Good morning everbody.

We returned late last night from Cincinnati.  It was a beautiful service yesterday.at the church there.

I just checked our stocks, and railroad stocks are surging today.  Disclosure, I own some Burlington Northern Santa Fe stock.  It's up right now over $6.00 / share to about $89.00. I've held this for 5 years and I'm pleased with it. Big Smile [:D] ......  Disclosure, Shelley made a nice return a while back when she sold her Union Pacific stock. Now, I can give her a bad time.  She should have held it longer. It's up now over $7.00 / share so far today to about $110.00.  Grumpy [|(]

Happy Model Railraoding!

Good morning!

I'll have a hot tea and some OJ this morning, Chloe! Thanks!

Sore throat since Saturday night and I am trying to shake it off now.

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend!

I grilled some Rack of Lamb yesterday on my new charcoal grill. Also I made some Garlic and Herb Roasted New Potatoes, Creamed Spinach, and Sautéed Mushrooms. It was good eatin'!

Dick, how is the swing gate measurements? Hey, what's up with this cold weather in April? Been freezing three nights in a row, did you get snow up there too? Yea, I got a sore throat now, and this April cold is quite a thrill!   NOT! Fireplace was on just about all weekend.

Sue, thanks for letting me know about the stumps. Douglas Fir and Noble Fir are not found around these parts of the woods, so I might use some Eastern Hemlock that I have in the yard. Now how about some Engelmann Spruce, they have some of that your way too eh! I was Forestry major at LSU back in the early 80's and I took two dendrology classes, I used to be able to identify them all by bark, needles, and pine cones.

Garry, thoughts and prayers sent for you're out of state family member. Hope the heart condition improves for you, thoughts and prayers sent your way too! Looks like you are making a killing on those RR stocks!

James, congratulations on the move to your new house! Sorry the new train space is 1' shorter!

J.R., we too have had three nights in a row of sub-freezing temps.  Froze some of our newly planted flowers too, dag nabbit!

Luc, thoughts and prayers for Gloria, hope she is better now!

Colby, thanks for the video of your passenger trains. You might want to put that layout up on a table soon.

Paul, our thoughts and prayers go out to your daughter in law and for a quick recovery from the hospital.

Inch, thanks for sharing the photos from the ethanol plant.

Kathy, thanks!

Cheers,

Ryan

Sue, love your backdrop (and the scenery in front of it, too! I like the looks of the MDC Shays (have a two-truck one myself, though I got the RTR version - don’t totally trust my skills on assembling the MDC kits). Your Shay looks great. Tell Larry I said so, too! Thumbs Up [tup]

Jim,

Larry says, "Thanks."

We have three MDC locos that were all RTR DCC ready.  Larry found that all three had 2 wires reversed on the circuit board that the decoder plugs into.  If you trace the wires with an OHM meter, they are easy to track down.  This does not affect any DC operation, but will fry decoders.  The NWSL kit was only to provide smoother quieter running.

Looks like my new Bachmann 3-truck Shay is slated for delivery today according to UPS tracking.

I am hoping that decoder installation will be a little less eventful.

Ahhhh lunchtime in the Diner......Jeff is over there help serve the Cajon pot pie, and I see Ryan behind the counter helping himself to French Meat Pie..mmmmmm that looks good.

The temp outside has struggled to 41.1F as of 1pm, so it might hit 45F by 3pm today...ohhhh joy !!!

I was reading some articles over the weekend in the local newspaper where some people feel that what we are experiencing in Global Warming is quite normal, that we as humans have very little to do with it, and it is all a big scare tactic by scientist to get more funding for their projects.  Soooooo, the Cleveland Indians have cancelled all their games this past weekend, and todays game with the Mariners, due to  SNOW!!!  So I ask all you people in the Diner.....when is the last time that ANY Major League Baseball team has had to cancel an entire weekend of games due to snow ???  Global Warming? Naaaaah, it's just our imagination.

January 1-7 here in MA, the temps were 17.3F ABOVE normal, April 1-7, 7.6F BELOW normal including 17" of snow!

