Evenin'....

Back a couple pages ago UP831 asked about the Girder Bridge I was building...  Well the bridge is now in plce on the layout, checked to make sure my longest Passenger Car and my 2-6-6-2 will go through it without a problem and I am now finishing the scenery around that area.

Here is a shot from under the bridge looking toward the tunnel that leads to the lower staging.

Hope everyone has a pleasent night.  My prayers to all who are in need!

Good evening diners.  Finishing up a rather busy week.  Our institute for learning in retirement finished up the winter term this past week with the viewing of  Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid.  The Friday course this winter session was called a Fist Full of Westerns and started out with the first western ever filmed, Edison's the Great Train Robbery filmed in Edison, NJ around 1903 using a real steam locomotive and passenger local for the train being robbed.  The course was lots of fun.  Enjoyed watching several classic old western movies.

Speaking of old movies reminds me that our little corner of Southeast Ohio has recently opened a renovated 950 seat theater built around 1905 for live stage performance and for showing movies.  It survived as an ongoing movie house up till the late 70's when the owner basically retired.  The building sat empty for many years but was purchased by a local businessman who had the vision of restoring the theater.  Well, after a couple of million dollars, the theater is open for business and is a real jewel.   We went to a Kathy Mattea concert Saturday night.  She is a faboulus performer at 56 years of age with over 18 major recordings to her credit.  She is somewhat of a local girl having grown up in West Virginia.  For a small town, it is really fortunate to have a performing center capable of hosting name entertainers and putting on Broadway types of plays.  The theater will host a performance of Oklahoma in June.  My 13 yr. old granddaughter has a part dancing in the young girl dream dance scene.  I am really looking forward to seeing her get to act and dance as she is already an accomplished award winning dancer.

Railroad scene, I finally am back to spiking down track.  Should be ready to fabricate another turnout some time this week.

YGW, you asked about what appeared to be copper track on my layout.  I think the color was due to the 2700 K LED lightbulbs overhead as the rail is Microengineering Code 83 nickel silver rail.  I enjoyed your painting experience description.   I have had similar experience with having Habitat volunteers prime trim.  Both the lack of common sense to lay down a few more boards to dry the trim and the painting the wrong side have been experienced by me working with volunteers.  What seems so obvious is alien to the uninformed and unskilled.

Healing prayers for those in need.

Time for a few z's now that day light savings is upon us.

Ulrich I am reading between the lines here and I hope I am wrong. But do you need a Heart Transplant?

Ken - this could very well be the case. I am in for a series of check-ups to find if there is any other way of boosting the performance of my old clockwork. It probably means I will be put in a hospital for a few days - might find that out in the next couple of days.

Ken - I am heeding your advice! Those check-ups I wrote about in my answer to Ken will be done at one of the most renowned cardio clinics in Germany.

Until all that is settled I´ll just have to grin and bear it!

Here is one more video which I think is wothwhile watching:

The video is tells the story of the Glacier Express in some spectacular footage. You will see scenes which will look familiar to you and you will hear sounds you heard before when watching my videos ...

Enjoy!

Ulrich: Sorry to hear that. We want you with us, not as a spirit who interferes with the forum! READ Gandolf the Grey's quote below:

arsenious

PRONUNCIATION:
(ahr-SEE-nee-uhs) http://wordsmith.org/words/arsenious.mp3

MEANING:
adjective: Relating to or containing arsenic (especially when trivalent).

ETYMOLOGY:
From Old French arsenic, from Latin arsenicum, from Greek arsenikon (yellow orpiment), from Arabic zarnik, from Persian zar (gold). Ultimately from the Indo-European root ghel- (to shine), which also gave us yellow, gold, glimmer, glimpse, glass, gloaming, melancholy, and choleric. Earliest documented use: 1818.

USAGE:

“The next time you’re having a bad day, pause for a moment to be grateful: that you weren’t born in the Victorian age and consequently are not likely to be in danger of being poisoned by arsenic. Come, come, you might be thinking. This is a slender reason to be cheerful -- who’s to say that anyone would wish to slip a splash of arsenious acid into my cup of tea?”

