Garry,

They have since installed gates at Pines road and closed 34th street as it no longer connects with Pines. That keeps most of the people from running the crossing.

Good evening follks.  Spent some time under the layout wiring things.  I bought a CMR turntable off ebay some time ago and I have been scenicking around it.  Today I did a test hook up.

The bogie wheels on each side supply power to separte bridge rails.  One bridge rail had no power.  On my model, the bogie wheels are ball bearings on brass hollow axles and a wire from the axle connect to the rail.

The PO might have glued the bearing to the axle, because there is no electrical continuity between the axle and the bearing.  The axle doesn't budge on the bearing.

Newer models have a brass wiper that contacts both wheels (bearings)

The PO also shimmed the wheels to raise the bridge.  That appears to have been neccesary for the rails to clear the edge of the pit, but I don't know why that was necessary.

I called CMR and the guy on duty wasn't familiar enough with the turntable to be of any help, but the boss was out of the office and would call me back next week.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, the gang and I will take a Crown Royal with a Beer chaser and give Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they want.

Wife is doing much better! If she gets any better I will have to kill her! Smile, Wink & Grin Now the good news she can get out of bed much better than yesterday, walking more normal and not using the walker as a crutch but to keep her stable.

Reason I will have to kill her? She likes being waited on and I won't do it! She was in the bathroom cleaning her faces and when she was done she wanted me to hang up the wash cloth. Told her, well turn around and do it. Said she could not turn around in the bathroom on her walker and started calling me names and hoped I get in her shape! I just looked at her. Then she turned around and hung up the wash cloth! Laugh Man I am a jerk, making the poor woman do things she can do! Whistling

Steven I am confused.Confused Why do you want to spend $40.00 on oil for a engine you want to replaces? Does the 302 have a speical need besides being a Ford? Laugh What do you hope to gain if anything?

When I bought my 69 Charger R/T the BB had 125,000 miles on it and had the death rattles. Nothing broken but close to worn out. I replaced the heads and timing chain, added slick 50 and started running Mobile 1. Stopped by at the time my engine bulider and he heard the 69 Charger before and after. He asked me "did you go a head and replaced the engine?" Told him no and told him what I did. He just shook his head!

Till I know what you are looking to gain I am a little at a lost. I swear by slick 50 and well worth it cost! If you want to know why I swear by slick 50 let me know and I will post about it.

 Later Ken

Night Diners

I've been doing more modeling and less reading the last few days but I took a quick skim through before I hit the rack.

Thanks Brent I should have got that shot. At least I didn't get the Superbad flu though.

Thanks JaBear I'm glad you shook It off. Being sick ain't no fun. I'm on my way out of the woods here.

Thanks Garry, a compliment is always appreciated.

The 302 is fine, I ended up getting Pennzoil 5w30 High Mileage, for 18 bucks for 5 quarts, the filter was 10 so I only spent 30 bucks on it.

I had the oil changed in under 15 minutes, it's running good no problems.

I'm planning to replace it but that will probably be in one or two years, I'm working on getting a 351w to work on and get hot rodded before swapping it in. Oil is expensive though! At oriellys it was 25 bucks for a 5q jug! And that was the cheapest!

I tailgated with my church at the local high school football game.

Talked to some people, saw most of the kids from my Sunday school class.

Well I'll be around, not much going on. Later!

How on earth can you make plans to change your engine in two years? If it ain´t broke, don´t fix it! How about a little less planning and more doing?

Come on Ulrich! Let the guy have a little fun!! Hopping up an engine is a very rewarding experience, especially if you are a gear head like Steven is. Would you rather he get fat playing video games? Of course not.

Steven:

I have to agree with Ulrich. Using 5W30 in a warm climate doesn't make a lot of sense to me, especially in an engine with some miles on it. I ran 5W20 in my MGB but only during the Canadian winter. The rest of the year I ran 20W50 (I'm not suggesting 20W50 for your truck). Use what Ford says to use in your climate.

Gidday Chloe, while this may well be a virtual Diner, I still think it would be best if I limited myself to a small slice of Garry’s Kentucky Derby Pie, please.Sigh

Yes, the Derby would be another thing that puts Kentucky on the international map.

I must admit that “Currywurst and Fries” didn’t sound much like a German traditional dish to me Ulrich, until I read up on it. I can see how the dish would have put a little zing into the life of a resident of an austere post war Berlin.

