Good cool morning to all.  Bright sunshine is blazing in my east window here now in the home office....Like that.  But the instrument indicated earlier, it was 24.1 degrees outside.  And to add insult to injury, we had a skiff of snow....{just enough to make the ground white before the sun hit it}......

All this talk about thermostats....We have 8 of them to deal with....Or maybe I should say, to help taylor the temp. in each room depending what room it is and temp desired.

Don't think we'll have any heat wave today....and probably will be on the chilly side all week even though the latter few days will be sunny.

Yes, Larry....it would be nice here too, to have some of that very high Indiana humidity found each Summer...to spread around a bit {inside}, when it is cold and dry outside in our Winters.  We've used humidifiers here at times in the past....One must hit a happy median so as not to get too much saturation and get it steaming up the windows.  Had that happen even with thermopane's and storms on the outside of them.

Lots to deal with - Jay - Grandpa Jay!  How nice for you!  And while you are train watching, take him fishing, too!  Shy

Q - congratulations!  You used the word median - in the right context!  Do you know how many people think the raised strip down the middle of the road is not only to run over, but called a "medium"?

And men have "prostrate" trouble?  They lay on the ground a lot?

My 3rd and final one - "elemenary" school.

Fingernails vs chalkboard!

Tree - I just checked on my weather station and we have 36' and 61% humidity.  Until really cold weather, we never get rid of the humidity.  But it is still chilly in here.  Or maybe my thermostat needs adjusting.  Now I know why old women wear sweaters in the summer!  Oh great!  Another unwanted milestone!

36 in the house?  No wonder you're cold!   (Unless that's Celsius...)

Really, though, even though the humidity outside is OK, heating systems tend to dry the air.  And unless you have a fairly new thermostat, it could be suspect, too.

Pick up a thermometer and hygrometer (humidity meter) for the house.  You may be surprised.  Moving the thermometer around the house might be enlightening as well.  Also, keep the thermometer at your usual activity level (ie, height) in the house.  If that's sitting down, that's where you want the thermometer.  You'd be surprised the difference in temperature between the floor and the ceiling.

And let me add "chimley" and "amblance" to your list.

Good afternoon, everyone.  And congratulations on the new grandson, Granpa Jay!!  I imagine you'll be introducing Little Nicholas to trains as soon as you can.

We had about 67 people show up for Produce this morning.  The center director got there just before 9 and opened the gym door so we could get in out of the cold.  Today, they brought us:  celery, romaine lettuce, yellow squash and 10 lb. bags of potatoes.  The only thing left  after we were through was the yellow squash.

On the warmer bar, for the rest of the afternoon and tonight, you will find:  Tuesday Mexican Fiesta.

1.  Burritos (beef, beef & bean, beef enchilada)

2.  Tacos (soft shell and hard shell)

3.  Enchiladas

4.  Chimichangas

5.  Fajitas

There is also:  Spanish rice, tortilla chips, and picante sauce, salsa, and con queso.

Regular list of desserts:  chocolate cake, yellow cake w/caramel icing, pies and cobblers, ice cream.

May you all have a good afternoon, and stay warm!!!!

Tree:  I went and got my trusty weather station out of our bedroom, which we don't heat (keep register closed or it gets too hot for sleeping.)  Anyway - I am in south bedroom with a sunny south window - which is great except on cloudy days.  My readings are 66 for temp, bar 29.9 and humidity about 66%.  But - we have, I am pretty sure - single pane windows - we face north (bedroom) and when wind blows it feels like a window is open.  Until landlord replaces windows.....we are SOL

I keep thermo - a new programmable one - at 67 (66 at nite)  If I get really busy, really, really busy - it is warm to the point of being too warm in the house.  But after dark, I am not all that active and neither is "he".  No chimbley (my Missoura heritage here) and amblance goes by here quite regularly.  (They are too expensive for us!)

i don't want to share this with everyone - but the best guage of how cold the house is, is the round seat in the bathroom) WOW

Excellent fix for those old windows - shrink wrap.  I think a five window kit runs around $10.  I love the stuff.

The kits come with double-sided tape.  Apply that to the window frame, put the clear shrink plastic on, then hit it with the hair drier.  Assuming everything stuck all the way around, the plastic gets tight like a drum to the point that you almost can't tell it's there.

If you've got blinds you'll have to either set them how you want to leave them or work in a way to adjust them (which I had to do in my bathroom).

Then, on a windy day, you can sit and watch the plastic bow in and out as it keeps the cold wind out of the house.

Come spring, you peel all the plastic and tape off and enjoy the warm air.

...Wow, Jen.....That compares similar to what Tom is calling his "ice house".  66 would feel just a little uncomfortable to us.  Bedroom is about 68 but the other rooms are at varying settings.  In here, {Home office}, it is probably 72 or a bit more....The carpet even feels warm when walking in with bare feet.  {Radiant heat in ceiling}.

Family room nice and warm too....Living room is seldom used....so probably a bit below 70 and so on....

And on the "chimbley"....we don't even have one.  Didn't want a fireplace when it {house}, was built...dirt and fire threat, and losing heat out it, etc....So just did without.

But that product Larry is talking about, sounds like it would really cure a problem with wind leaking around a window or even by creating a dead air space....less heat loss from cold on window....and it would feel more comfortable.....and possibly warming the seat.

Driver said something about trying it - we do have blinds and I do like to look out those windows, but if they are clear enough to see out of - it would be worth the effort.  Will have to look into it further.  Does it cover the casement, too?  I can feel a draft through the windows as well as around the casement.

I presume you mean the window frame.  If there's a gap between the wall and the window frame some caulk would be the answer.   I'd use clear.

The plastic is crystal clear, especially when it's shrunk.  You'll hardly know it's there.

