Zzz [zzz][Yawwwnnnnnn!]Good Morning, Zoe - I can use some of that coffee this morning, please! Thank you. Thanks, RT.

Luc, sorry to hear Glo's back in the hospital. I'll be praying for her (and for the doctors to find and fix whatever's going on, ASAP), and for you also. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Garry (and Gazoo) - I do recall some additional servers who have helped out from time to time. I think there's been Flo, and... another whose name I can't recall just yet. Maybe after I get another coffee and some breakfast in me... Zzz [zzz]

I'll be in the corner booth napping watching the morning trains...Zzz [zzz]

Blessings on your day(s),

Jim (cape)... thanks for the info about servers. Now, I'll enjoy a cup of Luc's coffee from Tim Hortons. ...Hope you didn't sleep through that big freight passing through town with the very loud locomotive.  Wink [;)]

We'll be thinking of you luc.

Jeff....  nice house. Computer image is just fuzzy enough so I'm not sure what I'm seein with the windows. Looks like double hung windows that may be open part way and/or may have shades.  Keep up the good work and the pix.

Colby ......... don't pay attention to those who tease about your liking trains.  Did you know freight trains consume 1/3 the fuel and do 1/3 the polluting than is the case with trucks hauling equivalent amounts of cargo over equivalent distances?  Tell them that. Trains are good for America's energy and environmental issues.  Also, it's good to read your stuff. Sounds like you have learned to use your time wisely.  You will be amazed sometime 25 to 50 years from now just how fast the time went by.  You will be gad you wasted little of your time as others (teasers included) may have done. Best wishes.

Neither of you noticed that the windows have mirrors in them. Look closely and you'll see the reflection of part of the layout in them.

I don't know if they are or not. Have to check into that. Right now I'm too busy with getting ready to start on scenery.

Good morning to everyone . It is sleeting and raining here with a temp of 34.4F, no snow, so we dodged another bullet here in central MA, but areas just north of us are getting heavy wet snow.

COLBY: As you get older, you will find that at "every" age of your life, you will be kidded about something. As for us old/older/oldest guys..............where're not OLD Colby, we have just lived a LONG TIME!!!

JEFF: That is really neat with mirrors in the windows!!! How did you come up with that idea?

PC: Ok, are you alive??? What is your BP, PSA, CH, C-RP, Gl, Tri, LDL, HDL ? Are you going to make it to age 50? Or, do you have stop eating all those greasy burgers, onion rings soaked in bacon fat, mashed potatoes made with whole milk and real butter, and fried foods that we serve in the Diner???

LUC: That is disheartening news regarding Glo, please tell her that we are praying for her recovery.

Time for lunch, see you guys later...blueberry low fat yogurt, skim milk, tuna sandwich for me.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Diners: Rain or snow on the way for tomorrow, so we’ll enjoy the sunshine today! Didn’t let the museum interfere with the mrr yesterday, so was able to get most of the work done on converting the cookie box to a factory. Detail stuff this morning, and here we are…The Vector Building. There are three architectural elements in this that I saw on Monday on my trip to Truro. The “bump out” office windows are on a truck dealership, and I thought they were worth a try. The concrete slab side walls, and the weather shields and drop plate ramps on the loading bays give me some variety. Modeling the modern era makes scratching box shaped buildings a breeze! I also saw a bunch of different types of roof details, A/C units, vents and such. Must take some time to do some of those.

Gazoo You’ll soon get used to the “any topic” atmosphere around the Diner. Mind you, we keep it G rated, even without the help of the Forum Police, as that’s how most of us like it.

Sue:

What is the bush that you are using for trees?
…that particular one is a variety of wild Spirea that I found late last summer. I only know of 3 plants on the island, and I haven’t seen it anywhere else. The more common wild Spirea is everywhere around here (Mostly white flowers, the one in the photo has pink). I prefer to harvest the flower heads around this time of year as the junk gets blown out in the winter! I also use Cedum, and cultivated proper pink Spirea, as well as a weed that isn’t Tansy, but neither Kris nor I can think of its name!

