This year Menard's went smoothly as well as WalMart. Christmas spirit ruled the day. I enjoyed the nippy morning with clear skies & the full moon setting in the west.

I was one of the lucky ones doing the chauffering around at 3 am...Black Eye [B)]

Fiancee's car wouldn't start so off we went.  Drove north on US41 past Neenah.  Saw Kohls at 3:40 AM.  I'm guessing there was at least 1500-2000 people in line.  It got worse!  We got to Appleton around 4:15 and tried to find her cousins near Target.  The lot was full and people were lining up on the highway to get to the lot.  We decided to go to Home Depot (DeWalt 18v cordless drill/2 batts/charger -> $96!  Cheaper than $210 so why not?) so I could use up a gift card from my birthday back in October.  Anyway...we were the 3rd/4th person at that store.  By 5:15 there was ~350+ behind us.  Some folks got pretty rowdy.  One fight even broke out there.  One of her cousins called us from Menards.  Apparently there was a fight there too, but much more one sided.  Someone cut in line and the people in line complained to store staff.  Store staff asked the cutter to go to the back and was told where to stick that idea.  Another customer then said the same thing and the cutter took a swing at the guy.  He missed.  The guy in line didn't.  The cutter was knocked out cold!  All this for material things...the holiday isn't about that stuff...but I'll stay off the Lava Box...

Anyway...after we got my DeWalt (named after you Mutt?  LOL) we decided to try and find my fiancee's cousin at Target near the Mall.  We found her and Misty got out to ride with her as I had to work at 8 this morning.  On the way out of the lot I witnessed a 4 car pileup happen.  Two were racing towards a parking spot and two were tailgating the two racing to the spot!  Not good, but nobody hurt.

Next year I'll just stay home and sleep....

Joe, glad you & Matt got the decorating done.  Haven't heard of any "mishaps" around the local malls & stores here; I know several years ago, when I was still at KMart, I almost got knocked down by customers!!  Not missing the crowd and rush there, today, at all!!

Pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausages are ready, and on the warmer bar.  That should warm everyone up, who are getting ready to go shopping, railfanning, etc., for the afternoon!

Thanksgiving leftovers will be on the warmer bar, tonight about 6, 6:30.

Good Friday morning to one and all!  Sacto Guy, thanks for putting out breakfast, and making the coffee!!

Tom, don't know about all the others, but I wasn't really taking and R&R day:  just moving too slow this morning.  Guess I overdid myself yesterday, doing all the cooking that was left to do.  Think they put the wrong weight on our turkey ***.  I can get a 7 lb. turkey *** in our Crock Pot, and still cover tightly with the lid.  That 6.3 pounder would not fit at all.  So, had to use the oven.  Today, I'm not planning on doing much of anything!!  Maybe find some holiday movies to watch, and do my leg exercises.

Some of our patrons may be doing like Spokeyone Bob, and chauffering around loved ones to all the After Thanksgiving Day Christmas shoppers, looking for the best bargains and prices around.  Or, maybe they all decided to just sleep in.

Tom, I'll be putting pancakes on shortly.  We'll make that the lunch menu, with your choice of sausage patties or turkey bacon, and scrambled eggs.  See you all in a couple of hours.

Morning to all. I guess most of you are on R&R from yesterday. We has storm warnings most of yesterday that never did materialize. Having been hit by lightning physically, once is enough and I basically hid most of the day. Currently 47 in Carolina with a proposed high of 60 and no rain again. CW, reckon you could rustle up some thick buttermilk pancakes and maple surple and I will be by shortly. Thanks

Tom

Good morning everyone! (Puts out big pots of coffee and hot water for other warm beverages, and lays out a spread of doughnuts, bagels, danishes and bear claws)

I have some leftover Honeybaked Ham from last night's Thanksgiving dinner at my cousin's house and I'm going to make a ham casserole today. Dinner [dinner]

We just had a skiff of snow here. I heard Des Moines got lots of snow. We drove down to Peoria today for big dinner with Barbara's daughter and son inlaw. I'm stuffed. Then off to the stores very soon with my little sisters. They are shop-a-holics and I have a truck.