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have a Giants cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.

Spent all day yesterday with MOH cleaning out stuff.  Discovered things I didn't even know we had.  I went through one of my drawers that had a knotted together glob of lanyards collected from trade shows.  She started digging around and my reaction is leave the stuff alone.  Don't move it around.  I know right where it is.  She took the knot of lanyards, untangled them, and placed the ones I'm keeping in a little box and placed them neatly back in the drawer.  Well, I'm thankful because it does make things neater, and I still know where they are.

Ulrich:  I hope things turn out ok, and that you're back and in the groove.

Gotta go.

Hello, to everyone and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Good morning, everybody

Ray .... Your photos are outstanding !

Jim .... Is the Airdale liking the new home and family?

Galaxy .... Regarding the missing iphone cover, we looked in all the obvious places several times and the not so obvious places too. It remains a mystery how the cover came off in the first place. It fits snuggly and is not easily removed. ... Weird stuff happening.

Ulrich ... Good to hear you will go to an outstanding cardio clinic. Praying for heeling.

Planning a model railroad related trip to Paduch later today.

Happy Model Railroading !

Sir Madog

My automatic log in must still be working, so maybe I am not affected by MR´s security update. This move may not upgrade the site´s security, but it is certainly a neat and clever way to get rid of those thousands of dormant accounts Smile, Wink & Grin

It won't take effect until later this month.

This actually is the southernmost point on my layout, and there's a carfloat terminal nearby, so "South Ferry" is appropriate.  It's not a model of the real South Ferry station in NYC, but I took the name anyway.  This is gratuitous modeling.  It's entirely below the surface and can't be seen unless you crawl under the layout.  But, it's a lot more interesting than just a couple of undecorated staging tracks.  Someday I'll rig up a video camera, though, and that's why I put in the scenery.

Well, I slept well last night for the first time in 2 weeks.  The cough did not wake me up, not even once.

40 degrees and cloudy, though.  Our stretch of nice weather is over.  I did get out for a nice bike ride yesterday, taking the mountain bike over the old rail right-of-way for over an hour.  Yesterday it was 60 and sunny.

And ROAR some more!

South Ferry is one of the most interesting subway stations I've ever seen.  It's the end of the line, and the trains make that tight curve you see pictured in both the prototype and model presented by the LION.  Because of the curve, the platforms have mechanical extensions to let boarding and leaving passengers cross the gap without falling between the train and the platform.

Chloe, I'll have a piece of cherry pie.  Ray , I had never heard of pi day until this afternoon.  In my retirement learning math class today the instructor informed us that it was 3.1416 day, therefore pi day.  One of the participants looked up the origin of pi day in and it was started by some physist in 1988.  Who knew.

Garry,  the new airedale is fitting in well although she seems rather frightened by thunder.  As she probably came into rescue due to severe flooding in Mississippi, that is not at all surprising.

Time to head to the the basement and spike down more track.

Have a good week.

Also, only the first five cars of a train platform at South Ferry. If you are in the last five cars and did not heed the instructions to move forward, you will not get off, but will go around the loop and back to Rector Street.

They had built a new South Ferry Station, a real beauty, It could hold two ten car trains, but Super Storm Sandy took it all the way out, and so they are back in the old loop station. 500 million down the tubes. They are rebuilding it, of course, but it will be a while before it reopens, all of the sensitive stuff will be well waterproffed. Still is is a subway station and not a submarine. No matter what they do, water will get into it.

Well, I took train nut friend to a suicide survivors group...L.O.S.S.T....Lights of Suicide Survivors Together. He liked the group, and wants to go again next meeting next month. The group is comprised of those who lost a child or brother to suicide, is a small group, and it was good for Train nut friend. I was able to provide a perspective from the suicide {attempts} side, which provides some answers, but not all for those who survive.

Other NYC train nut friend is coming up the 28th.

We won't be doing much vacationing this year, gotta pay for the improvement to the house first! ANd we still have so MUCH we wnat to do, as we have the money. SO much.

