Got an inch or so of sleet last night.  Decided to take the Dal for his nightly walk in it.  There was just enough wind that it hurt when it hit my face.  Haven't been outside this morning, but work is on a two hour delay, and most of the schools are closed, so it must be nasty.  Think I'll grab some breakfast and crawl back into the waterbed for some extra rest...

I am a "no snow" today.  Blowing it all east!  Brrrr.  Glad I don't live around Joe or Tree - their weather is worse than ours.

CW - Milk is good - they put it in Colorado Bulldogs...(that's not all that they put in Colorado, either!)

Oh yes - when we train watch, people go by and look at us like we are nuts.  So I made up a sign that states:  "Bird Watching".  One or two people get the drift but now most of them just glance over and figure that is what we are doing.  One lady drove by and cracked up!  My kind of people!

Down here in Austin, TX it is...well let's just say it is not as cool as back home in Aurora, IL.

I saw about ten minutes of the TX weather on my way from the airport to my hotel where I will be until Friday afternoon then BACK TO REALITY in Illinois.

Heard a UP freight coming through town last night  but could not see it from my hotel window...aaaarrrrgggggghhhhh.

....Recorded 1/2" of sleet / snow, etc. for what happened here yesterday.  Yesterday morning it looked to have potential of a bad day....Wondering about freezing rain and wind and power lines, but we did pretty good.  Some slide off's on local highways, etc...but no loss of power in our area.  Lights did blink, but with the wind and ice I suppose that could be expected.

29 degrees {and rising},now late morning as I type, and overcast but very light and maybe some sun this afternoon.  So...I'd say we did pretty good compared to what passed thru and north of us and on east.

I keep a running tally of the season's snow fall here in the {home}, office and so far we've recorded 24 1/2" of the stuff.  The good thing is we can see the light at the end of the tunnel....Believe it's a bit of sunshine and things green thinking about growing.

I don't know about her neck of the woods, but over here in CR we've got mostly crows, pidgeons, and sparrows, with a few cardinals for color.  Occasionally we'll see something else flying around, such as last Sunday while I was out chopping ice I looked up and saw a bald eagle fly over.

It's snowing hard again here, and it's a pretty good bet that we'll end up breaking our all-time snowfall record this season, as we're only 3 inches away from it at this point.

Joe, Quentin, and others:  glad to hear you made it all right, through all the mess yesterday/last night!!  Right now, Louisville has sunshine, and doesn't feel too bad out.  I went to the grocery this morning, and it as very breezy and chilly.  Now, doesn't feel so bad outside.  Not sure what current temp is, though.  Amazing how the weather can change, in an hour and a half, spent in the store, trying to decide what meat and veggies to get.

For lunch today, you've got open-face turkey *** sandwiches w/mashed taters, gravy, cole slaw, peas & carrots.   And there is also some meat loaf, mashed taters, gravy and shelly beans w/onion.

If any of you has a suggestion for supper tonight, please let me know, so I can get started on it this afternoon.

You all have a great afternoon, take care, and see ya later.

I'm already sleepy - turkey's gonna put me right under my desk!  I'll take a "large" serving, please.Dinner [dinner]

The winter storm passed without major consequence.  The ice they threatened didn't happen around my place.  I do have a couple of inches of sleet in my driveway, though, and it's like driving on ball bearings.  I had to back back into my garage and get a running start to clear the driveway this morning.  Hopefully the snow blower will deal with it this afternoon after work.

How about a few pots of chili for supper?  Regular, high-test, and "call the fire department."

Since I had breakfast so early, and work so hard (?), I shall have meat loaf with the taters and gravy. I love vegies so the peas & carrots, plus the shelly beans w/onions. Now in my life I have never heard of shelly beans, at least by that name, so please 'splain' them to an old country lad.

We have in addition to the above - hawks and kestrels at watch site, juncos, turtle doves, cardinals, blue jays, and house wrens in the back yard (along with the always present sparrows and squirrels) and during the summer the robins.  Pretty much just garden variety birds.

But the whooping cranes are due any time now and that is always a big deal in central Nebraska!

Haven't seen any "Whooping Cranes"  around for a long while; but does remind me

of a true story that was going on in our area; seems there was a lost crane, on

it's way to Florida, via escort of an Ultra Light Flyer.  (movie, Fly Away, Home).

Not seen any of our regular birds (cardinals, etc.) since last autuum  (Probably

since we haven't put food out in the feeders.)  Seems blue jays and some of the

rest are ignoring us this year.  Mook:  what's a kestral?

Mutt - they are a bird much like a hawk but smaller.  They are fun to watch since they catch mice and an occasional pigeon and then take it up on top of a phone pole and dine.

We have peregrine falcons too - I guess Omaha has at least a pair and we had a pair.  They like our scary, tall buildings and nest and raise their young way up there.  (shudder)

Dale - we have a nested pair of cardinals and I don't know what they do with their offspring each year.  Maybe I can get the kids some directions to your house....Smile [:)]

Some folks may know the kestral as a sparrow hawk.  One and the same.

I have dozens of birds at my feeders every day - they'll easily go through a gallon container of black oil sunflower, and some days even more if I put it out.

