Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner - March 2016
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 29, 2016 11:37 PM

In memory of

Jeffrey Scott Wimberly

July 07, 1960-December 15, 2014

AKA Running Bear, Dr. Frankendiesel, The Spray Can Rembrandt

Volunteer firefighter, exceptional model railroader

and dear friend to many of us.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner was formerly Elliot´s Trackside Diner, but was renamed to honor our dear friend Jeffrey "Running Bear" Wimberly.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner is a meeting place for all who wish to join. We may talk on-topic, but also off-topic here (as a matter of fact - the only place tolerated by our hosts), but always within the framework of the forum policy.Talk about your ongoing or future model railroading projects, show us your latest acquisitions or simply share your day.

If you need to let off some steam, you can do it here, but beware - Cousin Vinnie, the proprietor, is keeping a close watch on the language and is unforgiving when it comes to violations of the house rules, same as the general forum rules! As Vinnie is slowly getting of age, Steven has stepped in and, believe me, he is as vigorous as Vinnie was in his younger days when it comes to avenging any violation.

The staff is exceptional, and anything you desire to eat is available 24/7/365. This would includeJanie, the twins Chloe and Zoe, Flo, Daisy and the latest addition, Brunhilda ! The food is always excellent and tasty, just the way you like it!

So, pull yourself in, bank you fire, and sit a spell and enjoy!

Enjoyed the monorail, viewed some of the other videos at that site. Looks like a simple solution to inner-city movement.

Hello Railfans! I hope everyone is doing ok. Things are fine here. Wanted to stop in and say howdy since I havent been able to be here alot as of late. Hope i didnt miss anything important.

Not much going on on the railroad scene. Model, railfanning, or otherwise. Seems the day to day goings on have control over my time as is the case with some of you as well im sure.

I just found out there is a train show this weekend. Id like to attend if possible. Gotta have some fun, right? You folks take care. I will be in touch.

Hello all

Ulrich - talk about an elevated railroad! What a neat system!

Tried painting the body of an N-scale bay window caboose last night. Only appropriate color I had was water base and didn't cover well. So I rinsed it off and will try a primer first.

I did make some more progress on the 1/600 scale Mauretania model I am working on (one of my other hobbies). Got the funnels painted and a couple more decks glued on.

Good Afternoon!

I am feeling pretty miserable today. My BP went into the basement and decided to stay there until further notice. The crazy thing is that my heart rate went over the roof and also has no intention to come down. If things don´t improve soon, it´ll mean a trip to the ER.

YGW - how about Switzerland for the month? There is plenty to see, as this country must be the Lord´s train set (no blasphemy intended).

Ulrich - talk about an elevated railroad! What a neat system!

It´s been around for 115 years to this date and is still going strong. It is certainly one of the safest mode of transportation. The line's only fatal accident occurred close to Robert-Daum-Platz station during maintenance work in the early morning hours of 12 April 1999. Workers had forgotten to remove a metal claw from the track on completion of scheduled night work. The first eastbound train of the day hit the claw at a speed of around 50 km/h (31 mph), derailed, and fell about 10 metres (33 ft) into the river Wupper, killing 5 passengers and leaving 49 injured.

Lutz Hielscher of Germany makes an nice HO scale  and a N scale set of it, unfortunately rather pricey.

Good morning everybody . I'll have oatmeal and OJ please.  ... We returned from Nashville late last night. .. My appointment yesterday with the cardiologist went well. ... We went to Nashville Sunday to allow time to visit with Shelley's family.

It is great to see so many people in the Diner. The cook is working jard to keep up.

Ulrich ... Thanks for starting the March Diner.

Barry ... Glad you can post. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Steven ... I hope you and Mrs. Otte get well soon. Take care because colds can evolve into worse illnesses.

Galaxy ... I hope your illness goes away very soon. It has been too long.

There are many little projects awaiting me on the model railroad, and I'm anxious to get to work. Been too busy with other stuff lately .

Happy Model Railroading !

Happy New Month to all from Northern Virginia.  All is well here with fine weather gracing us at this time (subject to change).  Will be traveling to my old neighborhood of Queens, New York in 2 weeks which will include a pilgrimage to Trainland in Lynbrook.  Hope everybody is well and time now to run the late commuter before having to go to work (late shift today).

All the best.