Well, its past my bedtime here, still need to wind down form group, and then I go beddypoos.

JPowell - When you were discharged didnt they know then that you were wounded/disabled ? Geez that is EXACTLY why I dont want Gov. involved in my health care !

No. I was not wounded to the point of actually being disabled. Over the course of time, things like PT, combat training, lifting, etc, take tolls on the human body and since things like a lower back injury, and a neck injury, occur at any point and are not combat related, but are military service connected, you have to go through all the necessary VA paperwork and exams to verify they are service connected and then the VA makes a determination as to the serverity (percentage) of disability and award you compensation based on that percentage.

If it was that severe, I would have gone through what is called a Medical Board Review and discharged if severe enough to warrant it. And then if the percentage was high enough, compensation would be awarded based on it.

Also, compensation is not an automatic thing. The percentage must be over 25% in order to receive a disability compensation check each month. My combined disability rating from all of my injuries the VA says are service connected, is 50%.

Ah yes, Pi Day... it's popular in the Discover Magazine offices down the hall, where they bring in pies and pizza pies for everybody to snack on.

But around the Otte household, 3/14 has a different significance... White Day. This is a Japanese holiday equivalent to Valentine's, when men give sweet treats to the special ladies in their lives. (It's called White Day because it was started by makers of marshmallow candies jealous of the monopoly chocolatiers had on Valentine's business.) (The Japanese celebrate Valentine's too, but on that day, women give sweets to men.) Anyway... eight years ago, I told my girlfriend all about the Japanese traditions of Valentine's and White Day and convinced her to give me treats on Valentine's in return for a promise of something special from me on White Day. She was dubious, but agreed. That White Day, I showed up at her door with a tray of homemade brownies. The center one had been removed and replaced with a square box containing a ring, and that day, she became my fiancee. So, every year, while others eat pie for Pi Day, we mark White Day with sushi (which is what we ate on our first date). It costs more than pie, but it's so worth it. Dinner

Good Afternoon!

I was off-line since this morning, as our WiFi router finally gave up it´s ghost. Fortunately, we had a technician coming to check on our Internet connection and he installed a replacement router for very little money ($ 35, which has to come out of my MRRing budget - Sigh

Pi-Day? I missed it! I would have loved to have some pi(e) on Pi-Day, but I just did not connect 3/14/16 with pi, which I understand as:

3.

Sir Madog

Steven - White Day? Ladies giving candy to the beloved men? I think this is kind of nice! I think I´ll have White Days all year around ...

In Japan, Valentine's has kind of a Sadie Hawkins' Day vibe to it... it's a day when women give chocolate to their secret crush to let them know they're interested. Though things are kind of complicated by the parallel tradition of "giri-choco," or "obligation chocolate," which is candy that women are kind of socially obligated to give to all their male co-workers so nobody feels left out. (Just like when you had to give Valentine's cards to all the girls in your elementary-school class.) The social signals that let one tell the difference between the two kinds of chocolate are many and subtle.

White Day is when men reciprocate; their gifts for the women likewise contain subtle clues as to whether they welcome the ladies' expression of interest or want to remain just friends. It's a complicated dance.

Morning everyone!

Zoe, just sneaking in before the clock strikes 12...  I'll have a bowl of Organic Vanilla aqlmond Crunch cereal with a handfull of blueberries on it.  Oh need my pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee for my R&GV RR Mug as well.  Please and Thank You Ma'am!

I have already been out and around this morning.  Had to go to the Post office to get a couple rolls of those sticky thingies you put on envelopes, then to the Credit Union to order more checks for the MLK Committee.  Finally went over to Mother Earth Natural Foods to buy my month's supply of Coffee (Seneca Lake Blend and Marrakesh Express), some organic chocolate bars that are fantastic, and a bag of tropical dried fruit that I like to nibble on.

Steven, guess I started something with Pi Day.  I am not actually a mathmatician, but a musician...  We do a lot of good numbers though!  I have been celebrating March 14 as Pi Day for several years now.  Fun!  I like that Japanese Tradition!

