but that's the way they wanted it.

Guess that's good business practices....But we would still go back anyway, as they have the best donuts, etc.....Have had for years in the downtown mainstore.  Business name:  Concannon's.

I hope our warm weather (low about twenty, high in the thirties) can get over east to help the cold folks out. Out here, we barely got even a trace of snow yesterday, but lake effect was reported this morning inthe are north and east of us.

Tom, the White House guard's fear remind of my experience with a violin. I was visiting a college friend who had a violin, and I tried fiddling with it a bit. Since I had to think carefully as to where I had to stop each string, it did not sound good. On a later visit, the violin was missing a string; I think the lady of the house requested that it be taken off before I arrived. I haven't touched one since.

Sarah is still a conductor with CSX, just on furlough at this time; she is also a member of a volunteer fire department, located about 3 miles from our home.

Menu for the rest of the day:  1.  chicken ala king; 2.  Italian spaghetti w/garlic Texas toast and garden salad; 3.  hamburger macaroni & cheese casserole.

At 12:19, we have a current temp of 28.9 F, may see 31, 32 for the high.  They showed a couple of businesses locally, (Home Depot & Pep Boys), with humongous lines of people waiting to buy generators.  Home Depot even had people who spent the night in their store, so they could manage to buy a generator this morning.  One truck came in from a store across the river in Jeffersonville, and those were sold out in just a few minutes.  That was at 5 a.m. this morning.  Two hours later, another truck came in with about 120 generators on it, and those went quickly also.

Joe, glad Matt was able to get to school this morning.  Our public schools, and the private schools won't open back up until Monday.  In the extended forecast, we're supposed to have more snow coming in Monday.  They can't tell yet, how much will be coming in then.  Hopefully, no more than a dusting.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  As you can tell, slept in this morning.  At 8:42, we have a temp of 26 degrees, give or take a degree on either side.  Took the dog out, and managed to stay up (she slid a few times).  Not much of a breeze, so didn't feel too bad.  Supposed to get to 33 or so today.

I did hear on GMA awhile ago that Houston is to be back up in the 60s today.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot water for tea are ready, and on the warmer bar:  bagels, bear claws, sausage, biscuits & gravy, grits, oatmeal, etc.

You all have a good day, and if anyone has any requests for lunch/supper, please let me know.

Stopped snowing about 9 last night.   Couldn't get into the forum for some reason, however.

We really didn't get a lot of snow - I probably cleared 5" out of the driveway, but it wasn't the nice fluffy stuff.   It wasn't wet and sticky, either, just a fine snow that was a tad heavy.   The snowblower made short work of it.

GP - that sounds like my driveway - about the same length.  Just got it paved this past fall, so it's a lot easier to keep clear.   If I use the snow blower it's about 7 passes and I'm done.  If it's light stuff I'll just push the snow shovel up and down the driveway a couple dozen times.  It's easier than throwing it all one shovelful at a time.

I have a neighbor with a snowblower mounted on a small farm-type tractor.  He's been known to do my driveway, and usually clears near the road so I don't get as much snow pushed into the end of my driveway from the town plows.  It's kind of a toy for him, so the more snow he gets to blow, the more fun he's having...

More snow in the forecast today.   It is winter, however...

My bearclaw is ready on the grille, and my tea is steeping.  I'll be over in the corner.

"Its a Thompson sub machine gun" he replied. The guard answered with "That's a relief. I was afraid it was your violin!"

Tom.....That's the first post I read this morning.....A good start for the day.  I had forgot about that one.  And a really good one.

We are all shoveled and plowed out from yesterday.....Massive storm.  We escaped the ice but not the snow.  Total on ground now about 1 foot.  Quite a bit for here.  Temp now:  20 plus.  Seems very calm out now.

Neighbors dug me out....Don't do much snow shoveling.  And they won't take any green for when they do it either.

Both Jean and I will visit the dentist this morning....So that's our morning schedule.

Edit:  Note the Avatar...That's my driveway and it's 70' long but next door fellows just won't take no for an answer and keep it clean for us.

How many remember Jack Benny and his violin?

He was Emcee of the 1949 inaugural ball for Harry Truman. Arriving at the White House, he was stopped by a guard who asked what was in the violin case. "Its a Thompson sub machine gun" he replied. The guard answered with "That's a relief. I was afraid it was your violin!"

A great comedian.

Mookie - I read a while back that Wyoming and Nebraska are meeting for 3 games in the next few years!

From the Casper Star

"The Wyoming Cowboys and Nebraska Cornhuskers have signed a contract for a three-game football series to begin in Laramie on Sept. 24, 2011.  The second and third games in the series are to be played in Lincoln, Neb., on Aug. 31, 2013, and Sept. 17, 2016."

Go Pokes!

RJ - Great news!  I think by 2011 we will have our football team back to more "normal", so it should be a good game.

I also read that Wyoming, Nebraska, N & S Dakota and Utah are the states with the lowest unemployment rates - Wyoming being #1 and Neb # 2.