Blue jays,

Mourning doves (sunrise/sunset),

Cardinals (also usually sunrise/sunset, I've had upwards of a dozen at one time),

Chickadees (if you are patient and it's not too cold, you can hold seed in your hand and they'll eventually get brave and come get some),

Nuthatches,

Woodpeckers (downy and hairy - they like suet),

Redpolls,

Purple finches,

Gold finches,

Sparrows (I don't know all the varieties),

Snowbirds,

An occasional cedar waxwing,

And who knows what I've missed.

We have had a young red-tailed hawk near the feeder - probably eyeing dinner.  That was some time ago.

One thing I've found is the bigger the bird, the bigger 'chicken' they are.  They'll scatter first.

I've thought about putting up a webcam, but that's a ways off...

Larry, thanks for your suggestion for supper:  Chili it is:

1.  Very mild chili

2.  Medium hot chili

3.  Very spicy

4.  Call the fire department, with five gallons of water per person to put the fire out!

Think I'll have a bowl of 3 & 4 mixed together for my supper!!

Our current temp is in the mid 40s, with very light breeze.  By Friday afternoon, the early predictions are for 1 to 3 (?) inches of snow for us.  Saying it will be a wet, heavy snow.  Not looking forward to that, at all.

I guess Cincinnati Chili is part of #1 - I'll get a bowl of that. (CW had that pot of spaghetti on the boil for that reaso I assume)

3-4 inches of snow here today - I don't want to be anywhere from Pueblo to Raton to Amarillo tonight. They get the pounding this time.

Mook, Larry, thanks for the info on kestrals, I'm not familiar with that name; the other yes.

We have a pair that lives on the Kennedy Bridge (I- 65) and they've had to postpone

painting of bridge several times because it interfered with their habits, and habitat.

I would say that we've seen "Louisville Cardinals" several times already, but I won't;

seems we are more of Cat's fans than birds.

MC,

You got to be more precise than "Cincinnati Chili". It's always "Skyline" time in Cincinnati. Had my cheese coney fix today for lunch.

As for cardinals, our secretary at work and I was watching a cardinal at work today in the trees outside the office.

Good Thursday morning, everyone!  We're currently at 30 degrees, and the temp is supposed to reach 50 today, then by this time tomorrow morning, the temp is supposed to be in the mid 20s.  They have just given an update for tomorrow's forecast:  we could see three to four inches of snow sometime tomorrow morning, just in our downtown area.

Mudchicken, I do make my chili w/spaghetti.  Mutt's chili, which we make most around here, has the wagon wheel pasta in it.  Sometimes on his chili, I get a bowl, slice some cheese on time, melt the cheese, and mix it into the chili.    Depends on what kind of mood I'm in.

Coffee, assortment of juices, hot chocolate, and hot water for tea are ready.

On the breakfast warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy, homemade buttermilk biscuits, oatmeal, toast, bagels and bear claws.

You all have a good morning, and take care.

HA!  I scoff at all you warm weather bunnies.  You who have flip-flops and short-sleeved t-shirts and keep your doors and windows open during the day!

I took the garbage out (about 20 feet) to the garbage can this morning in stocking feet and NO coat!  And it was 15 degrees above!  HA again.  See what a hardy stock we true midwesterners are!  Kisses [:X]

Tree - I want to come to your house to birdy watch.  Sounds like you have our birds and a few more.  We mainly feed the squirrels because there are a lot of birdy feeders in our neighborhood and it keeps the squirrels out of them.  And the birds just come along for the cleanup.  Starlings haven't found us yet; the park two blocks away has some turkey buzzards and lots of crows.  But we try to keep nesting birds happy in our yard and the crows can pick up the slow squirrels on the busy street in the front of the house.  Eastern Nebraska has eagles, but they are found south of us in the warm waters of the power plant.

More meetings today.  I have about 14 mos of meetings at various times ahead of me, so will be in at odd hours.  Sometimes only for a couple of minutes to check on items.  Then off again.

Must peek in fridge - want something really different for breakfast today.  Maybe cold Chinese I hid a while back?  Yum....it is good hot or cold.

5;00 AM in AZ and going to be 60+ today at 5600 Ft elevation (my home).

CW, eggs, biscuits and sausage gravy for me with juice and coffee. I always have an appetite after reading you meal postings. Thank you!!!

MC, thanks for the info about the RI plans. Not very practical for the 20's and 30's. Sounds more like dreams of the 1880's. Where is Ramsey? I don't remember that location.

Ms Mook - We have several regular squirrel visitors, too.  Used to have rabbits visit, too, but the combination of the fence and the resident dogs keeps them out now.  There are lots of turkeys around, but I haven't seen them 'in town.'

The great ethanol push has nearly doubled the price of sunflower seed, but I still keep it stocked because the birds are just great to watch.

Got a phone call from the son at midnight last night.  DIL is safely ensconced at Labor and Delivery and this doesn't look like a false alarm.  Waiting for the phone call!

Early congrats Larry!

I feed birds and squirrels at my house.  The feeder for both is near Chace's (my cat) favorite window to relax in.  I can even tell when something is partaking of the feast: Chace will grunt and attempt to meow when there's something there that he thinks he should be able to eat play with!

I'll grab some speise and commence the lurking...

Larry, please keep us informed on that situation so we can find out if you're an Aunt or

Uncle!! Definitely hope all is well.

If anybody wants a few extra squirrels, please come to Louisville and take them home

with you. We have an over abundance of them here.

Might have to get some sunflower seeds for the Cardinals, to "lure" them back here.