I have to make a run to Canandaigua this afternoon.  Need to drop off a check to the Sholarship fund and take my suit coat in to be dry cleaned.  Needs it badly!  Unfortunately there is not a dry cleaner left in Geneva, where I live.  may have some time in the train room.  YES!!!!

Later!

Hello all

Garry  - I am well - well covered up at w**k from being out four days ! The sales agent has been BUSY - She has sold 6 houses in the last month alone - I am about to be well covered up with w**k. Sigh I suppose that is a good problem to have.

SIL update - it seems things are taking a turn for the better finally. The saw bones have her on a new med which seems to be helping her greatly and she is starting to show signs of improvement and better decesion making ( she had brain damage in the area of the brain that makes decisions )

Steve - I had no idea you were such a romantic type ! Way to go.

Ulrich - I have a few extra HO scale figures. Would you like some for your layout.

Galaxy - Have you sent the PM yet ?

Ken - Read you PM. You are welcome and thank you.

All the rest have not had time to read post yet but will later. Look forward to touching base with everyone.

They sell jackets for dogs in pet stores that are called "THUNDER JACKET or SHIRTS" and they really work well. It is almost like a compression shirt that holds tight to the body, but it seems to give them comfort. It sure has worked for us.

Today has been busy....  I know, so what else is new for me....  Got most everything done I needed to do though and that was the good part.  Not so good is...  I think I mentioned a dear friend of mine from the MLK committee lost her husband to cancer last week after several years of struggle.  This is a family that has been the model of being hard working, frugal, and having their values in the right places.  The husband who passed away worked most of his life for a paving company in Penn Yan (owned by a relative I believe), the wife was a Secretary at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and she retired a few years ago.  I met the lady not long after I moved to Geneva (tought a couple of her children) and knew she was always helping people in need.  Took in to her house many kids who had been in trouble or had no family that could take care of them, etc.  Three of her 4 children are college graduates one of which was an MLK Scholarship recipient many years ago.  That young lady now has a major scholarship named for her at the Universary she graduated from.  Anyway, found out she has a very large medical balance that she will have to be responsible for from the last couple years of her husbands illness.  Not only that but the Rev. who is the President of the Committee stopped in to pick up the Dinner invites today and was very saddened to tell me the lady can't even live in her home at the moment because of some major plumbling problems.....  The committee is in the process of voting to give a chunk of money to help the lady pay some of her bills.  This is from our working money (much of which the lady raised...).  I will be giving a good sized check to her both for her needs and to her daughter's Scholarship in honor of the ladies husband...  I think many of our committee members will be giving generously to her.

Whenever a friend loses a spouse, it brings back some tough feelings for me anyway....  April 15 this year would have been my 50th. wedding anniversary.......

I did take a few more photos of the bridge area today.  Looking for a shot I may be able to enter in the Photo Contest at the Convention in May...  I will be taking a bunch more with various different angles and items in the picture before makingn up my mind which one to use...  here are a couple I took today:

I think the first one is the best of the two...

Have a great night everyone!  My prayers for all of you in need...

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

I don't know if it has been do to the time change or something eles but I been feeling way tired. After I read all the post, I just don't feel like typing.

YGW Happy to read some good news about Kelly for a change! Yes By the way, you never told me how many wheels sets you would like or manufacture. With Proto 2000 there is 12 wheels per pacakge. I use them and like them. I think K-10 all so has Inter-Mountain wheels as well. Give me a idea how many you would like and I check the cost and buy as many as I can for you.

Ulrich You must set your standerds very high! You have a nice looking layout.

Train Front Does not look good for trains my next few days off. Weather is going to be great and I have to get back to work on the backyard and fence. I did get a old Bachmann 40 foot C&O Box car on the rails. Bought it for 94 cents at K-10 Model Trains. Added body mounted Kadee #5's, PK 2000 wheels and added some weight. Works well and looks good with the C&O RS-2.

 See you all Wed, Ken