Colby: Congratulations on that Nomination. You must feel on top of the world! Bow [bow] Hope it all goes forward for you. BTW, where exactly is your Lewiston? I think there is a possibility that there is a historical connection between our town of Truro in Nova Scotia, and your Lewiston.

I don't know about you guys but I think that older railfans (not that any of you are realy old but are getting one in years) are more likly to get sick as younger railfans like me get teased about liking trains at school.
…the teasing doesn’t let up after you leave school, just changes to a mused tolerance look!...and then you get the health issues too, isn’t life grand?

Garry:

I recall the granite rocks but not the blue flat stuff.
…We’ve granite for sure, an d basalt in rounded outcroppings scraped clean by the ice age and not re-vegetated. The blue rock is real, but the formation I’ve modeled it in is purely a consequence of my building in 1 inch foam and not wanting to sand the stuff. So I elected for a step-like rock effect. At some point I want to try to get the effect of tilted rock strata. That may be fun, or a pain. We shall see.

CapeJim:

Is Kris off on a book marketing junket, or pleasure?
…pleasure, shopping, and she did really well too. The marketing thing will come later in the year, hopefully!

Mike: Thanks for the info on the ultrasonic cleaner. I’ll have to Google and see what’s available in Canada. The remark about it getting the last bits of paint from a loco shell prior to painting caught my eye.

Dick:

we have TWO Nro'easters coming our way, for you, it will be Friday and Monday,
…that’s good, as we only really need good driving for Sunday! Luc: Sorry to hear about Gloria. I’ll email you.Angel [angel]

PC: Hope all goes well at the doctor’s. Angel [angel]

Kris has just made lunchtime noises, so I’ll say TTFN.

The idea hit me at the same instant that I saw a package of small mirrors in the crafts section at Wal-Mart. This particular structure covers one of the speakers for the 5.1 surround sound system on the layout so it's impossible to install lighting or an interior as the speaker takes up all the space. The mirrors show the reflection of whatever is in front of the structure giving the viewer the initial impression that it's something behind it, showing through the back windows. It looks a lot better than the ugly black mass of the speaker.

Hi.

Gloria is being booked for an emergency dye test to try to determine the
trigger for these attacks, then they will fix it and she'll be coming home.
It may take a while though.

I'm sorry I seem to come here only when I have bad news.

Good morning, All.  I will just have coffee.. It is only late morning, and too soon for lunch.  I have to go into the office for a lunch staff meeting.  A sales rep will be showing us a new scope that will scan the tissues in the mouth to diagnose cancerous tissue in early stages.  It will be definately worth a trip to town.

Jim,  Which trees were wanting pictures of?  The butterfly bushes are done similar to Aggro Trees. Hairspray, dark ground foam, hairspray, until you get the texture that you want, then put a dusting of a lighter coat on the top.

Inch, What a score on the ultrasonic.  I am still chuckling because it looks somewhat like a smiley face.

Garry,  No, Pearl has not signed up for the Mariners.  She does not have much of a pitch, but boy, she likes the outfield.

Dick,  We do have a few Colorado Blue Spruce ( stickery ).  They are only a couple feet high. I will check out the branches.  I have not been near a bookstore to check on the book yet.

luct, By now I am hoping that they have found the reason for Gloria's attacks.  Prayers for her.Angel [angel]

der,  We have used Sedum for Maple trees.  I think that Spirea might be a shrub here, and I think that I have a friend who might have a bush.

Jeff, Clever idea with the mirrors.  Keep the pictures coming.

Well, I probably should get ready to head to town.

It is raining cats and dogs here and winds are howling from the Northeast at 30mph, over an inch of rain so far and more to come.

SUE: Is that scanner for dentist to use? What is the name of the scanner/Mfg?  As for Colorado Blue Spruce, they get to over 75 feet in height here in New England, I am puzzled why they are smaller like scrub pine in the Northwest where you guys have a rainforest climate. I could see them as scrub in the Tundra, but not the Northwest....is it a soil condition thing possibly?