As of late, I have been in a MRR funk. Last December, I added an 8' extension to my N-scale layout making it a 11'2"x13'8" L-Shaped, dog-bone layout. I was all excited, laid all of the track, wired up all of the switches, only to discover that I had not installed insulated joiners everywhere they were required. (I installed about half of the necessary joiners.) On my first trial layout, I tried using a Dremel to cut the insulating gaps and I was really not happy with the outcome, thus the decision to use the insulated joiners. There is no way I am going to rip up everything to install the joiners, so I am stuck having to cut the gaps, thus the funk. My plan is to take some track scraps, glue them down on some scrap wood, and practice the art of the cut, but I am having trouble bringing myself to try. I really hate not knowing what I am doing.

On a bright note, the piano tuner is coming today to tune our new piano. We have had it for about two months now, and between the move and settling into the new environment, it is sounding pretty bad. I am about as excited for the tuner to come as a five-year-old on Christmas Eve.

I will give that a try. It could be my technique, or lack thereof, with the Dremel, but the gap ends up gaping, especially on the N-Scale track.

Reinhard - From Northern Va ? Where abouts ?

Jim - That is a great Magazine. I have never heard of plate glass sharpening. What is that ? Funny story - once on the site we were seing who could get their chisels the sharpest. So I sharpened mine so well that after I sharpened it I put it in the side pouch and it went right through. It cut the bottom of the leather and down on to the ground !!! Whistling

BO Cylinder - Watch out for that secret admirer. Audrey may be setting you up to check you out and then you will get another swish bang zinnnnnnggggggg Dead

UP831 - Mexican !! Any left overs ? Dinner

Ken - I have a saw bones appointment at 1:30 my time call me around 2 or 3.

v8 - Are you kidding me ? No proof required to show you are a citzen ? That is criminial !!!! Do you use glasses for your vision ?

Chris - Do you ever get homesick ? I cant imagine living in another country. I work with LOTS of spanish folks. They come here intending to make a pile of money and then return. Most end up staying because of the crooked Gov. and crooked police in their home countries.

CN Charlie - Which BLI were you running ?

Galaxy - I hope you feel better soon

Johnboy - Thanks please continue to keep SIL in prayer. She is not in a good place.

Richard - do you have some old bras track you can practice on ? What blade are you using in the drimel ? Is it variable spead ? Did you make a jig to run it through ?

Ulrich - I laughed so hard I guess there is more than one distraction in a gym ! Switzerland is Awsome !  Where we headed first ?

Howmus, Garry, Lion, Bob......Hello and good morning. I have some good ole Virginia scrapple left over if you want some and there are a few biscuits left too.

Gotta run. Verry busy and have to go see sawbones today and see if they can figure out why my ticker keeps jumping in and out of rhythm.

Morning diners,

Since I decided to model the NH Berkshire Division loosely based by deleting the river and the tunnel, but keeping the lake. It may not be the Conrail Boston Line or CSX Boston Subdivision.

I received my track yesterday and installed a half circle of the 13_3/4" with the 15" together side by side. It worked, I had a few problems. I'm keeping the track away until it's ready to glued down. Without knowing the proper alignment for switches... Future track will come. This year I hope.

I'm relearning building a model railroading. It's a nice change from buying freight cars and locomotives.

Richard,

Ihave often used a razor saw to cut gaps in rail Smile

( HO gauge); somethings to watch:

saw slowly as you get near the bottom of the rail - I found its better to not cut through the plastic tie material underneath the rail of you can help it.

I take an extra tie and file it down until it is thin enough - about 1/32" -and will fit into the gap: I add glue to the gap and insert the filed-down tie plastic, and nip it off.

after the glue sets i use a small file/fine sandpaper to file off the  projecting pieces of plastic..  On HO gause Code 83 track, the plastic is nearly invisible.

(I also paint my track which is even better for hiding the isolation point.)

Good Luck

. . .Richard - do you have some old bras track you can practice on ? What blade are you using in the drimel ? Is it variable spead ? Did you make a jig to run it through ? . . .

Basically, it is the budget Dremel knockoff from Harbor Freight, so there is no variable speed, and the blades are whatever came with it. As for a jig, I wouldn't even know where to start.

As for some old brass track, all I have are scrap pieces of Peco nickel silver track.

I was just looking and I am not sure I could use a razor saw. The reason for the cut is to isolate the frog. There does not appear to be enough room to make the cut without running into the other track. I only need to cut one of the legs, as I remembered to use an insulated joiner on the other leg. I made this same mistake, not once, not twice, but five times. (I was just sick when I realized what I had done.)

Barry If you can take a shower, you must have gotten rid of your drains.  Prepare to be extremely tired when you get home.  A walk down the hall is easy, around the block is going to be a long way the first time you try.

