...I believe we've dodged another weather system....!  Forecast of anyway from 3 to 8 or so inches of snow and as of this morning I must almost stretch it when I say we recieved 1" overnight and really it's about finished for this area and moving on.....

Almost forgot how low our morning temp was....Believe it was 17 above.  Right now:  22 and pretty bright but overcast.

We too can experience extremes of weather here as they do out on the Plains.....Very hot and humid....or just simply very nice conditions and  not very serious Winter.....and at times very serious Winter conditions.  Avg. annual snowfall here:  About 27".  Area elevation helps to control some of that:  937' at the airport.

We can experience very cold conditions for brief time period....Since we've been in Indiana I suppose the coldest we had here. {But we were in Florida}, was reported to be as low as -30 plus....!!

And no frozen pipes from it.  Smartly, I had let heat in both bathrooms and kitchen remain at about their normal level in our absence.  Thermostat in each room.

.....Just a diner comment across the counter:  Our fair city of Muncie is showing pretty serious signs of how the economy downturn is effecting the area.

In the past 2 months we've lost 5 restaurants in our town....!  Another one listed in our morning paper.  Granted, we seem to have many and they keep building more but for those who say high fuel prices, etc....and all the rest is not effecting people's lives, I believe are in denial.  Believe we're into serious trends for a while.  Here, along with that, 2 very large manufacturing plants have been effected.  {Of course, some of it is changing economies}.  Large Chevrolet plant is now rubble.....and the BWA plant will be open for another year yet and then....it's gone...!!  Has been in operation for about 107 years and at one time employed 6,000 people.   All this has to be making a serious down trend in available spending monies.

I had mentioned just recently I thought rail traffic is down a bit too, and then recently in an hour I witnessed 4 thru trains passing.  But I still think rail traffic is not as much as it enjoyed last year.

Hey Quentin, I hear what your saying! The dreded "R" word is showing signs in many places around the country like your city. And when big companies move out or close up shop, it's the smaller ones that supported them that end up closing too, and the people who worked there move out as well, causing a ripple effect. I believe your take on the price of gas has many people thinking twice about making extra trips and curbing their entertainment dollar too!

Don't get me started on the state of our health care system.... Banged Head [banghead]

SoapBox [soapbox] over for now....

What's for lunch today?? Dinner [dinner]

....Yes, Ryan.....I know Jean and I think how we drive to our daily routine stops now and not just casusually drive without proper planning how we get there.

Yes, healthcare subject....A total story {and a long one}, in itself.

Well, since no one has requested anything special for today, guess we'll stick with our TUESDAY MEXICAN FIESTA.  On the warmer bar:  tacos (hard & soft shells), burritos (beef & bean, and beef enchilada style, Spanish fried rice, enchiladas, quesadillas, mild & medium salsa and con queso, and non-alcoholic strawberry margueritas.

Desserts:  just the regular chocolate cake w/chocolate icing, yellow cake w/caramel icing, and white cake w/white icing.

Listening to the people running the snow blower over the parking lot and sidewalks, across the street from us at the Baptist Church.  Thankfully, only one person rang our doorbell this morning, around 9, 9:15, wanting to know if we'd have Produce today.  Told him I didn't think so, as I'd not seen anyone show up, especially the two ladies who are in charge of it.

You all have a good afternoon, stay warm, and take care!!

Mexican fiesta sounds delish!

They are threatening us with upwards of a foot of snow overnight.  Better get up when alarm rings in the morning - instead of hitting the snooze several times.

The wind is out of the east, so I believe them.

We spent the weekend in Palm Springs, CA visiting some family from Minneapolis out snowbirding for the week.  (This is convenient to the former SP Sunset Route.)

Desert temperature was 81 degrees, low humidity, blue skies, slight breeze and nice mountain views.  Doesn't get any better than this.  My cousin talked to her son back in the Twin Cities and after hearing the weather report didn't want to get on the plane to fly home. Wink [;)]

Larry; I can feel your chill ( raising the V blind for more sun light)  + 68 deg. LOL   I would guess this winter is gonna be a nasty one for the books . Our winter is warmer than usual . Last week we had rain on 02 04 that turned to black ice at Poland Jct.Only 1 car hit the bar ditch . Speed limits are just a suggestion~~ even on a clear day.Can you tell me how the trains handle ice on the rail??  In the mean time you have any kind of day you want and keep warm.      Respectfully, Cannonball

Inch or so of snow on the ground already - and it's really fine - not wet, but still more dense, and heavier.  Definitely giving the snowblower a workout in the morning.

Ice on the rail is likely going to depend a lot on the hardness and the thickness.  In most cases the first unit is probably going to crush it off the railhead and life will go on as usual.

A bigger problem is ice in the flangeways at crossings.  It can derail you.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  Kind of slept in a bit this morning.  Just now getting in here.  Joe, thanks for fixing the coffee, juice and hot chocolate.  Got the beagles, bear claws and some biscuits, gravy, sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs ready now, and on the warmer bar.

For lunch today, there's Mexican Fiesta fare leftover from last night, and I've got a big pot of vegetable beef soup on that big pot on the stove.  Hope no one minds having soup and leftovers this afternoon.  Expecting company around 10 or so; if I'm not back in here right at lunch time, just grab a bowl, ladle and help yourself to the soup; or grab some of the leftovers from last night.

