Good afternoon folks: Just been trying to catch up a bit with the pages. Been re-thinking the layout and looking at the Timesaver switching tracks I saved. Not happy with that. I’ve eliminated them from the SCARM plan, and moved the Narrow gauge tourist line over to the near side of the layout. Much more simple and handy.  The other major simplification is to eliminate the interchange tracks at that same end of the layout and move the interchange to the left hand top end thusly:

Ulrich: This book   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shades_of_Grey_1:_The_Road_to_High_Saffron   is sort of sci-fi (very difficult to put it into any established genres actually) – but Fforde’s imagination has space for monorails. A fascinating read – or not, as people either “get it” or not. Kris and I did, and wish he’d write a sequel. His other stuff is terrific; but I digress….

One more item - although I am not a big fan of animated gimmicks on a layout, I´d integrate a Faller Car System on the road behind the chapel, with the yellow bus (and some cars) moving along, sounding that typical Swiss PTT bus horn.

But that´s about all I would do differently.

I am still happy with the layout as it is.

As indeed you should be! The Faller Car System looks very tempting – but cost precludes it for me – and right now I’ve absolutely no idea where my roads will be except that the stations ought to have roads to them! Clown

James Moon:
Enjoyed the final episode of Downton Abbey tonight.  Really got hooked on English history since first watching the first episode four years ago.  In fact, I have signed up for a course on early British history through the local Institute for Learning in Retirement which starts two Friday's from now.
Since the song line “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down” ( Mary Poppins, but I won’t inflict you with a link) is probably not far from the truth, have a look for the book “1066 and All That” by W.C.Sellar and R.C.Yeatman for which here is a link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1066_and_All_That  It’s a spoof of the teaching style in English schools in the 1930s, but which was pretty close to that through which I suffered as a child. However, it’s fair to say that my interest in / love of history goes back to a memorable (a least for me) afternoon when our history teacher took the class outside to a pile of builder’s sand and had us construct a model of a Motte and bailey castle of about the 11th Century era. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motte-and-bailey_castle should anyone care…) Enjoy your course.

I decided to write to Rix if their still making guard rails. I might get an answer later on today or later this week.
If’n they don’t Pikestuff probably do.  I Googled both HO and N guard rails and am delighted to see that N are available. However, see my aside to Ulrich on the availability of roads on which to place them!

Must go guys, prayers for those in need – and glad there are improving situations being reported.Angel

I really like the Pikestuff guard rails in HO.

Pikestuff and Rix are actually the same company, although they do market under both names.

A single package of the guardrails makes about 7 linear inches of rails.  They are in short sections and come with a variety of end caps.  I find that there are not enough vertical supports, so I replace them with styrene shapes.

They come in gray plastic.  I paint mine silver and then give them a blast of Dull Coat to flatten them out but still make them look more metallic.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please

Have been MIA a few days but still drop by and see what is going on. Just have not been in the mood to type.

This morning I made some Train Time! Bang Head About a month ago I had a PK 1000 F-3 eat a decoder while cleaning the wheels on a DC track. Opened it up and found a wire end that may have touched the frame. Used shrink wrap and fixed it! Yes NOT! Bang Head BBQ'ed a new DH 166 to the tune of $29.00. Something I can not afford.

Speed Match Sort of one of my PK 2000 GP 30 with my Atlas GP 38. The Atlas decoder is sort of junk, decoder pro said it was a Bachmann decoder? This is a OLD Atlas, not the current offering. Had to get CV 6 up to 205 so the Digitrax sort of played nice with the Atlas Junk Decoder.

Did 4 hours worth of running. I did stop at K-10 Model and bought a replacement DH-166. (I will send the BBQ decoder back to Digitrax using there current goof proof warranty) I all so walked out with 3 more rolling stock I did not need?Whistling

YGW Turns out the engine is a Proto Heritage 2-8-8-2. Here is a link.

 http://www.walthers.com/exec/page/newoct01_f

Sure looks like a Y6b with out taking mine to sit beside it. It is DCC reday and has no sound. It is has never been run and has no road name on it. Price is $279.00. Good looking engine. I will send you a PM Friday morning.