Loco Guy Jelly babies.  I remember Tom Baker eating those (Doctor Who #3) Are they like our jelly beans?

I stripped my train show caboose in alcohol and rattle can sprayed it primer gray

The LHS only had Ford and Chevy engine blue as anything close to what I wanted, which was something a hair lighter than CSX blue.  Ken might like it for his hot rods, but not for me and my caboose.

Back to the hobby shop and got MM Acryl black.  Added 6 drops to 2cc of the blue.  Mixed it well and it looked pretty good.  Either I had too much thinner or I got condensation in my 6 gal compressor, but I got dots with little color.  I hit is with the hair dryer and gave it another coat.  Better but still a couple of dots.

Hair dryer and another coat.  The enemy of good is better and this coat turned the caboose black.  I did not take a picture but imagine midnight black with a drop of CSX blue.

The caboose is now back in the alcohol.

Evening Gang!

Chloe - How about a nice super sized 5 scoop hot fudge sundae.... Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip, Butter Pecan, Maple Walnut and Coffee for the 5 scoops, please? Whipped cream, nuts and a cherry on top as well? And a glass of water to drink? Thanks!! Big Smile

Sorry for my absence again. I hope this finds everyone in good health. Angel to those in need.

I have been doing a lot these last few weeks since my last visit. My gf and I painted both the kitchen and living room here at my house a few weeks ago. Still have the 3 bedrooms, hallway between them and family room to paint. Have a few odds and ends to fix up as well before I can seriously consider putting my house up for sale and moving south to some place like Georgia.

She has been job hunting for a decent teaching position, mainly in Georgia (she has a worker's comp case that is about to be finalized and her laywer told her Georgia is one of the few states she can live in and collect a f/t teacher's salary and her full NYS Worker's Comp settlement checks).

So, since my job(s) don't keep me in NYS (they're all transferrable to other states), I too am looking at various jobs down there as she has said she would like for us to be able to move someplace that allows us to grow our relationship, life, and careers without being scrutinized by either of our parents, like they do now. Almost like a "fresh start" type of thing.

Anyways, that said, obviously my train stuff is being put on hold until the dust settles and we either move or stay put (mostlikely move).

And now that my sundae is here, I am off to teh corner booth to eat it and hopefully catch some mainline action.

Take care!

Evenion' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for the moment, please.

Been a long a day here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS today.  Spent most of the day finishing up the art winners from the MLK Art and Poetry Contest.  Got all the photos taken, then I run them through Photoshop to adjust several thing before saving them for posterity.  Some will get used in the Slide show I do for our Scholarship Banquet, and a couple will get printed in the Banquet Program.

Got my hearing aids cleaned and reset this afternoon and then went over to the LHS and spent more $$$.  Got a water/ air presure rocket toy for my granddaughter #2 for her birthday on Saturday.  Still want to buy her a gift card for clothes somewhere.  Need to find out where my DIL buys clothes that is a place I will patronize....  Won't get her a card for a place I won't go to!

Tomorrow i hope to get most of the Art and Poetry back to the School Buildings, get my mile in at the Fieldhouse, and have a Scout Roundtable to be at in the evening.  Might even time to work on the layout for a few minutes.....

Good to see some old friends back in here!  Have a great night and prayers for all in need of them!

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer please. Flo, if that Buick Guy shows up, given him a Beer on my tap!

Work Front Was pretty boring. Took a Proto 2000 50 Automobile Box Car Kit to work to work on. Rivet Counters must have very small fingers! Took me 15 minutes to install only 2 grab irons, broke 2 trying to cut them off! Whistling I decided after that point I don't need no stinking Grab Irons!

YGW, well you know by now I called. Messed up and wrote down the home number and not your cell number.

Train Front Wanted to get some resistors solderd to LED's, could not find the new srink wrap I just bought. OK, I will fix Green House Lights in the PK 2000 GP 30's, could not find the needed screw driver. Well, they are running well tonight so far so I am still happy.

Berry, Hum you where a Belly Button guy, so sorry about that! Smile, Wink & Grin (Belly Button what small block Chevy is called, every body has one) Glad you are on the mend.

Hello all

Finishing up the last shift for the week. Looking forward to finding a pillow.

Just about finished up the Mauretania model I am working on. Need to find a better mount than what came in the kit. I plan on displaying it w/ a framed postal envelope that was actually mailed thru the real ship.

Bay window caboose will have to wait. I need the coupler kit anyways. May try to pick up some primer among a few other things at the LHS on my week off.

Oh. and for the car guys here, I have 3 Corvairs.
