Sorry, 'Mutt - the only way you're going to get the driveway cleaned with just the rope is if you use it as a whip....  Smile,Wink, & Grin

Missed the local auto parts store.  Gotta go into the "big city" anyhow, so I'll see if I can get what I need there.

The day's activities took a bit of a hit from a tragedy overnight.  A local FD ambulance was on the scene of a medical call when the patient brought out a rifle and shot one of the EMTs.   He had run with a number of area squads, so a lot of people are feeling the loss.

We all know there's an element of danger in what we do, but that's not one of the things we routinely expect around here.

More to do.

Deggesty:  When  I was a kid called the spring "spountain on the mountain". Is still there but I-26 has repaced US23 so have to get off at the top of the mountain.  BTW for those of you who don't know that 7.5 miles downhill was a 25 MPH nightmare surpentine and had many down hill runaways. I-26 still is a 6.5 % downslope northbound with many runaway ramps. About 6 miles I believe.

Thanks Johnny, I got That; just don't want to buy a snowblower

for 1000.00 dollars when a buck .99 will buy me a rope to clear off

our sidewalks. Sigh (or shovel that costs more, and takes longer to use!)

Good morning, all. It’s bright and sunshiny here, with a low in the mid-twenties.

Thanks for the sausage, Joe. Preparing grits is not as onerous as it used to be–soak the grits all night, and then stir for about twenty minutes as you cook. Now, you don’t have to remember to start the night before, and you stir for only about three minutes.

As to traffic light failure, it is amazing that around here most people do understand that it is treated as an all-way stop. The only problem comes when you have three to six lanes, including turn lanes, in each direction, and you are not sure when conflicting traffic has really stopped and it is safe for you to go. I certainly would not want to tangle with anything, much less an eighteen-wheeler.

We keep kerosene lamps as well as candles and a kerosene heater in the house, and we have a crank-powered radio.

Randy's mentioning driving in the left lane reminded of my trip home for Christmas my first year in college. About Erwin, Tenn., I caught a ride with semi driver who would have taken me into Asheville. However, at the Tenn.-N. C. line, there is a spring on the east side of the highway which kept flowing after the pipe under the highway had filled up and frozen–so the spring was flowing over the highway. In general, only the southbound lane was covered with ice, so the man drove on the left side–until we came up behind another truck whose driver had stayed on the right, and was stopped on the ice. We could not get around him, and had to stop. My driver was able to ask the driver of a car that came up behind us to take me on in to Asheville. I made it home the next day, after spending the night in Montreat, N. C., at the home of a college friend

Still about 170, 000+ without electricity; don't know when they will get it back; the powers that be, are saying a week +.

I can identify with that.   The Ice Storm of '98 yielded similar results, and we were square in the middle of it.  In some cases the repairs were so hasty that they're still dealing with them 10 years later.

Larry, that figure is down about 35, 000 this morning. (very glad we're not

one of them.)

Now can I buy just the cord for the snowblower, or do I have to

buy the entire thing? I'm sure the cord is cheaper!

4 Way Stops? Around here, most people have forgotten their

"Driving Manual" ( four blondes at a 4-way stop)

Not all the four-wheelers know what to do when the traffic lights go out, either (four-way stop).

More like they simply think "no light, no control, I don't have to stop!"  The issue can be self-correcting, though, when two like-minded drivers arrive at the same time....

We have the same problem here when the lights go out.

Nice and sunny here today, if cold.   Got lots of errands to run, so that's a good thing.

Breakfast to go, please.  I slept with BNSF all nite.  Even heard Amtrak come in from west around 4 am.  Didn't hear it leave to go to Omaha, tho.  Maybe they are all still at the depot sleeping in.

So will head out and go new chair shopping.  25 year old recliner now needs to rest.  Will give the yards a chance to get done sweeping out the dust from all the trains they ran and check in on them later today.

....Our start for the day is with bright sunshine in my eastern window and with a temp of 4.2 degrees.  Clear skies, and looks like calm winds out there.  Hope it warms up a bit today....Not sure how much of that it will do.

I have a temp readout on my start page here that gives me the reading in Paisley, Fl....Have some family there and it now reads 40 degrees.  That's about 35 plus miles west of Daytona.

That Ice storm must have really upset the power grid as Randy mentions down south of us a few days ago....We were lucky to have that go south of us.   We had our terrible mess like that back in 2005 in Jan....It looked like a massive huricane passed over us.....Tree trimmers were here from about 9 states to get us back in operation.  This time we were lucky....just a foot of snow.  Even that is unusal for us here.

