Mornin' everyone!

Ooooooooo....  I can barely move this morning!  Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of sour dough toast.  Oh, bring over the Advil as well!  I'll wash it all down with a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee.

I am hurting today.  I probably should w*rk like I did yesterday every day.  I wouldn't hurt so much like I do right now.  Back is killing me and both arms are sore, not to mention my feet.

I figured some of you would like my comment about the spiders..... Laugh  These were small wolf spiders and cellar spiders.  Completely harmless and beneficial little critters.  The rare (around here) Black Widows and Brown Recluse types get dispatched very quickly. We didn't see anything that posed any danger to us, so they just got knocked off whatever they were on and allowed to scurry away.  Rather have them around than cockroaches any day!

Today will be clean up around here day.

Galaxy, hope everything moves along quickly with the house and that closing and moving day will happen before sn*w flies in the Southern Tier!  I remermber that down there most folks treat a half inch of light and fluffy about the same as we treat a foot or so up here in the Northern Finger Lakes.... Whistling Laugh

Have a great one out there!

Hey now!  We're not like people to our south, who shut everything when there's a possibility of flurries!  What do you expect in the DC area, though!Surprise

We moved into our house on Veterans Day a few years ago, and it was still warm outside -- warm enough that, a week or so later, we had an incursion by a bat!  So, maybe Galaxy should hope for cold, snow and ice for when he moves into his new place.

Happy delateled birthday Galaxy.

Can't talk long, just in case connection is lost again. It comes and goes on. Sometimes I might get 10 minutes or 30 seconds.

I bought an Atlas RS1 Illinios Terminal shell. That well be renamed in the G.N.O. Railway. Timeline 1941-1964 before it gets renumbered into the 100 series.

i been thinking of the Carolina Central layout for a while (of building it again). Or perhaps a small Conrail layout...

Gooooood Morning!!!

Coffee please, thanks. Oh and make the page my ticket. It’s been awhile.

Looks like Ulrich is gone 3D since I was last in.Yes

Wow!Surprise September is about gone. Seems like the Fall Festival was just yesterday instead of the beginning of the month. But, not much else going on and nothing new to report. Harvest is in full swing so that’s keeping Brenda busy for some long hours 7 days a week. But still, nothing new or unusual.
Looks like the Railroad (UP) is running way behind so shutting down the crossing for the new signal system install, which is the only way to get from one side of town to the other effectively cutting one side off from the other and of course, the highway, may not take place until next year instead of the first of October (rumor).  At least a five mile trip either direction through the country to get to the next crossing. Some people are pretty upset, me….., Huh?meh. Just a thing. Never know what’ll happen if congress doesn’t extend the deadline. Just as well I suppose, as we speak Ameren, the gas/electric company, is replacing ALL the gas lines in town, so it is a mess around here.

Just kinda skimmed the month so my apologies if I missed anything, so I’ll just say;

Happy late Birthdays, my condolences to lost pets, Congrats on housing finds and of course it goes without saying, prayers for illnesses and pains, operations and procedures to be taken care of.

Oh, and Ken- Generally no, the garage is not part of the advertised square footage attached or not. Square footage is designated as living space. Generally neither is the basement UNLESS the basement is COMPLETELY finished. Most will leave at least one room unfinished so as to keep the square footage down for property tax purposes, hence the term "partially finished basement" such as ours. But I’ve seen some realtors who will slide the basement area in the total SF to make the house sound bigger instead of as an additional description as they should. I have also seen a time or two when they measure the outside of the house to figure sq footage, especially in a house designed as yours, and have mistakenly added the garage. But, at 1500sq ft, I’d say no, the garage has not been incorrectly added. Your house looks bigger to me than a 1000 to 1100 ft house if they did. Your appraiser will re measure.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good Afternoon, Folks!

There is an awfully nice smell coming from the kitchen - Petra has made my favorite apple pie! This will again mean a heavy attack on my idea to reduce weight - Sigh

Happiness is...