Evening all.....

Got done with dinner at mom and dad's a little while ago, been a long day, had to run a load of booze up from Chicago to Milwaukee, then deadheaded home.  Was nice of the shipper to come out and give me a hand swapping trailers at 8am, got home just before noon, and will head out tomorrow for points unknown.

Well, really tired, so off to bed, maybe catch everyone before I head out tomorrow.......

Quentin, glad to hear you all had a very nice Thanksgiving!  We finished eating around 5, and we are all stuffed! (And none of us overate!!)   I even took about a 45 minute nap.

Hope everyone enjoyed your Thanksgiving meal, and didn't overeat!  Everyone have a great evening, and see you all tomorrow.

...Hi Walt....Just returned from our "meal"....Family total here, 5...We went to Ryan's...Worked out very well.

We did see 2 or 3 snowflakes {first this season}, right before we left but nothing become of it.  Must have been a way out edge of the Lake effect snow they were talking about.  We're quite a distance from the Great Lakes and we get very little of the Lake effect stuff...

38.5 degrees here now.  We too had rain overnight.  Needed it too.  My yard is still trying to recover from all Summer's drought.

Our meals were good...Everyone satisfied.  Didn't overeat either.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday.

Quentin, your forecast sounds about like ours, except we're about 2 degrees warmer.

At least it's not raining like it was last night, I think we got a bit over an inch in an hour.

Hopefully "Mr. Turkey" will be ready shortly, it IS  time to eat!! Dinner [dinner]

Brian, glad to hear you all made it safely!!  Hope your return home will be just as safe!!  Driving on snow and ice is no fun at all!!

Thanksgiving Dinner is coming right along.  About 2:30, I'll start peeling potatoes, to boil and then mash (or smash, as Mookie calls it), and put the dressing/stuffing in the oven.   The shelly beans are already cooking on the stove top.   Being in the kitchen all morning, I missed seeing Santa make his appearance in the Macy's Parade.  Oh well, better luck maybe next year.

....That's nasty {snow and ice}, for folks traveling for the holiday.  Our statistics for our Turkey day here:  Temp now...40.5 and dry and overcast.  Hope it stays that way.  Lake effect snow is a threat for northeastern Indiana but it rarely reaches down south this far with that.  Maybe we'll luck out.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, from my Mom's computer in snowy Prior Lake, MN!  We made it here last night OK, in spite of some nasty slippery conditions from the light snow on I-35 which had several people ROLLING their vehicles in the medians and ditches Shock [:O].  Not a pretty sight.  Looks like we have about an inch on the ground here.

Almost time to enjoy the feast- I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.  TTFN...

While I don't know which year it was that the Holiday Inn hotel chain was established, one interesting thing that I will mention is that in 1978 the innkeeper of our downtown Holiday Inn here in Sioux Falls had asked my father to come and work for him as a sales agent. And this my Dad did, for about 2 years.

....What year did the Holiday Inn folks...{the hotel people}, establish the "name" for their hotel chain....?

I'd like to have 10 bucks for everytime we stayed in one.  In fact, in my avatar pic....If I woud turn my head to the right, and look down about 700 hundred feet I'd see the Holiday Inn Hotel in downtown Johnstown we have stayed in many times.

Best wishes to all on this Thanksgiving day.

Good morning, and a HAPPY THANKSGIVING to everyone out there! Cherokee Woman is right when she says we have so much to be thankful for. I myself should be counting my blessings; my health is reasonably good, I'm still living in my own home and I am still gainfully employed, just to name a few.

I am getting ready to bake cinnamon bread for my family's Thanksgiving dinner and all of us, I figure about 14 or 15 people, will be gathering at my sister's house for dinner this afternoon

Tomorrow is the traditional beginning of the Christmas season. As much as I would like to send a Christmas card to everyone who reads this forum, I can't do that for the simple reason that I lack a list of names and addresses. But a year ago when I thought about doing this, I was struck with an idea.