Mr B belated Happy B-Day Why do you have Toes On Your Hand?

 Later, Ken

Go AHead, Make YOUR day!

I´ll try my very best, Galaxy!

Good Morning!

The sun is out, making me feel a tad better than yesterday. You could still send me to the floor with a touch of a feather, but at least the new medication I have to take seems to do its job.

I made a new video of my layout this morning. Still not the best quality as the light conditions are pretty bad. I still have to work out how I can add lighting to my layout.

Here is the video:

I´ll be staying at the RC for a moment, should someone care to join me there!

No, the cyclist came that way.  It's a Preiser set I've had for a few years now.  There are 2 others:

They seem to be in "team colors" so I strung them out along the same road.

Morning all ( Is it afternoon in Germany Ulrich ? )

Ken you will appreciate this story - it is a Jerry story -

There is this young couple from my Church and the husband ( we will call him Tim for the purposes of this post ) anyway he is an office type vs. a handy around the house type.

He needed work so I told him I would pay him X amount of dollars to help me remodel and clear fence rows. Yesterday he was to prepaint some trim before I install it ( Prime and semi gloss ) he painted about 15 minutes and then came inside sat down to "take a break" Bang Head after about two hours of working and breaking he came in announced that he had primed all of the trim. Great I thought. So I go outside to get him started on the semi gloss. First thing I see is a stack of crown mold unpainted ! Bang Head So I ask him why he didnt paint them. He says - I ran out of boards to lay them on. I look at him and think UH OH. I ask Tim why didnt he get more boards from the stack to lay them on his reply - he didnt know Bang Head

I tell him to go get more and as we are laying out the un pianted boards for him to prime I take a look at the boards he has already primed. Then I realize he has painted the WRONG SIDE ! He painted the side that goes agianst the drywall ! Bang HeadBang HeadBang Head He has painted the wrong side of over HALF of them !

So now I have paid Tim to take a break every fifteen minutes and to do half of it wrong !!!!

So I get him straightened out and going in the right direction. After I finished what I was doing I had to help him finish the work Bang HeadBang HeadBang HeadBang Head

It was not all a disaster. I took the oppurunity to teach this young man some life lessons. I explained to him that a man when he has a family he does what is necassary to provide for his family, how to properly paint, how to keep working even when it is painful and do it so it doesnt hurt, he gained a bunch of handi man skills that he can now take home to use to take care of his family.

Mr. B Love the cyclist - how did you fasten them so that they satyed upright ?

Ulrich - Hope you feel better, I am glad that even though you feel bad you keep in touch. That is hard to do when you feel bad. You do an amazing job on the videos.

Galaxy - That was a good word of the day. That word is one that I can relate to with the work I am in.

Ken - I will have to pass my frig has gone on teh blink and I am helping Tim out paying him to work around here. That is using up my extra funds for now. If it there later then maybe I can think anout getting it.

Ailene's Tacky Glue.  I put a dab on the bottom of each wheel, put the biker in place and support him with whatever is nearby and not glued down, typically a car or truck or maybe a small screwdriver.  An hour or two later the glue will be set and I can remove the supports.

Another nice thing about Ailene's is that it does not fully harden.  If I need to move a figure it comes off easily, and if I accidentally bump into it, the glue is the weakest part and I won't break the wheels of a bike or feet of a standing figure.  It's a cheap craft-store item, too.

Afternoon Diners,

Lately for the past few years I had pigeons trying to live under the garage. Next year they started a build a nest with a few pieces of branches. Now they succeed a few more.

When this was happening I was planning on placing a bed of nails (screws). So yesterday I finally built one 15x10 inch with about 24 screws.

Now comes the shocking news. They are willing to continue to build a nest with 3" long screws. I thought my idea would work. But I don't know if it will now.

Does anyone have ideas?

This is how I see it--it is the same guy (usually me) captured in a sequence of events.

  • Guy has banana (or water bottle, or gel packet, or...)
  • Guy drops banana
  • Guy stops to go back for banana

On the cycling front, I am always amazed at the difference a clean, lubed drivetrain makes. I cleaned and lubed mine before this morning's ride and it was like someone strapped a rocket on my back. (Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration.)