... being able to run a train over my make-shift layout and even make a short film from it! Please excuse the poor quality, but that´s the best I can get out of my 10 year old Panasonic DSC.

Galaxy - how come you have to spend $$$ to "join in the saving"?

Spiders and I have an agreement,,,if they stay out of my way and I don't see them, fine, But if they get in my way, SMASH!

My wife wanted to include the phrase "love, honor, cherish, and kill spiders on your behalf as till death do us part" in the part of the vows I said.

Happy belated birthday, Galaxy!

I went and saw Dad in Elmira today, then took a side trip to the Canton, PA area to shoot pics of an abandoned creamery.  Since I was that close, I ran down to English's down in Manuresville.  Too much money later, I was on my way back to Dad's, then home.  BTW, if you like modern railroading, I recommend this new book, CSX In Action.  Great pics, and it's relatively inexpensive for a hardback.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a refill on the decaf please.

Just got home from a nice dinner at Club 86 here in Geneva.  The meal was "Jimmy's Famous Chicken", a staple at the place.  It was the annual NAACP Dinner.  Great company (got to see some of my students from years ago) and sat with other members of the MLK Committee, powerful speaker with a very positive message.  I even was friendly enough to shake hands with our mayor.....  Ok, so I have known the guy for years and he is doing a good job leading the city.  (His wife was a teachers aid at the Middle School for several years...)  Several of the awards given out went to a group of citizens who meet every Tuesday to discuss problems going on and find ways to resolve conflict and get some positive things done.  One of those people is a very good friend of mine who is the president of the MLK Committee.  Our superintendent of Schools was also there and was recognised for the work she has done to get all students the best education possible!

Spent most of the day with my son taking down the old metal shed off the back porch today.  Lots of rusty screws and bolts, had to remove the shelves I built into the things 20 years ago, and more spiders than most of you would like to deal with I'm sure.  Actually since my son is a Fish and Wildlife guy, we made sure all the spiders we found were carefully removed so they can live out there little lives and get rid of more bugs around the place.  Useful little critters I always like to help out.  Son took all the steel and galvanized metal over to his house where much of it will be repo=urposed as roofing for his woodpile.  The rst will go to the junk yard where he will probably get enough for it to pay most of gas for driving over there.

I should be feeling the pain from the days w*rk about the time I try to roll out of bed tomorrw morning.....

Hope all of you have a restful night!

Good Evening,

A fine day here in Winterpeg and a mild evening too. I was just outside in shirtsleeves which is unusual to say the least for this  time of year.

Happy Birthday Galaxy!! and good luck with the house.

Ken, up here the garage isn't classified as living space even if attached so the area of the house would be excluding the garage.  As far as dry rot goes, I do know what it is from my many years as a boat owner. The only way to tell if a timber has dry rot is to push a blunt knife blade into it and if it sinks in easily the timber likely has dry rot. Such wood is 'dry' and it tends to just flake apart if you dig into it. I can't see how you can tell if it is in your roof without actually going up on it and inspecting.  If your roof wood is rotten due to moisture and is wet  then it is just rotten, and not dry rot. At least that is my take on it.

We have our annual train show here this weekend and I will attend on Sunday. Doubt if I'll buy much though. I did pick up a few kits last year and may do so again if I can find something other than boxcars.

Well time for a little TV and a snack. Still haven't unpacked the new TV. Maybe next week.

well, unfortunately dinner will be:

chuck roast showered in beef broth, garlic and seasonings; rice and pasta bits {pilaf} with mushrooms and toasted almonds; toasted Garlic bread salad with oil/vinegar/italian seasonings.

I say "unfortunatley" as I am the one cooking it!!! the roast is in the pressure cooker now, and the rice is soaking.