My Dad, Ray Loftesness Sr. was a radio broadcaster and musicologist who spent 55 years in the radio and television industry. Dad is best remembered for a Christmas radio program that he put together himself and went on the air with for the first time in 1936. The name of his Christmas radio show was "Holiday Inn". In 1952 the big Holiday Inn hotel corporation filed a lawsuit against my Dad, claiming that he was using their name without their consent. When Dad told the judge that the name "Holiday Inn" was derived from the motion picture "White Christmas" staring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, he tossed the case out. And my Dad and the Hotel corporation settled out of court with a gentleman's agreement.

Traditionally, Dad would go on the air at noon with Holiday Inn on Thanksgiving, and his two or three hour show would be aired by both KSOO and KELO every day through Christmas Eve. I am going to try to share some of my Dad's material with the rest of the forum members here in the Diner, albeit in printed form, and to do that I am spending a considerable length of time transcribing audio material from a CD to paper. There are two stories that my Dad would tell every year, they are both true, inspiring, heatwarming and heartbreaking as well. I am convinced that my endeavor will take up a lot of space in this forum, but if it generates a few smiles, it will be well worth the effort. This in effect, will be my Christmas card to the rest of you folks out there.

Later, I might be able to dub off cassette tape copies of Vol.1 of Holiday Inn to anyone who might want it.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there!!

Ray

Good Thursday morning, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING to everyone!!  Joe, everything looks great in here this morning!!  You've really been working hard this morning.

Think I'll get another cup of coffee, two pancakes, two sausage patties, and some scrambled eggs, then get busy with all this cooking!  Later on this morning, just before noontime, I'll make sure that some cold cuts are laid out for anyone needing a little something to tide them over.  The turkey and all the sides will be ready around  4 p.m. EST (and at our house, probably around 6, 6:30 EST).

Once again, HAPPY THANKSGIVING to everyone!  We all may complain sometime or another, but we all have much to be thankful for today, and every day!!  I know I'm very thankful for all my friends here.

Just dropping by to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all.   Been busy getting things tied down for  the winter.  Last chore was getting the snow blower ready to go.  Just in time for our 1st snowfall tonight, but it looks like the driveway is just warm enough to melt.  No problem.  All the best.

CW I'm sure I can scare up some extra venison steak/burgers/hotsticks for when they're needed/wanted.  I'll put them in the back of the freezer so they're ready whenever.

Happy early Turkey Day to all.

Hello!

Just thought I would pop in and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I'll be saying a few extra prayers tonight, thanking God for all of the wonderful things he has given me. My family, friends, a Catholic education, a warm house to live in, good food, and this great country all come to mind.

Looking forward to all of the good food tomorrow! Thanks so much for all the hard work you're doing to prepare Thanksgiving dinner, CW.

My mom and I went shopping for a Nativity Scene for our yard this evening. We got a real nice one with Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the three wise men, a donkey, a cow, and a stable. Should look nice once we get it setup sometime in the next day or two.

With that, I'm heading to bed.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Well, I finally made it back in here.  Sarah and I have been busy preparing things in the kitchen all afternoon, for cooking tomorrow.  I've baked biscuits and cornbread for my dressing/stuffing, and Sarah made cornbread stuffing, also.  Will get up in the morning, and put our turkey *** in the Crock Pot.

Got some more Chinese ready on the warmer bar for tonight.  There's also some beef pepper steak w/rice, included tonight.    While you all eat, and chat, or run the trains, I'll be busy in the Diner kitchen getting everything prepared to start cooking/baking in the morning.  So, just ignore all the noises from the kitchen, o.k?

Dan, glad you made it back safely.  Got anything for us?

Thanks Joe!  From the # of whistles I heard on the 17th CN sure had a parade of trains SB through Waupaca.  Too bad they were too far from my hunting spot to see them.  I could hear them quite clearly though.  I'm guessing about 25-30 trains all day.  Sure sounded great!
