Rode up to Oxnard today (20th)...they're still there! On the next track over there is a UP caboose that is covered in graffiti

Did anyone get their numbers?

SP 8681 has been sitting in the local train yard for about a week. It appears that something was by the tracks. The left front handrails and the associated steps have been severly damaged.

Last night I recently saw. . . .. . . .two Amtrak Dash-944Cs at 30th Street Station #s 500, and 502. They were on the fuel track. Then about a week ago I saw a empty coal train w/ a BNSF AC44CW, and a NS dash 840C. These were the trailing engines. I couldn't see the lead engines. The train was on the NS mainline in Conheockein, PA.

One unit was SSW 7275, with Cotton Belt side lettering. The other was 7105 {found a better photo} with SP on the nose but no side lettering.

CSX local with usual GP38 on the point, assisted by the two SOO engines that probably brought the coal into town. Hoppers were all of western (to us) orgin - BN, SOO, CNW, et al.

Which ones?
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

Southbound CSX Q620-03 at Evans Mills, NY, with 5 engines on the point. I'm still working on the details, but as near as I can figure, the last 8-10 cars of the train derailed about 20 minutes later, just north of Watertown...

Yesterday, December 4 2004, I explored Hammond Indiana. Here is what I saw.

Homan Ave.
11:34 IHB #8834 Autos West
12:06 BNSF #796 Stacks Southeast
12:10 NS #4630 Boxcar Northwest
12:16 IHB #2925 Manifest East
12:21 IHB #4018 Autos West
CP State Line
13:09 NS#9705 BNSF#8042 Manifest South
CSX Tracks South of the South Shore Stop at Hammond
13:40 CSX #? UP#1948 Manifest West
14:39 CSX #? Leased#9079 Manifest West

These are trains that I took pictures of. At Homan Ave. Crossing there was a UP Auto rack train heading east around 12:01. At The CSX tracks there were three eastbound trains, Two CSX and one CP train, between the two westbounds. I shouldve left Hammond at 14:20 on the South Shore, but I see that the South Shore is a regional version of Amtrak. It came at 14:50. When I write down the information I usually do not include the lead units number, becuase It will usually show up in the photo. I must have been feeling weird. I wish someone wouldve told me that Stateline and Homan Ave. were very close to each other and the South Shore stop. The Chicago Rail Junction Site Editor did tell me, but I recieved the E-mail late. If anyone is looking for great railroading action, Hammond is the place to go. It is one of my favorite areas now.

When I went to Rochelle two weeks ago there was a NS engine on a BNSF transfer. I notice that even at LaGrange there is a lot of foreign power on any BNSF train that is not a Piggyback or Doublestack train.

I might also add that I have seen...
BNSF #6123 (SD9) at Joliet on a Doublestack train
Lots and lots of 400 series geeps on the Iowa Interstae

I drove pass the Wisc & Southern Roundhouse today (Janesville). SD40's everywhere. There is a small yard, which was filled with boxcars, tank cars and covered hoppers. I go back with the camera next time. I also need to check out the action around the GM plant.

...sitting in the CSX yard, in a string of assorted other cars (mostly boxcars): a Burlington Northern hopper, full of coal, carrying HLMX reporting marks. I don't know where ONE hopper of coal would be going; only time you see coal around here anymore it's in unit trains going to a power plant.

Former METRA bi-level cars #7807, 7809, and 7440, on ONTRAK (NYSW) at Carousel Mall in Syracuse, NY. They are apparently being stored there. I'm guessing that ONTRAK plans on using them together with their RDCs for the big events (SU dome games).

While I was there, one of the NYSW RDCs pulled in, too.

Spotted the Juice Train this afternoon on CSX west of Mobile, AL. It was running behind UP power that I didn't get a good look at, but the lead unit had the big U.S. flag on the side. The train was loaded and all the reefers were running! I haven't heard that in a very long time.

It's unusual to spot this guy down here, but I bet it's because the hurricanes did quite a job on the Florida Citrus crops this year. I suspect that Tropicana is bringing in citrus from Texas or California to make up for the shortages on the east coast.