RYAN: No, sadly I haven't got back to the Train room yet, too many interruptions with other work, but it remains at the top of the list for sure. We have a big storm duw here on Thursday, so that will give me the day to get that measurement and maybe even done. I am glad that we brought in plenty of wood this past Fall, we still are burning the woodstove at night.

SUE: What are the types of Evergreen trees that you guys have growing in the NW?

Dick, guess I should have said, he was hoping to sell them at that price, but he was sure it would be under $4 a bag. These pellets are made in Gamaliel, KY, others round here can come from AR. or WI.

I don't know if it's man made global warming or what, but I'm ready for some warming of some kind. I've been seeing and reading on how much the sun spot activaty has increased the last few years, also the weaking of earths magnetic field.

Jerry, if you hear any thing from the guy in Flat Rock let me know. I'm sure we'll be going down past there before long, Deb's been wanting to go down to her cousins, just N of Birds.

Ryan, those pics were of the Marathon oil refinery in Robinson. I didn't get any of the ethanol plant, side of the road was to soft and was going to have to walk a piece for them and my legs just weren't up to it.

Best gets going, havn't made it to the rom yet, still trying to finish chores.

Afternoon gang: I just came up from the basement for a break. I got the braces in on the legs of the mine head frame. I also made the concrete retaining wall that supports the back of the head frame. I used 3mm PVC sheet for that. I scribed lines in it for the form boards marking. I also got the hoppers installed in the base. I guess now I have to do something for the ground. I can't assemble the thing without having a base so I may make a diarama type set up. Maybe 1x2 foot. I also have to figure out where on the layout it's going.

It's still cold and wet here. I really don't want to get out in the weather to do anything. I'd hate to get sick again. The DIL is doing great. Shes at home and that always helps.

I'm going to head back to the basement and see what else I can accomplish. I gotta make headway while the weather is losey.

Down to 39F already with a Dew Point of 19F, so the temp could drop that low tonight......maybe a one dog night, but in anycase, the Pellet stove will be cranking.

It warmed up enough this afternoon to get outside and do some maintenance. The yard tractor was cleaned up, the mower bed was taken off, cleaned, spray painted underneith, blades sharpened, so that tractor is ready for action......I figure it should be warm by June. LOL The chainsaw is all cleaned, and chain sharpened, so tomorrow that gets a workout on the things that the lopping shears could not handle.

COLBY: Falmouth??? Is it on route 1, a small ranch style house on the left side of the road as you drive South? If so, I was there two years ago, and the place was then called Maine Trains. We usually head up to LL Beans in June, so Falmouth is right along the route.

JEFF: Sometimes we get our best ideas while dreaming in sleep, so you really have to get up and at least right bthem down. In your case, you acted upon the idea.....good man!!!

Good evening, all,  I'll have a Mountain Dew and Chilli please.

My belated birthday present came today.  The next step will be getting a decoder.

Dick & Ryan,  We have Noble Fir, Doug Fir, Hemlock, Spruce, Cedar, Pine, etc.  To make the stumps, you should be able to use anything that has the contour or shape that you want. The Dougs have great shape & grooves in the bark.

I cut them long; dry them; and then make the saw cut.  Larry puts the logs in the microwave if he wants them dry sooner.  Put something down to catch the sap.

I was goofing around with Pearl again. What a ham.Laugh [(-D]

Howdy...  well it's in the lower 50's and it looked like the following pix I took about 60 minutes ago from our lower level patio.

That's not my scenery on the layout.  The Creator's talents exceed mine.

sue...... I like the Shay better than the dog (no offense to black lab), the mountain dew, or the chili.  That's some locomotive!

Ryan....  thanks much for the kind thoughts.  Prayer and faith can overcome stuff as needed.  Yes, railroad stocks have been performing well in recent years.  ..... As for our railroad stock.... The Dow Jones railroad stock index increased 50% in 2005. Today's jump occured after Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway announced it has been buying railroad stock.  Berkshire Hathaway reportedly now is the largest shareholder of Burlington Northern Santa Fe (11% of shares).  My holdings have fewer shares of the company than that. Oh well.

I did outside work this morning and worked on the layout this afternoon (wiring and mintenance)

Happy Model  Railroading.