Fine B-day dinner, too bad I have to cook it!

oh wel, we can't afford dinner out now as we are saving for house!! It will cost aobut $13.00-15.00 for this dinner, split by two and a second meal too, so -$3.25-3.75 per plate isn't bad! can't get THAT eating out!

have a fine night!

Ken: As you know, I am a "newbie" to house hunting/ownership. It usually is spelled out on sf..is it "HEATED SF"? or "Total SF" they are looking for?

Your house is pretty easy rectangle. Measure it with wifey holding the end. Measure only the house rectangle and then measure the garage rectangle. Take length times width and you got your sf. {I think you know that part} If you have both the house sf and the garage sf simply add together if they want WHOLE SF.

FOr insurance purposes YOU'D BEst tell the whole sf as you would want the garage rebuilt too!!!!!! You need a train room!

BITE the bullet and get an appraisal..probably not a bad idea anyway since you have had such problems. Its only $400, I reallize that is a LOT of money to people like you and me, but I paid $420.18 to have ours done, and we are not even allowed to see it! It will help you to know the current value of your house, and may even get hints on what repairs are needed to bring it up to a higher price. We will have to do a survey of ours to be SURE the fence is say, on the line or not.

Next: I ASKED the finance company we are using : "DO you sell your loans or keep them?" He said :"we sell about half of them'. Ours will be close, so I imagine ours will get sold-may not matter if payments are all on time or not!.

I plan to refi {if rates are still favorable} to a local bank for sure when we get to the 3-5 year mark{s}, IF they sell it!! Unless rates go sky high! I am like you, I want to walk into a brick & Mortar building and TALK to someone if there is  a problem. The finance company {broker really} said they will "always be there to help if somehting goes wrong"... we will surely see IF  aproblem arises!

Adjustable at 8 Years? chances are it will go up, so LOCK IN a lower rate, even if you have to go to another bank or Credit union- you do belong to a credit union rihgt???? if not, find one local whose membership requirements you meet and JOIN NOW! Ours may NOT qualify us, as we are so close on the payment business. we may not even qualify period-we find out in 2-3 weeks. we are on pins and needles. Our rate is FIXED at 3.78%.so I took it! I was hoping for under 4, 3.5% would have been better, but I'll take 3.78 or is it 3.87? My father's VA loan in 1967 was 5.25%!!!

BEST of LUCK TO YOU ken! AND to US!

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, I will have a Beer and put Galaxy bill on my tap.

 Happy B-Day Galaxy CakeGift

Talk to my Bank today about a new house loan. I like what I was told, to a point.

1 Credit score is fine for a VA loan, they need a 640 and mine is 664.

2 If I borrow $85,000 (I owe around $72,000) my house payment would be about the same. That way I can get something's fixed like a new roof.

3 My income is suffecent for a VA loan for $85,000.

 What I did not like!

1 They need a appraisl, I sure don't blame them but if I don't get the loan I lose $400.00.

2 They sell there VA loans! I really don't like that! While Bank Of Stupid is not on there list of who they sell VA loan's to. I rather have a local bank keep the loan.

3 If I don't use VA they do keep the loan. But! They only have a fix rate for 8 years.

So I am still up in the air about the whole thing. Need to get some bid's on the roof and new windows.

 YRW and others House questions.

1 Does the Sq Foot of the house inc the garage or just the living space? I have been told my house is 1504 sq foot.

2 What is classified as dry rot? My current home insurances covers up to $2500.00 in dry rot. Some parts of the wood that shows on the roof has moss growing on it. There are holes under the moss. There where never any shingle's where the moss has grown.

 Part I am talking about.

It can be seen on the left hand side in this photo.

I will see you all later.

Happy Birthday To You GaLaXy,  and many more on your agenda...

Also congrats on the new home and hope all that goes well for you.

Not much to report here. I have been busy with fall yard work and I worked last evening from 5:00 pm til 10:00 pm and all day today and tomorrow, so not much time for the LM&E.