2 bright spots here in the true mid-west!

Go Huskers!

We just got a new coach. Hopefully this coming season will be a big turnaround and we can finally get into some bowl games. He will be there for at least the first meeting unless he gets fired or quits because he has a 4 year contract. Your guy's team can stay as they are. Then maybe Wyoming will have a chance! Tongue

One reason why the unemployment rate is so low here, is the oilfields, They are not slowing down much with the economy as it is. Some sectors are like infastructure construction as the stock is low so the transportation companies cannot borrow money like they want. And the sad thing is that gas prices (Natural gas, not the stuf that goes in your car. Unless it burns natural gas I suppose.) are pretty good considering what they could be. It should start slumping come late spring though when the need to heat is going down.  But hopefully things will be in order and we can start building compressor plants again. The producers and drillers are slowing down like usual due to the BLM stipulations, but should be punching holes in full force again come May 1.

Hopefully they will lift the sanctions on the Oil Shale research. There is 1.1 TRILLION barrels of oil in the Green River Basin alone. At todays price(1-28) that is $45,452 Trillion worth of oil, more than Saudi Arabia ever had at thier peak. The only problem is getting it out. It is in a keragin wax and has to be heated to get it out. Mining is out of question because it is as deep as 8000' down. They are working on this Idea of Drilling a square and injecting nitrogen to freeze the rock as a wall, thne in side that drill more holes and inject steam to melt the wax and pump it out. But the problem is what kind of energy is it going to take to remove it that you get out of it, so it is really un economical. Infact at this point, you actually lose energy getting at it.

Actually...they are freshly retired from the Army and now live in Valley Falls, KS (bottom right corner).  Haven't heard from them yet so I hope they're ok.  Just got back from visiting my cousin in the Hospital.  She was having trouble breathing and went in.  Good thing: DR found a blood clot in the left lung.  She's expected to pull through and recover but is being held for testing and observation.  Kinda scary!

Pat reports that the three inches or so of snow she cleared off the driveway were fluffy--"like shoveling Splenda". I did the sidewalk after coming home from work and shopping; my snow had a little more "plowsam" in it. We might get a little more tonight.

Everything is set out on the warmer bar for supper tonight:  from the leftover roast, etc., to the sloppy joes, and the desserts.  Maybe later on tonight, we'll pop some popcorn, and fix some hot chocolate.

Didn't do much cutting as we don't have a chainsaw,

was mainly concerned about getting main sidewalk and

one lane of the street cleared, (snow plow had to swerve

around them)

limbs got moved to parking lot next door where they

can be cut up later. (especially when it gets a bit warmer!)

Al - in - Stockton--I had forgotten that the Coast Starlight was being detoured via Tehachapi, and when I was checking its arrival in Sacramento, I was wondering why it was listed as being due in at 9:30. I tried checking its due times at various stations south of Sacramento, and the messages were to the effect that it did not operate through those places on the dates requested. The detour explains it all.

Johnny

Johnny The Coast Starlight after leaving Sacramento did not board any additional passengers until it reached Bakersfield ran down the UP line former SP from Stockton to Bakersfield with a change of pilot engineers at Fresno. Amtrak does not have engineers that are  route qualified over that route down the valley or for that matter over Tehachapi. The NB had three P-42s and ten cars and the SB had two P-42s and nine cars. Very unusual for there only being nine cars and also three units this time of year. The train usually operates ten cars and two P-42s in each direction. No private varnish this time.

 Morning all!

11:16 this morning we have partly sunny and  25 degrees. The wind is blowing upards of 30MPH, so that drops the wind chill to around -5. Overnight the temps hovered near 0 and the pilot lite in my heater went out because of the wind. Took me almost 2 hours to get the thing to warm up and re light.

Yeah, Sarah got home from the firehouse around 11:15.

......This is the most snow we've received this season....The sky is very bright now and the sun is even peeking thru at times.  The system is now exiting out the east side of Indiana.  But it sure has left it's mark.  With the several inches yesterday overnight and yesterday in daylight hours and now what we received overnight, it looks to be 10 to 12" on the ground.

Paula, you mention several times now of Sarah at the fire house, etc.....I was thinking she was employed at CSX.....

Paula, I'm sorry you lost limbs off your pine tree. We have a maple in the back yard that lost some to snow a few years back when we had a heavy snow Christmas night (that time, we were without power for about a day and a half, and used, for the first time, a kerosene heater we had bought several years before), and last January it lost more in a heavy snow. The worst, in appearance, was when the company hired by the power company to trim limbs that were too close to the lines cut branches all the way back to the trunk. This maple was a sapling when we moved here in '74, and, now, it covers a large part of the back yard.

Below 20 this morning, no snow since Monday until just a few minutes ago--we expect 1-4 inches in the valley. May it snow deep in the mountains so we will have a good snowpack that will provide us with water next summer.

I'll take some of your good, warming lunch.