I’m not sure how far back goes the New Zealand version of Curried Sausages but the big difference is that the sausages were cooked in the simmering curry sauce and served on rice. With the more recent introduction of curry pastes from the Indian Subcontinent and Thailand, the recipe is rather mild but I still enjoy it from time to time.

I’m a follower of the Darwin Awards and often think those trying to outrun trains at level crossings would be doing the gene pool a favour if they failed. However, I know a couple of locomotive drivers who have been involved in fatal crossing accidents, and how it’s affected them, so really, I wish the idiots in motor vehicles would learn better!

Though looking at these two posters, the NZR one from 1927 (top), and guessing that the US one is from the same era, it shows that we can be very slow learners.

Morning folks,

Ford said 5w30 so that's what I used.

Far as the engine swap, I'm going to be getting a 351w to work on soom, hopefully before years end, then I'm going to tinker with it. As time money permits, then when it's done, I figure in a year and a half two years, I'll swap it in.

Mornin' folks!

Chloe, I could use another pot of dark roast, fair traded, organic Coffee please...  Thank you Ma'am!

No word yet on my sister the Rev.  The estimate I was given was that she would pass yesterday or the day before.  I am sad that it is drawing out for the family.....  I'm hoping to hear today so I can pass the information along to my church.

Some of you might do well to look up what Asberger's is.  I, during my 32 years as a teacher and now working with a handicapped Boy Scout Pack and Troop, have worked with many kids who have been diagnosed with it.  One place to find info is here: https://www.autismspeaks.org/what-asperger-syndrome  I have seen on here what comes close to bullying by folks who have no clue about the syndrome.  Today Asperger's is just placed in one umbrella diagnosis of “autism spectrum disorder".  Most people with Asperger's tend to be "high functioning", quite intellegent, and able to deal with the symptom's well as does our friend Steven.  I would suggest to all to be a bit more knowledgeable and kinder given his condition!  We had a young man in the troop (for handicapped Scouts) who not only had severe Asperger's but was also deaf.  The Scoutmaster didn't really understand his difficulties and just kept thinking he couldn't function well enough to learn some skills.  WRONG!  That kid is now getting better Scouting in a regular troop (also has cochlear implants in both ears and so can now hear what is going on better...).  'Nuff said!

Engine oil...  My car (2017 model) takes full synthetic 5W-30 life long oil that only needs to be changed when the car says so.....  I have 17,900 miles on her and just got the oil changed last month for the first time.  I could have put that off for another 3 or 4 thousand miles but since I was driving on the fosselized dinosaur crap to get to NJ, I figured it might be time to do it (not to mention this one was "free" so I didn't want to put it off until the coupon expired....).  There is no break-in time, BTW, as it is completely done at the factory and then new oil is put in before it is shipped.  It will probably be about 3 years ( 25,000 more miles or so) before it needs to have it done again.  Ah the pleasures of driving electric most of the time..... Wink

Good morning ...

Ray .... Continues prayers for you and your family regarding your sister.

Bear ... I like those old signs promoting crossing safety. ... I getting an idea of printing one for a billboard on the layout.

My friend, Gus, who is a retired locomotive engineer tells me about grade crossing accidents he was involved in. One time, he was in a locomotive that hit a loaded concrete truck. Five Geeps derailed along with a very long train. The lead unit was a high hood GP9 which he says protected the crew from having injures. A low hood unit would have another outcome.

It rained frogs last night.  These were in my basement window well.

Trying Randy's trick of soldering feeders to rail joiners.  Makes it awkward to slide them on the rails.

Good morning from a very wet West Coast. Suppose to clear up tomorrow though for a week of sunshine and temps in the low 20s.

My Daughter was traveling from Toronto to Ottawa on her Universities tour yesterday and was going right by where the tornado hit when it hit just outside Ottawa. I had both my son and daughter on FaceBook at the same time the storm was hitting and they were both sending live video. My Daughter from the car and my Son out his bedroom window. They both then went off the air almost at the same time as power and cell sites went down. Shortly after I got an automated message that they were both okay. Wonderful stuff, modern technology. Today they are both still without power and cell service is spotty. We reminded my daughter that her ticket home is on her phone and not to let it go dead. Needless to say, her plans for the day, including meeting up with my Son are up in the air.

Steven, I have a friend that even today as he approaches sixty years old loves to tinker with cars and more specifically engines. He has six Chevy Vegas he has turned into drag race cars that he has owned for about forty years.