Ulrich, that is a great start to your little Empire.  Give my thanks to Claus from us for helping you out when the rest of us couldn't.  It looks terrific.  Hi to Petra too.

YGW,  hope you are healing well and back to normal in no time.

Someone mentioned that Jarrel  (Jason) hasn't been on the Forums for sometime. Sure hope he is alright. Does anyone have any knowledge whats going on with him ?  I always enjoyed his postings.

A big HI to all our MIAs, you are all remembered fondly, and we eagerly await your return to the Diner.  Remember we are always open.

Garry, hope you enjoy the heat that just doesn't want to quit there in the SW.  Safe travels and have fun.

Hope you all have a great week-end, stay healthy, and keep smiling.

Happiness is ...

Claus "delivered" the layout table today. It did nnot fit into his car, but he has a trailer, so taking the table to my place was no issue. Without his help, I´d have  had no chance to get to this point - thanks again, Claus!

Putting up the track nearly took me an hour. It´s a quite difficult job to accomplish when your left side isn´t working properly. Somehow, I managed though. Now I can run my trains.

Happy Birthday to Galaxy today!

So, i feel *yawn* Older today, but not so much wiser!

And with a new house on the way, broker!

Today's word:

holophrasm

PRONUNCIATION:
(HOL-uh-fraz-um) http://wordsmith.org/words/holophrasm.mp3

MEANING:
noun
1. A one-word sentence, for example, “Go.”
2. A complex idea conveyed in a single word, for example, “Howdy” for “How do you do?”

ETYMOLOGY:
From Greek holos (whole) + phrasis (speech). Earliest documented use: 1862.

USAGE:
Holophrasms aren’t common in English, but any verb in command form can be holophrastic -- Go, Help, Run.”
Kathryn Schulz; What Part of ‘No, Totally’ Don’t You Understand?; The New Yorker; Apr 7, 2015.

Today's Quotes:

Our conscience is not the vessel of eternal verities. It grows with our social life, and a new social condition means a radical change in conscience. -Walter Lippmann, journalist (23 Sep 1889-1974)

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.

Expect problems and eat them for breakfast.

The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.

Happy B-Day TO me!

Make it a great day!

I just got an email saying my 3 BLMA ATSF RBL freight cars lefted in the mail today. Two years ago I reserved them with the numbers that I carefully picked out. Then I carefully overlooked at my receipt seeing no car numbers that I picked. This is the third time this has happened. Bang Head Next time I'll write in big bold letters Please Read before packing but we will see what happens on Friday or Saturday. Why pack things away and not double checking on specific numbers in the comments section.

it's happened to me, too.  It may be a case where those numbers were very popular and you were low on the list so they sent you what they could, or someone wrote something down wrong.  It could've been worse -- you could've gotten two complete orders that were both wrong!

Good Morning on this 25th day of September 2015!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GALAXY!

May you have many happy moons to come in your new teepee!

It´s rather wet at the moment. I hope we´ll have a dry spell when my friend Claus is "delivering" the finished layout cabinet. It´ll take some time before w*rk on the benchwork can start, so in the meantime I´ll play with a temporary set-up. Before setting that up, I will have to dismantle the old support structure for the now long gone On30 layout!

Have a great day!

 Afternoon Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Well I am the only drip left in the house! I got the dripping / small stream shower handel fix and as I was afraid a burst elbow pipe under the house fixed. Plus, I got the shut off valve under the bath room sink fixed! Had not had warm water in the bathroom sink for something like 10 years!

He charges only $65.00 a hour! He was here 2 hours so with parts total bill was $182.00. First he told me $292.00 as the total? Hum, Ed how did the total get this high? Said he made a math error, then the total became $182.00.

YGW PCM was the high end of BLI when I got in the hobby. It stands for Precision Craft Models. The bodys are pot metal (well I am guessing that what it is) , very heavy and pull's great! At a Christmass Party at K-10 it pulled 80 loaded coal cars up a 2% grade with out any problem!