You will need wires around 8" long, on two inch centers to discourage the pigeons. They can be purchased through most lumber yards, or you can make your own out of coat hangers cut to 10-12 inches. I have made these in a pinch, used 2X2 to stick the wires in, and screwed to the drip edge. Make sure you cut notches for the water to drain as it comes off the roof.  Over the years I have installed more footage than I care to remember along the drip edge of many of the Sea Captain's homes here in the area. Most 3 1/2 stories off the ground. The pigeons would line up, some with their butt hanging over the edge of the roof. When they let go it left streaks down the siding. (now there is a weathering idea) The ones that stood out the most were the windows on the Widow's Walks on the top of the roof. Those roofs were the hardest to install from a ladder.

My brother has a carport that the swallows nested in, and pooed on his car. He obtained a rubber rattle snake, put it overhead, (snakes scare birds) and had them proceed to build a nest in the middle of said snake.

I helped him hang a large blue tarp just under the rafters, problem solved.

One of our customers was intoduced to a pellet rifle, I don't think his neighbors ever figured out how their cats became such good hunters.

Have you thought of covering where they're getting in with a wooden lattice?  If you bury it a bit into the ground it will keep out other creatures, too.  Get the pressure-treated stuff and it will last a while.

 Evening Dinners!

 Flo, Beer Please.

YGW, My Jerry Story For Today. Today I had to run the Florsanit store in MO. I did not want to run the store for the fact it is 25 miles from my house and my store is 10 miles from the house. Powers That Be said it would be better that I ran the store because I was equiped. Meaning I know more and make less mistakes.

Got to the store and just before I pulled in a white car pulled in the lot. I drove to the back of the store to get the key that was hidden under a rock, and pulled back to the front. Much to my Surprise there stood Jerry! Smile, Wink & Grin I opned my car door and first thing Jerry said was "I don't have a key to get in"? Then "What are you doing here, I was scheduled to work here"? Then he pulls out the schedul and shows me where My Name was listed at Florsanit. Then he got a blank look on his faces when he realized he should have been in my store not here! Whistling

Called the Powers That Be and said guess who is here? Gave Jerry the keys and code to the alarm. Drove to my store, a hour trip and opened the store a hour late. Far as I am concern it was great, I did not want to work in Florsanit anyway, much shorter time to get home!  Big Smile

Far as the Proto 2000 2-8-8-2, if you might want it, I bet it will still be there when you are ready!

Good Morning!

My automatic log in must still be working, so maybe I am not affected by MR´s security update. This move may not upgrade the site´s security, but it is certainly a neat and clever way to get rid of those thousands of dormant accounts Smile, Wink & Grin

I am not sure what I´ll be able to make out of this day. I hardly got any sleep last night and I feel wasted already at this early time in the day. Maybe running a train on my layout will perk me up a little, but that´s about all I can do as I am pretty much out of material to work with. The next bigger thing to do is to install the backdrop. for which I need a pair of skilled extra hands to help. Unfortunately,  I was not yet able to recruit this help.

Tomorrow, we have state elections in three of those 16 states we have in this country. Whatever the outcome will be, there won´t be a winner, just one big loser - democracy in this country. It´s time to pack up and go to a place, where there is freedom and sunshine!

The mail man brought a small parcel, which contained the sound device I had sent back to the vendor, because it was not working properly. Well, it does now and the reason it didn´t work when I tried it out gave me one of those "duh!" moments. The device works only with .mp3 files, which is clearly stated in the manual, but the file I uploaded to it was a .wav file. No wonder it wouldn´t work! I converted the file and now it works nicely. I have to do something about my layout´s 230V power upply before I can hitch it up, though. My friend Lothar as an electrician will come in handy for that job!

Come to think of it, I might uy another two of these sound device - one for the church bells and one for the moo cows! I bet Petra will enjoy the cacophony ...Whistling

Sir Madog

You're sadly not alone, Mein Herr.  I'd love to comment on our current 10 ring circus in the US, but the mods would probably beat me with cudgels and morning stars -- even if some of the budget ideas of some candidates would kill international trade and wreck the hobby (and everything else).  Just a complete fiasco.
