What a difference a day makes, especially in March- we're currently at 19 degrees here, with about an inch and a half of fresh snow to replace the stuff that melted yesterday.  Sounds like we'll be waiting for awhile for the warm air to return.

Brian, that sounds like lousy weather for cleaning up a derailment. Did you hear about CRANDIC's accident down in Hills on Sat. afternoon? This was on the shortline/industrial Yahoo group.

Iowa City train derailment caused by snow, ice on tracks
Monday, March 03, 2008;
IOWA CITY - (The Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services) -- A buildup of ice and snow on the tracks caused yesterday's derailment of a Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway train, Alliant Energy spokesman Ryan Stensland said today.

The train was pulling 12 cars loaded with salt. A locomotive slug and one salt car left the tracks about 4:30 p.m. near Old Highway 218 and Izaak Walton Road, south of Iowa City. No injuries were reported.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Hills Fire Department are assisting today in the cleanup of a small fuel spill, Stensland said. The train is expected to be rerailed today.

He added Riverside traffic could be affected by the process.

Jeff Woods, marketing manager of the CRANDIC railway, said the next step will be to repair the tracks after the train is rerailed. "Service will resume after the track is fixed," he said. "Hopefully, that will be by the end of tomorrow."

Yep, been following that one on the Yahoo groups, and the local media had a video report on it as well.  It actually happened last Wednesday, the 27th.  Speculation suggests that ice derailed it- they were running slug-first down a seldom-traveled spur that was covered pretty deep.  In fact, it was cleaned up before the weekend was over.

55!

May not seem like an important number to some of you, but when it was 15 below less than a week ago, 55 degrees is like a day on a tropical island.  Never mind that it's mounds of snow, not sand dunes.

Considering that I talked to our weather guys at the airfield a little while ago and they told me that Wednesday wasn't going to be pretty,  I'll take what I can get!

Larry, for you all, and that area, I would expect that to be an important number this

time of year. We managed to make it to 70 today, but tomorrow's highs are supposed

to be in the mid 40s.

Good Tuesday morning, eveyrone.  Hope you all had a very good night, and are ready to start a brand new day.  We're still getting rain here, although they have cancelled the flood watch for our area.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot tea are all ready, and on the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, oatmeal (peaches & cream), toast.  Figured with all the rain and or snow some of us are getting, they's like a hot, stick to your ribs breakfast this morning.

Checking attendance this morning:  where are Mookie, mudchicken, Larry, Tom, Joe, and everyone else?  (I have talked to Duff.  They are all doing well. She has been extremely busy with little Sadie, and hasn't been able to get online much. )

Dan, guess it's because I'm only 4 ft. 6 in, and 128 lbs.  I'm easy to (under )overlook.Wink [;)]  I'm always being told "I didn't see you there!"

Our current temp is about 41 out, and very breezy.  Guess I'd better wear my heavy coat to do Produce this morning.  Going to be a nice day to stay inside and start on spring cleaning after I get back from  Produce Tuesday.  Do you all want this to be Mexican Fiesta Day, Pizza Day, or something else?

We set a new record high yesterday at 58.  Today we pay for it, with a winter storm warning containing freezing rain, sleet, snow, and who know what else.  The ice issue is expected to be significant - branches and wires down, etc.

Gotta pick up some milk and I'm good.  If things are too bad, I'll be at the fire station anyhow.

Bearclaw and tea.

Dan, that's one of the reasons we don't go out together much; she gets lost in crowds!

(I'm 5'10")

Do we need to put out an A.P.B. for Mookie?, or is she M.I.A. or P.O.W.

(although I'm finding her rocker quite comfortable!!)

Joe, thankfully we don't have that situation here; but are there "goal nets" on your drive?

I could borrow one of Sarah's hockey sticks and see if Matt wants a game.

I'll bet the truck driver was saying something like "I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN...WHOOPS...I KNOW I CAN'T!"

....I realize the one responsible when driving is {supposed to be}, the driver....But, as often as these non standard places seem to "trick" many who drive under them, one would think at least, signage...with appropriate visual warnings should be in place....Attention getters...!

That 11' 6" sign is on the small side and has no eye catching appearance to it as I see it in the photo.  But, especially in the case of this location......Wow.....Not even close.  One wonders what the driver was doing.

...Boy, they have been talking about this freezing rain, sleet, whatever since yesterday afternoon.  Temp right now at our location:  34.3 degrees....So it's close to being able to do something slippery.

Right now we're headed into the Muncie town as I have new glasses to pick up....and then breakfast, hopefully if the weather is not too threatening.

Valid points all.  When I lived in Philadelphia back in about 1980 I recall how many times truckers would come upon a similar undepass and see the clearance signs clearly indicating the specifics and fell they had a couple inches to spare...only to find out the hard way that the City of Philadelphia had recently put a inch or two of fresh asphalt on the street under the bridge and then OUCH!

Had 60 people today at Produce.  Did not get much delivered today; just lettuce, oranges, potatoes and strawberries.

Today will be Tuesday Mexican Fiesta Day, with all the regular Mexican food items on the warmer bar.

Now, I'm heading to the bar, to do a small load of laundry, and clean the floor.

....Ice is now gaining headway.....Temp here: 31.3.  Rain still falling, and turning to ice as it hits.  If it continues with something, sure hope it changes over to snow.  Would like the power lines to stay in place.  With our ice storm of a few years ago, the big stuff fell then, and much trimming right after that occured too.  All that has helped us when we get one of these or worse to keep power lines up.

Don't see it on street surface yet....Deluded salt solution helping there even with the temp drop of a couple of degrees.

had several such "rescues" today!. (people Standing on vehicles, not stuck in them!)

I try not to be bored.  It leaves marks.

Tired I've been too much of lately.

Latest word on granddaughter is "any time now."  Better start packing my bags - I'm expected in MD when she's born.  Won't make it for the delivery, but proud papa has mentioned wanting to be able to take Dad to nursery at hospital and point out the new arrival.  Not sure if I'll be able to get there for that, but I certainly won't be a burden at the house once the baby comes home - at least I can cook...

I will miss the Mexican Fiesta tonight. We are in a monthly supper club and will be at the Red Lobster. But count on me for breakfast, Paula. Whatever you set on the warming tray will get me started in the AM.

I will say goodnight now.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone!  Think I'm semi back to 'normal' this morning.  Hopefully, I won't be "heading to a bar", when I meant that I'd be heading to the kitchen, and laundry room, to do laundry, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor!!  Oh well, at least I probably gave you all a good laugh yesterday!Blush [:I]  Think the milk was kind of strong, if you get my drift!

Coffee, juice, hot chocolate and hot tea are ready, and on the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage links & patties, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, tater tots, oatmeal (peaches & cream or maple brown sugar) , toast, and bagels and bear claws.

Hope Joe will be able to make it in this morning, and anyone else who got ice yesterday.  Looks like we will be getting snow sometime Friday.  Don't know yet how much, or how little snow we're to receive.  (Hope it's very small amount!)

You all have a very good morning, take care outside, and be careful out there!!

Good morning Paula and thanks for having breakfast ready. It's 4:15 in AZ and I could not sleep so here I am ready for coffee, some oatmeal and a bear claw (or two).

Dinner with friends at the Red Lobster last night was great and our favorite server, Andrea, took good care of us for which she was amply rewarded. Be back later!!