 See you all Friday

I just got an email saying my 3 BLMA ATSF RBL freight cars lefted in the mail today. Two years ago I reserved them with the numbers that I carefully picked out. Then I carefully overlooked at my receipt seeing no car numbers that I picked. This is the third time this has happened. Bang Head Next time I'll write in big bold letters Please Read before packing but we will see what happens on Friday or Saturday. Why pack things away and not double checking on specific numbers in the comments section.

Don't bash Fox News as a purveyor of false info, Ray.

That is why I said Faux News....   was being inclusive. Smile, Wink & Grin  And in this case what was said does not have basis in fact.  It is not new and is not coming from the states but rather a federal Law that has been on the books since 2005.  It was a direct result of 9/11 designed to protect us.  I was not expressing any polictical opinion but stating facts.

Usually, whenever someone says Faux News, it's a derogatory reference to Rupert Murdock' s US news network.  But, if you're including everyone in this (CNN, ABC, NBC, PBS, CNN, etc.), that's  a different story.

Ulrich - I must say that your carpentry work from the photo looks pretty decent !! Great job. So glad you have a MRR friend and that you are back in the game - That is terrific !

YGW - Claus is a very good friend, but not into MRRing. He was my comrade in arms while I was campaigning for "Bundestag" 2 years ago. Luckily, I didn´t make it Whistling

Claus is one of the very few persons I don´t need to talk to in order to communicate. We feel and think very much alike - a wee bit like Stan and Olly Laugh

Edit: Claus just sent me a picture - the layout cabinet now has wheels!

At this time tomorrow, I will have a train circling the temporary set-up!

Garry wrote - At present, I have a track on my new section which is isolated from the rest of the layout. I'm running my old DC engines on it, and one of them is an old Rivarossi N&W 2-8-8-2 which still runs fine... I thought you would be interested because you like N&W. I also have a nicely made N&W caboose made by Life Like.  I have some N&W coal hoppers too... So I currently am doing a litte N&W."   WOW Garry I had no idea you had any N&W That is awesome !!!!! One thing for sure is that you will not need any coal for heat where you are headed ! 105 OH MY !

GALAXY Happy birthday = early : )

Lion - trash trains ? What the heck is that ? A string of Bachmans ? Smile, Wink & Grin

Ulrich - I must say that your carpentry work from the photo looks pretty decent !! Great job. So glad you have a MRR friend and that you are back in the game - That is terrific !

Ken - I dont have a photo bucket account. May set one up. Yesterday a lot MORE stuff came in. What is PCM ?

Yesterdays haul - I recieved a Hooker athearn tank car and a woodland scenic details - children palying, chicken coop, cats/dogs, ole timey dump truck etc....I have to ask a question. While making decisions on buying woodland scenic details I purchased from the people who showed pictures of teh completed put together kits and not the ones who showed the kit in the box not put together. Guess what I recieved ? Kits that needed to be put together and painted - I felt misled but wonder if it is caused by my being new to ebay and missed something ??? Any comments on this ????

News - Fox ( conservative rag )  MSNBC ( liberal rag )  Any history buffs here would be interested to know that just after george washington retired there were news paper organizations which popped up which were really propangda bull horns for the two parties that were starting to form at that time. In fact Jefferson was later known to write articles/opinions under a different name to his particular news groups. If you read MSNBC it is very clear that they are beholding to the "progressive" crowd money group and that Fox is the "Conservatives" group bull horn. One needs to do research and sudy the facts to get the real story.  Both are developing news to empower their millionaries pocket books. For instance did you know that George sorros ( sp? ) who has promoted "gay" marriage owns many of the jewelery chain stores in America ? Guess what he makes by promoting more and different types of marriages ? GOLD

I read that it can take up to two weeks to settle back into a regular sleeping pattern. But hey, at least now my intestines can't come out for a visit.