Garry,  It is still daylight here and sunny between rain showers.

Thanks.  It's pretty exciting, I can hardly wait for the decoder.  It is a lot bigger that the 2-truck Shay.  Bachmann sure has finer detail as well.

Glad you got some time on the layout today.  I've been doing little projects here and there on the layout.

Later, Sue

Good evening people: Been away all day, Kris to work on the new book with her co-writer, and me from dropping her off for that, on to our daughter’s in Truro to deliver the Easter stuff we couldn’t yesterday, take the gang to lunch for their mother’s birthday (last Friday), some shopping (no LHS in Truro for some years now Thumbs Down [tdn]) and back along the highway to pick up K and go for Chinese, which was very good,Dinner [dinner] and so back home. Took notice of factory building types on the trip,( no camera of course, that would have been too easy!Banged Head [banghead]) some of which will be on the next mock-up factory.

CapeJim:
Was the recessed loading dock very hard to make on that one building?
…Not at all. Once you figure out that the base of the box has to be cut away to allow the part of the side that’s got the loading door on it to swing in, all you do is cut straight up the wall to a point conveniently above the top of the loading door, and then horizontally across to a point conveniently beyond the far edge of the loading door. “Convenient” in both cases being a matter of your personal taste in judging distances by “look”. Then you swing the loading bay in as far as you need it to be recessed. There is, doubtless, a limit to just how far you can take that, and since my bay was quite close to the corner of the building, that wasn’t very far. As you can see from the photo, I had to cut the corner “pillar” a bit to get enough room. On the styrene model I shall put the bay sufficiently far from the corner to eliminate that error. (One advantage of this mock-up process, I guess, working in cardboard, designing on the fly; and finding out these wrinkles.) Final bit of construction is to put in a piece of wall to fill in the gap at the "raw" edge of the swung in bay. I made my piece to go to the top of the box,(inside) so as to have another surface for gluing in addition to the inside edge of the corner and the edge of the bay.
One thing I’ve discovered about these boxes is that once the factory (or whatever) building is complete, the bottom needs to be cut corner to corner, and the triangular flaps that result pushed up into the box. This gives a flatter base for the building to sit on, as the bottom of the box is usually a bit bowed in the middle. I haven’t tried this before completing the model, but imagine that it would be a disaster , destroying the rigidity of the box.
JR:
three pennisnulas' (penninsuli ?)
…peninsulae?
Great to know he’s in Normal Scale in a big way! I’d sure like to visit that one! ]

That’s about it for today, so I’ll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayer for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening gang: I went back to the basement and put the roof sheeting on the mine head. Now all the sheeting is on it and it's ready for paint. I'm having a problem finding a place to put the mine. It needs room for the tracks coming out of the head frame for the spoils dump and the ore stock pile. Because the prototype is built on a rise with the tracks on a lower level I also have to build the rise. A 2" piece of foam is just the right height for the rise. I think that I'll have to put the mine on one of the corner moduals or make one of the straight sections wider. I guess it would help if I got the clutter cleaned up.

Mary Ann and I went in to Weatherford to see John and his wife. She is feeling good and eating. She has some swelling in her left arm from the IV so she is taking an aspren a day and resting. She goes back to the doctor Thursday.

I-20 west bound was shut down. I could see a bunch of flashing lights about a mile west of where we crossed. I don't know what was the problem but it must be bad because it was still shut down 45 min later.

Sue what is the 2 truck Shay? I've got an old 2 truck by PFM and a 3 truck buy PFM. The 2 truck is standard gauge and the 3 truck I converted to narrow gauge. Neather one has been run ia a long time.

It's time for Letterman so I'll say good night.

Good Morning All,

Just another run by this morning. Coffee to go and it's 25F outside. Rain is predicted for Pocono this weekend,  but hopefully only showers.

Sue - the new loco looks great - can't wait til it's broken in and weathered a bit.

Der - glad you weathered the storm ok. The slanted loading dock is a novel idea. Could be a help in my urban area should I ever get that far.

Paul - corners are great locations for mini scenes. I put my Martinsburg Mine in one and had room for the siding and some outbuildings plus the spoils. My "ore" goes directly into hoppers and the mine head is raised on foam behind the tracks.

