This past weekend while driving from TX to CA, I saw a Northern Pacific extended-height gon at a steel recycling plant near Bakersfield, CA. Had to do a double-take to confirm it. Went by too fast to see a number or patch.

Traveling on the Canadian Pacific through Minnesota, 4 UP units on the point of a mixed freight. 3 of which were brand new SD90MAC-HII's and a GE in the middle of them. Couldn't believe my eyes when it came around the bend

and to top off the day... stopped at the Valley Forge rest stop on the PA Turnpike... place was loaded with Neo-Nazi's and Neo-Confederates... they didnt bug me any (guess being white, blond, and blue eyed helped a little) but rather freaky a times

Today I went railfanning for a short while. It was getting cloudy and I only had a few pics left on a roll that I wanted to get developed. I went to take pics of the bridge spanning the river between NLR and LR. While there I got to see:

UP 3508 (SD40-2R)
UP 3317

MP 642095
MP 642731
MP 640870
MP 641021
SP 323177

There were more cars but I just wrote these down.

The other day I took pictures of the Bearing Cross Railroad Bridge spanning the Arkansas River. If they turn out well I will submitt one or two to Railpictures and see if one will get accepted.

Then everyone can see the "lift" section which I think is neat. [;)]

For some reason it seems like there is a lot more NS power visiting the area recently. I see them but usually while I am on the way to work and don't have time to chase them and get any engine numbers. [:(]

Today at lunch - 2 Amtrak GP38's 720 & 724 with an Amtrak Caboose, 2 coaches and a dozen ballast cars, heading south on the NEC, through the Wilmington Amtrak station. I guess they were taking the coaches to the Amtrak complex in Bear, DE.

OK here is the order in which I saw a loco consist on the NS mainline which runs parallel to the PA turnpike. This is only 20mins away from me.
1. NS SD40-2
2. Dash-940C
3. UP SD70MAC (fresh paint)
This was an intermodel train w/ a very unusual consist. It also had DTTX reporting marks every car. Ever since then I've seen unusuall amounts of UP power on CSX, Amtrak, NS, and Conrail trackage. I wonder whats going on??

This morning, right past my office window

a short train with an old yard engine in #2 postion with the amber rotating light on top activated. About 20 or 30 cars including a crane on a flat car, and bringing up the rear was an old BN caboose in very very faded green.

And it was going like hell eastbound into Minneapolis

In the locomotive department, I saw a freshly painted CN SD40-2 with IC markings below the engine's number on the side of the cab. I've also seen a couple of SD90/43Macs in CEFX red and white.
In the car department, I briefly glimpsed an Erie Western box car in a southbound UP train. Imagine that! [8D]

Today I did some railfanning and as I crossed the bridge I noticed the railroad bridge was going up. So I went that direction and when I got there it was all the way up. I took a couple of pics of it in that position. A UP intermodal train (with a UP engine and an NS engine) has just cleared the bridge. I actually took pics of that train while I was at Union Station (the old Missouri Pacific depot) where Amtrak stops. Another train, with a SP patch unit was leading another train and had to wait for the bridge to come down. While the bridge was up I noticed it had a device to block trains from falling into the river. I could not tell if the "door" was concrete or steel. Perhaps this is a weight that comes down when the bridge goes up, but I am not too sure about that. I think this is the first time I have ever noticed the bridge in the up position. I am not sure how the pics will turn out but I will post them and give a link when they are ready.

Things seem to be up and running again on CN -- was out at lineside this afternoon at Page and trains are running westbound again on CN -- In fact one of the first ones I noted was westbound # 353 with BCR dash9-44 # 4643 leading and trailing was CSX dash 8-40 # 7766 - another rarity for this part of the world. You never know with CN these days!

Motive power on the CN must be at a premium these days. 309 this afternoon had CN 6015 ( a rebuilt SD-40u, 35 yrs old) 6942, ( SD-40-3 , 33 yrs old) and 5078, an original SD-40,also 35 yrs old. You don't see many GE locos that old still hauling mainline freights at 60 per.

At Ravenna,Ky. yard(CSX) ,I saw the usual C44-9's or AC4400. Got lucky also,UP C40-8 and NS C40-9 leading KUCX (Kentucky Utilities) loaded coal train. At the east end of yard was a GP40-2 and slug ex GP30 and a big surprise, 3 SD40-2's. Haven't seen those around here for a long while.