Ah, home at last....

Had fun in Paducah and the surrounding area Thursday night, had to run the left lane on some of the four-lanes in the area, due to fallen trees.  Not all the four-wheelers know what to do when the traffic lights go out, either (four-way stop).

Got my W-2 in the mail, so probably will go have taxes done on Monday, see how much money I have coming back, though am doing good right now, finished up on all my debt last year.

Have to go help my sister this morning move a television at her workplace, it's one of those old monstrosities from the 60s, she can't move it herself.

Until then, will relax and enjoy breakfast.

Good morning, it's Saturday. Thanks for breakfast. Currently, 27 degrees and cloudy in Carolina. CW, when I was a child, I can remember hog killing time, and the sausage mill, mixing the peppers and other spices very well. Looking back, I even remember the making of lye soap by some folks who helped out. I can remember back to when I was in a stroller, and sometimes wax nostalgic. Everybody stay warm

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Joe, thanks for making the sausage patties.  Sometimes, it's a real bother getting the sausage all ground up, then having to make the patties, isn't it?  I can remember very well, Mama bringing in the ground sausage, and getting all the spices ready to put in it, and mixing it up well, before making the patties.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

I've started frying sausage, and there's also turkey bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs, grits, oatmeal, toast, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/milk gravy, bagels, bear claws, blueberry muffins, bagels, bear claws and buttermilk pancakes w/plenty of syrup (blueberry, strawberry, and maple).

Around 2, 3:00, I'll start making up the pizzas for tonight's pizza fest.

Our thermometer is showing 16.2 degrees outside, but according to the morning news, temps are ranging anywhere between the low to middle teens.  I haven't heard what the wind chill is this morning.  Supposed  to reach a high in the mid to upper 30s this afternoon.  So, we should start to see some of this ice melting.

Everyone enjoy breakfast/brunch, have a good day, doing whatever you need to do today, doing errands, or just 'chilling out'.

Carl, that's truly good news, that the polyps were benign. Keep the good work up, and get them out as fast as possible if they give a hint of giving trouble. For several years, I did not get a test that I should have, and my doctor was satisfied with the result of the occult blood test annually--until blood showed up a little over three years ago. As a result, I had a foot of sausage casing cut out, then went through radiation and chemo. (No hair loss; after the chemo was over, my hair and beard turned a little darker than they had been, but they are not back to dark brown and red, yet.) My blood test last week showed a CEA of 0.

Mostly sunny here today; it was in the low twenties, with no wind, this morning, so I had a brisk walk.

I think I have last year's tax returns calculated, and will send the money closer to the deadline (no non-interest paying loans to the government).

Paula, (or whoever gets to the kitchen first), more grits and sausage coming in the morning?

For our local area, they are saying as far as the power outage goes, this

IS worse than the "Hurricane" of Sep. 2008.  Don't know about other parts

We had a clear, cold day today--sun really brightened things but it was too cold to form any slush anywhere. Tomorrow, we may break the freezing mark, but it will come with wind and precipitation attached. Naturally, that will be the day for some outdoor errands after work.

UP says they're no longer hiring. We're supposed to have had some furloughs, but as far as I can see the most recent new-hires at our yard (this past October) are still working. I was training (or refreshing) a CRO yesterday, who'd been off since before Christmas, due to medical issues. We had plenty of work today; an extra job was put on at our end of the yard. The receiving-yard car count didn't go down too much, in spite of our work today. Yesterday, we had that yard almost emptied out, but I suspect that that was because some trains from the east were delayed by (to quote our President) "What--a little ice?"

Good news on the surgical front--polyps were benign.

Our cousin is still undergoing testing.  Nobody's exactly sure why/how many/if they'll come back.  From what I gather she's on some good medication that really gets her tired easily.

Larry,

The last time I had to use the blower I had to give it a "Horizontal Slam Adjustment" after thawing it out with some "colorful metaphors".  It started right back up...my theory is out of fear of the scrap heap!  Laugh

I talked to my buddy who hired on with the CP yesterday.  He had his GCOR test and got 97% on it which was the best in his class.  He was excited!

Thanks for the grub and I'll be lurking about for a while.