JEFF: That was a real clever idea......I'll have to save that idea for sure.

DER JOHN: Rain and lots of it headed your way, although the western part of NS and certainly NB will get hit with the heaviest.

LUC: Hopefully the dye test will show where the blockages are in the arteries, Glo has certainly been through a lot this past year.

Down to the train room,

Good Afternoon, Zoe - a root beer float, please! Oh, what the heck, add some cheese fries to that, too. Smile [:)]

Inch, I may have to look for one of those ultrasonic cleaners, but I want one big enough to hold a GP7 shell (or at least a 50' boxcar). Of course, I'll have to save up my nickels and dimes for that...

Jerry, did you see the article earlier this year in MR on lighting structures? I'll look it up in mine and post it here for you. I didn't find it in the online indexes (indices?) for this year's issues, so time for the five finger search engine...

Hey, Chuck, isn't it a little early for worms and fishing season? Evil [}:)]Wink [;)]

Jeff, nice idea there on the mirrors - especially when you need to hide something like a speaker. I was thinking you meant like having some windows 'open' or such. D'uh! Sorry 'bout missing that the first time I looked.

If I'm tired, Duke, I can sleep through even a Challenger or a Big Boy going by! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Never let a little noise interfere with my sleep, by golly.

Luc, hope they get everything lined out and fixed in good order. Leaving it in the Great Physician's (quite capable) hands for you. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Wonder how many projects Fergie has finished out on the icebreaker? For those of you unfamiliar with Fergie's seagoing trips, one of the last times he was out, he got either most of, or the sections for a whole wooden trestle done. Shock [:O] Guy can do all right, even out at sea!

Well, about quitting time here at work for me.Oops [oops] - sorry there, Paul. It just slipped out of my mouth there. Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^] Everyone have a good evening, and Luc, don't worry about checking in - keep us filled in on Gloria's progress.

...and it looks like I'm covering the dinner and desert shift, folks! Zoe, have Chloe keep a running tab for me when she comes in, and let me know the damages in the morning! Oops [oops]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

PC......... alive, eh.......... get back to work on that layout!

Der....... thanks for update on Nova Scotia rocks.  If you're interested, I could explain how I make my strata.  Shelley & I are contemplating possible vacations and considering another trip to NS. We like what we saw last time, but as I said before, trip was disrupted on 9/11/01. Any suggestions on what we have to see?

Looks like everbody is reflecting upon Jeff's creativity today.  neat idea, Jeff.

So fergie's on an icebreaker.......... cool!

....and Jim (cape) is sleeping through big steam sounds........ what's louder?  a Big Boy roaring by with a hotshot of PFE reefers?  ...or Jim's snoring???

Hey Colby!  nobody teases here I hope!

Still thinking of Trent.  You okay, trent? ............and RT's stress test, how's it go, RT?

Luct... keep the faith and thanks for keeping us informed.

Any fresh rubbarb pies on teh way again, Dick?  .............if so, keep it away from Ryan!

...and Sue, Pearl really ought to try out for the Mariners, reconsider!

..watch out, Duke, in case it's a real can of worms!

have I bothered enough people yet????

Cheers

Dick,

The machine is a Velscope.  It uses a light that will show lesions in the mucosa of the mouth.  It will soon become standard of practice as part of the intraoral exam.  It is marketed as a tool used by the dental hygienist and/or the dentist for screening.  It shows more depth of a lesion and helps to determine which abnormalities need to be referred for biopsey.  Another important use is to help the surgeon identify the margin so that all of the tumor is removed.

The Colorado Blue Spruce that I have are competing with weeds, and I assume that has something to do with size.  It takes 10 years for a Noble Fir to mature to Christmas tree size so, the Spruce should be similar.  Once I realized how stickery they were I have not been anxious to do much with them.  They are not native here.

Having trouble finding one DPM kit I had at one time (when I inventoried my structures a while back). Went through all the probable boxes I thought it could be in - no luck. I'm sure it will show up as soon as I order another kit like it, right?