Currently we have 13 degrees here in Sioux Falls, and it is supposed to warm up to about 26 degrees later this afternoon. We had received three to four inches of snow in the last 72 hours. I braved the cold yesterday and went to work, although I really should have stayed home. I'm finally going to call my doctor's office and book an appointment with him. My sinuses are a mess and I've been coughing up a lot of crud. I went to bed Sunday night burning a fever, but at least THAT had broken. My supervisior at Wendy's knows I am planning on seeing my doctor and is not expecting me to be back to work until I've got all this crud out of my system.

Is there any soup here in the Diner? I did brew myself a crock pot of chicken noodle soup yesterday and it sure is good, better than what you would get in a can at the grocery store. I've got enough leftover soup to last me a few days.

A balmy 12 so far.  We're forecast to get 8" of crystalline white 'sun' tonight.  WOO HOO!

I seem to be in the minority for the requesting of more snow....

I'm guessing that the driver failed to see that 10'-8" sign posted just before the bridge.

Rain all night and today, more this afternoon.

Mexican sounds like a plan! Ole'!

Nice picture, Bob!  Reminds me of a couple of the ones we had around here back in November!!

We had a very nice visit with our friend this morning.  He was down here for his company, and was able to stop for a short visit.  Had to make a trip to their Jeffersonville, IN location.  Hadn't seen him in a couple of years, so was glad to see him.  And, of course, he's a railfan, so we did much train talking!

See you all are doing a good job on the soup, and leftover pizzas.  Think I'll grab me a couple of slices of supreme, and a small bowl of veggie soup while I'm in here.  Little bit hungry, right about now.

....It's good railroad bridges are made out of great strong material as this kind of incident seems to happen so much.

It should be a priority for railroads and State and County highway departments to get rid of such low clearance underpasses.  Of course money is always the obstacle.  Come to an agreement as to who bears responsibility to renovate the clearance and get it done.

My opinion of these situations:  Figure out a way to finance a program to bring the clearance up to today's requirements.  We can't afford war either, but we still do it.....

Of course drivers have a responsibility while they are in the drivers seat too.

Good evening, everyone.  Got some more soup on the stove, ready to be ladled into bowls, and fixed some sandwiches to go with soup:  pb&j, grilled cheese, open-face roast beef sandwiches and turkey sandwiches w/gravy.

Joe and Lance, have containers ready for you guys to take to work tonight.  Hope you enjoy!

You all have a great evening, stay warm, dry and take care.

CW,

It was a joy to come see you all again. And like I said, I could've stayed all day long with you guys. Just don't think the bosses would like it very well.

A great big hearty thanks to you all for everything you did today. It was very much appreciated.

I'm looking forward to come by again.

But next time let me know you're cooking breakfast before I stop by. lol

Top of the morning to all of ye. Currently, it is 33 degrees and clear in Carolina this morning. Another night of couldn't sleep and killed time on the wireless chasing some guy in the South Pacific. Larry, my blockhead bijon is, I believe, climbing the chain link fence. That means she is on lockdown again, probably permanently..... I think I will have some scrambled eggs and link sausage if CW can come up with some this morning, along with some very cold purple grape juice. Since I have been up all night, I would normally crash, but my nephew is coming over to try and start my prehistoric tractor, so it will be a spell before I can hit the hay. Yall stay warm and safe. Happy Valentine's day

Good Thursday morning, and HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to you all!!

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider, and hot tea are ready.

For breakfast this morning, I've made heart shaped pancakes for everyone, and there is also bacon and sausage, so you've got your choice to have with your pancakes.

Brian (KY), it was very much a pleasure having you here yesterday!  And, if you hadn't been working, we would have been proud to have you around all  day!!  And, you know you're welcome here anytime!!  And welcome back to the Diner!!

You all have a great day, stay warm and come back often!

Criminy!  Who turned the heat down?  Six inches of snow yesterday.  Got that cleaned out of the driveway so I could head for work, then discovered work delayed opening two hours (as did a number of schools).  Killing time, I went out to feed the birds and discovered that it was raining.  Temperatures stayed above freezing much of the day, then headed back down to below zero overnight last night.  Everything is frozen in place.

Bearclaw and tea.

Good morning everyone. And for what it's worth, HAPPY VALENTINES DAY. We've got 12 degrees here in Sioux Falls this morning and our wind chill is at -6 below 0. We had a little bit of freezing rain here earlier this morning.

I popped the antibiotic my doctor gave me at 7:00 last night and went to bed........and slept pretty close to 12 hours. I reckon I was overdue for a good night's rest. I was tested for the flu in my doctor's office yesterday afternoon and the test came back negative, so the doc informed me that I have a case of bronchitus. I am now taking the generic form of Biaxin. Has anyone else been given the same drug before for stuff like this??

CW, pancakes, pork sausage links and bacon sound pretty good to me. I'm starving!

Can't speak to the specific antibiotic, but I'd be remiss if I didn't remind you to take it all.  Too many people quit taking such medications when they start feeling better, which just makes it harder to kill the germ next time.