When he was just out of High School he took a 350 out of a car and put it on an engine stand and proceeded to tear it down. Over the next three years, he rebuilt it into a very powerful drag race engine and sold it for $20,000.00 and this was in the 1980s. He only had High School auto shop as his education, however, he read and read and knew everything there was to know about what he was doing, his workbench was full of open manuals and textbooks. I say go ahead and work on your truck, over the years you will save yourself thousands of dollars if you can do your own repairs. But! Before you do anything, educate yourself by doing lots of reading and You-Tube videos are good to supplement what you learn reading.

Instead of saying I am going to do this and going to do that, read and figure out the cost vs benefit. Then proceed from a point of being educated about what you are doing. Rational thinking and accepting hard facts lead to success.

I think time in the train room is on today while the rains fall. Might go to the RV show later as the wife wants one of those class A motorhomes. I told her I am not getting one until she gets her airbrake endorsement and training on driving it. If I got sick or worse, I don't want her stranded somewhere just because she isn't licensed to drive it.

All the best to all.

In case you are interested, in my oppinion, the Newmar Essex or Tiffin Allegro Bus are two great choices. The Essex is just amazing from one end to the other. Tiffin has legendary customer service for their Class A customers.

.

Fleetwood's "American" series are also wonderful, but I think the Tiffin and Newmar drive better. Do the Fleetwoods go by a different name in Canada?

The LION is moving...

From room 111 on the first floor to room 205 on the sedond floor.

rooms are about the same size but now all of the rooms on the first floor will be guest rooms.

LION has been in that room for more than 30 years.

Now I have to herd all of my stuffed cats to the second floor.

Train room stays where it was on the third floor, two buildings over.

Steven a 302 is one of the most rock-solid engines Ford ever made. I kind of miss mine. A 351 Cleveland is way better than a 351 Windsor. I would know I have a 351 Windsor. I would rather have a Cleveland but I'd rather keep my car original. A windsor can have its problems more than a Cleveland. This is why my brother-in-law rebuilt mine. He sleeved it and bossed it but used top dollar high performance parts. The secret to a trouble-free engine, if there is such a thing.

A lot of motor heads don't realize by just changing gear ratio in the rear end does wonders. More bang for the buck. The Ford 9-inch rear end is the best rear end ever made. Why do you think racing teams take them and do conversions putting them into other makes of cars. More romp off the line but you'll run to the gas station more if you do a lot of highway driving.

I don't quite understand why you want to soup up a pickup truck anyway. Why don't you save your money up and buy a muscle machine. You'll look a lot cooler horsing around in thatCool.... no pun intendedWink

PS   I knew guys that souped-up pickup trucks. It's just a bad idea because there's no weight in the back end. You spend all that money on Power and all you do is bust your wheels free..... unless you put sandbags in the back end or put super stickie tires on. At that point you better have posi traction. If you do put sandbags in the back make sure you strap them down. There has been instances where someone gets in a bad accident and the sandbag flies through the back window and kills them....... careful careful with power.Wink

I have an album at Flickr of signs and posters. No where as many as Tomkat-13 but I do have several of the old crossing posters available for download.

I see some bickering and static around here and it's a bit saddening.

Ulrich the statement I just posted was intended out of respect for you..... You have been here a long time and are respected not only by me but a lot of other people on this Forum.

This jumping down one's throat lately isn't exactly my bag of tea. I don't really appreciate the lack of respect around here lately.

Maybe just give it a break as I think I could right now.  I know on top of everything you're having a hard time over there with the situation in Germany right now. Tensions are high.... things will get better, Take careWink

I see there is yet another dumpster fire here in the diner.

Ulrich, I do NOT appreciate your rudeness, I do as much as my finances allow, I've gotten some modeling projects done, and I fully intend on doing the rest when I get to them, I'm sorry my existence bothers you so. I was going to say something that was really rude but I don't think it's called for.

Track fiddler, are you implying that I'm a bad egg, I want to know where I stand. And Ulrich got fired up over something heaven knows what, people reacted and he left.

Ray, thank you for the support, one request though please do not refer to my condition as a "disorder" or "disability", it's a syndrome or condition, thank you.

Also when I was born I had this condition, and I always will, that's something I have to live with, I can't get mad and log off to get away from it, and there's no changing it, I have "evolved" and I'm better now than 2 or 4 years ago, but I'll always be "different" and I'm fine with that.