Did some wiring for the lower level tracks last night running the buss and hooking it to the drops. The "suitcase" connectors work well and where they are clustered I can hook two drops and the feed buss with one insulation displacement connector. All you need is a pliers and the connector - no solder or clamps. I staple the wire to the bottom of the benchwork with a staple gun fitted with a wire stapler attachment (Arrow t-50 an antique I got from my father).

All for now w..k beckons.            CUL,J.R.

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have scrambled eggs and bacon,

coffee and a glass of Ed's OJ, please. Thanks, Jeff!

RT, hope you have a good report to bring back later today. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Not a lot of progress since I posted last (on Sat.?). I got the wire out and measured length for my power bus, but have had a snag in getting the 'crimp' connectors on the spade lugs to grab onto the wire (so far - going to get out the needle nose pliers and work on that tonight).

Sue, that 3-truck Shay looks really nice - the white striping along the edge looks sharp on it.
Better watch out with your Lab - now that she can see the screen, she may start posting for herself. I can see the new topics in the forum now "Survey - Do you prefer wood or coal?" Wink [;)] (dog joke there...)

JR, like what you've done with that Martinsburg mine - and is that the JL Innov. milk station on the right side there? (Put to a new use, of course) Of course, I'd love to see pics of Paul's mine progress, too. You have me curious, Paul! Especially since I'll need some kind of mine when I get to enlarging my layout (have to have somewhere for my small string of ore cars to go).

Jeff, should be good to see the pics when you get to scenery - you've got the layout looking pretty good already (I hadn't noticed that there wasn't much scenery until you reminded me, 'cause of all the neat buildings).

At MRR club last night, we had a short meeting - I helped one member who was doing some finishing touches on the 'bed' scenery for where the diner I assembled will be going, and another member was putting down WS plaster strips for scenery adjacent to the swing bridge by the entrance. The swing bridge has a bank and abutments leading to the Walthers rotating bridge in the middle of the gate (but the rotating bridge won't...). Third member (besides me) was working on gravel around an extension to the auto plant along the backdrop. I'll try to get pics and post later.

A bit warmer this morning here - 41 now, and suppsed to have some rain and get to 57 this afternoon, plus some more rain tomorrow.

'Bout time for me to get ready for w**k, so I'll get going. Prayers for those in need of healing and comfort. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Well, it's warming up a bit around here.  Instead of snow this morning it was frost.  It's a step in the right direction (baby steps, baby steps).  Doesn't look like it's going to hold out though.  I woke up to 30 degrees today, later in the week it'll be 60, but the day after that, flurries?  Thats not cool!

Man, you folks have really been showing off some great stuff lately!

Sue, you and Larry have really been going at it!  The log bridge, the loco's (conrat's on the new one BTW), and everything.....just awesome!  I've been getting bogged down in soldering jumpers on my turnouts.  I think my eyes are crossing!

And der has really been going at it too!  Hills, rocks, buildings......it all looks great!  (Better then my rendition of the Bluefoam Desert!)

inch has been out showing off great prototype stuff too!

Man!  I best get in the swing of things!  I've got to finish up this soldering so I can show some real progress!

Well, for now I'd best make like I'm getting ready to do some work around here.

OH, RT, prayers go with you today buddy!

Later!

Howdy......  again, it's wheat bran flakes with strawberries.  OJ on the side.  Actually, I rarely have any desire for bacon and eggs anymore.

Thinking about RT today.  Faith and prayer is always the answer.  Modern medical procedures to treat heart conditions allow folks to lead normal lives instead of suffering.

I'm liking all the photos; keep it up everybody. Sounds like a lot of progress, Jeff.   ...and Der, you're doing some great stuff.......

Philip.......  watch out for the weekend weather.

JR  I like the scene you showed us.  Watch out for the stapler!

Happy Model Railroading.

JR,  Great scene.  Are those all race cars on the bottom?  On the Shay, running is the first endeavor, then we will work on the weathering.  It may be my first at loco weathering.