I have mini-blinds with the rod to open and close them, and the cords to raise and lower them.  I leave them down and just open and close them.  I used some scrap cardboard and the double sided tape, figured out where the hole needed to be, reinforced the area with the cardboard and cut a hole that the adjusting rod pokes through.  It makes for a small air leak, but compared to the wind that blows through the unprotected windows, it's nothing.

Add some cord to roller blinds, with a small hole at the bottom, and you'll have them under control, too.

You'll probably make up the cost in your first month's fuel savings.

Tree - I will look into it.  This will be our pre-Thanksgiving/post-Thanksgiving project.  The living room windows have blinds like that - but we use those windows for light only.  They won't be a problem.  But the upstairs I need for light for my, ahem, house plants - 2 in number - and to look out.  But we will figure out something.  Didn't realize they made clear caulk.  Will look for that.

Driver will be excited - he can roam Menards, Lowes, Home Depot and probably a few other places.

Yeah!!

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  I hope you all had a very good night.  We are starting out this morning with temps in the low to mid 20s.  Very chilly when I went out on the front porch for the morning paper.  But it's supposed to warm up nicely today, even though I can't remember what our high is supposed to be today.Blush

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

You can choose from any of the following for breakfast:  bacon, eggs, sausage, oatmeal, cream of wheat, cooked rice, toast, biscuits & gravy, bagels, and bear claws.

Does anyone have any meal requests for lunch and supper?  (I'm kind of tired of the same ole menu; so, could any of you give me some suggestions, please?

You all have a good morning, and remember to take care and be safe out there.

......Still a gray morning here....Back about 8 am, it was 29 degrees as compared to 24 yesterday.  Might see some sunshine later today, according to weather watchers. Dry....No snow or rain.  It's in the 30's now as I just made a quick trip down to the P O and it didn't feel too bad outside.....Just a typical Late Fall morning.

Edit:  Gasoline price now in our area:  $1.78   Not bad.

Mookie, thank you for your suggestions.  Here's what I selected from your menu options:

1.  liver & onions; 2.  fried chicken w/mashed taters & milk gravy; 3.  tomato bisque soup; 4.  lentil soup; 5.  swiss steak; 6.  navy bean & ham soup w/oyster crackers;

Other side dishes:  peas & carrots; garden salad; steak fries (to go with the swiss steak); pork n beans; corn.

Plus, anyone can have a PB&J if you just want that.

Hi Joe!  Welcome back.  Glad you were able to get computer and/or computer problems fixed.  Computers are great to have, but they can be a pain in the neck when you need to get something done on one, and it decides not to work for you.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Hmmm, looks like we had a very slow night in here overnight.

Temps didn't go very far last night:  we're currently at 37 degrees, and our high today will only be about 40.  Supposed to be down to 35 around 5 p.m., and they say we just might see some snow flurries.  This is all thanks to a cold front coming down from Canada.

Coffee is ready, along with fresh oj, oj/tangerine, pineapple juice, and apple juice, hot chocolate, and hot water for tea.  There's also hot cider available this morning.

On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns or tater tots (whichever you'd like), homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy.

You all enjoy your breakfast, and have a good morning.

Good morning CW and thanks for breakfast. Currently 30 degrees and clear in Carolina this morning, and for once, the inside temp is OK, even though the wife is complaining about being hot..... CW, how about BarBQ ribs/chicken for supper tonight with white rice and red gravy. Not too much to report this AM, so everybody take care

Good morning. I've been up for a little better than an hour here, and currently we have 29 degrees here in Sioux Falls, I don't think it will get much warmer than this today. We have a 40% chance of getting snow tomorrow.

I like Tom's idea of having BarBQ ribs/chicken for dinner tonight, CW, I'll second that. And I think I'll go ahead and make a couple gallons of homemade vanillia ice cream for dessert tonight.

In addition to caramel syrup, perhaps we can get Mookie to contribute a package of Orrio cookies.

High of 74 degrees yesterday, expected high of 38 today. Mookie managed to send the weather west before it goes east. Fire up the hot cider.

Another day of tip-toeing through the UXO (unexploded ordinance) on the former Lowry AFB bombing range today doing a precise level circuit in freezing rain. This won't be fun. Just another day for surveyors doing precision work in near impossible conditions.

Boy youse guys are running me ragged.  Weather for the Chicken, racing for my coffee cup (smelled the chocolate) ordering groceries....

Wonder if I should also head for Chickenland and wait for him to catch me a "fish"....

Sunny but deceiving - very cold this morning.  Said Fri am would be 10 above.  This is fall, not winter.

CW - I think a blanket for lunch would be apropos.  Even heard that Houston got a little brisk!

And Amtrak CZ woke me at midnite.  They still run the engines with the distinctive whistle, so I can always tell when they are around.  And on time!  Ears still run well, too!

Tom and Ray, I like your suggestions.  So, I'm getting the barbeque ready for the ribs and chicken.  And yes, we'l have white rice and red gravy to go witht them.  Sounds like a very  good meal to have today.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Ray, how're you coming with the ice cream?  Think I could use a bowl of that right now.

Is there any other dessert you all would like to have with the ice cream?  Pies, cobbler, cake?  Just let me know, as I have several of each in the freezer, ready to take out and thaw.

Mudchicken, this time of year, I always keep hot cider ready for you and anyone else who would like some.

Mookie, that blanket is going to sound very good later on this afternoon!

36 degrees here now....and believe we have a mention of snow flurries sometime today possibly.  Doesn't really look like it now but it is overcast but pretty bright.

M C....What are you surveying on a former bombing range that would be pertaining to RR's.  Wow, if any construction would happen in that environment with heavy equipment one would wonder how that could happen safely....