And speaking of structures - Jerry, that article on lighting for structures turned out was in the November 2006 issue of MR (pages 76-78).

Good evening everyone. Just done some measuring from that excellent photo of an interlock tower posted some time ago by ???? It’s just what I need to replace the two insulin phial boxes that are standing in for the “real thing” on the layout. The boxes are just a bit too large to match the size of that tower in N, so I’ll start from scratch, so to speak!

Jeff: I couldn’t see those mirrors, but now I look at the pic, I see nothing else! Great idea, thanks for sharing it.Thumbs Up [tup]

Mike: Thanks for the url of the ultrasonic cleaners. I’ve bookmarked it, and will have a look later. Even the small one to do wheels sounds like a great idea. I hate that chore!

Sue:

We have used Sedum for Maple trees
…I remembered the name of the weed Icouldn’t this morning, it’s Yarrow. (Kris says she knew that, but because I was asking about yellow flowered weeds, she didn’t mention it. Turns out the flowers are white!Whistling [:-^]) Anyway, it’s this stuff. The wild Spirea that I have used in Alberta, and will used extensively here breaks down into individual “trees” from each branch, especially in N Scale. It is a great stand-in for spruce and balsam type trees, especially if the right ground foams are used. I’ve even used it for stands of black spruce. This example (from my walk this evening) is not as tightly packed as most, and would do for any general tree. Here’s our Sedum, much the same as yours I think. And here is the cultivated Pink Spirea. The flower heads are smaller, and they make great bushes in HO and small trees in N. I think my orchard may use these. Finally, here’s another type of Spirea, but I can’t remember where I harvested it. I’ll have to keep a look out this summer for more!

Chuck: Thanks for the warning! Maybe you should have one of these.

Colby: Thanks for the map.. Ask around town about how it was founded. If it was by a John Lewis (either Senior or Junior ) who made shoe making equipment, and components for shoes, then I think we have a connection.

Garry:

Any suggestions on what we have to see?
…besides Luc and Fergie’s layouts, and a great trip up the Eastern Shore to see the Maritime Trunk?...e mail me with your interests and time available, and a reminder of what you saw after 9/11. I’ll take it from there.

Round one is over of the Nor'easters, just a lot of rain here, a foot up north. But Sunday/Monday's storm is going to be a big one....3-5" of rain here, 60 Mph winds. My neighbor just had her roof shingled, I sure hope they have enough time to seal in the sun tomorrow before the high winds hit.

RYAN: I measured the swing for the gate...no go. The bridge measures 18"depth by 30" wide. The problem lies in the fact that I cannot open the gate bridge any more than 110 degrees because of a cabinet that I cannot move. The other direction has my work table which I cannot relocate either. So, I have decided to go with a lift-out. I will removed the present design which is a hinge-up, and at the same time back a slight alteration in the design shape to better accomodate the curve radius over the lift-out. Now I need to use magnetic contacts for track power...no big deal. I could also use push-button contact switches.

DUKE: Pie season is just around the corner....I hear that there is a big run on Strawberry-Rhubarb pie this year...it seems that someone un-named in the Midwest is trying to "corner the market". Have any ideas who this might be????

SUE: Thanks for the info...I go to the dentist on Wednesday, he is very progressive and has all the latest equipment, so I will ask about this scanner.

Yes, Colorados have very stiff prickly needles, so they are hard to work with, but do have a great shape. Firs are so whispy that they take some real work to make them look right. I have Douglas fir, Balsam, and Frasier Fir to use also, so I am going to experiment with those also. White Birch makes another interesting possibility.

See you guys for breakfast,

Good evening, I will have some of Ryan's pie.

der, We have Yarrow that I have tried to kill unsuccessfully.  It is somewhat invasive. My friend Donna says that she has some spirea so I will check that out, too.  It is fun trying different things.  Thanks for the photos.

Well, I should head for bed since I am working tomorrow.  It is a short day so I might get some layout time in the afternoon. Good night all.

Sue