Paul,  The 2-truck is MDC.  The regearing quieted it down some, but not as nice as the Bachmann.  The MDC runs slower than any of our other locos.

Jim,  The dog jokes are fitting.  She throws the ball to us.  So far, she has not thrown it on the layout.  We actually keep the ball on the layout and I think that she knows it.

Philip, Wiring jumpers would be hard enough in HO, but I can not imagine N scale.Banged Head [banghead]

Larry installed another short section of track yesterday.  As soon as I get that landscaped, we can start on the next bridge.

Well, I should go to work.

Sue

Good morning all;  It’s getting on to an early lunch, I’ll have one of those hot dogs please Janie.

Garry:

That's not my scenery on the layout.  The Creator's talents exceed mine.
…that’s mainly my approach to trees, use what’s provided each year by the side of the road! These have to be coloured yet.

JR:

The slanted loading dock is a novel idea. Could be a help in my urban area should I ever get that far.
…here’s why I had to do it.    That’s not even a trailer, but a 40’ container parked with the loading bay  flat to the wall!  Putting the bay on the road side wall shoves the trailers out into the traffic!

PC:

Better then my rendition of the Bluefoam Desert!
…that was, and still in April is, my New Year’s Resolution…cover up the Blue Foam Desert!

Sue

The MDC runs slower than any of our other locos.
…but then it is a Shay!
JR,  Great scene.
…[ditto]

Good afternoon!

What's for the lunch special today Chloe? I see Jim had the scrambled egg and bacon breakfast, and I'll skip the "Hot Dog" that Der John has, so I think I'll have the creamed chipped beef on toast please!!!! Dinner [dinner] Big Smile [:D]

Dick, glad you stocked up on wood in the fall eh! Got any trees left for next winter? We almost broke a record for consecutive days in a row of below freezing temps for the month of April. I just hope we don't start breaking temp records for consecutive hot days this summer....

I know what you mean about getting some "train time" in! Last time I spent any amount of time on my layout was Friday, March 23.

I have mowed the yard three times already....what are you waiting for? Whistling [:-^]

Inch, Oh okay! Marathon Oil refinery, great pics anyway! I agree on the warming trend request, this cold snap of Artic air needs to go back north.

Okay Paul, remember, any layout update reports need to be accompanied with photos and a PowerPoint presentation. We expect a completed report by COB on Friday.  Cool [8D]

BTW, glad to hear the DIL is doing better!  Yeah!! [yeah]

One more thing before I leave for the night... ANy one know of any good LHS' in New Orleans? I'm going there on the 23rd for a 2 week exercise the unit is going on and returing on the 4th of May.

Night all!

New Orleans, never heard of the place! LOL Smile [:)]

John, Hub Hobby was flooded by Katrina and has now moved from their old Broad Street New Orleans location to Metairie, which is just about a 20 minute drive from downtown New Orleans. Also, in Kenner there are two train shops just about across the street from each other. One is on Williams Blvd, and the other is just off of that street. Here are the listings for shops that I have been to over the years:

Hub Hobby Shop - http://www.hubhobbyshop.com/ , 3829 Airline Dr Metairie LA 70001, Between N. Turnbull and Cleary - - one block East of Sam's Club, 9:30 am to 5:15 pm, Open Daily: Closed Wednesdays and Sundays, 504 828-6868

Kenner Train Shop - Owned by Claude Brown, open Fri. & Sat. 10-6 2000 20th Street, Kenner, LA 70062, (504) 466-5878

Mike's Train Shop -Owned by Michael Sciavicco, 2000 Williams Blvd,  Kenner, LA 70062-5804 (504) 466-8531

Sue, Pearl's vision looks good! Cool [8D]

Garry, great picture from the lower patio! What body of water is that and when can we all go swimming?  Here is a link to the Wall Street Journal article on Buffet's stock announcement.

Der John, you need to take a break and let us all catch up with your model railroading activities. LOL Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Philip, looks like similar roller coaster weather we are having here, with the exception that we are not getting any snow. You off work this week too? Confused [%-)]

RT, good luck at the Doc's visit! Prayers and well wishes! Angel [angel]

J.R., those suitcase connectors are great huh! And they really make for quick work in wiring too!