.....Sunshine blazing in my home office window here this morning....Had a skiff of snow overnight but that won't make any difference to the foot or so on the ground now.  17 degrees here this morning and we'll expect to see mid 20's this afternoon.

J....I envy you to already have all the 1099's, etc....ready to go with the income tax filing.  We need one or two of them yet and then, we are ready to turn it over to the tax man to do his thing.  Electronically file them and bingo in 10 days or so, the results.

So we're upon the weekend and we hope the big storms are few in numbers and perhaps they all go out into the Atlantic away from us.

Headed to do some shoping this morning and will try to find some of the little 3-D glasses to see that commercial upcoming over the weekend on TV....Football, commerical at end of 2nd qtr., I believe they said.  I have never witnessed 3-D program on a screen {theater}, as that was tried when Uncle Sam had me overseas many decades ago and hope to see what this effort might look like.  Might become more popular and some regular programs broadcast in that format in the near future.  We'll see....

Al - Texas and California are my two favorite go-to states for visits.  Spent quite a bit of time visiting the San Jacinto/San Diego/Anaheim area.  Christmas there always meant shirt sleeves and warm sun.  My husband who is from Downey but lived in SD said that a cold day meant long pants.

But I do still like the changing of the seasons - all except the winter one.

Got taxes filed.  Food in fridge.  Now ready to take on BNSF tomorrow and see if they still have anything left in the yards to run or if they will be bringing in all new.

Meant to tell you - saw CZ go through about noon last Saturday.  They are due in around 5 am.  Probably shocked a lot of people to go across Nebraska in the daylight.  No wonder no one knows where we are - they never get to see it in the daylight!  Ok - so there isn't a lot to see - unless you are a railfan.... Larry, I'm sorry, but I cannot resist asking, "Where can I find a snowblower starter cord that will take care of the snow if I pull it?"

Well....   There's a little more to it than that..... Smile  Beats spending a half hour or better bent over a snow shovel, though...

Actually, I just got the pull rope on the thing fixed.  Broke it last winter and had been relying on the electric starter.   That's OK, unless I stall the machine out at the end of the driveway, beyond the reach of the extension cord.

Cleaned a couple of inches off the driveway last night, and a couple more this morning.

It's still snowing.   And now they're talking a possible Nor'easter over the weekend.

Thanks for serving breakfast this morning, CW. It's a cold morning here in Sioux Falls and that hot chocolate you've got on the menue this morning sure sounds good. It's about 12 degrees above 0 here, and it is supposed to warm up to about 41 tomorrow afternoon.

I am still waiting for my brother-in-law to give some attention to my furnace. It's my understanding that he had to order a part for it. I shut down my furnace entirely prior to going to bed last night and the heat is now slowly coming up. When I paid my gas bill last month it was only $18.45. My most recent gas bill amounted to $107.00, which doesn't make any sense to me.

I am supposed to have the entire weekend off, both Saturday and Sunday, but I am afraid it's gonna be a little too cold here to do any serious train watching. I have some reading to catch up on and I've got the last few issues of TRAINS awaiting my attention.

Stay warm, folks!

Ray

Good Morning all it makes me cringe to hear your morning weather reports from back east and I hope you are all safe and sound. Here in the Central Valley the only snow we ever see is if we drive to the Mountains. Speaking of the Mountains the snow pack is only 36% of normal so it looks like the drought will continue in Golden State.I can't remember seeing Lake Shasta and several other reservoirs as low as they are. All of the weather systems have gone to the north of us through Washington and Oregon.  I lived in snow country for more years than I care to remember and to be honest don't miss it at all. Occasionally the thermometer drops to 32 degrees but that is brief and warms in the daytime to the mid fifties or better. That is winter in the central valley. As usual the farmers are complaining at the lack of rain and that they might have to curb there water use for the benefit of Southern California. Even Californians need something to complain about.

At least we can train watch in comfort year round.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  Current temp here in Louisville is about 27 degrees, and that's supposed to be the high today.  Temp's just not going anywhere today, to help get rid of all this ice and snow we have.

Coffee, hot chocolate, juices, and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, muffins, donuts (all the chocolate covered, cream filled, including the long john donuts, glazed, cake, and danish (apple, cherry, raspberry, peach).

We're getting a very light snow shower at 6:20 a.m.  It's so light, you have to look at the street light, in order to see it.  Supposed to be a dusting, to about half an inch added to the mess we already have.  Everybody enjoy your breakfast, have a good morning, keep safe and take care.
